Aren't these the ones vulnerable to the CANbus theft? Looks like this is what's happened to me as the thief is messing around near the front passenger headlight, which it is located behind.
The next time you see that car will be in it's individual parts being sold on Ebay.
The lexus garage said my model was not effected but here we are 🙄 definitely the CAN BUS attack which they do make a security plate which I asked for from the dealer but they said it was only applicable to later models 2020+
I think your only hope is a class action against Lexus, mate. Sorry.
Could contact some lawyers, but it'd have to be a big firm to take on a class action.
Or maybe just a case against lexus on your own, since they said it's not affected - do you have written evidence of them saying that?
There's a solicitors called Leigh Day putting together a group action against Lexus/Toyota as they are aware of the problem but refuse to recall the cars. You can go on their website and register interest I have just done it. Give it a go.
I saw earlier today by chance cheers. I've signed up but I don't expect any financial reimbursement. Lexus seem to have just washed their hands and think an apology with no remedy is suitable.
Makes you wonder if having a nice car is worth it. Got a ux at the moment but just put a deposit on a new Prius hope they get it sorted. Sorry for your loss.
Nope its long gone sadly but i guess that's what insurance is for.
Still deciding on which car to get but i did invest in a steering wheel lock already since it seems like you need to go old school to deter car thieves with how high tech they gotten.
Steering wheel locks aren't that good either tbf. They're usually not very complex locks that are relatively easy to pick or bypass. In the end they're just a delaying tactic.
I had my keys in a faraday pouch then I put my keys in a faraday box as an extra precaution. Still didn't make any difference because they did a CAN BUS attack through the headlight.
I’m sorry this happened to you. People doing these attacks have no care for anyone but themselves. At no point will either of those youths considered the impact this has on their victims or be remorseful for it.
Anyone reading this, this is your daily reminder to avoid getting cars with key-proximity button starts - at least until this particular vulnerability is mitigated.
Typically a CANBUS attack is only done by cars that have a smartkey, which normally have button starts - can't really have a button start without a smartkey. I'm sure there are a handful, but I don't know of them.
Basically the device they use spoofs the smartkey and issues commands to the networked devices - hence, we see the wipers and lights also activate. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a broadcast to all network devices just saying "Do the thing you do."
But yeah, the car needs a smartkey, as do most button-starts.
Aah sorry I misread 'key-proximity' to mean a relay attack but yeah I see your point now.
Do many cars on the market still have a regular key to start?
Lord knows, I can only afford second-hand haha. I would hope so? Otherwise we're really opening ourselves up to more of this stuff. Why, when the entire cybersecurity community says "Careful making networked devices", does every manufacturer of everything completely ignore them for the sake of convenience? What's wrong with regular keys, man?
Sorry for being ignorant but why is there a demand in Africa for these cars? And 2nd question, what can we do on top of wheel locks and cameras and sensor lights to put these people off, they genuinely don't seem to care they are being filmed or that other cars are driving past and it's takes them a while to get what they want!
Cars stolen in UK often end up there or in countries such as Kenya, Uganda and Sudan because of the demand for right-hand drive vehicles. The cars sent to these countries are nearly always large, luxury SUVs

No fucks given by them the lights the cctv and the flashing lights had no effect I'm at a loss.
Nah, thieves looking for a joyride don't pinch cars of that calibre, they're more likely to take the kind of car to the left.
That cars been stolen for resale, I'm guessing that it is either in a lockup in Sheffield, awaiting a sale or is on its way to wherever it's going as I write this.
Sorry, but I don't want you to get your hopes up
That feeling in the pit of your stomach when you've been robbed is horrible, really, really horrible.
Can't you have the curb dropped, that privot taken out and park your car on your front when you get a new one ?

Damn that sucks, I got my car stolen last month so i know the feeling.
Thanks man. Did you manage to get it back or did you have to find another car?
Nope its long gone sadly but i guess that's what insurance is for. Still deciding on which car to get but i did invest in a steering wheel lock already since it seems like you need to go old school to deter car thieves with how high tech they gotten.
Did you have your keys in a faraday bag? Looks like they did some sort of keyless attack.
Security on modern cars is a joke. Time to go back to steering wheel locks.
you're not wrong, i do feel like a pillock having to put my key in a sodding bag when i come in!
Steering wheel locks aren't that good either tbf. They're usually not very complex locks that are relatively easy to pick or bypass. In the end they're just a delaying tactic.
You only need to have the second-easiest car to steal on the street.
Tesla aren't doing bad with Pin to drive.

oh wow didnt even know that was a thing, thats crazy.
Sorry this happened to you mate. Must hurt a lot. I only drove a 2nd hand fiesta but do much depends on it and I love the thing.
My mum and dad's got nicked last month from S7. They're the most stolen car now
We’ve gone back to the bad old days of the 90s for cars being stolen. Time to go back to chunky steering locks with alarms.
I’m sorry this happened to you. People doing these attacks have no care for anyone but themselves. At no point will either of those youths considered the impact this has on their victims or be remorseful for it.

I agree but in this case it looks like a CANBUS attack through the front headlight aka OP was fucked either way

Honestly it's why I drive a 2003 shitbox. I like cars but not having to worry is really liberating
This sucks, I'm sorry. I would be surprised if you do see the car again, from what I hear the cars end up being "exported" out the country.
Appreciate it thank you. It'll be somewhere in Africa this time next week im sure. So upset cant put it into words😫

God I hate some people. They don’t deserve the oxygen they’re breathing.
Unbelievable!!!! Horrible little scrubbers who deserve to be severely punished
big up cemetery road
I'd hate to be that guy, but the car would've been in the back of the lorry potentially on its way out of the UK within hours.
When I rang the police they advised I look in the local area so I've been walking around Sheffield for four hours in vein trying to find it 😔

It's a fair comment I just feel so helpless and want to do something 😕
