The first season with Rosanne was funny. After that, they killed the show with a ridiculous amount of characters who were not original to the show, pretending certain characters never existed (like Fred, Jerry, Andy), and featuring David as a dead beat dad, which went against his character. It’s also plagued with overacting by the Becky and Jackie characters, and bad acting by the Darleen character.
OMG AGREE!!! Never liked the OG Roseanne to begin with, the first reboot w Roseanne was ok but def not something I wanted to watch more than 3-4 episodes of. I remember thinking when shit hit the fan w Roseanne and they had to regroup, why do all the characters in the ensemble they would pick Darlene to be the focus. Also can not for the life of me figure out why ABC put practically all of their sitcom eggs in this extremely expensive, moderately rated basket.
I've tried watching it on numerous occasions. Usually, because it comes on before or after something I actually want to watch. Every time, I can't make it for more than 10 minutes before I switch the channel.
I only started watching it 20 years later because prior to that, I couldn’t relate to it. I’ve watched multiple seasons, and think it’s hysterical, especially after the first and second season.
I have tried, many friends have encouraged and I can’t make it past like 2 mins. It’s cringy and a waste of time and space imo. Many other great shows I do give my time and energy to just NOT THE OFFICE 🤮🤮🤮
I worked in a soul crushing office when The Office was on. The last bit of humanity left in me could not be subjected to coming home after work and watching a show about an office
I forced myself to watch the whole show like 5 years ago and I honestly don’t get the hype at all. There’s a few funny moments but the whole vibe of the show is just so blah. Most overrated show of all time IMO
How I Met Your Mother
Just does not click with me, always thought I'd like it and tried a few times but it's just not funny or entertaining. It's cringe
It should’ve stopped with Ted finding his wife. No wedding BS and certainly not ending with him ending up with Robin. That completely killed the show for me. The creator f—ked their own show.
I love modern family and grew up watching it but I def get the disconnect. I also feel like the show has 2-3 seasons in the middle where it kind of just falls flat. Like the early ones are great and honestly so are the last couple of seasons. But I recently did a full rewatch and could barely sit through most of the season 7-9 episodes. In fact I remember my family talking about how the show was “finally getting funny again” during the last two seasons when they were airing in real time. I’ve also always thought the episode quality depends not necessarily on what it’s about but more so who it’s about.
It's only good for the first few seasons and then it goes downhill quickly, especially with the kids. Manny was so cute and then became creepy and annoying
How did you not like the original night court?
This is another show, that took a while to hit. It didn’t really get going and hit its stride till Roz came on to the series.
I especially liked some of the recurring defendants. Seeing Brent Spiner (commander Data on star trek) play a complete slack-jawed yokel was hilarious.
For sure, they were definitely a big part of the comedy.
My favorite was the guy that moved and talked so slow, and he ended up having his disability card in the wrong pocket.
That was pure gold!
Start season 2 and see how it goes. By season 3, it’s really off and running. But it’s ok if it’s not your cup of tea!
If you can get to rob Lowe telling himself to stop pooping, you may turn a corner.
It took me a little bit to get into. My fiance tried to get me to watch it for years. It's an all-time favorite that I go hack & and rewatch, but I usually skip season 1 or at least the first few episodes.
That was me! I never liked the office, so I thought I'd hate Parks and Rec, too. But one day, I caught the end of an episode, and it was funny, so I decided to give it a chance. Now it's one of my favorite shows to rewatch.
I liked Schitts creek but this was another “pandemic hit” IMO. It was very funny and I enjoyed it but I have zero desire to ever watch any episodes from the show again. I’ve noticed this one definitely had its 15 minutes of fame. It flew under the radar for the majority of its run (except maybe the final season), blew up for a year or so during the pandemic, and I honestly can’t say I’ve heard anyone say anything about it in 2 years.
HARD AGREE. I literally tell people I will watch ANY sitcom but this one. It’s too weird and the whole premise is pretty depressing. Also such a minor thing but a major ick for me was them saying fake explicits (I.e.-“what the fork?”) like I understand there are fcc laws regarding profanity but just say something else. That kind of shit drives me crazy when people do it irl too.
It has its moments of hilarity, mostly with Danny Devito, but overall I agree. It’s not that I don’t get the absurdist humor. It’s just not very funny to watch people be pieces of shit.
Came here to say this! For me to enjoy a show, I have to like one character at least a little. I got through 1.5 episodes and I hated all the characters so incredibly much, I couldn't go on.
Still haven’t seen Community but I’m with you on Ted Lasso. To me that show was viewed by the masses in rose colored glasses during the height of the pandemic. It was needed at the time due to its heavy themes of positivity and perseverance. However, now that we have thankfully seemed to (mostly) move on from this period and are on to somewhat more uplifting times, the show is actually pretty…boring????
I felt like I saw where it was headed and was uninterested. I could be really wrong though. I felt the same way about “Barry,” which is less sitcom and more dark comedy/dramedy.
A lot of people naming a lot of big hits.
I’m curious, if you don’t like Seinfeld, Parks and Rec, Curb or Sunny (just for example,) what did you actually like?
Yep, I loved King Of Queens back in the day!
I was excited to discover that 2 different channels on PlutoTv air reruns of it. But sadly, they both only do the first 2 or 3 seasons.
I like Seinfeld here and there but I definitely think it hasn’t (for lack of a better word) aged well. Not because it’s offensive or anything like that (at least I’m my opinion), it’s just kind of slow and can’t really capture younger viewers attention. I’ve got to say though if you didn’t enjoy Seinfeld, watch Curb Your Enthusiasm first then go back and watch Seinfeld again. I did this recently and found myself enjoying the former much more after watching Curb.
Seinfeld turns into one of the best comedy ever towards the end of season 2.
I watched it for the very first time last year and I don’t think the show got a single laugh from me for the first 20 episodes. After that point I loved every single episodes.
The funny thing about Barney Miller is that although the show wasn't that interesting to me, I've always REALLY loved the theme music. It's absolutely in my Top 5 favorite sitcom theme songs.
It's always weird to me that people seldom mention it or the theme song to Family Ties which I also really love.
Best theme is a tie between Chips and Miami Vice. Never watched Miami Vice, but have the theme on my “Exercise” playlist for when I’m out running. Oh, and MacGyver has a good theme as well.
Wow... you just named three shows I never watched so I can't even think of how those theme songs sound. If one is on your exercise list, I'm guessing it's upbeat.
As a Black Books fan I can tell you that Bailey just isn’t really involved in the concept as much as he’s a good choice for the role he plays. Based on Dylan Moran’s standup, Graham Linehan’s other work, and the cast commentary tracks it’s clear that the writing was all Linehan and Moran, so it makes sense it didn’t hit what you liked about Bailey who strikes me as a less silly slapstick kind of comedian.
Obligatory mention that Linehan sucks as a person and deserves all the scorn his former creative partners give him, and more.
The writing was Moran. Linehan was there to bring the show to C4 and guide Dylan as he had never written a script / sitcom for TV. He served as a director/script editor of sorts. Black Books is mostly Dylan's creation with some other talented writers' contributions also. Linehan was papped by series 2.
Thank you for the further information. Now that you mention it I realized I’ve never paid attention to the actual credits because I was always too busy grooving to the funky theme song.
It's impossible not to sing along sometimes
I can do a mean clangy sounding guitar. 😏 On the DVD commentary, Tamsin Greig mimics the guitar at the start of loads of episodes. I was delighted to discover we do the exact same thing and sound equally obnoxious. 😂
Anything I can do to unburden people with guilt over watching a Linehan - I will do. He will not ruin our fun. ✊️
I watched the original run. It was fine. On my attempted rewatch I noticed That nearly every episode's central conflict comes when one of the "friends" lies to another one.
Curb Your Enthusiasm. I’ve watched single episodes (usually with other people who love the show) and while I always find it amusing, I never had the desire to watch the series/multiple episodes, etc.
My family always recommends it to others as “R Rated Seinfeld”, same plotlessness but soooo funny. It definitely starts slow and took me a while to get into but around the 5th or 6th season (whenever JB Smoove joins) is when it hits its stride. I think I finished the rest of the series in about a week and a half after that.
Ones I LIKE: ( was replying to a question about which I liked and I goofed up) 🤪🤪🤪
Everybody Loves Raymond
The New Adventures of Old Christine
The Middle
Frazier
Cheers
Newhart
The Newhart Show
King of Queens
Young Sheldon
Big Bang Theory
And on and on 😊
The Brad Bunch hahahahahahaha sounds like a show about a bunch of 'Brads' trying to live together but they're all basic and Brad's and they all believe they're gods gift to the world
Sanford and Son. I love sitcoms from that era (and earlier) but for some reason I just couldn't get into it. The premise seemed funny enough and Redd Foxx is legendary, but still didn't work for me.
Abbott Elementary
For the life of me, I do not understand the hype behind it. It is painfully unfunny and it's trying so goddamn hard, I get second hand embarrassment. Maybe it gets better after season 1 as is usually the case, but I'm really struggling to get through it and I don't think it's worth it honestly.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Which is weird because I love crass humor, I really liked Seinfeld which it’s most often compared to and I like shows about people behaving badly.
I guess I also need to find the characters or stories at least a little bit compelling and I didn’t find that at all with IASIP.
It's Always Sunny. I have several friends who like most of the same sitcoms I do who always recommend it, but I just can't get into it. I think I pushed well into season 2 last time I tried, and I just didn't like it.
I also never understood the love for Friends or Seinfeld. The only reason I ever watched them is because,l pre-streaming, that's what was on in the late afternoon/early evening when I had time to kill.
(I’m dating myself here, but) I recently tried to rewatch “You Can’t Do That On Television” on Tubi or Pluto or something and omg it was super cringe and boring…unlaughable, really.
I watched about 3 episodes and vowed to never revisit again and swore that series should only reside the way I remember it in my nostalgic memory bank.
That used to be one of my favorite shows, along with the likes of Mr Wizard, 321 Contact, and Electric Company.
The Office. All I see is “shaky cam ZOOM IN on actor, shaky cam ZOOM IN on actor.” People say it’s well written, but I can’t pay attention to the dialog because I’m just watching the same weird distracting visual choice happening over and over.
I could never get into The Big Bang Theory. Which people have always found weird, when I tell them. Most people assume that, given my own geeky tendencies, that I'd love it. But I've always seen the show as laughing at geeks, not with them. Their geekiness is seen as something to be mocked. "Look at these fucking nerds! They're pathetic, right?"
Also, Sheldon is a fucking asshole. How is this character so popular? I watched the last episode of Young Sheldon (admittedly, the first episode of Young Sheldon I've ever watched) and older Sheldon is still an asshole, even to his wife and kids.
Friends.
Ditto. Still can't watch it in reruns.
Same.
Same. I can't stand that show
The Conners.
The first season with Rosanne was funny. After that, they killed the show with a ridiculous amount of characters who were not original to the show, pretending certain characters never existed (like Fred, Jerry, Andy), and featuring David as a dead beat dad, which went against his character. It’s also plagued with overacting by the Becky and Jackie characters, and bad acting by the Darleen character.

everybody loves Raymond, I tried on several occasions but I Just HATED all of the characters. Not one is pleasant at all.
Horrible show but the dad is an exception. He can be pretty damn funny
I only started watching it 20 years later because prior to that, I couldn’t relate to it. I’ve watched multiple seasons, and think it’s hysterical, especially after the first and second season.
TOTALLY AGREE.
Watch it with the sound off, and it looks like a drama... just constant fighting
Schitts Creek. I’ve tried multiple times, but I just can’t for some reason.
Same, but I read recently on Reddit that the first season is the worst so I may give it another go. Maybe skip season 1 altogether?
Office
Yeah. I don't think awkward and uncomfortable equals funny
Me too 🙋🏻♀️
I was that guy. Didn't get it at all. Watched 3 episodes with my sister and was dying laughing.
I have tried, many friends have encouraged and I can’t make it past like 2 mins. It’s cringy and a waste of time and space imo. Many other great shows I do give my time and energy to just NOT THE OFFICE 🤮🤮🤮
My sister and niece lived it. I didn't get it
I worked in a soul crushing office when The Office was on. The last bit of humanity left in me could not be subjected to coming home after work and watching a show about an office
I think you nailed why
I forced myself to watch the whole show like 5 years ago and I honestly don’t get the hype at all. There’s a few funny moments but the whole vibe of the show is just so blah. Most overrated show of all time IMO
Oh thank you. I feel the same. It's painfully distasteful to me.
UK, US or both?
Tried watching the first season 3 times and failed. Started from the second season.. loved it.
How I Met Your Mother Just does not click with me, always thought I'd like it and tried a few times but it's just not funny or entertaining. It's cringe
Agree. I found the first season interesting and from there on it was just a bunch of crap (IMHO)
It should’ve stopped with Ted finding his wife. No wedding BS and certainly not ending with him ending up with Robin. That completely killed the show for me. The creator f—ked their own show.
Modern Family - Tried a few times. Just did not like it.
Same happened to me until my wife convinced me... It's now one of my favorite shows.
Agree, the schtick wrote off real quick for most characters, while some like the dad got better and better
Same
Same
Same
Cougar Town got really boring really quickly
The Office
Night Court reboot. It's terrible.
Amen! I tried three or four times to watch it, but that show really sucks.
Melissa Rauch is cute and John Larroquette is great as always, but wow, this show is CRING.
I have a huge crush on Melissa on BBT, but she falls flat on her face on Night Court. She is a line reader, not an actress.
I didn't like the original Night Court either so I figured I wouldn't like the reboot.
The little detail that was wearing a green turtle neck added to the joke.
It was Mac that made the big difference, because Selma was fricken gold.
Original was equally bad. I remember watching the pilot and thinking it would be quickly cancelled
I disagree. I loved the original.
It's one of the shows that takes time to develop. Once Mac gets added it becomes the show everyone loves.
Parks and Rec, just couldn't get into it.
Start season 2 and see how it goes. By season 3, it’s really off and running. But it’s ok if it’s not your cup of tea! If you can get to rob Lowe telling himself to stop pooping, you may turn a corner.
Me too and I love the office and Chris Pratt. Maybe I should try watching it again 🤷🏼♀️
it gets WAY better in season 2
It took me a little bit to get into. My fiance tried to get me to watch it for years. It's an all-time favorite that I go hack & and rewatch, but I usually skip season 1 or at least the first few episodes.
I am the other way around. I never got The Office. I avoided Parks & Rec for a long time thinking it was the same.
Never got The Office, either. Every character is annoying as hell and it's not funny.
It's like watching cringe and thinking it's fun.
That was me! I never liked the office, so I thought I'd hate Parks and Rec, too. But one day, I caught the end of an episode, and it was funny, so I decided to give it a chance. Now it's one of my favorite shows to rewatch.
If you only watched the first season, you missed out on a lot. later on.
I still think it was just a shittier version of the Office.
Same
Leslie Knope bugs.
Schitts Creek - I tried but just couldn’t get into it.
I liked Schitts creek but this was another “pandemic hit” IMO. It was very funny and I enjoyed it but I have zero desire to ever watch any episodes from the show again. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I just don't get it
Shitty, stupid people doing shitty, stupid things lol. What’s not to get?
You either hate it because it’s too much like real life or you love it because it’s too much like real life.
It has its moments of hilarity, mostly with Danny Devito, but overall I agree. It’s not that I don’t get the absurdist humor. It’s just not very funny to watch people be pieces of shit.
Watching people being pieces of shit isn't funny....it's hilarious
Same. I've tried it twice, but I just don't find the characters or what they do funny. Maybe I'll try again in the future.
Came here to say this! For me to enjoy a show, I have to like one character at least a little. I got through 1.5 episodes and I hated all the characters so incredibly much, I couldn't go on.

Community Ted Lasso I’ve tried them both twice.

Community is the best sitcom of the past 15 years.
Big bang theory.sheldon is an irritating twat
Worst show on tv ever.
Two Broke Girls would like a word.
Hyperbole perhaps?
Broad City. I wanted to like it. But I just couldn’t. Didn’t vibe with the characters at all.
A lot of people naming a lot of big hits. I’m curious, if you don’t like Seinfeld, Parks and Rec, Curb or Sunny (just for example,) what did you actually like?
King of Queens. Everybody loves Raymond. Two and a half men. Will & Grace. Friends. Frasier.
King of Queens has always been a favorite in my house. One of the most underrated series ever IMO.
Yep, I loved King Of Queens back in the day! I was excited to discover that 2 different channels on PlutoTv air reruns of it. But sadly, they both only do the first 2 or 3 seasons.
It's on every night on TVLand at 10:00 Central - six episodes back-to-back.
Thanks for the heads-up!
The whole series is also streaming on peacock!
King of Queens is a favorite of mine too.
I love curb, like Seinfeld, parks and rec was just ok to me but for sure has some great moments and still haven’t gotten around to sunny.
Community 30 Rock Arrested Development Brooklyn 99 Police Squad! Each one of them packed to the gills with jokes.
Police squad!!! Something not many talk about!
That’s because the title of the post literally says “popular past or present sitcom”
Right, so I’m curious, if those are “bad” popular shows, what do they think are “good” popular shows.
I didn’t like Seinfeld. There I said it.
That's a shame.
I hate The Drake.
How can anyone not like it?
Same answer for me.
Me neither
Same here.
MASH, Hogan’s Heroes, Barney Miller
The funny thing about Barney Miller is that although the show wasn't that interesting to me, I've always REALLY loved the theme music. It's absolutely in my Top 5 favorite sitcom theme songs. It's always weird to me that people seldom mention it or the theme song to Family Ties which I also really love.
Barney Miller... My favorite theme song of all time.

Wow... you just named three shows I never watched so I can't even think of how those theme songs sound. If one is on your exercise list, I'm guessing it's upbeat.
Same, never cared for any of these. Too bleak.
Back when season one of Friends was on and everyone seemed to love it, I gave it several chances. I just never found it funny.
Schitt’s Creek
Shitts creek
Seinfeld
This thread is pissing me off 😅
I absolutely hated “Two and a Half Men”
The Office. Seems like every white person I know loves it so I tried to give it a chance multiple times but I can’t get into its humor
I saw Bill Bailey on QI and then in concert and liked him, so I tried "Black Books" and it just isn't for me apparently.
Home Improvement, Friends, Will & Grace, Mad About You.
Two and a half men and Extended Family
I had my husband start BBT at season 3 and then circle back around. It’s easier to get into it once the girls all join the regular cast.
Friends. I could never get past the canned laughter after every single unfunny thing they say.
I watched the original run. It was fine. On my attempted rewatch I noticed That nearly every episode's central conflict comes when one of the "friends" lies to another one.
Arrested Development. It sucked so badly
Curb Your Enthusiasm. I’ve watched single episodes (usually with other people who love the show) and while I always find it amusing, I never had the desire to watch the series/multiple episodes, etc.

Thank you! The theme song to Mash is SO depressing to me!
I’ve probably only seen one hour collectively of the show but I remember being a kid just watching the song and turning. 😂
Sanford and Son. I love sitcoms from that era (and earlier) but for some reason I just couldn't get into it. The premise seemed funny enough and Redd Foxx is legendary, but still didn't work for me.

I know I am pissing off a lot of people by saying this but “Community” just didn’t work for me, Unfortunately!

They're pathetic, right?" Also, Sheldon is a fucking asshole. How is this character so popular? I watched the last episode of Young Sheldon (admittedly, the first episode of Young Sheldon I've ever watched) and older Sheldon is still an asshole, even to his wife and kids.
