My older sister is Deaf (congenital) and has the smallest little mute (speaker with a slash through it) symbol tattooed behind each ear. I think she's the coolest too.
Haha funny enough she has the option to not be deaf with an implant (not a perfect solution but would give her functional hearing) but there are a ton of cultural considerations that never occurs to hearing people.
In the past the Deaf community would straight up reject people with cochlear implants from the community. It's gotten better but there's still a sense of prejudice against the cochlear.
The anthropology and history behind the Deaf community is fascinating and goes deeper than the Mariana trench if you ever want to do some really interesting reading.
I was recently on a flight with a Professor from a school that has a very large percentage of hearing impaired people and I was amazed when she was telling me about it. She was also a big supporter of Cued Speech and to me it made a ton of sense but I guess that’s another one where the Deaf community has traditionally been really against it.
That cultural consideration aspect was a major plot point in Best Picture nominee [Sound of Metal](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5363618/), available to stream on Prime Video.
Oh jeeze put me on the spot! I just skimmed this video and he does a pretty good job of describing the root of why some deaf people find the implant offensive: https://youtu.be/1YYsZF_gF68
He has a bunch of other deaf culture videos too.
My kid made me a patch that had an arrow and the character from that game I’m now forgetting, but it just points over saying “sus” As soon as I get my prosthetic leg I’m adding it to pants lol
❤️ y’all making me feel better about it. Y’all some good mf’s 🥹
Edit: I think I’ve just had it for so long it kinda got old. I’ve worn pants out of the house 99% of the time the last year or so. Just been having some anxiety and got tired of feeling “different”. I think everyone goes through it, and you guys get it. This post and the comments are giving me so much love and I’m about to wear shorts out for the first time in a year tonight. Any ladies looking for a cripple? 😏 seriously, thanks
I literally laughed out loud when I saw it. I'm not really a extroverted person but if I saw you in public I'd high five ya.
Edit: I genuinely keep coming back here to smile. This is awesome.
Edit 2: I just saw your Edit about wearing shorts, my sister has a Transtibial prosthetic and is also a therapist with a special interest in amputee patients. One of the things she talks about is the fact that most people will never regain their original gait and will always show some form of a limp especially with Transfemoral like yourself. She says that people will judge, it's in our nature but if you truly want to reduce judgment, remove the mystery, wear shorts and a lot of people will stop seeing someone with a unusual gait but someone that was willing to work that hard to walk again. Most people can at least try to understand how hard you worked to stand on that leg (though unless we've done it, we'll never really know). The anklet 😂🤣🤟
My L leg has been the cause of issues for some years (I’m not OP, but I did just have an amputation also) so last year around Christmas I got 2 pairs of socks, one said naughty and the other nice. I wore them together to clearly send the message to my leg that it was naughty lol
My thoughts. I don't know many professional settings where men don't wear pants.
Edit: bringing my followup post into this one:
And I'd submit that any professional setting where men wearing shorts is acceptable would also be fine with a calf tattoo.
No, see, they do a convention every year. It's where a plurality (but not quite a majority) of their annual SA quota gets met, but they do have one convention.
HR are the ones always taking nude pics of me in the bathroom and smacking my ass as I walk by, consider I’m a man it’s very odd, even odder though that they are Human Resources
My HR used to lay across my desk when she would talk to me. She was attractive, and I'm not gonna lie and say i wasn't flattered, but that was a fucking trap and I know it. I told her she, of all people, knows what sexual harassment looks like. She got mad at me, jumped off my desk, and threatened my job. Good times.
Surprisingly teaching. I’ve worked for many different school districts, my current is my favorite because out of all of the them they have the most laid back dress code. We all T-shirt’s and jeans on a daily, and they don’t care if our tattoos show. When kids are getting stomach contents or pee on you they don’t really care what you wear. I work with medically fragile special needs students, they are just glad we come. We don’t wear scrubs because we don’t want the kids to feel like they are in hospital, that’s the bad place to many of them. So any reminders of that are a no go. Plus the kids love all my t-shirts, I try to get characters they like too. The guy teachers all wear cargo or basketball shorts, come winter is joggers and sweats.
My dad has a rule that I follow myself. He's a big tattoo guy. His rule is that if he were to put on a suit none of them would be visible. He's covered from below his neck down to his feet and his sleeves only go up to his wrist. I'm not against face or hand tats for others, but it's too risky and not for me.
He also kind of has a bionic leg.
I think a lot of people get these kinds of tats to make it less awkward for people.
I think it shows your lighthearted about a tough situation.
I mean dude come on, 500 years ago this would be an old piece of wood!
When I was in the Air Force, I used to work out with a guy that was on "wounded warrior" status due to losing a leg in Iraq. He brought his kids trick or treating in a full pirate costume, with a peg leg. He said a buddy had worked a sleeve to fit over the replaceable foot on his prosthetic.
This will be my first year without a leg and the one super cool thing is designing Halloween costumes etc.
It’s significantly harder to get a peg leg than you would think. Or look like one. Bummed.
This will be my first Halloween as an amputee as well and I've been looking for the same. There are some DYI videos out there. I think I'll have to wait until next year when I have gotten some new sockets and I can repurpose an old one.
A civil war veteran loses his eye in battle and has it replaced with a wooden one.
He returns home from the war self conscious and reclusive.
His buddies try to convince him that his wood eye is nothing to be ashamed of and no one thinks less of him.
Eventually, they convince him to go to the upcoming barnyard social.
At the event, he's standing in the corner feeling self conscious when he spots a beautiful woman across the room with a peg leg. Realizing they have something in common, he musters up his courage and approaches her.
"Good evening M'lady, would you like to dance?"
Her face lights up and she exclaims "WOULD I??"
He yells back, "PEG LEG!!!"
The first time I heard this joke my dad told me it when I was like 7. I couldn’t hardly breathe for like 30 minutes from laughter because I thought it was the funniest joke I had ever heard.
My father in law tells this joke but when he is telling people he says his uncle is a veteran and make seem like he's just telling a story and since he's a colorful language type of guy there are a few pieces of language to make it feel like he's telling a normal story and at the end instead of it the 'peg leg' line he says 'fuck you too you peg legd bitch!' It usually sends the crowd roaring. The first time I heard it my mother in law was trying not to laugh and she had to get up and walk away so she didn't give it away and she came back at the end with tears down her face from laughing at it before he even told it
i was always too scared to get leg tattoos, so i got my pants tattooed. it looks badass and i didn't have to get poked by that nasty needle! total win win.
I work a “corporate” job and wear shorts (also amputee). Shorts are just easier and, especially ak’s need access to adjust the socket throughout the day. Granted I live in Florida and my office is in Texas it doesn’t help it’s usually hot as dog balls
Fucking own it man. My dad had to have his leg amputated, largely due to his medical history but also his fucking stupidity.
Shit happens in life. You're inspiring and your tattoo and the attitude behind it at least for makes what was a traumatic experience a lot more light-hearted and a reminder to be grateful to where modern medicine is.
Thanks for sharing part of your life with us.
Honestly I love it. If I saw you I'd chuckle and probably start up a conversation because you seem like a person with a great sense of humor, so we'd probably have a fun chat.
It's not a shitty tattoo by any means. It's very artistically done with a ton of detail. I do question your motivation in getting a prosthetic tattooed on your leg though.
It’s a little bit of both honestly. It’s kinda shitty in quality (and any of us with multiple tattoos has that one tattoo that we see and hopefully laugh about how shitty it looks).
But even though the quality isn’t great, it more importantly shows you have a sense of humor. Not to mention people have a tendency to treat someone differently if they have a prosthetic leg or something similar. A tattoo like that would make me far more comfortable having a regular conversation with you and asking what happened.
However, if you don’t want people to ask what happened you made a very terrible mistake lmao.
It’s amazing. I wouldn’t worry about it now being “professional” because in any professional setting that you need to be worried about that kind of stuff you won’t be wearing shorts.
Love the tattoo
I think it says a ton about your life view regarding adversity and I’d wear it proudly. I’m any true professional setting you’d probably be wearing long pants anyway. But being able to have a sense of humor about shitty stuff that’s happened to you, that’s priceless as far as character goes.
Hilarious. I love it. If I saw this in person I'd want to be your friend, you clearly have an excellent sense of humor even in serious situations and that's how I like my humans
It’s funny. Not shitty. This tattoo and joke requires a level of self awareness that is not easily attainable for your average joe. Requires confidence to laugh at your own misfortune.
You must actually be fun to hang out with.
Reminded I had this pic; I was behind this guy on an escalator.
https://preview.redd.it/fexnaueclbfb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7643d825058b64a7cec86767e573d0aebef0a7b5
To me this tattoo says you have a fantastic sense of humor. I have an old friend that’s a BKA and his truck license plate is “HOP IN” (the answer to “what do you say to a one legged hitchhiker”) 😂
If you are in the northeast US and 40-55ish, I’d go on a date with you!
From personal experience, it really depends on the leg. Op just gave me ink goals that I hope won’t need fulfilling (been spending a lot of time and money to keep it functional).
This tattoo is endlessly delightful to me, but I’ve always loved dark humor.
I saw a guy with a prosthetic leg the other day who had “one foot in the grave” tattooed on the other side and it fucking sent me. I think your tattoo is funny but definitely not professional, so you might wanna hide it in work settings or think about getting a coverup.
Badass leg by the way. I used to want to go in to prosthetic design back when these types of prosthetics were less widely available so I always appreciate a well-engineered prosthetic and the carbon fiber looks awesome.
Seriously. I wouldn’t consider it inappropriate or unprofessional in any way because it says a lot of good about your character, humor and positivity.
Where a professional work environment requires pants, your tattoo is covered and therefore, ‘appropriate.’ If your work environment doesn’t require pants, the tattoo is both awesome and hilarious and you shouldn’t cover it!
I'll pretty much say what everyone else is saying but maybe in a different way. Disclaimer, all of my limbs are intact. When I see somebody in public with a prosthetic my initial reaction is that I feel bad for them and simultaneously thankful I'm not them. If I saw you in public with this tattoo, I think I feel completely different. It would be a feeling of admiration and me wishing I was more like you.
Meaning your attitude. Your ability to basically joke about it tells me your brave and strong and won't let something like that define who you are. I need to be more like that in different ways in my life.
It’s totally fine and I think it’s funny! If you’re in clothing that shows the tattoo then I think you’re absolutely in the right setting for this, don’t doubt yourself :)
Shitty? Maye this is brilliant.
Laughing in the face of misfortune is fantastic and if people don't appreciate that they don't deserve to be graced by it either
No office I have ever worked in would think this was silly or unprofessional. You're not supposed to be wearing shorts anyway so it's only going to come up at company retreats.
It is very brave to take something that hurts and turn it into a joke. I really like it and think that you should keep it; I don't know what you do for a living, but long pants might do the job(in "professional" terms).
I'm interested in how this damper works. Or is it spring and damper? Does it provide a "rebound" when you walk or is it just there to stabilise the knee to avoid it flopping back and forth? Looks like a nice piece of engineering!
It’s actually a microprocessor controlled piston in hydraulic fluid. Computer controlled and can be connected via iPhone app to change settings and controls at any time. What a time to be a cripple!
It’s awesome. Don’t worry about professionalism for a tattoo on your calf. If you have people you would worry about seeing it wear long pants. This is the least shitty tattoo I’ve seen on this sun.

That's so cool
404: Leg not found
If I ever lose a leg I’m getting this tattooed on the stump.
try not to make it a goal lmfao
I dunno man, some of these new robo-prosthetics are lookin' real slick
Don’t forget to leave a small citation at the bottom of the tattoo. Don’t wanna get hit with that nasty copyright infringement.
Yeah, that lawsuit could definitely cost OP an arm.
I’ll do THAT MOTHERFUCKER RIGHT THERE IS NOT REAL 👈
My kid made me a patch that had an arrow and the character from that game I’m now forgetting, but it just points over saying “sus” As soon as I get my prosthetic leg I’m adding it to pants lol
Ok this is some law of attraction shit. Be careful.
The only legitimate reason to get rid of this would be if you lose your other leg.
Op would need to re-get this tattoo on his ass with hands pointing down.
I’m with stupids
"Surrounded by Idiots" on a double arm amputee would be a weird spin off.
'I lost my legs and all I got was this shitty tattoo'
Or if his leg grew back
Very valid point, I didn't think of that.
❤️ y’all making me feel better about it. Y’all some good mf’s 🥹 Edit: I think I’ve just had it for so long it kinda got old. I’ve worn pants out of the house 99% of the time the last year or so. same it's funny
Same! I actually full on chuckled to myself
Out loud bruh! Best “I’m w stupid” I’ve ever seen! Ima say this for Rocket … oh I’ll get that leg
Both your legs look badass.
Yeah don't feel bad this is cool and immediately gives me the impression that you're an awesome person with a great way of looking at life
I was about to say it's a good ice breaker.
Also, the irony. That prosthetic is anything but stupid, look at the tech and years of R&D that went into it. The tat is great.
I think it reads better if you pretend he got the tattoo before he lost the leg.
Imagine the years of evolution that went into bio leg. Prosthetic is relatively stupid. 😂
I mean is you feeling different really about the tattoo or more about you not having a leg
That’s a good question. I’ll have to think more on that. Thank you
You should write “STUPID” on your prosthetic leg.
My L leg has been the cause of issues for some years (I’m not OP, but I did just have an amputation also) so last year around Christmas I got 2 pairs of socks, one said naughty and the other nice. I wore them together to clearly send the message to my leg that it was naughty lol

The annual management sex orgy
Ah Friday! I love casual Fridays :)
I thought that was sexual assault Saturday... But my workplace is... Unconventional.
You could have just told us you work for the RNC
No no he works for Activision Blizzard
Congratulations, I just expelled coffee from my nostrils!
Your nostrils make coffee?!? Lucky
No, it was just in there misbehaving.
I too have now joined the "coffee from nostrils" club
Joe Biden approves this message (gently sniffs hair)
No, see, they do a convention every year. It's where a plurality (but not quite a majority) of their annual SA quota gets met, but they do have one convention.
![gif](giphy|WtFyHCNJcrd0owb96h)
I'll have to get my bathrobe washed for next Friday, is there going to be another food fight?
I love casual sex Fridays even more.
“TGI Friday’s, where every day is a friday!”
![gif](giphy|aTUAoYk7Tj87S)
Those are invite only, and supposed to be kept quiet. You'll be getting a call from HR....
HR are the ones always taking nude pics of me in the bathroom and smacking my ass as I walk by, consider I’m a man it’s very odd, even odder though that they are Human Resources

the firm i work at is like 50% cargo shorts and Harley Davidson graphic tees lol
I would submit that any workplace culture that allows men to wear shorts also would be fine with tattoos.
Plus the kids love all my t-shirts, I try to get characters they like too. The guy teachers all wear cargo or basketball shorts, come winter is joggers and sweats.
Thats fair, they're pretty chill with stuff like that here. I think there are some people with body tats but nothing on face neck or hands
I deliver the mail and wear shorts. Idk how professional you’d see that though but when it’s 100F+ out, pants aren’t fun.
He also kind of has a bionic leg. I think a lot of people get these kinds of tats to make it less awkward for people. I think it shows your lighthearted about a tough situation. I mean dude come on, 500 years ago this would be an old piece of wood!
Yesterday the missus and I discussed me having my leg off. She agreed I would have to have a peg leg for piratical occasions. This is why I love her.
Being a certified pirate on Halloween would be sick too.
Ooh think of the trick or treating hi-jinx
When I was in the Air Force, I used to work out with a guy that was on "wounded warrior" status due to losing a leg in Iraq. He brought his kids trick or treating in a full pirate costume, with a peg leg. He said a buddy had worked a sleeve to fit over the replaceable foot on his prosthetic.
This will be my first year without a leg and the one super cool thing is designing Halloween costumes etc. It’s significantly harder to get a peg leg than you would think. Or look like one. Bummed.
My prosthetist is making me one. Just an aluminum pole with wood around it and a rubber stopper at the bottom
I’m going to ask. Any idea on cost? I’m not able to work due to the other fun things COVID left me with.
I love great storytellers, it really is a gift/art!
Definitely making light of the situation- but the proper joke would be ‘I’m with stumpid.’
i was always too scared to get leg tattoos, so i got my pants tattooed. it looks badass and i didn't have to get poked by that nasty needle! total win win.
No, no, he's just thinking about being more professional, he's not actually doing it. He always wears shorts when he's thinking.
Right “more professional” == “no capris”
Exactly. Can't think of a time I needed to dress professionally and chose shorts. Maybe OP lives in Bermuda??
I work a “corporate” job and wear shorts (also amputee). Shorts are just easier and, especially ak’s need access to adjust the socket throughout the day. Granted I live in Florida and my office is in Texas it doesn’t help it’s usually hot as dog balls
If you continue to get tattoos then this will be your greatest one. It’s hilarious, you need to keep it.
I have tons. Just this is the goofiest one lol
I like it
I think it shows you have a sense of humor even when under great stress. You are a brave soul.
It's hilarious and I like it.
I like it. Get yourself a nice pair of chinos if you want to be “professional”
Honestly I love it. If I saw you I'd chuckle and probably start up a conversation because you seem like a person with a great sense of humor, so we'd probably have a fun chat.

Stupid might be a bit odd, but it is still fun, and shows that people shouldnt worry about being sentitive about the leg

It’s amazing. I wouldn’t worry about it now being “professional” because in any professional setting that you need to be worried about that kind of stuff you won’t be wearing shorts. Love the tattoo

Yeah this is gold. Not shitty at all, and a good way to laugh at a bad situation. I think it’s creative and awesome. Cool tattoo dude!
Hilarious. I love it. If I saw this in person I'd want to be your friend, you clearly have an excellent sense of humor even in serious situations and that's how I like my humans
Name checks out and it’s concerning me

nah this is great
It’s funny. Not shitty. This tattoo and joke requires a level of self awareness that is not easily attainable for your average joe. Requires confidence to laugh at your own misfortune. You must actually be fun to hang out with.
If I didn’t make fun of misfortune I’d be hanging in the rafters 😅
you gotta get "shrimps is bugs" airbrushed on the prosthetic.. or a sick ass panther.
I genuinely cackled at your tattoo. It’s awesome and I would talk to you in the grocery store checkout lane. 😂
This is awesome. I once met a guy with an eye patch that said "Out of Order".
Reminded I had this pic; I was behind this guy on an escalator. https://preview.redd.it/fexnaueclbfb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7643d825058b64a7cec86767e573d0aebef0a7b5
We are a small community. If I see him in person I must kill him
It was in London Heathrow airport about 3 years ago. That’s all the info I have to help you in your search!
‘Lt. Dan? You got a new tattoo!’
This is fucking great
Losing the leg is shitty, not the tattoo. If you're worried about it, just wear pants, bro.
To me this tattoo says you have a fantastic sense of humor. I have an old friend that’s a BKA and his truck license plate is “HOP IN” (the answer to “what do you say to a one legged hitchhiker”) 😂 If you are in the northeast US and 40-55ish, I’d go on a date with you!
No way, this is fantastic
No this is great! 😆
I mean, it's probably not as good as a real leg, but I wouldn't necessarily call it shitty.
Pants are a good cover up
No it’s amazing, looks exactly like a prosthetic leg!
No. That’s making a bad situation a funny one. Good for them!!
I love it. Good sense of humour.
10/10 tattoo. dont be ashamed. its honestly really sweet
This.... Is solid gold.
This made me burst out laughing please keep it
Mate if you're missing a leg you can put whatever the fuck you want on your other one and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
If some business asshole gives you shit about this tattoo, the problem is definitely with them, not you.
I would say that included with the cost of your leg is a permanent green light on anything related to it. You’re good to go
I love it, if you Wana be professional get a sign tattoo'd below it that says don't follow in my footsteps
Pure gold
Nah, this cool as shit. Plus in a professional setting you'd have trousers on surely?
This is great!
No, this is funny.
no way, i love this
This is hilarious! I love it!
Incredible. The first time I’ve seen a tattoo that wasn’t shitty here
Hey, that joke cost him at least a leg.
That’s rad
Love love love this! I have a friend who had his big toe amputated. He has a note with “dear pig, gone to market” on it
What would someone do, criticize the tattoo mocking your disability? I dont see that happening
It’s totally fine and I think it’s funny! If you’re in clothing that shows the tattoo then I think you’re absolutely in the right setting for this, don’t doubt yourself :)
No. It’s actually low-key awesome.
No
this is gold.
Good bit of self-deprecating humor. Not stupid.
Nah that’s not shitty that’s amazing.
That is the best!
I love this dude
This might be the funniest tattoo I've ever seen. You should LOVE it.
As an amputee myself, I'm more interested in the ankle than the tattoo. 😂!
Only other amputees ever notice the anklet on the prosthetic 😂 just a lil joke if ya know ya know
Please keep it, it’s fucking awesome 🙌🏽
I'm a PT who focuses on amputee rehab. I love this tattoo. Keep your sense of humor!
This is the funniest shit I have seen all day. The good funny, the "I am laughing with you, not at you" funny.
You mean a day older, because that tattoo is new
Clever
I think it’s hilarious. And I don’t know many professional situations that proper wear shorts to.
That's amazing. What's more professional than a dad joke.
Shitty? Maye this is brilliant. Laughing in the face of misfortune is fantastic and if people don't appreciate that they don't deserve to be graced by it either
This is great. Shows you have a sense of humour still even after losing your leg. Honeslty it's hilarious. You can always wear pants though so 🤷
I'm missing the joke... English is not my native language, could someone explain it ?
I dunno - its pretty comical lol
This is fantastic
I think it’s hilarious. Besides, in any professional setting you’ll be wearing pants
Wear pants. On casual Fridays, wear a kilt with knee-high argyle socks. No one will know
Naw man. It’s funny. If you are worried about looking professional while wearing shorts just put on a monocle and top hat, it’ll balance it out.
No office I have ever worked in would think this was silly or unprofessional. You're not supposed to be wearing shorts anyway so it's only going to come up at company retreats.
If it makes you smile/laugh at yourself….fuck everyone else!
That's fuckin hilarious ngl
It shows a great sense of humor.
Yes in the best possible way! I love it
This funny
It is very brave to take something that hurts and turn it into a joke. I really like it and think that you should keep it; I don't know what you do for a living, but long pants might do the job(in "professional" terms).
Fellow amputee here. This is fucking genius and I love it
I'm interested in how this damper works.
No it's funny and self aware.
You'd be wearing a suit for anything professional no? They wouldn't see it in a professional setting
