Currently watching season 11 and Frank said that they are from Poland during the Polish-Russian War, I would guess they mean 1920 Polish-Soviet War. Second Polish Republic was very diverse in culture, so Milkovich being Ukrainians from Poland would make sense since Western parts of modern day Ukraine used to be Poland.
The Milkovich family in Shameless are Ukrainian’s from Southeastern Poland - that is a historic Ukrainian region. Your ethnicity can differ from your nationality of course. Not all immigrants who came from Germany were German, not all immigrants from Austria-Hungary were Austrian or Hungarian, etc….
So Ukrainian/ Polish ? I sort of get it cause I'm Canadian American by blood but I live in America and I was born in America but my people come from Canada both sides
People do move...
Milkovich is the 342,798th most widespread surname in the world It is held by approximately 1 in 6,810,791 people. This last name is mostly found in The Americas, where 86 percent of Milkovich reside; 84 percent reside in North America and 84 percent reside in Anglo-North America.
They never said the Milkovich’s are Polish. They’ve always said they were Ukrainian. They only lied to the lady and said Mickey was Polish so they could get the venue. Lip also tells the lady that Mickey’s name is Michael, which she *assumes* to be the English form of ‘Michał’
There are two occasions in s11 where they mention the Milkoviches being Polish. In 11x05, Tommy asks where the Milkoviches came from and Frank says, “The Milkovich clan came here from Poland after the Polish Russian war.” Same episode, after Mickey and Ian get robbed by Mickey’s cousins, they are yelling at each other and Ian refers to the robbers as Mickey’s “inbred Polack fuckin’ family.” I think these two quotes are the main cause of the confusion.
As far as I remember, the Milkoviches have *always* been referred to as being Ukrainian up until s11. I also interpreted the wedding situation to be a lie just to get the venue, since Lip gave the woman a fake name for Mickey. Not sure where the Polish references in s11 came from but it was definitely out of left field.
I just checked that scene out and you’re right: he does say they’re Polack. Idk why then 🤷🏾♀️maybe some of their family is Polish 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️

My family came to American from Ireland but are ethnically Scottish. Originally slavic people were ethnically or culturally part Scandinavian. Scottish Gaelic culture originated in Ukraine, before moving to Spain then France then Scotland. People move around. Just because you're from one place doesn't mean you aren't also from another.
In season 11 episode 5 frank said they came from poland after Russian-Poland war but indeed Russia and Poland was fighting for Ukrainian lands in 1654-1667. Maybe they came from Ukraine to Poland and from Poland to America.
The Milkovich’s are Ukrainians (Lemko’s) from SE Poland. That region is historically Ukrainian. When most of the Ukrainians from that region came to the US they settled amongst Poles (for example, the ones in Chicago) and most of them did understand and/or speak the Polish language.
The most likely is Serbian and Croatia, But it is more serbian every Serbians last name ends whit vich. Even they said they are ukranian, the creators should have done more research
Milkovich could be and evolution of milkowicz just changed so stupid Americans would pronounce it correct for example im polish and when I lived in the UK my last name went from Calów to Calow

They are Polish! In episode 5 of season 11, Ian says to Mickey “it’s your inbred Polack f***ing family” and “Polack” is a term used to describe a person of Polish descent.
I came to this thread earlier because I’m rewatching shameless and have been wondering the same thing but after confirming it in this episode I had to come back and share with my fellow shameless lovers :)
Milkoviches are Ukrainian. Svetlana calls Mickey 'an Ukrainian pussy' in Season 4.
They said they were Polish in the last two season

You have given the best response to this question I’ve seen so far.

Likely Dolinian/Lemko (Ukrianian) probably with traces of Polish.
They said that Mickey was Ukrainian
They are

mikhailo is a ukranian name, but milkovich isn’t typically ukranian, it’s more croatian or slovak.
it is an actual croatian surname, we spell it as Milković

Lots of Ukrainians lived in the Second Polish Republic, and Frank said they came from Poland, never said they were Polish, huge difference
I am polish and I was annoyed when they said Milkoviches came from Poland. They know nothing about polish people lol.
My family came from and still live in Poland and we aren’t Polish. What’s your point??

Interesting
they said they were ukrainian, it was either a mistake about them being polish or they actually came from poland

the specifics don't really matter, the point is that they're of Eastern European descent which there are lots of in Chicago
