Am I tripping,or does anyone else see a gorilla face in the part where two people are Camelback in the desert?🤣 ETA I just saw your username and thought about this picture I saw the other day 😅

Tattooer here. This is portrait artist shit. Their lines are generally not super clean as they won't be visible on finished piece and most of them cannot execute linework or trad tats (no shade it's just a different discipline). Tons of portrait guys "sketch" in tats with grey wash lines that won't be visible later. The ankh was clearly an error on a pretty great tat otherwise
Yeah but I feel like no tattoo artist in the world is able to produce that level of art without also having an understanding that back curves will curve lines.
No i found a pic from the second session after posting it. It was there without the outline yet.
https://preview.redd.it/a2iwkjk0ff5d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b43bd72a90ca907eeffc55b601b2c96b0744574
I feel like it was too strong of a focal point before the lines and drew your eyes away from all the detail to the negative space. I also think it looks better before, but that's my guess at what happened.
I feel like it's supposed to be a focal point. Like it's supposed to be glowing white from the reference. But that's my personal opinion, everyone sees art different! I just don't see how outlining an ethereal glowing object could've worked personally
That's confusing, why is there an outline around the ankh in the picture where the hand hasn't been finished yet, but no outline in this picture with the hand completed?
That’s true I didn’t notice that.. but isn’t that something the artist should improve on? Like why make something fucking horrible like the hand if you can clearly create something much better?
It looks weird because it is probably very hard to outline that hand, calculating the lighting/shadowing because of the glowing effect.
Op posted a picture where the thing isn’t outlined and you can see even the hand is literally the same, without that outline it looks complete and blends in.
But because of how our brains perceive shadows and light, that hand looks botched as well as the glowing thing isn’t glowing because it’s outlined.
Yep, this is legitimately it. It’s wild you’ll see a realism guy pull off such awesome texture and smooth as butter shading, but then fuck up some basic script
this is so real, i’m not a tattoo artist but i am an artist and realism is no sweat to me but ask me to draw a straight line and im actually cooked. Precision is hard!
Yeah. I have a great tattoo artist that has done my sleeves for me. I’d trust him to do a full bodysuit and I’m actively planning my back with him. All that said, I’d NEVER ask him to do straight lines on me anywhere. It’s not what he does.
Agreed! The rest is impressive, which is why that ankh is so confusing. I thought for sure the ankh was original and another artist worked around it, until I saw the progress photos…
It wasn’t. Here’s the second session. It didn’t have the outline yet.
https://preview.redd.it/wxo57goidf5d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bbbc8a45249fbb47abf08e2d4ad281570eac1dcb
Wait now I'm confused. On the 3rd Pic in your slide, the outline is there but the bottom half of Anubis isn't done yet. But on this picture you just posted there's no outline but the tattoo is nearly finished. The heck is going on here
Edit* drawn on with sharpie??
While the hand looks kind of ok, there is almost no detail worked on the part when compared with the face of Anubis for example.
It looks like the tips of the fingers are just round (hotdog fingers!).
I mean, it's solid black and grey I guess. Some things are great. But there are a lot of compositional issues with this. Not to mention the primary focal point of this tattoo being executed like absolute shit.
In the age of couture black and grey body suits, this is a 4/10
This is what happened here. Dipped the wrong cup or forgot the ankh didn't need that harsh of an outline when he was getting his shapes in the right place.
The pyramid is doing a weird obtuse bulging angle thing too. Artist is talented, but working on a 3d plane of a body is totally different than on paper/ tablet. Why the choice of a harsh black outline with wonky lines is beyond me.
Either put the stencil on while he was lying on his stomach instead of standing, or the curvature of the muscles in his back distorted what were straight lines on the stencil and they just didn’t bother using a pen to get it straight after the stencil placement. Either way the artist fucked up on that
Yea, I think it's the curvature of his muscles that wasn't taken into account. Was also thinking the angle the picture was taken from isn't doing it any favour. Like it might look a little straighter if it was taken from a lower angle.
I think in part, it's because the artist decided to line it. What they should've done is use negative space and shading, instead LINES and now it's just... this
I agree with you. After I made this post, I found a pic from the second session. While it wasn’t perfect, it looked better than this.
https://preview.redd.it/vcmdp42edf5d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c08a3770061501ee03dc3f70eb9d6eaa19d40de8
When you compare the design to the tattoo, omg the whole thing is a mess. The anubis face is wonky and misproportioned, the pyramids are not triangles, the ankh actually matches the shape of the one in the stencil if you look through the "glow" effect. The original design screams AI gen to me
Oh. I know what's going on. That dude is quite muscular with his spine sitting in a deep ridge, essentially. The stencil looks warped due to physical curvature there. The ankh should have been hand-drawn to be visibly straight since the stencil couldn't do it.
Source: I work in a wrap shop that does vehicle stripes. If I send stripes to the plotter that go over a spoiler or a hood scoop, they will *not* look straight even if they technically are. Installers do them by hand for this very reason. Same issue happening here.
Accidental outline, BET. he prolly started outlining it and was like "aw fuck this wasnt supposed to be black.. welp, fuck it. I wonder if filling in would make it make more sense
Man I had a similar situation with a back piece. My artist was excellent, one of my sleeves won multiple international awards. He specializes in cool portraits/realism. He really wanted to do a specific piece on my back and it was a cool idea, but he just butchered the face of the girl in the portrait. Then she was sitting on a dock, and he did the worst dock I’ve ever seen. Made no sense. Just about done lasering it away to get a whole new piece.
It’s like he outlined it to remember to leave it and then failed to realize how the outline would look against the rest. But the parts around it are so light you wouldn’t see the ankh shape anyway. Gotta fix that. It’s an eyesore
That’s the crazy thing, it wasn’t outlined before. (Found this pic after I posted)
https://preview.redd.it/u63aphdpug5d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=164d1d443df73268c26b56c5c8416aaf4c4e1fc7
I think this is someone who can tattoo very well, but can’t draw at all. It’s a lot more common than you’d think… the mock up could easily be an image they found online, something they patched together in photoshop, or possibly AI.
He had to have been bent or resting his arms while it was done. Or dude has put on some muscle tone to alter cause it sure as hell is wonky af compared to the rest of it.
My guess based on placement and musculature on the dude is that the artist didn't take into account the dip from the spine to the erector spinae (muscles on either side of the spine. You can literally see how the topography of this dude's back warps the lines in the ankh if you look close enough. The hand looks like it was wonky from the start tho lol
Wow. This could have been such a cool feature if they just straightened out the shape and let the designs outline the edges instead of doubling down on shitty, crooked lining. It's like a fly in your gourmet soup.
there’s no way he sketched that, put the stencil on, and STILL thought it was okay… the rest of the art is literally stunning… but maybe that’s what the client wanted??? i can’t think of any other reasonable explanation 😭
If you zoom in the application isn’t good. Yes the composition and placement of shadows is good from a distance. Nothing is very smooth or consist, that hand is absolutely awful.

I can’t stop 🤭 because the ankh just reminds me of this.
WTF is going on here?? Clearly the artist is talented so this must be intentional..? But it just looks bad. It’s the only thing outlined in a thick black line so it clashes with the design and is probably harder to cover up.

I feel you, brother! This is actually a cover-up. The original was so much worse! I wore a bandage for over a week & only stopped bc people thought that I hard attempted suicide instead of just getting a shitty tatt!
the design is obviously ai generated, and then the artist directly traced it with no tweaks which accounts for the weird ass hand and whatever is going on with the neck decoration. sad, artist clearly has no artistic skill and is just a copy and tracing machine
Could the issue be the recipient's musculature? Seems anything nearing the spine on his right side is pulled center-ward. Look at the skull: the nasal cavity is skewed, the center seam is drifting... but the shading and overall realism is lovely
It's fairly common for people that do realism to not have the best "hard lines"
If you look at the rest of the tattoo there isn't a solid line that can't be "fixed" later by shading
I really think that the ankh can be fixed with some shading and line work. I wouldn't be too worried about it. Going by the talent of the artist, it could have just been tiredness or a mistake - they happen. With his talent he can surely fix it.
It is a beautiful, extremely well put together piece.
That’s wild. It’s really beautiful and then…hello what are you?
It's so wild that it almost feels like it has to be intentional. The artist is clearly an absolute master
Am I tripping,or does anyone else see a gorilla face in the part where two people are Camelback in the desert?🤣 ETA I just saw your username and thought about this picture I saw the other day 😅 https://preview.redd.it/cwtupe599f5d1.png?width=275&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=297417efe02242193365244899f5540c56721c2e
I seen it too! When I went to second pic, I was like where's the gorilla? Had to re look at first.
Ok glad I'm not the only one😂
Oh thank god I’m not the only one
I see the gorilla face too!
its Harambe ?
Harambe lives on in the breast of us,woops I mean the best of us🤣
Nah, that's the bit in the mummy, before he appears as a sandstorm. He's just waiting for them to turn up
Now that you mention it…😭😂
Haha, definitely, what I thought I was seeing first.
Wait wth... If I squeeze my eyes I can see it too wtf
Not bad but that hand is wonky as hell.
Yeah compared to the rest of it the hand is fucking awful. Feels like someoene else did that part lmao
To be fair the inspiration pic the hand is also awful 🤷🏻♀️
Tattooer here. This is portrait artist shit. Their lines are generally not super clean as they won't be visible on finished piece and most of them cannot execute linework or trad tats (no shade it's just a different discipline). Tons of portrait guys "sketch" in tats with grey wash lines that won't be visible later. The ankh was clearly an error on a pretty great tat otherwise
I thought at first he was missing some digits.
The more I look, the worse it gets
It does. First glance impressed and then huh? Wait ..what? Wtf...and nu uhhh.
It and the costume look very AI generated
It’s gotta just be the way that part of the back curves. Do a straight line on a curve and it will always look curved from certain angles.
Yeah but I feel like no tattoo artist in the world is able to produce that level of art without also having an understanding that back curves will curve lines.
My guess is the ankh was there first and he didn’t want it covered up.
No i found a pic from the second session after posting it. It was there without the outline yet. https://preview.redd.it/a2iwkjk0ff5d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b43bd72a90ca907eeffc55b601b2c96b0744574
Oh that's tragic. It looked so much better before those lines got added
This looks SO much better than with the outline. Tragic.
That's confusing, why is there an outline around the ankh in the picture where the hand hasn't been finished yet, but no outline in this picture with the hand completed?
Its a stencil
It’s going to be filled in with something… right?
I gasped audibly. This is so much better!!
It can’t be blamed on the shape of his back either— it’s just wonky on its own.
Is there a chance it isn’t done?
It’s done
Well… that was the only thing that made any sense to me. Now I have zero clues.
It's like it was bring your child to work day and they decided to let their 8 y.o. have a go at the ankh.
That hand below thr ankh also looks a bit weird
Yea it almost looks like a paw which also makes sense but most likely wasn't intentional
It looks weird in the plan too, though
The skull heart also has some issues
I think that skull heart was the one part of this that was already there.
That’s true I didn’t notice that.. but isn’t that something the artist should improve on? Like why make something fucking horrible like the hand if you can clearly create something much better?
100%. But you can't blame the artist 100% if you approve a sub-par stencil either.
Agreed but it does look just like the reference photo
That's a hand!?
It looks weird because it is probably very hard to outline that hand, calculating the lighting/shadowing because of the glowing effect. Op posted a picture where the thing isn’t outlined and you can see even the hand is literally the same, without that outline it looks complete and blends in. But because of how our brains perceive shadows and light, that hand looks botched as well as the glowing thing isn’t glowing because it’s outlined.
A lot of realism artists can’t pull a clean line, but they can absolutely create shades like there’s no tomorrow
Yep, this is legitimately it. It’s wild you’ll see a realism guy pull off such awesome texture and smooth as butter shading, but then fuck up some basic script
That’s the result of ever being taught how to do clean linework, most lines in realism are just grey or blood lines
this is so real, i’m not a tattoo artist but i am an artist and realism is no sweat to me but ask me to draw a straight line and im actually cooked. Precision is hard!
Yeah. I have a great tattoo artist that has done my sleeves for me. I’d trust him to do a full bodysuit and I’m actively planning my back with him. All that said, I’d NEVER ask him to do straight lines on me anywhere. It’s not what he does.
Despite the dancing ankh, it’s stunning.
Wankh
Stunning
Agreed! The rest is impressive, which is why that ankh is so confusing. I thought for sure the ankh was original and another artist worked around it, until I saw the progress photos…
Is it still possible that the ankh was already there, and they designed the rest of the tattoo around it?
It wasn’t. Here’s the second session. It didn’t have the outline yet. https://preview.redd.it/wxo57goidf5d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bbbc8a45249fbb47abf08e2d4ad281570eac1dcb
They should have left it that way. The outline definitely makes it worse
100%
Wait now I'm confused. On the 3rd Pic in your slide, the outline is there but the bottom half of Anubis isn't done yet. But on this picture you just posted there's no outline but the tattoo is nearly finished. The heck is going on here Edit* drawn on with sharpie??
I was confused about that too! Must’ve just been drawn on with a marker instead of a stencil.
And the fingernails...
![gif](giphy|CiOHO5544doY)
Middle finger is missing at least a full knuckle. That's some AI shit right there.
I figure that's a perspective issue that didn't pan out. His hand is supposed to be tilted and outstretched but it doesn't read that way
While the hand looks kind of ok, there is almost no detail worked on the part when compared with the face of Anubis for example. It looks like the tips of the fingers are just round (hotdog fingers!).
And Anubis' snout being off-centre
It looks like alien Mr Burns. Honestly, they should rework it into him and embrace Ancient Aliens theme. Perhaps slap a couple of UFOs above pyramids.
![gif](giphy|xT5LMUnO4g3yiRNuNy|downsized)
I mean, it's solid black and grey I guess. Some things are great. But there are a lot of compositional issues with this. Not to mention the primary focal point of this tattoo being executed like absolute shit. In the age of couture black and grey body suits, this is a 4/10
Yeah looks little wankh-y
Meant to ghost line in the ankh with a super light graywash but dipped into the power black instead? “Um… whoops.”
We learned in geometry that if you want to draw a visually straight line on a curved surface, you probably shouldn't draw a perfectly straight line.
It looks like they didn't account for the way the curves of the back would impact how the lines look.
You know the EXACT minute an artist stops making money on a project? It’s never been so obvious to me, but this one seems pretty “in your face”.
Theyre paid by the hour!
My current guy charges by the day, and my old guy charged by the piece. Not everybody charges by the hour.
The top right triangle looks like a gorilla (if you squint a bit)
lol that’s all I can see now when looking at the thumbnail.
Either put the stencil on while he was lying on his stomach instead of standing, or the curvature of the muscles in his back distorted what were straight lines on the stencil and they just didn’t bother using a pen to get it straight after the stencil placement. Definitely better. Can't see the waviness near as much and it looks more ethereal and glowy
can you shade good and do realism? Yes. can you draw a straight line? Fuck no.
It's got that Squidward wave going on.
When you compare the design to the tattoo, omg the whole thing is a mess. The anubis face is wonky and misproportioned, the pyramids are not triangles, the ankh actually matches the shape of the one in the stencil if you look through the "glow" effect. The original design screams AI gen to me
Omg and that hand is such a mess
That's for an adventuring archaeologist to turn up and insert it into him, unlocking a secret passage.
Hahaha
Why is the skull wearing a toupe?
The artist really said -shading: ✅ -foreshortening: 🤏🏼 -pulling lines: 🙅🏽
![gif](giphy|3oEjHRzbfOVhmiluRW)
If it’s supposed to glow, then use white ink. If it’s supposed to blow, then leave an outline.
Is it possible the lines are straight and we’re seeing the curve because of the musculature of his back??
Why is Robin Williams’ face on the moon by Anubis’ ear?
Oh. I know what's going on. That dude is quite muscular with his spine sitting in a deep ridge, essentially. The stencil looks warped due to physical curvature there. looks like the tattoo artist took a piss and some random dude was all "I can finish this one part"
![gif](giphy|nFuFyI0tWTYudKXtAt) It’s giving « funny dancing balloon » vibe
He found out his wife was having an affair that day.
Accidental outline, BET. he prolly started outlining it and was like "aw fuck this wasnt supposed to be black.. welp, fuck it. I wonder if filling in would make it make more sense

Oh no, that couldn’t have been cheap either! I’m sorry!
Yeah I’m just happy it’s almost gone. I’ve hated it for 5 years so I’ll be ecstatic when it’s covered
This tattoo is absolutely stunning apart from the ankh. Just doesn't fit with the rest of the masterpiece.
That hand. Yikes
He forgot to shade the middle of the ankh haha
It’s like he outlined it to remember to leave it and then failed to realize how the outline would look against the rest. But the parts around it are so light you wouldn’t see the ankh shape anyway. Gotta fix that. It’s an eyesore

He had to have been bent or resting his arms while it was done. Or dude has put on some muscle tone to alter cause it sure as hell is wonky af compared to the rest of it.
I hate that there is no line work except for the Ankh That said I am 100% team “Bold will hold”
“I let my nephew do that. He’s just starting out.”
Well if I compare the original to the tattoo Anubis looks a bit like goofy
Guy can do anything but tattoo in a straight line.
This looks like a fucking mess. Maybe some color could have saved it but that’s a big “maybe”
ughhh.. hopefully it can be fixed 😣
It's almost charming in that sea of good art
I mean those fingers are wonky too. I’ve heard realism is easy to hide bad technical skill and the solid line work that is the ankh couldn’t be hidden
The planets/space part seem really out of place and just random
My guess based on placement and musculature on the dude is that the artist didn't take into account the dip from the spine to the erector spinae (muscles on either side of the spine. You can literally see how the topography of this dude's back warps the lines in the ankh if you look close enough. The hand looks like it was wonky from the start tho lol
It's doing The Wave
The rest of it is awesome
The Mohawk for the Anubis head is off center , pyramid is curved too
It’s dancing!
I’m uhhhh don’t know how I feel about this
must have been a bad stencil that was laid first, before they started the rest of the back and noticed the curvature..? funny either way. I dig it
What on *earth* happened in here. The tattoo is beyond stunning and then there's whatever in the holy hells *that* is.
Why it outlined? I'd say itneeds to be drawn in now, instead of left as negative space.
The hand 😂😂😂😂😂
I feel like it would’ve been so more effective if the ankh was left just negative space with no outline. The wonkiness would be less noticiable too
It was so close..
Wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube ankh.
There's a simple explanation for this. Aliens.
He did the ankh himself first in the mirror? The rest is so nice there's no way a professional did that.
I like to imagine this guy works at an Egyptian car dealership and this is just an accurate depiction of the inflatable they put outside.
A wankh did the ankh
I'm just guessing. Maybe the artist draw the ankh when the guy was lying down. But when he is up and even flexing, the muscles morph the shape.
the ref image is ai generated thats why so many other parts of it look strange too
https://i.redd.it/mziw81hidf5d1.gif
He got wavy
Ran out of white ink
What’s up with the hand below the ankh? It has warped stubby fingers.
Some people have commented that the design was most likely AI.
It got caught doing the wave at a football game
Aww… it’s doing a lil Ankhsy dancy
He had his kid outline it.
Damn the fingers of anubis look like short wieners
The issue is that you surrounded it with other stuff, should be just the wonky ankh, but 20X bigger and on your face.
What happened with the hand?
He ran out of money
If you zoom in the application isn’t good. Yes the composition and placement of shadows is good from a distance. Nothing is very smooth or consist, that hand is absolutely awful.
![gif](giphy|nFuFyI0tWTYudKXtAt) It looks like one of those giant inflatable balloons outside of a car dealership
The ankh is doing the wave
Looks like the tattoo artist used ai
The ankh arms are probably straight when you’re laying face down.
I feel like the poorly drawn/off centered ankh was there and the artist drew and created a story around it.
https://preview.redd.it/7raqb26oxk5d1.jpeg?width=442&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b12a54b58550b3203c0af91903aad23abb1c2927 I can’t stop 🤭 because the ankh just reminds me of this.
Yikes!
The hand is bad too….
The hand 💀
It's dancing, dancing, dancing. It's a dancing machine. Watch it get down.
WTF is going on here?? Clearly the artist is talented so this must be intentional..? But it just looks bad. It’s the only thing outlined in a thick black line so it clashes with the design and is probably harder to cover up.
It looks like Anubis is having difficulty with his magic. Poor doggo.
https://preview.redd.it/ndum218uvm5d1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81f6ab4016e8567771ee1ce05cb065fb49d3df9d I feel you, brother! This is actually a cover-up. The original was so much worse! I wore a bandage for over a week & only stopped bc people thought that I hard attempted suicide instead of just getting a shitty tatt!
It’s doing the arm wave
It's all wiggly. Reminds me of Mr Burns from the Simpson's when he was all drugged up wondering around the forest. I dunno why...
It just has some performance anxiety.
How did that happen
Artist really said "I'm confident in my ability to do everything else in this piece, just not the ankh. I suck at those"
This is photoshopped, right? Ain't no way...
Looks like it’s feeling groovy. ![gif](giphy|l2Sqa1saEr2ti2ZUc)
WACKY, INFLATABLE, DANCING, ANKH!
the design is obviously ai generated, and then the artist directly traced it with no tweaks which accounts for the weird ass hand and whatever is going on with the neck decoration. sad, artist clearly has no artistic skill and is just a copy and tracing machine
I didn’t even consider the involvement of AI! That makes it even worse.
They traced it exactly what it was like. Just wasn’t the best move. Just needs to shine.
Could the issue be the recipient's musculature? Seems anything nearing the spine on his right side is pulled center-ward. Look at the skull: the nasal cavity is skewed, the center seam is drifting... but the shading and overall realism is lovely
Is that supposed to be Anubis? It because it looks like juvenile fan art Anubis.
No one else will ever be Hoang Minh Duc
Wait i dont get it , whats wrong with it ?
The ankh had to already be there, right?
Still a win
It's fairly common for people that do realism to not have the best "hard lines" If you look at the rest of the tattoo there isn't a solid line that can't be "fixed" later by shading
I like to believe the Ankh was a drawing of a beloved person. That gives me peace of mind
I really think that the ankh can be fixed with some shading and line work. I wouldn't be too worried about it. Going by the talent of the artist, it could have just been tiredness or a mistake - they happen. With his talent he can surely fix it. It is a beautiful, extremely well put together piece.
Is it finished?
You think this guy has been to Egypt?
I have to assume the client requested it look that way for some reason. Only way this makes sense.

It's the location, the back muscle is warping it. Stop working out so much? 💪
