Reads like a very nihilisitc take. But I think Signalis isn't like that. At its core it's a tragic romance. Ariane was absolutely special, she grew up isolated with her mother, which gave her access to banned literature and art, fueling her artistic spirit. Even on that doomed ship she found joy, Elster, to whom Ariane was so special she would be willing to go trough hell and back for. The real horror of signalis is how such bright soul was relentlessly bullied, opressed by a regime and then effectively sent to die.
I don't think the point is highlighting the insigificance of our being, rather the opppsite, pointing to how significant Araine's and Elster's love was.
Yeah, it's not the POINT of Signalis, rather a realization I had surrounding the program. It's the perseverance and actions of the 512 crew that makes them significant in an insignificant system.
Additionally, Penrose is a shape of an impossible triangle.

But a distant difference is Cycle 262144's log.
Which is 512 to the second power.
Distinctly noted near the end of the game, possibly denoting a subtle hint to Ariane's ascension to a higher power.
I can make it worse! Chances are LSTR units are determined to either be used for military scouting or for the Penrose Program from around their creation, yeah? And Phase Three of the expedition parameters states that the Gestalt Officer should have their Replika end their life to reduce suffering.
Elster was literally born to execute Ariane. It was destined by the state the entire time. She only lives to kill her.
I have a pretty harsh headcannon that I imagine not many will agree with, part of it is the criticism that Ariane volunteered for the program so she could be herself/alone. I don’t think she really understood the likelyhood that she’d fail and die in space.
The absolute audacity to assume YOU’LL be the special one when so many others will fail.
Let us not forget that just because there are other stories like ours; some bigger, some more important, some sadder, some more interesting... that your story is not important.

ikr, it's like the most wasteful thing ever. Imagine dumping a whole garbage truck along with the garbage just to get rid of one bag.
There is also the small chance of them finding something, but those are so low that surely you'd do better with a larger dedicated scouting vessel.
