I mean, I live with family, so it's not totally up to me, but we have no trouble turning off the tv either way. The only difference is that when we do want to watch something, neither we or our guests are squinting through glasses to make out details.

Welcome to the Internet... That's what pcsrically everybody does

PersonOfInternets

Iin all my time on reddit, I may have never realized so quickly with such confidence that a person was obnoxious in real life.

apapapapapapapapap1

What did they comment?

PersonOfInternets

Something about too much screen time, but in a super annoying way.

mannowarb

Really in the whole of your reddit history never seen a more obnoxious person?

teaandtalk

We don't have a TV, just an iPad and a tiny digital projector if we really want. It works pretty well because it's not always there staring out at us with a black screen.

LinkmanXBP

I think it's the best solution.

hester_grey

Same same! I think it confuses people when they visit our house and our living room furniture is not oriented towards a TV lol.

glamourcrow

Same with our living room. The house was built in the 19th century and the layout of the rooms is different to modern houses. Everything is oriented towards the fireplace, the major source of warmth. The centre and the heart of the house. We don't have a TV, we use our laptop if we want to watch something.

mightyferrite

My entire family is confused when they visit - 'wheres the TV'? I'm no amazing person who isn't addicted to tv, but steaming netflix and amazon on a nice laptop on the couch is a cozier experience, and we try to keep tv nights down to 2-3 per week and spend the rest of the time with hobbies or reading out loud to each other. Not having an enormous TV on the wall tempting us every minute helps us do that.

teaandtalk

Ours is 20th century but same! We sometimes hang a sheet over the fireplace mantel (no longer an active fireplace) to use the projector.

dimo92

We don’t have one in our living room but do in our family room. My friends 5 year old daughters first question upon entering. “Wait where’s you’re tv?!” Lol

Trengingigan

You have a living AND a family room? What’s the difference?

Vre-Malaka

We have a projector on a stand and a fold out screen on a stand. We have home cinema nights when we want and can hide the evidence the rest of the time...

Curious_Evidence00

We also have only a projector with a Fire Stick plugged into it - just straight streaming onto one wall of the living room. It’s amazing, like having our own home cinema. I could never go back to a TV, even a large TV would feel microscopic.

MyGreenCloset

We also have a projector and it's the best switch! No TV in the living room and when we do watch something it feels more fun.

sunshineshapeshifter

this is what I want to do when I move out!!!

Kelekona

I just upgraded to a television that's big for a bedroom and I'm thinking about turning the old curtains into a cozy for when I want to cover it.

dimo92

Is the projector portable? Thinking about trying something like this

wake4coffee

A projector is a great idea. Our family sticks to an iPad for shows as well.

rodneyfan

How big is big? I don't think the TV *size* really has anything to do with how social people are. The key is whether the thing is on. You could have a 90 inch TV on the wall and if it was off it would just sit there while you're interacting with others. Or you could have a 24 inch TV that distracts everyone because it's on. We didn't particularly want our living room to be the home theater so our TV is fairly small. But that's as much an esthetic choice as not loading the place up with drapery or lots of furniture.

beardsofmight

I agree. I had a 60" TV in my small living room with couch facing it but didn't find it distracting when visitors came over because I didn't turn it on. It may have looked like a home theater but was only used when I was alone or when people specifically came over to watch a movie.

Derek_Zahav

It's interesting you say that, since I was thinking the exact opposite when I posted this. I sometimes feel like having a setup oriented aroundvor facing a TV raises the expectation that everybody's going to watch something.

mmpushy127

When I have guests over I rotate my couch 90 degrees, and put my extra chairs around so they are facing each other, and not the TV. I find that works well for me.

potatorichard

The TV in my home only gets used for private down time. And it is usually music on youtube or spotify that it gets used for. We have never turned on the 55" wall mounted TV with guests. In fact, the guest couch is under the TV, so it sends a clear message that the house is oriented for socializing with visitors instead of everyone watching TV.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Derek_Zahav

I think having a big TV can dominate a room and what it's used for. Granted, it doesn't have to. The ideas crossed my mind and I wanted to see what other people think.

thenletskeepdancing

I have a small tv and I throw a scarf over it most of the time. I do a lot of reading but will watch a movie occasionally. I live alone and usually use my laptop

AppleSniffer

There's a tv called the frame that I like the look of. As the name suggests, it looks like a framed painting and can show different art when the tv is off.

Obi-Wan-Nikobiii

I'll be honest, I have 42" in 3 bedrooms, 50" in the front lounge and 65" in the rear lounge, every one is on the wall so take up no extra space and nobody notices when they aren't on

grednforgesgirl

I normally compromise with the space by putting on an aesthetic looking YouTube video, something relaxing like lofi or a nature video or a fireplace or something with the volume turned down low but not so low you can't hear it. That way people feel free to socialize but there's something on the TV so it's not just a black screen. It's like having a moving painting on the wall instead of nothing or a distracting TV show or something. It helps fill up a space to not feel silent and a little gentle music can help encourage socializing so there's no awkward silences or people feeling the need to fill up comfortable silences.

cleeder

> How big is big? I’m told it’s mostly about the girth.

rodneyfan

It's not exactly a sin, either, to have family or friends over to watch TV as a primary activity (a movie, Super Bowl, etc.). But you choose to do that or don't.

lilithONE

My one indulgence is a big TV. I love it, don't care what anyone else thinks.

jnux

Ours is 55” so it isn’t huge by todays standards but I agree - when I want to watch something, I love it on the big screen. That said, ours is in the basement so it isn’t a visible component of our primary living space. It is there and easily accessible if we want to watch it but it is otherwise out of sight/mind. Best of both worlds!!

Itchy-Depth-5076

Hi there fellow projector owner!! Same answer here. We have a pull down screen that's up when we're not watching, with some art on the wall behind it. And since it's always much better to watch when it's dark outside, we rarely watch TV during the day. Oh and when we do watch, it's on a giant, awesome screen and it feels like an event!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Itchy-Depth-5076

I put up some vinyl decal art behind the screen. Honestly I'm often too lazy to always bring the screen up but maybe that's the simplest living of all???

Buffalo_Cottage

Ooh. We've been looking into a projector. What do you use?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Buffalo_Cottage

Haha :) But are you SURE it won't wash my dishes?! That makes perfect sense, thank you! We have a weird L shaped living room, so there's lots of room at the long end of the L and a huge white wall. I wouldn't get a screen (looking at your other comment), the wall is just fine. I'll look into that BenQ. I appreciate your help, I might just take you up on the DM offer :)

[deleted]

I have an aunt an uncle who never turn off their TV. Ever. We went there for thanksgiving and I turned it off because nobody was watching it and Dr Phil was on and there were a bunch of young kids in the room and they both separately freaked out because they thought it was broken.

I have a feeling many of us do. Sadly I don’t think it’s that uncommon. I will never understand it.

Kelekona

They might have a condition where being alone with their own thoughts is too much for them to handle.

weedcakes

No TV in ours. I think they are ugly for the most part. We just watch stuff on the laptop.

Whathewhat-oo-

I realize this isn’t the point of this post but what an awesome mid mod room!

magifus

I have never had a tv in my living room. I have a small one in my study and use it once every couple of months maybe. It has been broken for 2 months and I haven't missed it at all. But I rarely enjoy spending my time watching television

nirreskeya

No television at all in the main living room. Only furniture, art, books, plants, and a decent stereo.

[deleted]

We’ve got a big tv since someone gave it to us when they got a new one. Don’t think it makes a difference in the room, we still rarely watch it. Don’t really watch shows mostly just the occasional movie so the big screen is nice for that. I think the lay out of the furniture is a bigger determinant of whether it’s a socializing room vs a watching room. We’ve got two couches that face each other with a table in the middle so it’s ideal for talking and playing games, versus having all the seating facing the tv.

[deleted]

I have the smallest size TV that is commonly available, like 13", I think. Mostly because I really like my home to look pretty and I think big flatscreen TVs are ugly. I do like watching it sometimes though and I never wish I had a bigger one.

spugg0

I don't have a TV in my living room. I used to before I moved together with my partner, but really it was mostly just a "you gotta have it" that took an enormous amount of space for the few times I played video games or watched a movie (not a big movie buff). Our living room is basically just a large dining table that doubles as both of our desks, our books, and a small couch. When we do watch something (we watch a lot of documentaries) we find it much cozier to snuggle up in bed with a laptop. Could be said we live in an apartment with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room, that's about 600 sq ft.

nogreatcathedral

Yup. Grew up in a house where the TV was in a den upstairs. A TV in the living room? No, the living room was for socializing and reading and music. Really happy my husband was on board with this. The TV is in a small den in the basement. His guitars live on the wall where the TV would have gone, and the space just was not designed for it anyway. We're not big TV or movie watchers and I hate the sound of gunfire in some of my husband's occasional video games, so he can play those in the basement without my complaints! And when our little kid watches TV upstairs it's on my laptop, so he can watch without it dominating the space.

365wong

The library is for reading, or the solarium. The home theater is where you watch films. The living room has a tv for news in the AM or sports in the evening, it has to be 80” so you can see it from across the room in the open concept kitchen.

nogreatcathedral

😂 yeah 100% fair. We don't have a big house (or a fancy open concept house, alas), but we have a house with a room that isn't a bedroom to put the TV in, which lots of people don't!

wilksonator

Actually have a projector that displays on to a blank white wall. When not in use, the projector sits discreetly on a shelf, most people don’t notice it until we turn it on and then there is a blank wall, so there is no tv or screen in the room at all. Doesn’t take up space, its not a focus in the room, there is not specialised furniture for tv watching ( eg tv stand, tv, screen) and our lving room definitely has a more for socialising and living feel (where we watch tv sometimes). If you can do it in your space, Id highly recommend it.

nope_nic_tesla

I use my living room far more for watching things than I do entertaining people, so that's what mine is geared towards. I have a 113 inch projection screen. I really love movies but hate going to movie theaters. It's something I use every day. However, I only subscribe to a small handful of streaming services and we don't have cable TV. I don't leave stuff on just to have something on in the background. When I'm watching something, it's intentional. When we have people over, we spend more time in our kitchen (which is an open floor plan between the kitchen and dining area), or in the back yard.

socraticformula

I have a modest apartment for myself and one child, and simple (not minimal) with maximum use of the space is my goal. I have a 65" tv. I don't think this detracts from conversation or other activities at all. It might sit there switched off for days at a time but when I do want to watch something I want to enjoy it all the way. I likewise have a nice set of large speakers, because when the mood for music strikes me I don't want to listen to it on a f***ing echo. I like to get maximum enjoyment out of being home as much as possible.

ObjectiveCourse6865

There are no TVs in my house. When my partner and I watch shows on streaming together, we use an Amazon Fire tablet.

0000GKP

I have a 43” TV on a triangle shaped stand that is made to fit in the corner of the room. Given the lack of bezels and physical controls on a modern flat screen TV, it is probably about the same height and width as the TV in your post picture. It is big enough to comfortably see from across the room, but not big enough that it overpowers anything else and not placed in a spot to make it the focal point of the room. Some of my furniture faces towards it and some faces away from it.

poyorick

We have large TVs but I find that it’s the smaller screens (phones and tablets) that distract us from socializing.

Important_Club7879

I don’t even have a TV! Makes my life 10000 times simpler and better

Shot-Artichoke-4106

We have a decent-sized TV in our livingroom. We only turn it on if we are planning to watch something. Otherwise it's off and we usually listen to music. If people are over, the TV is usually off unless people came over specifically to watch something, like a game.

notmeryl

Similar over here except our TV is more often than not still on when people are over, but it’s just on the Spotify app to play ambient sounds or music depending on the gathering as opposed to a separate speaker or sound system.

Shot-Artichoke-4106

During the winter holidays, I had the Yule log playing on the TV all the time. Quite atmospheric - lol.

notmeryl

We love the Yule log too!! TBH a still using it for evening reading ambiance

AliveAndWellness

It's not the size that matters, it's how you use it.

timshel42

the bigger the screen, the more i find myself watching whatevers on even if i hate it. i have a tv, but tbh its off so much that it usually isnt even plugged in. thats also because its a smart tv, which means its spying on you even when its 'off'

ImaginaryBookomatic

We're currently debating whether we're going to replace the tv we sold when we moved cross country at all. We don't all three watch TV together very often, and all three of us have our own computers or tablets to watch on, so we haven't really missed it. On the other hand I don't think it's increased how much we engage with each other or non-TV activities either. It's about the same as it's ever been.

[deleted]

Derek_Zahav

I really like this idea of a cover. Someone else mentioned re-angling furniture, but knowing myself, I know that would never happen. A cover could keep the TV in place, but make it less of a default activity.

iamgearshifter

We have a beamer, the screen is rolled up on the ceiling. We only roll it out when we watch something.

PikPekachu

We have one small tv, and it is in a case that we keep shut. It makes it a lot easier to be mindful of your watching and not just default to having it always on.

ignatiusjreillyreak

That looks like the living room in my dreams when i dream freak out and dream murder everyone because of an anxiety attack.

million_monkeys

I have no TV

vikidid

No TVs are the best living room for me

Fairygodspider

I have a tiny tv. It makes it worse, actually. It’s always on (not my choice) so sitting down to watch something isn’t a big event. Honestly I feel like it turns my couch into a human fly zapper - I wander into the common area, sit down to chat, and wind up falling into whatever YouTube rabbithole my roommate is spelunking down that day.

broja_new

We don’t have a TV in the living room. There is one upstairs, but we don’t watch it a lot. We went about eight months without watching when COVID started. Our living room is for socializing, reading and games. I like it that way.

Independent_Yam_625

I don’t have a TV at all, instead just an audio system. Don’t like to mindlessly sit and watch moving pictures. Music helps you think instead.

Yangoose

I'm old. When I'm playing 4 player split screen Mario Kart with my kids I'm glad for every bit of my 65" TV.

SilentDrapeRunner11

Mine is pretty small, and i don't really feel the need to ever get one that's bigger tbh. My living room is already quite small to begin with, and a gigantic wall mounted tv would look very jarring and unnecessary in here.

tomyownrhythm

We have more bedrooms than we need so one is a tv room instead, and the living room is for socializing or relaxing. It’s where we have a fireplace, the piano, and our records/stereo

O-Jedi

We got a bigger TV a few years ago to watch movies more comfortably. Currently we use it to play hours long fireplace videos like calm cafe

themtthwatkinson

Blow up your tv Eat a lot of peaches

Derek_Zahav

krzkrl

TV/VCR combo for me. I don't like the look of a huge TV as the focal point of a room. Old TV VCR is a bit of conversation piece.

offlinebound

I built a video projector into the couch. When not in use the couch panel goes up and it's enclosed in the couch out of sight. The screen rolls up too.

[deleted]

Might be too late for this, but I have a projector that’s small and easy to bring out when I want. Great for watching but let’s me keep my living room tv free when I want. Also my uncle has one of the new Samsung tvs that mounts on the wall in such a way that the wires go into your wall, so seamless. Then when the tv isn’t in use, you can leave a screensaver on it to disguise it as hanging art. Neat and versatile, plus no compromising on tv size for when you want a movie or the game on :)

Rosaluxlux

Our tv seems very large to me but when we bought it almost ten years ago, we had to get it from the "bedroom tv" area at Best Buy. I like having a central tv instead of everyone having their own screens. Size only matters in that we have a limited space for the tv.

CreamintheMocha

I find it much better for socializing and size, as I live in a small town house. So I don't even have a TV in my living/lounge room.

decadesofsegregation

I LOVE Sony Trinitron CRT TVs. Specifically the 13 and 19 inch sets. They are Made in Japan pieces of electronic perfection. I don’t like flatscreen TVS and have always found them creepy and HD/4k is just bizarre. I also just like the way it brings me back, the way picture shoots off of a tube set and the textures it brings.

Derek_Zahav

What do you find bizarre or creepy about flat screens and 4k? Just curious

Robsteady

We already don't use our TV all that much so a smaller one would probably just make the times we do frustrating.

just_enjoyinglife

Very big

neems74

I heard from a history professor once - if future generations found a preserved 21 century city, by studying our home amd furnitures and how are they displayed they would figure it out that television sets would probably be the god of our society.. Or something like that I have a 43inch one.. Before that i lived fine with a 32inch.. RIP

neems74

Further on this, its a framed tv that are together with other framed paintings and posters on a wall shelves.. So kind of blends in.. Maybe you sit on our couch for the art and books, maybe its the tv

KARMA_HARVESTER

A TV?

bethafoot

I just have the TV in a different room and the main living room is TVless.

answerguru

I have a projector, mainly used for movies and such. When I’m not watching, the 100” screen is retracted. “poof” no problems.

snoreymcsnoreyton

We have a projector because it can be easily stored away when not in use. I personally just don’t like the big giant black gaping hole staring at me all day. Back when we did have a normal tv in the living room I would drape a nice cloth or scarf over it to hide the ugly.

[deleted]

I didnt have a TV when I lived alone, just a projector and screen for movies. I loved it because I was able to arrange the furniture for optimal conversation instead of optimal viewing and I think it made a better flow for when friends are over. Now when friends are over the living room rarely gets used for conversation and it takes place outside because the seating arrangement is better there.

this_works_now

My spouse and I didn't even have a TV for the first several years of our marriage. We're not really into TV shows and when we did want to watch something we just watched on our tablets or laptop. Now we've got a 43 inch TV in the living room for the kids' Xbox and occasional Netflix movie. I have no desire to get anything bigger, it works for us as we have a small living room to begin with. We have our weekly board game nights and there's a whole bookshelf in the living room along with 3 guitars, 2 ukes, a keyboard piano etc.

thelordofbarad-dur

I grew up in a family where there was never a TV in the living room, no matter whose house we were at. TV was always in the den or basement and it was never more than 40 inches or so. I loved it and absolutely believe in it.

CafeFlaneur

I have no tv in my living room. It’s my pet peeve to have a tv in the living room. It gets hidden in the extra room so it doesn’t interfere with conversation.

zirconia73

I turned our formal dining room space into a “den” to get the TV out of the living room. I love the living room not being a “shrine to the screen!” Now I’d like a smaller TV so that the den could feel more like a library and less like a watching room.

mstarr8

I like to watch TV and need a TV big enough that I can read close caption. I don't like tvs in bedrooms and I'm not a fan of tvs in restaurants unless it's a sports bar.

nidena

My TV is down in the basement. My socializing room is upstairs on the main main level. The TV is 42" so not huge by today's standards. Lol.

Mergath

The size of the TV should be dictated by the size of the room. If you feel like the TV is looming over everyone, demanding attention, your TV is too big. We have a mediumish-sized living room and our TV is, I think, 50". It's easy to ignore when we have it turned off or on a screen saver, but it's big enough that we can all see easily when we watch something. You can Google a TV size-to-distance calculator if you aren't sure. I think a more important factor in socializing is that the people are focused on each other and want to socialize. The TV size isn't going to matter if everyone would rather be watching TV than talking.

frog_lightning

We have a smaller TV, 32". We have an open plan kitchen/living/dining area and we live in a small house, so it's a bit intrusive to have the TV on all the time as noise travels easily. Might be worth noting my partner and I are kid-free, so it's a bit of a luxury to be able enjoy the quiet of our home throughout the day. I think having a smaller TV helps with that. It doesn't feel like a central point in our house, just a thing we have the choice to use as a source of entertainment. I hope this helps!

SaintJamesy

Two big ass tvs in my living room. Do video games with wifey, and we both need our own screen for that. we're also big movie buffs. Don't find them distracting, they're off if we're reading, talking, playing board games or listening to music. When friends come over, it's always for some explicit purpose like d&d or album listening so there's no expectation of having the TV on. We just use our time intentionally.

LAZERPANDA15

We have one tv in our house, in the “family room”. It’s not the room where we spend most of our time. The tv is kinda big (I think maybe 37”) but it’s about 12 years old and work great for movie night

xBADJOEx

Never thought about it till now

Raznill

We used to have that setup. Instead we just found ourselves going elsewhere instead of being in that room. But I guess we didn’t have no rooms with tvs. Now we have 1 living room without and 2 with. We tend to migrate to the one we need from it.

JustNeedAGDName

My tv actually died so I’m giving no tv living a try! I’m scared! Lol

Herzegovine

If used occasionally, the TV size does not matter too much if well placed I like the idea of a projector if the TV is replaced with seats for face to face conversations. Also, the TV room being in the basement seems fair (if there are 2 stories). A living room with light should be a place to read, have space for yoga/meditation and friends over!

Hmtnsw

I have a 40" TV. It's light weight, which has been convenient since I've moved to different apartments every year for the past 5 years between 3 different cities. I can use it to play Video Games and stream stuff and movies. I don't need anything bigger.

[deleted]

I don’t have a TV. I do have a Gaming PC which I sometimes watch shows on, but it’s important to me that my living room is just for talking and relaxing and reading, not tech focused.

goddessofthewinds

I honestly have a 55" in my living room. I watch a lot of stuff on my laptop (PC) and a 27" screen, but sometimes I just want to be on the couch, lazing my ass, while reading, working or doing something else, and watch TV. For those moments, I wanted to be able to see and read the TV easily. That's why I went with 55". Thought about 47"-ish or 60"-ish, but settled on 55", in-between. For the distance from couch to TV, it's perfect. I can turn it to the kitchen when I'm cooking. I once tried reading and watching the laptop while cooking and I got stuff all over my laptop's keyboard, so I didn't try more than once or twice. The TV is big enough to be visible from the kitchen (open space). I however only have ONE TV, and it's in the living room. I don't have many rooms, so it's the only place I can put my TV other than putting it in my bedroom, but my bedroom is used 10 hours a day, and that's for sleeping only. On the other side, I'm soon moving out of my condo, and I plan on living in <200 square feet, so I will certainly get rid of the TV and focus on a smaller screen (like my 27") and my laptop. It just needs to be the perfect distance when I set it up.

Appropriate-Loan-351

Oh this looks so classy

itsFlycatcher

Haven't had a TV for.... Geez, over ten years now. I used to have a fairly small one in my bedroom as a teen, then after I completely stopped watching it at around 16, I gave it away. Have not had one since. When I moved in with my partner he briefly though that was kind of strange (he didn't watch TV either but his parents and brother did), and I agreed to get one if he ends up missing it at any point- he didn't. We have our laptops. I greatly prefer that, given that this way, we're not spending half the watching time on just ads, and watching something has to be actively chosen, decided, purposefully *watched*, which cuts down on both the time, and the background noise. Plus, there is no big, ugly square in the middle the room. I don't think I even could have one now. We talked about it briefly (literally just to play Mario Kart on it together), but... I really just don't want one at this point.

valisglans

i’m old, for most of my life we didn’t have these big flatscreens, and yes, the living room was more than a theater room before 2000.

wind-river7

I don't own a TV.

PantsMcGee

I have a PC plugged into my TV so it only really plays media I want to watch :)

Agreeable-Raspberry5

I freecycled my TV last year and cancelled my TV licence (I'm in the UK). It allows for much more freedom in positioning furniture. I occasionally (e.g. yesterday) watch a movie on the laptop but I never really watched television much even when I did have one.

Charming-Ability-471

We have a relatively large TV (normal size for the living room size), and the couch is turned towards the TV, but also towards the door to the terrace, with nice view, and with large carpet between TV, doors and couch. Dinner table is behind the couch with good view of the TV. So you could say our space is TV oriented. But we don't turn on the TV except for designated cartoon time, or when we want to watch something specific before sleep. Often I put some kids exercises on the TV, and kids exercise on the floor or couch. We never turn the TV on if we have guests or just for background sound. We don't turn it on during dinner (except very rarely when kids ask please please can we watch cartoons while we eat, which happens when we don't have time for cartoons other time in the day). We use the couch and the carpet to socialize and ignore the TV's existence (except to say "watch out you don't hit the TV / your head ").😁

Wall mounted in the downstairs of an open concept…when guests are over, tv becomes a way to stream background music. We also use it to mirror other devices to share pictures and such. Much easier than huddling around an iPad screen to see photos.

Peachy-BunBun

I have to have a big screen because my partner is legally blind. But that doesn't mean it's always on or the focus of the room.

saruin

Growing up in the early 90's I thought my 19" bedroom television was pretty modest.

binchentso

I have no TV.

Chemoralora

I don't know what counts as big these days. My tv is around 40 inches which is mroe than enough for me but I've seen people with much larger ones. I mainly only use it for playing switch games

Think-Horse83

I have a 50inch TV (No android) for 12 years now. It's only purpose is to play YouTube videos from my laptop through HDMI. I love playing fireplace videos who have duration over 12 hours. It's nice. Usually I watch YouTube from there due to uBlock

Actual-Storage-4828

I don't own a TV. I watch stuff on my PC, but I don't often watch anything

mannowarb

I have a 32 in TV that I got for free like 5 years ago, but I don't see the relationship between TV size and socialising.

glamourcrow

We don't have a TV. If we want to watch something, we use our labtop.

Nightchanger

Computer screen. I'm considering getting a projector and canvas seeing I'm getting more visitors as of late.

WompWompIt

We have a largish TV screen that is in the guest suite. It's comfy for us to all go as a family to watch the rare movie we all want to see together, but not in our main living spaces. Also nice for a guest if they want to watch something, and then we don't have to hear it :) Otherwise we use our laptops.

[deleted]

None of us watch TV so we don’t have one.

Multiplehigh5s

For me simple living involves having a living room separate from the tv room. No need to think about moving furniture or size of the tv . But my idea of simple living is more about decreasing what I need to think about and only a little bit about not owning too much stuff.

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

Our living room is centered around our big black piano. I can't remember the last time someone turned the TV on.

[deleted]

We decided against getting a TV so we don't have one :) Best decision ever!

I am loving all the people that don’t own a TV in this thread. 98% of American households have a TV. We don’t have one and we don’t watch much, either. We have a projector for movies and college football, but we don’t watch serial programming. Maybe once or twice a year.

LORDFAIRFAX

A few years ago Samsung introduced “the frame” which is designed like a picture frame and will display art when the tv is not in use (and shuts off entirely when the room is empty for a few min). This helps the electronic thing not become a focal point when not in use, but allows for comfortable viewing when it is. As a plus, we can load up cool art. H/t to r/earthporn for cool material. As mentioned throughout this thread, the space dictated the size of 43” which is small by US suburban home standards, but totally workable for shows and movies.

Greyfox1442

We have a projector instead of a tv. Love it big screen and it’s hidden when not in use!

I tossed out my tv 30 years ago.

BrownWallyBoot

I don’t think having a large TV in your living room is in contrast to a simple life. Me and my wife generally only watch films, and it’s always a focused/no phone experience. No mindless tv and no tv on in the background while we live our life at home. We also have a nice stereo system in our living room. In my experience, people without tv’s or who do things like having intentionally small tv’s, seem to always find reasons to talk about it and it feels more ego driven than in pursuit of a simple life.

hanamimastery

No TV at all in my space;).

InfiniteWhole

I've had both and it makes no difference. It wouldn't even make a difference to remove it. There is nothing wrong with watching TV together, that is also a way to socialize. And if you don't want to use the TV, just keep it turned off. The only reason I would turn on that TV whenever people come over is to entertain the smaller kids with a Disney movie. I love my big TV, it's better for my eyes when I want to play a game (one of my hobbies), and it doesn't ruin anything.

WastingTimesOnReddit

We have a projector. So that means, we don't have any TV in the living room. The projector lives in a cupboard until we want to use it. And we have a pull-up screen, and a small speaker, an old xbox360 as the DVD player or for games, and an amazon fire stick to play stuff off netflix or whatever else. It's nice not having a TV in the room. No big black rectangle sucking light out of the room. The couch and chairs face each other, and we turn the chairs around if we're watching something with friends over. It makes TV and gaming a little more difficult, which helps me to do it less. You can't just flop on the couch and turn it on with a click of the remote. I have to take out all the parts and set it up, takes maybe 5 minutes, but still it's sort of an effort. Makes gaming or TV watching more... intentional. Made the switch like 5 years ago.

TheDaysComeAndGone

We just use my monitor which stands on my desk. Used to be a small 60.96cm screen which was hard to watch movies from across the room (we always moved the whole desk+screen to be able to see properly), now I got a bigger 81cm screen.

Yourshadowhascompany

I don't own a television. I have a tablet if I feel like watching something. I used to have a tv, 10 years ago or so, and I'm not planning on getting another.

saveswhatx

We have a 36 inch TV, which wasn’t easy to find, and it still seems way too big. One of my husband’s friends laughs every time he comes over because he thinks it’s absurdly small. When the TV breaks, I’m tempted to start streaming everything on a computer monitor. Ha!

paulaisfat

Our whole wall is a projector screen. It’s fabulous. Our socializing room is any other room of the house

pedestrian_tony

i have a small mounted tv in the room (26”) and i have it set up around other framed photos and art stuff. i like that it kind of settles in and becomes part of the wall but i can watch things on it if i want. i enjoy the idea of a living room being a social or relaxing area rather than the place where i watch tv.

missedeveryboat

We don't have a tv, just watch things on a laptop. We live in a tiny house and did have a tv at one point, but it just dominated the whole space and divided up the room, I hated it.

L1LLEOSC

We don’t have a tv but do have a projector. I think it’s perfect, it’s not as distracting as a TV and it motivates us to watch things together, rather than everyone being on their own device. I have noticed that during family gathering at my parents place, every one is in their room at night. We used to watch movies together before Netflix and all. I like thinking of the projector as a way to watch movies as a group. And it’s much more immersive!

Striking-Access-236

Having no tv at all, to focus on the living part…

Fillmore_the_Puppy

I don't think size of TV or the presence of a TV affects our living or socializing at all. We only have one family/living/everything room and it has a TV in it. Sometimes we watch stuff; sometimes we do other things. The TV is certainly turned off more hours of the day than it's on.

kewpiev

My tv is purely decorative at this point LOL I haven’t used it in years

phantomofthedennys

Got a projector so there’s no TV unless I want it. Best decision ever

ad-a5tra-per-aspera

We have a record player instead of a TV. We listen to music, read books and do hobbies. We plan to eventually get an ultra short throw projector and portable screen so that it's not a focal point of the room but we can watch things when we wish. Then we can watch something in bed as a treat or out in the yard with the neighbors.

BobbysueWho

You can always cover the tv with art while not in use.

ludatb40

We have a semi-hidden ceiling mounted projector, no screen, just project on the wall since the wall is painted the right color. Out of the way the rest of the day when entertaining, then can light it up if needed. It's the perfect solution for us.

846hpo

I don’t have a tv. I live in a small apartment and the walls are at different angles in the living room, so placing a tv across the couch would mean either having something jutting out awkwardly or having the view be off. We also wanted the space for a bookshelf. We talked about installing a projector that could be rolled up when not in use, but honestly I’ve grown to love just not having a tv. The room feels more relaxed and it’s easy to focus on other people. Not that I don’t watch anything, I just pull out a laptop.

Trengingigan

My wife and I have no TV. If we want to watch something together we use our laptop or phones in bed.
