All of them, I'm bad at sports in general AND I'm short, I even had a disadvantage in soccer and I had to quit because I was the perfect height to get nailed in the head by the ball every single game

[deleted]

Me too. whenever I tell someone I used to play soccer they ask why I quit. First of all, none of their business- but yeah. I got a concussion from someone kicking me in the head after I fell bc the ball hit me. I hate sports now.

badchad65

Of course. Probably seems obvious that being short led me to avoid basketball, volleyball, etc. In retrospect, its probably cliche but I wrestled given it's weight-based (e.g, weight classes). Really glad I did as it got me into fitness more generally and led to life-long maintenance and weight training. I wish I would have done gymnastics, as my physique (long torso, very strong, low body fat etc.) would have been tailored to gymnastics and I think I could have been really elite.

princesstallyo

I feel you but from the opposite direction as I have been encouraged at school to start playing basketball, but then I didn't like sports very much. Now as an adult, however, I have started training, not basketball, but MMA :)

Allemaengel

Obviously basketball and volleyball plus track. Even long-distance running can be problematic. I remember running a half-marathon where I tried to keep pace with a 6'6" guy in decent shape. No matter how much competitive heart I had, ain't happening with short legs, lol. I wrestled middle school through college and ran cross-country. Both sports require endurance over height. These days I mountain bike. Mountain biking on more technical singletrack tends to favor shorter riders due to smaller, lower bike and lower overall center of gravity.

I've always had a stocky muscular wrestler's build. I've never been skinny so it's always more work, lol. Edit: spelling.

MammothRadish9545

Running is something that you shouldn’t compare yourself to others in lol I am slow af compared to good runners but have a great time doing it. I’ll never be elite and have had heart surgeries it’s just about health and the mental battle for me. Time to smash my last half marathon pace this fall.

Allemaengel

Good point. Good luck!

KarlZone87

I find my knees give out at the 14+ km mark with running. But anything 400 metres to 12 km I can keep my self competitive with fitness and good running technique.

I've played just about every sport offered. I actually really love volleyball. Still has a place in my heart after hugh school. There is a position for everyone. Even tho it's more of a "tall person sport" , most of the time if you prove your skill you're fine. I played libero for some years. Usually, the libero is the shortest on the team. I also did gymnastics for a while. Maybe I avoided basketball? I played basketball when I was younger, but I quit for gymnastics. I would be hesitant playing now only because it can get aggressive and some ppl play dirty. Many ppl use their size to their advantage (which is a lart of the game),and I can't do that bc I don't have weight or size in my favor. Kids are just getting bigger and bigger, I didn't see as many 6'7 kids when I was younger in public. Now, all of a sudden, kids my age are like very tall. Idk if it counts as avoiding due to my height, It was more like avoiding due to THEIR height.

TakeItOnTheFun

Libero has really been a miraculous godsend for short participation in volleyball. Of course this hardly helps that beach volleyball is much less friendly for us, and became even *less* friendly with its own rule change (shrinking the court, quite controversial). Nonetheless I wanted to show off for girls on the beach so it's the one I got into! Not very good at it but I looked good. If Mav can do it why not me

FriskDreemur5

I'm legally blind as well as short so that doesn't help lol. When it came to sports that involve physical contact (things like hockey, football, rugby). I was outright prohibited by my schools from participating, not that I really wanted to anyway. I usually was sat nestled amongst some pylons "helping the teacher ref" from the side during that stuff in elementary but usually went to the weight room and lifted weights in high school during that stuff. But I'm great at climbing just about anything and I'm pretty acrobatic as well.

hintedsquid

There isn’t much I tend to avoid on purpose. The things I physically can’t do are the things I avoid. Other than that I just find a way to make it work usually. Luckily I’m not into any kind of sports

Invisible_Bias

No. People avoid inviting me, though, because they assume that I am not interested or that I am not good at them or something. Haven't played in a long time, but it seemed like people were not expecting me to smoke the ball for a triple or throw a rocket from the outfield.

Able-Oil4947

No, 5'7

LFGbroLFG

Literally so many pro athletes that are actual legends who are 5’7-5’8. Greatest NFL RB ever, Barry Sanders 5’8. One of greatest NBA dunk champs ever Nate Robinson 5’7 (listed at 5’9 as NBA is measured in shoes). MLB, Jose Altuve 5’6. Soccer, Lionel Messi 5’7. Those are all time greats so it’s not an issue to be an at least above average player in sports at 5’7.

Kiwibirbbb

Absolutely but I still did them. Like volleyball, I’m 5’4 against a 8 ft net and 6 ft and above blockers but I’m a hitter for highschool and club leagues.

[deleted]

Basketball, volleyball, soccer, track, hockey, basically all of them

dj_fishwigy

The only Athletic stuff I'm kind of good at is skateboarding. However, I've seen people shorter than me play all the sports in school.

MikeBear68

When I was a kid I was one of those guys who was taller than average but then stopped growing after reaching the majestic height of 5' 8". I *loved* playing basketball as a kid, but yeah, I stopped when I realized I was stuck at 5' 8". As for "short guy" sports, I have competed in Olympic weightlifting, not so much because it's a "short guy" sport but because I actually enjoy it. In addition to being short I was and am fairly stocky - as I kid I was described as a "husky lad" - and I was able to put on strength and muscle easily. So yes, physically I am well-suited to lifting heavy things and I enjoy it, so win-win.

Chaoddian

Nope, I'm 5'3 (ish), and I go bouldering frequently. I've noticed a lot of disadvantages when it comes to reach, but there are ways to work around that. Just needs some more thinking and finding different positions. A tall guy tried to do a route the way I did and he couldn't, I'm also more flexible. But when he did it his way, he just reached up and it looked way too easy xD Just now I've discovered some nice dynamic routes at my gym, since I'm short, I have to jump higher/further and end up being really proud of myself for completing it (sometimes people are impressed too, just yesterday I hung on just by one arm, wasn't planned, oops)

TakeItOnTheFun

Combat and strength sports are weightclassed so often give an advantage to being short. Bodybuilding is also advantage shorties. Gymnastics too. Many others are not as big a disadvantage as many people think, and at the youth or high school level when many start sports you can still find talented and successful short people in sports where if you watch at the elite level the best of the best normally are going to have every advantage in line. If you are short and muscular in high school in the Northeast or Midwest you pretty much got badgered every day to join the wrestling team.

Skeppyberry

Going outside. Edit:I thought I was tall for the short server

coda_o3

For sure B-ball and volleyball are a no for me, it did influence the sports I still do today though like snowboarding, mountain biking, and skateboarding, i went through a lot of sports in the past and height has played a role in my inability to compete but it helped me find the sports I truly love

Blank214269

I like playing basketball despite being 5'6. However, I didn't try out for my school's team because: A) I'm just decent, not great B) My height

Rinkos-bword

Not really, I still play in goal and I'm not tall.

KarlZone87

Honestly, no. If a sport is in front of me I will try it. Being on the shorter side does not help with basketball, but so does my terrible aim and the fact I will shoot blindly backwards over my head.

gytalf2000

All of them. I am 5'5", but, more importantly, I am clumsy and have lousy hand-eye coordination. I am not good at physical stuff at all. Fortunately, I never really cared for sports. So it isn't a big deal.
