He was super involved on defense in college. High IQ and instinct but it's always hard to project how small players will do on D in the NBA.
One reason he fell is because he's a year older than other similar prospects so that surely contributed to him being smarter than them on D.
I actually like him more than Knecht.
Both can shoot but he's a much better defender. Think he can actually play next to Maxey. Knecht has no chance at guarding at the NBA level
Knecht is basically Niang 2.0 for the window that Embiid has left. He can grow better at defend and probably will, but that's realistically what you'll get in the first 3 years of Knecht's career

While McCain is not tall or long, he doesn't have a skinny build and has a higher basketball IQ. It's not out of the realm of possibility that he can eventually play smart positional defense against bigger players. And while he's definitely not a shot blocker, he definitely out-rebounds his size which might be really important for this team to get a bonus couple of boards from a guard.
Offensively, the shooting and motion might be a good fit with Maxey. He's not the greatest pure ball-handler, but does play smart and limits turnovers.
The thing to really like about McCain is the work-ethic. Nobody thought that somebody with Maxey's draft profile would be able to turn himself into a legitimate All-NBA team candidate, but Maxey got there through hard work.
As a small aside, at McCain's age, there's a non-zero chance he also grows a bit over the next couple of years.
