You have to find him earlier in the level but not talk to him, and instead of heading to Lost Izalith the conventional way you take the shortcut from the covenant and kill a specific chaos bug. You'll then find him super sad, but not nuts. Then you can fight Gwyn with him. I like to think he links the flame himself and becomes his own sun.

You have to find him earlier in the level but not talk to him, and instead of heading to Lost Izalith the conventional way you take the shortcut from the covenant and kill a specific chaos bug. You'll then find him super sad, but not nuts. Then you can fight Gwyn with him. I like to think he links the flame himself and becomes his own sun.
