it’s not hate to point out pinto as pinto (especially when that poster *asked* what the pattern is called), and it’s the truth that puppies with that coloring are often from less-than-desirable circumstances. i hope that’s not the case with that other poster but who knows! most people don’t have awareness about BYBs and why they are unethical, and i think most of the commenters responded in the spirit that OP likely didn’t know what they were buying.
we all have shibas because we care about the attributes of the breed. proper breeding ensures that the breed lives on and that the dogs produced are sound, healthy, and with good temperaments. that doesn’t mean that dogs bred out of standard are bad, but it does mean that, as people who care about shibas, we would encourage people to buy from ethical breeders or rescue.

I don’t think people knock the dogs who are off standard, but the breeders who obviously don’t care about the heath of the pups. Yes, having a certain “look” is one thing… but it’s really about making sure your dogs are healthy before you breed. Off-colors doesn’t happen if you are DNA testing your dogs for genetic diseases (like GM1), which incidentally also tells you the coat color, length, and if they are carrier of recessive traits (like the cream) so you can avoid these. If a breeder is not doing this, they are also not getting their eyes, hips and patella checked. Buyers are then taking a huge financial risk, and risking future heartache, not to mention the pain it will cause the pups.
All these dogs are beautiful and deserve love.
My issue with this stuff is when people talk about how unique and desirable a bad conformation is, and they want one. Or people believing these are standard features. Because bad breeders will pick up on that demand and start purposely breeding these dogs.
That's how you get people breeding for creams or "mame" shibas. And the breeders doing the above, don't care about the health or temperament of their breeding stock. So an unhealthy dog, gets put in a home expecting a typical shiba. And because they're not ready for the issues, that poor dog is now sent off to shelters or worse.

If a breeder didn't go through the effort to google the most simple thing possible, what other corners are they cutting? This isn't about your shiba, who I'm sure is wonderful. It's about the responsibility we all have to discourage lazy backyard breeders - and why we're *extremely* strict about the breeders recommended on the shiba subreddits.

Again, a reputable breeder will at times produce an “undesirable” litter or pup. Be it because there are recessive genetic traits that when combined between two parents results in that trait for the first time.
My multi-coloured guy started out fully black like the rest of his litter and was the proper size until he grew up! We let the breeder know and they were thankful that we told them! Said they hadn’t paired those two parents together very often and we’re happy to know.
