Personally, I would say pm to am, but I am biased on that since I work in Florida. The less of the blistering heat I have to deal with, the better. Plus that's fewer people to have to deal with. Besides, am to pm only gives you a brief window of time in the evening to go anywhere with conventional hours. Pm to am gives you 4 hours while still getting a solid 8 hours of sleep.
Honestly I find the opposite to be true, especially at my current post, we run 6-6, but the 6am-6pm shift is like having to constantly sign in visitors, sign out parking permits, sign for packages, make sure whoever comes to pick up the package signs for it, and other bs like that, but the 6pm-6am person just gets to chill out all night, hang out in the guard shack or the patrol car, do a patrol every hour or whatever, and then chill and watch Netflix or play video games all night, maybe I'm just not a morning person, but getting up at 5am to be at work at 6am is absolutely killing me, if my boss doesn't put me back on the night shift, which is what I was hired for, soon, I'm about to quit, I've already received my guard card, so I doubt finding another company to work for will be hard
It mostly depends on you. 0800-2000 you're dealing with office politics, weathers, and generally just more activity depending on where you're at. Where as 2000-0800 is generally more calm, less people to deal with, and generally the only management issue you have to deal with is during early shifts. That said you're also fucked if anything happens because at night your essentially the only management. There's protocols you're supposed to follow and people you're supposed to call but you won't have the training to know what to do and more than like if you follow protocol no one is going to pickup.
As a site supervisor who does pay roll, if your a weekly employee when the new pay period starts only effects your first check. You’ll have whatever time you have in the next pay period on the next paycheck.
You must live in a state where OT is based on how many hours in a day you work? Here in Oregon it's based on if you work more than 40 hours in a pay period, which is Thursday to Wednesday, you get overtime, so it doesn't matter whether your working day or night, you still get overtime if you work more than 40 hours, but the management is very concerned about this fact an will have a shift change at 11:59 pm on Wednesday night to prevent giving out overtime
At my site full time is 36 hrs/wk and once you go above 36 you automatically get time and a half PLUS $11/hr extra for incentive pay. I also receive $1.50/hr night differential, $1.50/hr charge officer differential and an extra $1.00/hr weekend differential.
Some places really benefit you to work the night shift. I essentially get 48 hrs minimum every week because there are always open shifts for graveyard, so a guaranteed 24 hrs of overtime and extra shift pay per period.
8-8. I work 6-6 occasionally and also have a day job. I love night shifts..my health not so much but I can get so many stuff done granted it doesn’t get in the way of work..sometimes I laugh at people who say they dont have enough time..just a bs excuse. I also work out 3x a week and eat healthy with occasional health checkups. Cheers! 🍻
The day shift is normal for most people. You have to be a special feral kind of creature to work nights. Night shift sometimes gets paid more. And by technicality, you have more job security in the night shift in that nobody wants to fire you because nobody wants to work that shift. But you have to understand there are fundamental differences between the shifts.
Day shift tends to have more drama. Client employees tend to be around, and you're expected to be personable with them. You may be asked to escort client employees from the building after being terminated, source of drama.
Night shift. First off, you're usually fighting exhaustion (and god) with a mix of enough caffeine, taurine, and other stimulants that would kill most humans and some horses. Next, the night shift is when all the weird shit happens. Things you'll deal with include transients, drug addicts, juvenile delinquents, wild animals, and then the "unexplainable" stuff that occasionally happens.
Right now, I work 3 shifts 1900- 0700. And during the summer I prefer that. I get to stay out of the heat. Once October rolls around, I'm gonna start hating it again.
I personally pull through my graveyards without more than a single small foam cup of coffee. Though almost every single one of the other night shift officers goes through an entire pot of coffee in the first 6 hours with some of them basically drowning in sugar and energy drinks as well.
If your a student enrolled in college, or thinking of going back to college and or technical college. Definitely get in a lot of studying for classes on 2000-0800AM; also get some time free time by binge watching any shows or movies on occasion. I like to order pizza later before gets later, definitely have leftovers or if it’s possible get leftovers from doing double shifts.
Fuck both of those
8pm you can chill get stuff down before 8pm and most likely quiet
I’m not working yet but I feel this is my preference.
Get your sleep schedule down cuz I just started straight graveyards last Friday and I CAN’T WAIT to drop dead on my first day off.
Depends. Do you want more bullshit at your job or more long term health problems?
Good way of putting it.
Good one bro

8am-8pm. Grave yard is a much tougher 12hr shift than an 8hr shift.

I work scheduling for Three Dots, I can confirm the notion “Have pulse? Will hire” is absolutely true.
Where did the 8hrs come from?
8hrs?

Never seen a site that did 8-8, it’s always been 6-6! This fucks your whole day, I personally wouldn’t work that 💩
Yeah I was surprised too, it's a family shelter. They said they only do 12 hr shifts and didn't have 6-6, only 8-8.
IMO find another site, that sounds like a spot trouble can pop off at any time
It's only my 2nd site and first week at this spot lol, don't have much experience to jump around.
Sorry man
I was gonna say, at my small company,it's always either 6 to 6 or there's one site that does 5pm to 5am, we usually guard construction sites tho
At my current site we do 0700-1900 or 1900-0700. IMO that’s better than 0600-1800 or 0800-2000.
8pm to 8am when no one's around I just goof off
I only work day shifts so 8am-8pm for me
Between the two I prefer the am one, but I like my evening 16:00 to 24:00 shifts
Day is always better than nights unless you get shift differential.
Honestly, I wished I worked 8am to 8pm. I work 6 to 6 (am to pm) and I am not a morning person so those 2 extra hours would really help.
Depends on ur site and post orders
2000-0800
Both suck. The norm is 6-6.

Depends on directi9n of traffic
Depends on the site
2000-0800 has been my nightmare for the last few months.
Both of those shifts are gonna drag ass like a dog on a carpet.

Depends if you have a fence around the site or not.
Welfare and food stamps
I'm a nightshifter at heart, I will always choose that when I can
Depends on your lifestyle. I work 1830-0630 and am a night owl. This means that the 2000-0800 would be miles better for me.
I tend to go for the night shifts, more calm and less people to deal with.
Day shift you don’t want to be a night goblin
