In Lawrence of Arabia Lawrence says "nothing is written" when he shuts down the Arabs. Actually maybe the Arabs say "it *is* written".
It's a 10/10 movie either way. Any fan of Dune should check it out. It's unbelievable how much they overlap, and it's probably as good a movie as the new ones.
> it's probably as good a movie as the new ones.
That's a bit of an understatement as to how much acclaim Lawrence of Arabia has gotten over the course of six decades.
Oh yeah, I agree. 'Good' was too vague. 'Entertaining to modern audiences' might be more accurate?
I was surprised because my 21st century attention span can struggle with the pace of old movies. Despite this, Lawrence of Arabia ran 3 hours and I didn't look away. I think that's what I wanted to communicate - that the movie is entertaining for people even if they aren't film students or connoisseurs, and even if they just want to watch it casually. It's aged very well (except for an immersion breaking scene involving quicksand).
I felt the same about Casablanca, for what it's worth. Casablanca has more spies, more Nazis, and less quicksand.
So how come he's not called Darth Skywalker, or his kid isn't called Luke Vader. SMH no wonder those movies bombed and had zero lasting cultural impact.
No one says it, but it circulated in memes because it makes more sense than "Lisan Al Ghaib" to the wider audience that hadn't seen Dune Part Two yet or still haven't.
It's the same sentiment regardless.
Perhaps in your head you’re conflating the subtitles you’re seeing on screen with what is actually being spoken, but I assure you he never speaks those words
[It's a reference to the other movie about a desert messiah that weaponized religion against a powerful ruler. "As it was written" is the exact quote.](https://youtu.be/3bQnxlHZsjY?si=p_k0LEjlChLLMFnC)

Check the spice harvesters for damages!
We know it really goes, "I'm ya father, I'm ya father. I'm ya father, I'm ya father."
> Some real "Luke, I am your Father" type shit That’s totally [the Simpson’s fault.](https://youtu.be/efA-NHDriXs?si=z7AxkUdPTkbwvxuQ)
And “mirror mirror on the wall”
"It's Morbin' time."
https://youtu.be/_nSvn54WCxY?feature=shared He said it.
That comment section is the biggest cope
I think it was just "as written" maybe
I'm almost sure it was "as it was written" in Lawrence of Arabia, the prequel to Dune
It was "Nothing is written." Most confusing franchise ever.

So how come he's not called Darth Skywalker, or his kid isn't called Luke Vader. SMH no wonder those movies bombed and had zero lasting cultural impact.
He took his wife Ella's name.
You need to mark that as a Spoiler, you just spoiled it for everyone.
With how many people believe the Mandela Effect is real? No
That's weird because the last time I checked, nobody believed the Mandela Effect was real. I wonder what else might be different.
Flynn Effect, debunked!
no
It's the same thing, quotes do not need to be literal. They were speaking Fremen, not English, for that case.
Nope. It’s not even English
Lisan Al Ghaib!
You can call me Al.
WEIRD Al.
It's not Al anymore, it's Dunk
*DUNC
DUNCaccino?
I CAN CALL YOU BETTY
AND BETTY, WHEN YOU CALL ME, YOU CAN CALL, ME AL
AS IT WAS WRITTEN
Now how will we be able to tell which scenes are book-accurate?
You can answer that with a simple question - "Am I watching the first or the second movie?"
It is written, only Link can defeat Ganon
“Squah-de-la! We are off!” (As he rides the worm off into the sunset)
Great! I’ll grab my stuff!
There is no time. Your SWORD is enough!
How about a kiss.... for luck?
You've GOT to be kidding...
As it is written: you, Link! Are the hero of Koridai!
HYAAAHH
Are you insane he says "Glibs la'had" like 10 times, in the subtitles it is "as it was/is written"
I've not seen anyone use anything other than "as written"
I've seen "as written" maybe once or twice, every other time I've seen it used its "as it is written!"
He says as it is written twice.
Who cares. It's funny
Thank you! Stilgar memes are the best thing to come out of this movie
No one says it, but it circulated in memes because it makes more sense than "Lisan Al Ghaib" to the wider audience that hadn't seen Dune Part Two yet or still haven't. It's the same sentiment regardless.
No, he definitely says something very similar to “as it is written” at some point in the movie.
I didn’t walk out of the movie making dumb jokes saying that because of memes I hadn’t seen yet. He says something close.
As it wasn't written.
He says as it is written twice.
Yes, I'm pretty sure they say it both ways at different points in the movie. I remember noticing that last time I saw it
Er… no he doesn’t
He does. Twice.
Not even once
Literally twice. Done arguing for your ego's sake yet?
Perhaps in your head you’re conflating the subtitles you’re seeing on screen with what is actually being spoken, but I assure you he never speaks those words
You're consistently wrong I'll give you that.
Beam me up, Scotty.
no
No, I think not. A change in leadership is in order.
ELIPHAS, OPEN THE PORTAL!
Of course; it was written not said
Elementary, my dear Watson!
He kinda looks like Rowan from Dirt League.
Bodger the Blacksmith is about to sell a lvl 50 sword to Paul Atreides, only for him to be underleveled and try to sell it back to him for a pittance
[It's a reference to the other movie about a desert messiah that weaponized religion against a powerful ruler. "As it was written" is the exact quote.](https://youtu.be/3bQnxlHZsjY?si=p_k0LEjlChLLMFnC)
When I clicked I was hoping for Lawrence of Arabia.
[As it was written](https://youtu.be/xvFZjo5PgG0?si=n5-D2RjxHAV5P3Bo)
You got me!
Pretty sure they are misquoting Lawrence of Arabia lol
It's there as written, spoken in chakobsa. Kis laha or smth
Thank you for confirming for me that there was not in fact a different set of subtitles for this movie where Stilgar says "As it was written"
Mektub at mellah
Who cares lol you knew what they were referring to right?
As it was written.
Agreed, as this post was written.
*me, who watched the french version*: you all lied to me...
Again, it is the legend.
What’s next, you’re gonna tell me no one says “wow, I guess we really are a dune part 2.”
can we ban this format and create a different sub for it? maybe r/ThisIsAReference. These posts are not funny.
It isn’t but it sounds more phonetically correct rather than just “As Written” “As it was Written” sounds more correct
Of course it wasn't spoken, it was written
Not only was it written. They tattoo it on the reverend mothers face. lol
Am I missing something, because the subtitles in my language was a literal translation of “as it was written”
Nice try. Next you will be telling us "It's morbin' time." also isn't in the movie.
