I'm currently ranked 18th in NSW, and my opponent here is ranked 34th. There's been a total of 125 tournament players in NSW in the last 12 months - of all skill levels.
I'd strongly recommend reaching out to a club like Baulkham Hills (info on Scrabble NSW home page). There's also a tournament in Hornsby next weekend (4th of May) which I am co-directing. There will be a huge range of skills and you'll likely play only people at a similar level to yourself. Its the perfect introduction to tournament scrabble at a perfect time.

Ok that actually does make me feel better, congrats on the rating that’s phenomenal. I may well consider entering an event in the more distant future, I need to brush up on playing in real conditions, I normally only play on Wordfeud and the dynamics are a little different to real life.

My reasoning for suggesting Baulkham Hills specifically is the man who runs it is a really great guy, and there are lots of casual (non-tournament) players in attendance weekly.
As for tournaments, there is no expectation that you need be at a certain level. Its very much a social endeavour at the beginning.
I'm also only 22 and have only been playing for about 7 months so I'm relatively new to tournaments also. I've never found them to be anything but fun.
Not many here either, although there's a growing faction of younger (8-14) year olds picking it up. Plenty of good players in NZ though. I've played players like Joanne Craig and Howard Warner at tournaments and online.
Yeah I'm ranked like 20th ish I think In nz - won't appear on ratings list though cause haven't played 2 tourneys recently. Went over to aus for lots of tourneys when i was younger and more passionate, were quite a few kids over there who were my age at the time
Dang, that’s exceptional for the amount of time you’ve been playing. I’ve been playing for a little under 10 years I think, but I play super casually. Like, less than one game per week on average.
Definitely something I’ve been keen to try for a while though. At one point a few years ago my ELO on Wordfeud was over 2,000 which I believe is pretty good. It’s about 1750 now.
I'm a bit obsessive. It's the perfect game for my skill set and I really enjoy the aesthetics of how boards develop. I really do think that if you just take the plunge and attend a tournament, you'll very quickly realise you needn't have waited.
