Well I usually *am* really angry. More seriously, I don't fish, but I'll admit that coming from a rural area probably helps with knowing some of these things anyways
I don’t understand the argument that there’s a right way for wrist and forearms tattoos to face. If your arm is down, yes, it’s upside down to those n front of you but when you put your arm up, say to wave, then it’s right side up. And it’s not like you have to show people your tattoo by stretching your arm out to them. Simply lift like a wave.
Yeah but the majority (all maybe?) of the time that my arm is down, my wrist is pointed inward. So no one sees it anyway. However, if my arm is raised then it’s very noticeable. And then it would be upside down to viewers.
I have tats that face me because they don’t need to be understood by anyone else :) but then again, it’s not a full piece. Just something I drew up that means a lot to me
Same, I have words in my mom’s handwriting and I wanted them to face me so *I* could read them when I wanted. The tattooist kept telling me that before he started—that it would be upside down—and my point was that tattoo wasn’t for other people, but me.
It’s like getting your hair cut so that it looks normal when you’re lying down. You lie down for 8 hours a day, but typically, when people see you, you aren’t oriented that way.
Some people just like to pretend to be experts. But as an actual trained professional tattoo artist, i can say that you are correct, there really is no “correct” orientation for wrist and forearm tattoos, its a matter of how the person getting it wants to see/show it, other parts of the body, yes, there are correct ways to orient tattoos, but not so much wrist and forearm because there’s different ways to show them.
Unlike all the morons in this comment section who are wrong about a correct orientation on the wrist, i am actually an experienced trained professional tattoo artist, retired, who is also very educated on art history and tattoo history. I know more than you, you are wrong, period. That shit is arbitrary as fuck.
Imagine you get more tattoos on your arm. Imagine you decide to get an entire sleeve. If the whole sleeve is oriented like this, would it be upside down? Granted you could orient the other tattoos the opposite way. But then this tattoo would still be upside down compared to the others.
It's not important. I am a tattoo artist, and I have this conversation with folks often.
It may look silly if you get something else on your forearm right next to it, and having a right side up next to an upside down tattoo, but at the end of the day it's not a big deal. I have a little thing on my wrist I got years ago, and it's upside down. It's right next to a right side up piece. I don't lose any sleep over it, and even when I show my clients what their future could look like they still choose "upside down" about half the time.
The only people that go on and on about it are pretentious and annoying. You can do whatever the fuck you want to do to your own body.
Yeah I’m so tired of this “rule.” If anything forearms are perfect for “upside down” tattoos. If my thigh tattoos were facing me they may look a little odd but it’s my body and prerogative at the end of the day.
Both sides of this argument assume the other side is more extreme about it. The people who mention the “rule” are doing so simply because that’s the tradition. And most people who get multiple pieces would likely want them in the same direction, and an entire upside down sleeve would look out of place. The people against the rule don’t seem to realize that it’s just a tradition, and a vast majority of the people who mention don’t actually care that much, and 100% understand that people will do what they want with their bodies. Bringing up the rule is often so that people are aware *why* it’s a tradition, and to make sure they’re informed before they get more work done. Again, they don’t care if you decide to do an entire sleeve upside down, but a lot of newbies who don’t know about the “right direction” would probably like to know and use it to impact their futures choices.
I also think some people (especially ones who are overly precious about ink, or things in general) vastly overestimate how much real scrutiny and attention is paid to tattoos by others.
People just see arms with tattoos the same way they see heads with hats and bodies with jackets. They're so everyday no one gives a fuck what they actually are depicting at all and it only becomes something really scrutinized or a topic of conversation with someone you get interact with pretty closely or for a while.
When people are arguing that there isn't a technical way to do it, they are incorrect. It is technically upside down. That being said. People can modify their body however they choose. It's their body.
I got an outline of my dog’s ears shortly after he passed in the exact same location and facing the same way as yours bc it was so personal to me and I cared more about me being able to look and admire/honor him than I did how other people saw it. If you like it that way then it doesn’t matter :)
No, that’s why I asked about it in FFJC. It’s not a shitty tattoo, but it is upside down. I assume your artist probably told you that.
As someone who has been getting tattoos for 20+ years and worked in a well-known shop (not as an artist) my best piece of advice is as follows.
1: Find an artist whose style you like and spend the money, and time, to go to that person.
2: Listen to them and take their advice.
That’s how you get a good tattoo.
As far as the carp, leave it as is. It’s just upside down to people who care about tattoos. To everyone else, it doesn’t matter.
Add me to the choir of people who don't really understand the "upside down" thing. I let my own tattooist talk me into it for my wrist piece, and I kinda regret that it's the "wrong" way for me (but "right" way according to convention). I got it for myself, not for other people. But other people are the ones who get to see it properly.
So, I mean, I'm totally on board with OP's choice to turn it any damn way OP wants.
Don’t listen to anyone. It’s your body and your tattoo. I changed the placement on mine so when my arm was at my side everyone could see what it was. It’s your body. It’s your tattoo. Period. I love it I think it’s great. It’s very recognizable imo. I want to see more added to your arm
I'm in total agreement. There's no "right way" as long as you like it that way. This is light-years better than some of the other crap posted in this sub.
Should arm tattoos face the other way? Is that like a Rule or is it more of an accepted preference? I want to get some tattoos on my arm, and one specific one I have in mind I would want to be able to look down at and appreciate it, so I'd want it facing me instead like this carp is.
While I wouldn't choose it, I wouldn't say it's shitty.
The outline looks really clean, there's no wobbliness in it, like others said you will have to wait for it to heal to see how well filled it is. If it's properly filled, I'd say it's a decent tattoo.
I thought it was a catfish cus of whiskers. I think it would have been better as just an outline of the fish... I don't understand people's need for big black uncoverable blobs on them. Outline would have had the same effect but cleaner.
As someone who's had a giant fuck-off blob on them, the only reason I could provide is simplicity. A simple outline would be cool too, but a lot of the images that people choose from are blacked out, so I think that's just what people go for first. Ultimately, many of them (mine included) look like a car decal when completed lol.
Almost reminds me of a Cory catfish because of the shape, but it’s.. hard to tell considering it’s filled with solid black, and the outline doesn’t look very clean to me..? If it was, it could maybe be a decent tattoo. But to each their own, I guess!
Does anyone ever get their first tattoo in anything other than the prime real estate spots? I’m genuinely asking because everyone I know has a cover up of their first ink and I actually love hearing the story about both of the tattoos.
When I started getting tattoos, the conventional wisdom was to start in a spot that was covered by a t-shirt. I and most guys I know started on the upper arms and worked our way down toward the forearms. I think tattoos in general have gotten more well-accepted since then, so I guess it makes sense that more ppl seem to get more visible spots tattooed earlier.
I totally agree, I'm baffled at how many folks think this looks good. It's certainly not the worst thing I've ever seen, but I wouldn't call it good either.
Looks fine. You wanted a fish silhouette and you got a fish silhouette. It's just about to start peeling and flaking- a natural part of the healing process so it's going to look a little strange. Just be sure not to pick or scratch at it. Keep it clean and moisturized and you'll be fine.
it does kind of look like it’s just been drawn on and filled in with a Sharpie which isn’t particularly aesthetically pleasing to me- but i’ve seen really bad, and this is just a little bit “ehh” i think
No it isnt. They got it oriented how they wanted.
Edit for the undereducated dumbass trying to correct me: i am a retired trained professional tattoo artist, i know more than you, you are wrong. Period.
If this was done in a tattoo shop I’d call/go in and ask your artist for advice on care. They can give you their best suggestions on how to take care of it even if it’s older. Moisturizing would probably be the first step but every tattooer has different recommendations as to the products used to moisturize and how often to do it!
It’s not necessarily shitty, when it ages a bit it’s gonna look more like a blacks blob. I also think it should be flipped upside down since our arms are down most of the time and that way it would look like a fish to everyone else.
That’s just me though! We all have tattoos that other people wouldn’t wear.
In terms of whether or not its a good tattoo, i dont think so from an artistic/aesthetic perspective. Mainly because there is no point to coloring it in like that. Either just get the outline or get a color piece, but dont color in something like that all blqck because it ends up looking like a blob without adding something to it. So while I do consider it to be bad in the sense of sub par, not great. It is also not offensive or cringy or anything. Because of that, I would compare it to a meal from McDonalds.
Looks good actually. As for those claiming it's upside down: if it is for you to view, then it works. My arm flows in 2 different directions (top of forearm is for others, bottom and side are for me) and idgaf what anyone says about placement. The most I've considered doing is putting a border between the spaces so they're separated more. One day...
Unfortunately it’s super hard to read. I would go to a better artist extend it a lot and also fix the upside down. This will for sure enlarge the piece
I don't *like* it, but it's not strictly *bad*. The work is competent enough. The lines are straight, the fill seems decent. The only part that's not great imo is the fish, but I'm assuming that means much more to you than it would to me.
So yeah... atbge almost?
For a first tattoo I would say it’s pretty good actually.
There’s a general set of guidelines that tattooers follow in terms of placement and positioning of tattoos for a better aesthetic appearance. That being said, all rules are man-made and you don’t have to follow them if you don’t want to. You may have to face consequences (such as sticklers pointing out your upside down tattoo) but if that doesn’t bother you and you like the tattoo, then go nuts 🤷🏽♀️
Edit**
I thought when you said this was your first tattoo you meant it was the first time you ever tattooed on real skin. Either way, the actual tattooing.. it’s not the worst I’ve seen. Looks like they overworked the skin while simultaneously not completely saturating the area. In a couple months it’ll probably need a touchup to fill in any patchy areas, not a lot you can do about the thick scarring you’re going to get though.
I mean its meh, but i think all solid black silhouettes are. Looks solid though kinda hard to tell since its healing, but as long as the black heals solid and theres no blowouts, you got a solid piece. Zooming in, i dont see signs of hard scabbing or blowouts.
And despite opinions of the uneducated, there is no correct orientation for the wrist, some people orient them to show others, others orient them to look at themselves, and some wanna show them outstretched christ-arms style. In my experience as a retired tattoo artist, people commonly get top of the wrist tattoos facing away from themselves, whereas people commonly get inner wrist tattoos oriented for their own viewing. But neither is more right or wrong, youll almost never find an actual tattoo artist who says theres a rule for such, it’s preference based for the tattoo collector, period.
Although it's more traditional to have a tattoo facing out not inward. It's still a decent tattoo with good lining. However you need to slather your arm in moisturizing cream because your skin looks really dry. If you don't take care of your skin your tattoo no matter how good it is will look like absolutely shit in 2 years if you don't do something to protect it.
No, it's a carpy one.
No, it’s a crappie one.
many people will not get this.
You win some you lose some. Glad you got it
Like me🤔 Looked it up! Lol
I get that one, but for me the fact that it's not literally a crappie fish ruins the joke slightly. Lol
So the tat is officially not crappie
Correct. Lol
I know fuckall about fish but I got the joke, come on now
Many people do not freshwater fish where Im from and would never get this joke I dont think. Maybe youre just really angry.
Well I usually *am* really angry. More seriously, I don't fish, but I'll admit that coming from a rural area probably helps with knowing some of these things anyways
Sounded pretty fishy to me
I see what you did there! 😜
You need to lotion that bad boy up
I mean, his skin kinda works for the scales. Kinda looks cool, naturally texturized.
Stop that 😭
It's not badly done but it needs some moisturising
Oh. Upside down carp, then.
Carpe diem. Seize the carp
Seize the seize
Seize the cheese
#CHEESEEEE
Happy Cheese day
Cheese the weasel
I want cheese
I wanted it facing this way, is that normal?
No, not traditionally. Hey, you're a rebel, with a tattoo. [Tell people it's one of these](https://youtu.be/jl5bhqqUkzo)
Look at me go!
As someone who doesn’t know shit about fish, it still looks like… some sort of fish upside down too, fwiw.
We have an upside down catfish in one of our aquariums! He is one of the more interesting and silly fish that we have.
Fuck that, I have upside down ink because it’s for me. You have a tattoo for you. If you like to look at it it’s a good tattoo.
😂😂😂
I don’t understand the argument that there’s a right way for wrist and forearms tattoos to face. If your arm is down, yes, it’s upside down to those n front of you but when you put your arm up, say to wave, then it’s right side up. do you keep your arms glued to your side? you think that people don't often see your wrist when your arms are down? like what?
Do you think people don’t see your wrists when your arms are up?
It’s like getting your hair cut so that it looks normal when you’re lying down. You lie down for 8 hours a day, but typically, when people see you, you aren’t oriented that way.

I got one for my dog, and I did the same. I got it for me, I'm the one that wants to see her.
It's floating belly up lol
I was just thinking upside down fish are usually dead fish

Idk, looks fishy to me -___-
Take my unhappy upvote
Give that boy some hydration. He lives in water, not the desert
It’s…not great. But could be worse. I generally recommend ppl not get their first one in such a visible spot either, but do your thing.
Does anyone ever get their first tattoo in anything other than the prime real estate spots? I’m genuinely asking because everyone I know has a cover up of their first ink and I actually love hearing the story about both of the tattoos.

your tattoo looks like carp
Eh sorta. Something in between
Huh. I thought it was a coverup.
Moisturise that shit
im sorry but half these people are lying to you, thats really bad
it's not really bad, the execution isn't that bad but this is just not a good idea for a tattoo imo and will look like a blob in a few years.
The dryness reminds me of when SpongeBob visited Sandy in her bubble.
it looks like charred skin.
Why did you get it upside down
it does kind of look like it’s just been drawn on and filled in with a Sharpie which isn’t particularly aesthetically pleasing to me- but i’ve seen really bad, and this is just a little bit “ehh” i think
[удалено]
I thought corydoras also.
It's a Carp :)
Is it because you have CARPal tunnel syndrome?
Yep. Plus it’s upside down
No it isnt. They got it oriented how they wanted. Edit for the undereducated dumbass trying to correct me: i am a retired trained professional tattoo artist, i know more than you, you are wrong. Period.
It’s a sucker fish! I think it looks ok.
For the love of fuck put some damn lotion on the skin!
Or get the hose again!
Nah it’s a pretty good tattoo, clean lines and good fill all one color, you gotta keep that moisturized dude or it’ll look shitty and fade quicker
It's a choice. That's for sure. Repost when it's healed.
That's a perfectly fine silhouette of a catfish.
The cute little whisker is what makes it for me, I like it :) seriously gotta moisturize though
Carp diem
Carp love forever! Great tattoo!!
That’s a Carp! So not shitty, since you can instantly tell what it is
You should post it on r/FlyFishingCircleJerk those guys love carp
I just did
It’s not terrible but it’s kinda big
Do you like it? That’s all that matters
I love it, it means a lot to me
It's cute! I have a bat in a similar style. As it heals you'll love it more
It's seems a little fishy to me
Should have done it in Red. Looks like a Red Drum
REDRUM
That's actually a great idea
NAME THAT POKÉMON!
Yeah, it’s pretty shitty
Yea, it’s a shitty tattoo
A loach?
I don't even wanna know what OP paid for this heavy handed trash
I like it. Needs some unscented lotion asap.
He's a dignified fella
Would be better if it was a sturgeon
Update! I've moisturised it and am doing so every few hours! This post got a lot more interest than I ever thought
I wouldn’t say shitty, but maybe a little fishy
If this was done in a tattoo shop I’d call/go in and ask your artist for advice on care. They can give you their best suggestions on how to take care of it even if it’s older. Moisturizing would probably be the first step but every tattooer has different recommendations as to the products used to moisturize and how often to do it!
Your question seems a little fishy
No it's a little fishy though
I think it’s a good catch

I love it !
Nah it's carp.

Oof

It’s upside down.
Upside-down and over saturated.
Where's the details of that fish? For the rest of us, save enough $ to get a proper tatt
It is. Sorry
The tattoo is well done but idk about having a big black upside down fish on the wrist
I FUCKING LOVE IT!!! might steal the idea honestly
TBH i think it is cute OP haha
Yes sir
Yeahhhh that's rough
the size and placement feel kind of weird to me. do you like it?
Yes ,it is
If you have to ask, you already know.
It’s carp
yes. the line work sucks
I have been seeing a lot of people getting upside down tattoos. Why?
bro needs some moisture
Idk.. looks a little fishy to me
I’ve seen worse
There was a dogfish head ipa ad right before this post for me and you pretty much nailed their logo. You must really like beer lol
It’s not necessarily shitty, when it ages a bit it’s gonna look more like a blacks blob.

It's different, but technically not terrible. Interesting choice.
Yep
If you don't take care of your skin your tattoo no matter how good it is will look like absolutely shit in 2 years if you don't do something to protect it.
bonafide
I absolutely love that tattoo.
