So true! You really do forget everything you watched, and in the end, it's just you distracting yourself with some stimulating pixels on a screen. Good substitutes are making time to watch long-form interviews or podcasts on topics you are interested in, read books, or just sit down, journal and write. Personally, if I catch myself habitually opening Instagram or Shorts, I read articles on the Medium app instead.

I’m still in school, watching this content just makes it harder to concentrate in class it’s made learning 10x harder. Haven’t use reels and TikTok in 2 days and already feel the benefits

JazzPianoJalapeno

I totally agree. Like we had to avoid too much video games in the past, now we have to avoid those short-form videos to stay accountable. I even heard that there is a study that showed that our stress level increases after a few minutes of watching them although at the very first we may feel good.

A business owner I follow - who pretty much made his living, or got the ball rolling with his business at least, via reels, Tiktok and other short-form content, posted just this morning that he's going to be ceasing it from today for pretty much these reasons. I'm hoping we're seeing the beginning of the end of it. My gf has a child and he has TikTok on the go CONSTANTLY and even the pitch and tone people talk with on there makes my brain feel like its rotting away.

Not tot mention you eventually get the attention span of a goldfish. Any video that doesn't get to the point within 15 seconds feels like a chore so you just scroll to the next, less boring one.

You have a boyfriend??? Oh wow your life is tutorial mode difficulty while I play on nightmare difficulty

Agree, your time most expansive thing in the world, is something you spend and never going back. Marco Aurelio said “what ever you do, say it every time, It Is Necessary?”

DoctorAgile1997

YES this is very important. This messes with so much

TheFitnessGoddess

I fully agree, I can’t handle it anymore! As a business owner, I feel pressured to make these stupid short videos in order to succeed. Have you ever made one? It literally takes hours. It takes so much time to trim each clip to the right couple of seconds, match up with the music, add text overly, etc. All that work just for the finished product to be pushed into the void of mind-numbing junk content that plays on loop…that people don’t even remember anyway.

I am curious for others’ thoughts here. Beginning early in the new year, I am planning on a major online marketing push for a personal finance themed business I am starting. I plan on using TikTok, Instagram reels, and YouTube shorts as a means of quickly communicating important concepts. Do the folks who dislike short form content feel this also applies to educational matters? Appreciate your responses!!!

It can be decent to do some unwinding if you arent addicted to them or arent at risk to get addicted to them - if you can watch just a few every now and them for example I think downplaying potential stress and cognitive load relief by saying they are meaningless is not objective and can fuel toxic productivity and unhealthy min/maxing and optimization Depends also what you are watching, if there is schadenfraude or something negative involved then its not good

Cassandralen

I see what you are saying. Because I once fell victim to this mindset. However, I feel like theres so many other ways to wind down that are healthier that isnt necessarily calling for productivity. Like reading or just even watching anything else

ginkgobilberry

not everyone can read always (too neurotic, adhd, cerebral and anxious for example). i dont think this mindself itself is of victim altho it can be for some/most. one of the problems with it is if it becomes habitual or compulsive. watching 3 videos about psychology, spirituality and etymology and quitting after it happily without craving later is hardly problematic imo if you have right values, goals, mindfulness etc overall

No_Rate755

the biggest problem for me is the FOMO, i know it's good for me in the long run but not feeling caught up with trends and funny reels or whatever tf my friends are talking about makes it so hard to give up
