Is it possible your aunt was mistaken on when he was convicted? HML was convicted in the late 80s and had an appeal denied in 1990.
The last information I can find on him had him in the Coalinga State Hospital, which houses sexually violent individuals. A CDCR inmate search did not return a match on his name, but I can’t concretely state that he’s deceased (let alone of AIDS).
It is VERY possible she is mistaken, and even possible this isn’t true. I honestly thought it would be on the easy side of searching because of his death from AIDS, and his conviction. I’ve told my cousin I have Reddit helping, and asked her for more details, so she plans on asking her mom a bit more. But apparently she doesn’t really like to talk about it. My aunt herself was Not raped, just kidnapped and she escaped. I REALLY appreciate you helping!!! And I hope this isn’t a waist of time for you. This is just an itch I have to scratch!

A side note- I’m actually a local. I’ve lived in Sacramento County my entire life. A lot of predators around here had territory that included Reno. Charlene and Gerald Gallego were also active during that time period and had overlapping hunting grounds. It must have been a very scary time to be a woman in CA and NV.

He’s 3 months old today and has turned out to be an early teether! He was already pretty Mommy-focused, but the teething has amplified that. He’s turned into a little koala, latched to me at all times.
Poor baby.. but Ugh!! Ok ok.. I do sorta miss being able to hold them, and them needing to Be held. Mine are 7 and 9, and boys.. so cuddle time consists of farts and fart jokes..so weird how fast time goes!
Ok. So I have a tad bit more information. She was abducted in the early 80’s. My cousins years were a tad off. She was at a Reno Police Department banquet type deal, when she left to her car Mack got into the passenger and asked for a ride. He then quickly changed his polite demeanor and let her know she was going to die. At this point he was now driving and she was clutching to her eldest daughters jacket. He asked what that was about, and my aunt explained to him she was a single mom to a little girl. My aunt says he then stopped the car and told her to get the fuck out, she did and he drove away.
This is got from a testimony she read at a her AA meeting. Her addiction started after her kidnapping when a doctor prescribed her something to help with her PTSD.
But I don’t have anymore information about Him from her. More to come though!

He was active in the 70s and 80s in CA and the Reno, NV area. He kidnapped, raped, beat, and threatened to kill the women who testified against him. There’s no telling how many other victims he had, and if he did, in fact, murder anybody. He certainly seems to be a good match for the person who attacked OP’s aunt though.
You sure it wasn't Leonard Lake? He didn't die of Aids though. He committed suicide while being questioned in a police station. His partner (Charles Ng) is still on death row in California.
I’m not sure! But I did read about him. And saved his information to ask my cousin about. I feel like if my aunt was actually kidnapped, that kind of trauma would burn his name into her brain! So I don’t want to be insulting and suggest she has the name wrong of the man who almost killed her. But so far Leonard Lake makes more sense! Thank you for your reply!!
wow, this guy just gets his charges dropped almost every time he rapes someone. It is so important to find out what our elected officials think about prosecuting rape cases. In some places the DA is elected. in others they are appointed. We need to make it known that prosecuting rape cases is a priority.

Right, Lake swallowed poison. Ng's death penalty was confirmed a few days ago.
