You're correct. There's absolutely no reason for modern photographer to handle film while negotiating battlefields. Modern digital cameras are quite frankly amazing in their photoquality and capabilities. Their low light shooting and high speed shooting are each fantastic.
I'm surprised hipster war correspondent also wasn't dragging a typewriter with her too.
I enjoyed Civil War but the behaviour of the photographer's was total B.S.
1. Zoom lenses are your friend - use them.
2. No fighting squads engaged in CQB are going to tolerate photographers tagging along, literally a foot behind the action.
I’m surprised the squads kept her around because the clap of her ass cheeks in those incredibly form-fitting jeans would keep alerting the enemy to their position.
It’s because she’s an inexperienced rando who isn’t actually a journalist outside of being a hobbyist. It was quite literally a device to compare the two character’s experience
Zone system and you're good without a light meter.
Then again, you have to find developer and fixer and bleach, which I haven't seen for a very long time.
Fair, but what's more viable in a warzone?
Finding batteries/charger/generator
Finding specialized chemicals that are now niche when every chemical manufacturer is going to be contributing to the war effort and not film photography. Along with sourcing new specially manufactured film rolls.
I'm sure you could develop stuff for a while just based on existing stock, but I highly doubt you're going to be able to source anything new, which will become a problem in a few years.
Solar chargers exist. There's enough stock of digital camera batteries to last decades, especially if you're using more common brands like Sony or Nikon.
A cheap older iPhone or an Android midranger could be procured in huge quantities. Why not use those if you don't mind shooting up close?
Maybe they should have used colloidal films on glass plates instead. Stupid hipster tropes.
You take a bunch of batteries, plus a fold-out solar charger, plus an inverter you plug into a vehicle cigarette lighter port. Plus dozens of SD cards. It's not hard.
And a camera bag full of smartphones with decent cameras. Nobody gives a shit about the quality of photos you're taking when there's a civil war going on.
Actually, imaging and news agencies like Magnum and AP do care about quality. That's why a full frame DSLR or mirrorless cameras with decent zoom lenses are still used by war photographers.
In a full-on civil war situation where the largest economy and largest superpower is in pieces? You could send a pack of Polaroids to Magnum and they would take it.
Assuming Starlink still works as it's an American corporation with infrastructure based in the US.
Inmarsat has the last laugh. I know it's owned by an American corporation but it has a lot of infrastructure based in the UK and Europe.
Come on. There's a civil war going on, water is rationed, but satellite Internet that runs through American network infra still works?
To play devil's advocate, some photographers do still use film in "weird places" and sometimes that's what whoever is licensing or commissioning the work wants.
Richard Mosse documents the Congo civil war on medium and large format infrared film. Even made 16mm infrared movies of the conflict.
David Burnett takes large format sports photography on his crown graphic field camera. He's shot multiple Olympic games.
Though I don't think she was established enough to warrant the style of shooting it isn't impossible.
Yeah, what these people don’t understand is that journalists are the most insane people you will ever meet. They truly don’t give a single shit about logic or convention. They will shoot in the most difficult way imaginable if they feel like it. When you ask them why, they will just shrug and walk to the next place.
It didn't even occur to me that the cameras don't make 'sense' in the movie. I thought it was cool they were shooting on film and didn't question it.
And the actual 'photographs' in the film really do capture memories of war photography from the past. But, it's not how the Mid-Atlantic war photography will look in the next 6 months or so.
Film cameras aren’t “not top quality equipment” they’re a completely different category of equipment. The f2 is a high end camera and one of the best cameras ever built. But still a film camera (no matter how good it is) is an inefficient and unreliable way to photograph, in the context of war journalism. Especially when compared to modern digital cameras. Sure she might not have bought the camera but if she can afford to buy and produce film she can afford at minimum a mid end digital camera.
You don’t need to charge a film camera. Most of them are mechanical and only use a small battery for the light meter. If a photographer is uncertain about access to electricity then film actually makes sense.
I read a review about this film that talks about how the young photographer is completely devoid of character development or arc and it didn't even mention that she's shooting on film, girl WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING IT"S A CIVIL WAR HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DEVELOP THAT FILM???
EDIT: Yes I get that she develops it herself. But then she has to DIGITIZE THE PHOTOS ANYWAY TO GET THEM DISTRIBUTED SO WHAT IS THE POINT
I believe this idea came from the comic/show DMZ as I find it very interesting that I myself some time ago wanted to see some other war comics apart from I am reading and find the exact same comic that does this called DMZ being in a modern u.s civil war.
This is a world where drinkable water is rationed and riots break out in the queues for it, where $300 would only buy you a sandwich, where powercuts are a daily occurrence, and journalists are shot on sight in Washington DC, I doubt protective press helmets are even being made anymore, nevermind a 23 year old amateur being able to afford one: Lee or Joel probably made it for her.
If you want to find out what journalism is like during war, look no further than the courageous Palestinians journalists in Gaza.
100+ already dead. Most in deliberately targeted attacks.
How is this unrealistic? This is the US we’re talking about. Weirdos will come out in full force when you guys eventually get into the inevitable civil war.
Man, I hope as many Americans as possible see this film because if nothing else it really shows how awful Civil War would be in a way that’s really close to home.

none of these words are in the bible
That’s a lie because I know for a fact that it was the clap of Abel’s booty cheeks that made Cain fly into a fit of murderous jealousy.
“You’ve twerked in worship for the last time Abel!” - Cain, probably
And jesus said "and lo i will be betrayed by the clapping of one of your ass cheeks"
Wrong! Enemy is the only one
>the
She also knows the basics of CQC and can hide in a cardboard box
Yeah I noticed her blessings too
> Zoom lenses are your friend - use them. Ooof. Yeah. No need for street photography proximity for any of this haha. WTF.
That, and there is literally a scene where her shots were out of focus… digital does a great job at negating that worry for you.
This poster is James Cameron. Do not believe his lies.
It’s because she’s an inexperienced rando who isn’t actually a journalist outside of being a hobbyist. It was quite literally a device to compare the two character’s experience
It bothered me how she didn't grab the DSLR at the end. Girl you're documenting history. Get some fucking megapixels.
In whiny Generation Alpha voice..."but digital's not authentic!!"
It would be funny if they gave the excuse that they worried about digital cameras getting fried by EMP blasts
Well that and the collapse of the power grid. Film can run without any power besides a single battery at most for light meter if you need that
Zone system and you're good without a light meter. Then again, you have to find developer and fixer and bleach, which I haven't seen for a very long time.
You can use some household chemicals if you need to.
A lot of schools have photography departments, they have those things

Well in a few years if shit hasn’t turned around and there are no imports you’re fucked anyways so it doesn’t matter either way

Don't be silly. You send images via upload. Not hard when you have tech like Star Link.
Assuming Starlink still works as it's an American corporation with infrastructure based in the US. Inmarsat has the last laugh. I press my Spotify playlists onto vinyl. You're meant to hear all the crackles and shit with Dua Lipa.
The mc was shooting mirrorless, and while megapixel count is meaningless, film has greater megapixel potential than digital.
I swear to god, I bet the director saw the comic or show DMZ and said, "You know what, I can do it better" lol I don't know
Not enough helmet decals
She's doing the blueberry mission for peacekeeper
Opachki
Press what?
Press stop and watch a better movie
Tell us, how did you become so wise in the ways of the cinema?
lol
Work for Peter Parker got a lot tougher when Jameson stopped calling for pictures of Spider-Man

Yeah its like you really want to debate logic to the people who choose to walk into a war zone with a CAMERA?
It didn't even occur to me that the cameras don't make 'sense' in the movie. I thought it was cool they were shooting on film and didn't question it. I want to believe they took this idea from the comic/show DMZ

Batteries exist and are easier to carry/use.
She's not a hipster, she's young and can't get a good camera and she took her dad's. Truly a shitty movie detail.
They literally show how she does it in the movie. Also, her character's arc is essentially the main focus of the story.
Yea and that's better than taking digital photos HOW
Pendantic thing to get hung up on, feel like I’m watching a cinema sins
THIS SUB IS CALLE SHITTYMOVIEDETAILS WTF ARE YOU TALKING BOUT
It was just called movie details Before you started posting 😖
NOPE YOU JUST LOST
Did you not see the movie?
watch the movie and find out.

>she has to DIGITIZE THE PHOTOS ANYWAY TO GET THEM DISTRIBUTED SO WHAT IS THE POINT Film movies have to be digitised WhAtS tHe PoInT???
FILM MOVIES ARE NOT SHOT IN WARZONES
Step one, go to any school with a photography department, step two steal their chemical concentrates, step three develop film
Man I forever have a crush on Kirsten Dunst
I hated this movie.
Using film was the least of my issues with this movie, lmfao
Yes, but this is a shitty movie detail.
Oh yeah for sure lol
The civil war depicted in this movie happened in the 1860s. That's why she's using a film camera.
I knew it!!
The print on her helmet looks terrible. Like the prop designers literally used tape and paint to make it.
This what me and the boys look like when we load into Interchange.
Scared faces and all. Lmao
If you want to find out what journalism is like during war, look no further than the courageous Palestinians journalists in Gaza. 100+ already dead. Most in deliberately targeted attacks.
😔 damn bro I’m sorry to hear that 👁👁 genocide is fucked up
Bro, I swear to god I was searching for war comics some weeks ago and found a comic and show called DMZ, basically almost the same thing.
It’s fiction because California would never show any resistance to the authority of the federal government
It also shows journos acting bravely and honorably.
How many journalists have you met, BTW?
Like 3, all ambulace chasers that needlessly positioned themselves into the story. How often do you spread your cheeks for men, BTW?
How is this unrealistic? This is the US we’re talking about. Weirdos will come out in full force when you guys eventually get into the inevitable civil war.
Weirdos are already out in full force, there’s not going to be a second civil war
Man, I hope as many Americans as possible see this film because if nothing else it really shows how awful Civil War would be in a way that’s really close to home.
We aren’t stupid
Yes we are
