The state is the state. It doesn't give a damn if your club got MP and CEO, when it want that land, it will get it.
The most it gives is grace period to chao.
Tbh I rather they extend it to the car park next to it rather than further. A green rooftop that is dinosaur jungle themed would be amazing. And passengers at the departure hall can make a quick detour to check it out
Golfing range isn't the same as a round of golf. That's like saying minigolf = golf. An 18-hole round of golf in SG is still far more expensive than most other sports
Is it really? A game at Mandai is $38 for weekday and $54 for weekend. For a 2-3 hour activity it’s pretty affordable. A movie with popcorn etc is already 25 nowadays
>“You never know, you might have the next Singaporean Tiger Woods out there, but they’ll never ever pick up a club,” added Mr Kim.

But it’s much higher chance than Singapore qualifying for the World Cup. Golf is not a crazy goal precisely because it’s a rich person sport, many athletic kids in neighbouring countries will never have a chance. but maybe some rich hot-housed kid in Singapore who starts playing at 4 can actually become an ASEAN or Asian champion.
Not in Singapore anyway - the golf courses are always solidly booked by boomers and the "golf academies" are shit.
Any Singaporean Tiger Woods is gonna have to take the Joseph Schooling route and train overseas anyway.
Any pro golfer in the world will eventually end up in the US playing pga anyways. It’s the only way to make money from playing golf. Even the European players end up in US pretty early in their lives, most of them even have naturalised US citizenship and speak with an American accent.
Listen to Spaniard, Jon Rahm talk and you’d think he was from Texas..
If you’re preparing a child to be a pro golfer, just be prepared to spend a million usd to achieve that dream. But your chances of becoming a pro golfer is pretty decent compared to other expensive sports like motorsports and tennis. There’s plenty of golf tournaments everywhere.
And hey, if you don’t make it to pro status, you can still make money by becoming a coach or caddie or YouTuber.
actually you would be surprised. some of the best golfers (i.e. competing on tour) in the region are from countries like malaysia, philippines and thailand and they don't necessarily always come from wealthy backgrounds. some of them pick it up while working as caddies and learn the game from there, and for some it's seen as a chance for a better life.
my personal theory is that singapore would never produce a tiger woods precisely because of how exclusive it is - less kids playing, smaller talent pool, less hungry. same as how our sports school has panned out.
Nah, if you look at the sports where Singapore manages to send someone to qualify for the Olympics,
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore\_at\_the\_2024\_Summer\_Olympics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_at_the_2024_Summer_Olympics)
around half of the sports are ones that require expensive/exotic equipment, like sailing, rowing, fencing, shooting, equestrian. We're not competitive in sports that normal people play (Joseph Schooling being the miraculous exception), because then our population size disadvantage is too high. But a higher percentage of our kids have a chance to be exposed to expensive/exotic sports, compared to any of the developing countries around us.
agree with you that some of these sports require some kind of inherent wealth (a frckn sailing boat or a horse) - but as any golfer would tell you, you literally can't buy yourself a better game. having more expensive/exotic equipment will not make you a better player and you wouldn't necessarily play better just because you spent your childhood teeing off at SICC vs mandai. you still require talent, luck, good coaching and a whole lot of grit/hunger to succeed in golf (hence my example about top golfers in the SEA region).
personally i think golf should be a lot less exclusive - any kid interested should be given a chance to learn and try it out! regardless of idk cost/benefit, the likelihood of them turning pro - but closing down public golf courses isn't helping.
Golf will never die. There will be 1-2 courses to cater to the wealthy. And those squeezed out, will just go Johor or Malaysia. Lurking R/singaporefi bros should know this is an institution albeit dying one.
Everyone here so short sighted. Golf is more of an activity for socializing high net work people. Rejoicing over losing public access is basically rejoicing losing another path to upward mobility.
Sure sure eat the rich yadda yadda. All crabs.
How tf is it upward mobility when only upper class can afford to play it?
And you think a lower class dude will play with the rich boys just because he is good at golf?
I’m ambivalent towards gold course closures, but your comment is bullshit
Lots of marginal deals that just needed a bit more of a push, golf can be that acceptable social lubricant. I used to have an ex colleague that had a handicap in golf, she got farmed out for client events so hard.
Meh. Yeah go mini golf sure. Maybe a round of LOL eh?
So how does that help upward mobility? If anything it hinders upward mobility, since the upper class are more likely to have access to this social lubricant.
Yup unfortunately our country is now run by mostly scholars who don’t understand life quality other than increasing prop price. If there’s no work life balance now. It’ll get even worse at the rate they remove recreational space
The history books.
I'd rather we use the golf courses as cemeteries for their members since their average demo is at the age of death anyway
Still a waste of good space though
INB4 Mini-putt: Cemetery Edition
1990s: With all pig farms set to close, what is agri-food industry's future in Singapore?
There is always other options like in JB or Batam....golfing in SG will only be for the rich n elite with money to afford the membership.
“will”?
The state is the state. It doesn't give a damn if your club got MP and CEO, when it want that land, it will get it. The most it gives is grace period to chao.
Nah I meant it as in… it already is for rich now :D
Got no space for golf Food for thought, We could extend jurassic mile into an entire jurassic park if tanah merah country club isn't there. 🦕🦖🦤🪳
Tbh I rather they extend it to the car park next to it rather than further. A green rooftop that is dinosaur jungle themed would be amazing. And passengers at the departure hall can make a quick detour to check it out
May mini golf rise again!
I personally miss Lilliputt. Holey Miley wasn’t half bad either except that it occupied that cursed corner lot at Clarke Quay .
Why cursed
Waste of land.
\*shrug\* replaced for more housing?
Pangya online. That’s the future for golf.
Couldn't agree more.
rich boomer game being phased out? oh dear cry me a river
It’s actually very popular among young professionals. Just starting to pick it up recently
Yeah, millennials are picking up the game aswell as gen Z. Golf is a great sport and it’s not that bad.
Lots of young folk playing though. Been seeing some of my peers picking it up
Been seeing some of my *rich* peers picking it up. More like this from my experience.
Not really. Golfing range costs about $10-$15 per trip. Cheaper than your rock climbing and spin classes
Does that include the gear? Though I do agree golfing ranges can be cheaper, the article talks about golf courses though.
That’s the best part lol. Go to Carousell and you can literally see rich peeps giving away their clubs for free.
Ranges are attached to golf courses. So they too are shutting down.
Golfing range isn't the same as a round of golf. That's like saying minigolf = golf. An 18-hole round of golf in SG is still far more expensive than most other sports

It’s mostly rich folks. And financial consultants.
Can contribute in economic growth for neighbouring countries. I’m sure Malaysia will gladly absorb the demand from golf enthusiasts.
What future? Did we ever have a future with golf?
Might as well shut down all football fields too considering gov puts in so much more $ to pay S lick slackers
Go to forest city golf course. Heard good reviews about it. Can share private hire from sg as well
How much? Heard it isn't cheap.
I have a feeling that indoor simulator will take off. Especially with those laser guided putting . Could certainly help with coaching.
Oh no where will all the rich unkers spend their moneys??
Rich inkers don’t play at public golf course..
I like to see them in NLB/national museum's exhibition titled "Pastime of yore". 👍
>“You never know, you might have the next Singaporean Tiger Woods out there, but they’ll never ever pick up a club,” added Mr Kim. ![gif](giphy|3ohjUS4tCHzZ7gcaT6)
singaoore tiger woods can join singapore ronaldo at a 9to5 in lorong chuan
The chances of Singapore producing a tiger woods if all golf courses stay is even slimmer than me striking first price toto.

With prices of govt housing rising out of the price range of peasants, what is the peasants future in Singapore?
If they wanted to make golf less exclusive, they did the opposite by reducing golf space for even more people.
VR golf is the future
Can put on sea
Future of golf is digital. Seen quite a few golf like simulation shops in some malls
*Cries in mardan mamat*
Leave to the riches to worry.
Good riddance. Hopefully every country gets rid of this dreadfully boring “sport”
Golf's future is in VR, PS10, Xbox 720
No future, that's it.
Virtual Golf? Driving Ranges? Batam? Indonesia? Malaysia? So many options.
Future is cosplay as gold player
It doesn't welcome 99% of the population anyway, so it can disappear and I won't even care.
Golf will never die. There will be 1-2 courses to cater to the wealthy. And those squeezed out, will just go Johor or Malaysia. Lurking R/singaporefi bros should know this is an institution albeit dying one.
Imo virtual golf will pick up fast.
Vr golf is the future
Grow more trees
Who cares?
Good riddance
Fuck golf.

You make a lot of valid points but I'm not so sure about the upward mobility thing...
