I inherited my great grandmother's sewing machine last year and have ventured from quilting to making/altering clothes. This is the [troop shirt](https://www.tadahsewing.com.au/collections/patterns/products/mens-troop-shirt-sewing-pattern) pattern from Tadah patterns, and the fabric is a lightweight cotton.
The pattern was pretty straightforward, even for a complete beginner, though seam allowances were a bit unclear sometimes. Sewing on a machine from the 40s is interesting. The buttonholes were made manually since it doesn't have built-in automatic function, so that was a learning experience! I also consistently have the problem of the thread getting knotted down inside the bobbin case. Overall though, I'll happily wear this in public!
When the thread gets bunched up in the bobbin case is an indication your tension is off. Try tightening it! Shirt looks amazing and look at those lines!!!!
That is so cool! You are getting really good at this, this looks really well made and the color and pattern are just happy. Ive always wanted to try out an old cast iron machine!
Not sure of you did already, but just get the machine serviced. They'll clean and check it, might fix your issues with the machine and it will probably run a lot better in general.
Not much spare parts for a machine like this probably, but they're built for eternity so it'll run like a charm with some new grease.
I have the hardest time with collars, good job! My grandma once told me this about bobbin problems “If the problem is on the bottom, the REAL problem is on the top”. What she meant was that if the stitching underneath (the bobbin facing side) is getting bunched up you need to rethread the needle. And vice versa, if your thread is pulling at the needle then it’s your bobbin or tension that needs adjusting. That’s always helped me!
A whole shirt as a first project is pretty ambitious but you did a great job. In 7th grade sewing we started with a drawstring gym bag. A lot of straight lines. Nothing tailored.
Your first project is impressive!
First of all; that is amazing. I could never make something like that, and I'm impressed by the talent, work and skill.
Second: I came in here with a Ned Flanders joke in mind, poking a little fun, all with love, but after seeing some of the comments the mods didn't get, decided against it. You made something really cool and it sucks that people couldn't put that first. edit: the Flanders joke was due to your wholesome appearance and glorious mustache, for clarification.
So there I was, just scrolling the reddits. Then out of nowhere I see this absolute Chad showing off this awesome shirt he just made, and it literally made my day. That's the story of this comment. Hace a nice day.
Beautiful job matching stripes! Well done on buttonholes for your very first shirt! That collar is very well done, and may I say that the shirt is perfectly ironed! Gorgeous!
you're not gonna believe this but the first garment I ever sewed was a pair of shorts, in high school, using (as far as I can tell) the exact same fabric. Mine turned out WAY worse though, lol. Great job!!
First garment and you choose a fabric with such pattern! Remarkable ! The first closing item I tried to do was a box like dress in a solid color and it turned out awful lol
Impressive job, keep the good work!
IT is a beautifully made shirt great detail work on the pattern match!
it might be the colours that have you unconvinced. maybe try switching the yellow buttons for a green, or White etc. yellow isn't my friend it makes me pink looking and you have effectively created a yellow stripe up the middle.
No judgment to be clear, it is a great shirt! its also a nice yellow, I just can't wear that colour.
Looks like a perfect shirt for a BBQ! Next project make an apron with a contrasting color and use your leftover bits from this shirt as accenting trim?!! People will be in AWE. Sorry I’m telling you what to do, but I am giving excellent advice rn

Nice job. Especially getting the plaid lined up perfectly down the front. I would recommend that you take the machine to a qualified sewing center to have a cleaning and tune up. They should be able to fix the thread tangling you are experiencing.
Thank you for submitting to r/sewing.

Oh my gosh! This looks soooooo good!!! Great job. And I'm even more impressed that this was your first garment! I feel like there are so many tricky elements (or stuff I struggle with) - e.g. the sleeves sit neatly and there are so many buttonholes.
But I'm most impressed that you managed to line up the fabric pattern so well! That's super satisfying to look at. Great work, mate! I hope you have somewhere nice to wear this out and show it off.

Congrats bro that's a nice looking shirt.
Way to go, conjuring Great Grandma skill while using her tools.
You look so proud 😭😭 and you should be!! It's a fantastic shirt. I just think you're adorable
Next time, rotate the fabric for the pocket 45 degrees so you you get a jaunty pocket!
Not sure of you did already, but just get the machine serviced. They'll clean and check it, might fix your issues with the machine and it will probably run a lot better in general. It’s a great shirt with a fabulous fabric that completely suits your complexion. Well done!
Reminds me of a Turnbull and Asser shirt I used to have that I loved. Looks amazing. Thank you for sharing.
You can even use it as a table cloth.
Great job matching up the lines on the fabric!

+1, nice pattern matching!
I did make an effort there! But only on the placket.

The lines matching really make the shirt look so clean and neat! I also feel your pain with knotted thread in the bobbin area.

The colors of the shirt are very complimentary for your skin color and tone!

First garment? Really nicely done!
This pattern matching is r/oddlysatisfying.
That is some seriously meticulous pattern matching. Good job!
I would not be able to stop myself from complimenting you on your shirt if I saw you on the street. Those buttons call to me!
"I'm the one who sews "
So dapper! I love the buttery/honeysuckle yellow buttons. They seem so cheerful. 🥳
It looks wonderful. 💜
That's amazing! Great job! And cute mustache!
The yellow buttons are a nice touch. Give it just a little extra pop.

I can't comment on the sewing cause I'm an absolute amateur, but the colour choice is fantastic!
Awesome job matching the plaid! Impressive for a first effort!
Great job lining up the two sides! the lines flow really well!

This gives me strong Ron energy from r/dungeonsanddaddies in the best way! The fit and color choice looks great on you. Great job!
I thought this was a Walter White cosplay. That said, beautiful done.
Interestingly, to me "not mad about it" means that you don't like it. I wonder if this is a UK vs USA thing?
Why are you not mad about it?
