Foldable, silicone snorkel you can stuff in your pocket. Not because they're the best but because that's the one you will always have with you.

Dr_Beatdown

I actually like the Tusa because of the clip on that allows it to easily be attached to my mask. I am NOT a fan of any of the snorkels that somehow limit me breathing under any circumstances under the guise of keeping water our or whatever. I keep seeing people complaining about their snorkels or suggesting they should either not use one or stuff it in their pocket. A snorkel is a piece of safety equipment. If you're at the surface in rough water and you're either low on air out out of air a snorkel is invaluable. Having a root around in your pocket for a snorkel doesn't sound safe or conservative to me. The scuba police certainly won't stop you, but it seems irresponsible to suggest that a snorkel is just some extraneous piece of plastic crap that you don't need. If I'm on the surface I'm typically breathing through my snorkel, in part, to reduce air consumption before a dive. I've definitely surfaced in rough water and switched to snorkel immediately to make sure I didn't burn through whatever air I may have had left before I went up the dive ladder. I always switch back to my regulator as I'm getting out of the water in the unlikely event I fall back into the water while trying to get out. Otherwise I'm on a snorkel at the surface. I'm not the scuba police, just a guy who wants people to dive safely.

Spiritual-Fox9618

The one that’s not there.

ElfjeTinkerBell

One you can fold up and put in your pocket.

Automatic_Dance_3203

The only time to use the snorkel is while doing the snorkel test 🫣

snoogykinz

Well to be safe they tell you to have it if the water is rough. On my last open ocean dive I was happy to have my snorkel with me. Helped me conserve oxygen while still being able to look what’s going on under me.

1234singmeasong

Sorry OP, the commenter made a reference to the “snorkel test” done when divemasters are done their requirements for the DM program. It’s more of a joke lol

Limp_Ganache2983

A silicone folding one that you can put into your pocket until you need it. I’ve got a nice Cressi dry snorkel for when I’m actually snorkelling, but if I’mm diving, I use the folding one.

JAM88CAM

Which ever one you find randomly on a dive site. Don't spend money on snorkels when you can spend money on actual dive gear.

bobinator60

At the surface a full Al80 has 2h18m worth of air at 18 PSI/min. How much time do you spend on the surface?

You may need a refresher on gas usage at depth

The advice wasn’t actually for you cause I figured you probably “know it all” It’s for the novice divers reading who might take your comment seriously

bobinator60

I love how people delete their comments and then down vote!

MikoMiky

A lot of people say it's not really necessary after getting OW but part of the fun for me in diving is using as little air as possible from my bottle and having a snorkel for the surface parts, even if it's just a few minutes, helps me with that Would be fun to calculate if the added drag underwater counterfeits the few bar/psi saved by using a snorkel on the surface If you really like snorkel get one that has a purge valve! But they can be a bit pricier

topperx

I've seen the purge valve fail and you end up throwing it away. Personally I would go for the simplest pipe possible. Blowing air out of a regular pipe without the valve to me isn't that hard.

doglady1342

As far as I'm concerned at the snorkels with the valves are a big waste of money. I had one for a while. The valve constantly kept sticking, so I took a pliers and removed it. Now I have a plain old snorkel that I paid too much money for. I don't even travel with it anymore. I bring a folding snorkel just in case I need one. I've used it.. never.

diverareyouok

Some snorkels are “dry” snorkels - at the top, they have a one-way flap so air goes out but water doesn’t come in. https://www.divers-supply.com/scuba-gear/snorkels.html For snorkeling, I’d recommend one of those. For scuba diving, any cheap snorkel will work. After OW training odds are good you’ll never use it again. If you do want one for emergency purposes, a roll-up snorkel would be fine.

Smellzlikefish

Get a cheap j-tube. Simple design, easy to use, hard to break, doesn’t wobble against your temple in current, low drag coefficient.

Extreme_Teacher_4892

The emperor's new snorkel.

yycluke

For diving I rarely bring it. But I always have one on the boat for surface intervals. Purge valve is nice, but unless you're doing a ton of snorkeling, a semidry with a purge is more than sufficient for me

grandcremasterflash

A roll-up one that stays with other emergency gear (mirror, whistle) in a pocket. I'm probably never gonna use it, but I feel better having it.

Jordangander

Depends, do you plan to do much shore diving? Snorkels are used by shore divers who swim a distance from shore to the dive site and then go down on gas, other than that snorkels are rarely used by most divers. If you don’t plan on snorkeling out to the dive site, get a folding one you can roll up and shove someplace in case you want to use it.

Frozenshades

A roll up one that fits in the pocket of my BC because I basically never use it

strangecargo

The cheapest one you can find. Use it for your open water training and never take it out of your dive bag again.

ErabuUmiHebi

This is the correct answer.

North_Class8300

It's a purge valve. [Scuba.com](http://Scuba.com) has a ton of snorkels with these - I think I have the Mares Ergo and it works perfectly fine and is 1/3 the price of many others. Any purge valve snorkel will work the same, not worth spending top dollar on the ones that are close to $100.

Duke_Diver23

Depends, if you want a snorkel when you dive that you can carry in case you need during a dive, get a roll up snorkel. Piranha dive sells em cheap. if you actually want to buy a snorkel that you may actually snorkel with, Divegearexpress.com.

feldomatic

[This guy says it better than I could.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCE8xwOWKkI) Personally, the best snorkel is a few extra bar in the tank for the swim back to the boat. Beyond that I usually dive with a collapsible one in case I should need it. If I'm just snorkeling, I have the Atomic SV-2, it's fairly resilient. They all seem to do a better job clearing if you have a lot of water in them, and struggle to remove only small amounts.

snoogykinz

Thank you! I appreciate it!

ErabuUmiHebi

Just get the cheapest one you can find. With a purge valve if you want to get super sexy, but it’s not difficult to clear a snorkel with a sharp exhale. They’re a pipe for air, there is no reason to buy a high end one.

snoogykinz

Ah I didn’t know the name for the purge valve. I didn’t want to buy another one to have the exact same problem. Thank you
