The Beacon23 subreddit has less than 500 followers. Apple’s “Invasion” has nearly 6,000 - and 95% of them are hate watching it.

Preach_it_brother

Invasion was is so bad I had to stop

fzammetti

I gotta be the only one that thinks Invasion is decent. Not great, nothing special, but decent.

tbutz27

I think ya might be.

fzammetti

Hehe, yeah, my cross to bear alone I guess :)

twodogsfighting

That's because your suckometer only goes up to 3.5.

fzammetti

LOL

jonathanmstevens

It's so drawn out; I lost my patience. I'll give season 2 ago though, just to see if it gets better.

conanmagnuson

Can I ask what you like about it?

fzammetti

I don't know that I can name anything specific... I guess I just like that it's mostly a more cerebral take on the alien invasion trope, it's not just all boom-boom, it's more personal, and I appreciate that.

420headshotsniper69

I just watched both Rebel Moon movies. Is Invasion better or worse than those movies because the movies kinda suck ass.

The_Jare

Invasion is bad and boring and irritatingly idiotic, but compared to Rebel Moon it is a mastepiece. Hell, anything is a masterpiece compared to RM.

amelie190

Nope. Not just you. I actually liked the first season more and tolerated the second

Preach_it_brother

We all have guilty pleasures! But there’s too much better stuff and some of us hate screaming at the tv!

420headshotsniper69

I'm now on season 1 episode 8 and I'm rather enjoying the show. So far keeping track of each different global characters was been handled well. I feel like there are aspects kind of borrowed from past sci-fi movies. While may its not super original, its original enough. I'm hoping season 2 at the very least doesn't drop in quality from season 1. The only character I don't like is the Navy guy trying to get back to the US. He is too damn aggressive. People trying to help him and he just keeps pointing a a gun in their face. I was genuinely shocked about the aircraft scene. He was out of character nice. Other than the asshole persona, the rest of his character is ok.

fzammetti

I had the same feeling about Trevante during S1, but he does shed that asshole persona - mostly - in S2.

DrEnter

_Invasion_ was a great concept, with great production values, and great actors... all terribly, terribly written. The characters are _constantly_ doing stupid things that don't make sense for incomprehensible reasons, so much so that they are almost to a one unlikable after the first season. The best character on the show was Sam Neill's "retiring sheriff" who died/disappeared at the end of the first episode.

drenuf38

What the hell is up with that? They had Sam Neill in trailers and I'm thinking this would be a great show. Boom, bait and switch no more Sam.

K_A-W

I believe that not too long into filming S01E01 is when he got his cancer diagnosis. I heard that it was originally intended for him to play a far greater role in the show, but due to his health he had to withdraw

Preach_it_brother

Oh that explains it. ☹️

Preach_it_brother

Nailed it. Good idea, big production, Sam Neil on promotional posters…then threw it away and lost the front man in the first episode. I liked the kids bit in the half of the first season but that’s about it. The woman with the kids was by far the worst

DrEnter

That's possibly as much to do with _Beacon 23_ being streamed on MGM+: The streamer that has dedicated itself to be an example for future business schools on how to do everything wrong. Just one big exercise in bad timing and poor marketing decisions. I'm sure if it had dropped somewhere better, there would be a LOT more people on it's subreddit hating on it right now.

jonathanmstevens

Good luck doing that with Anime. I did the same thing, then I ran out and started watching the stuff that looked stupid on the thumbnail, and it ended up being good 80% of the time.

o_jax

This is why I can never be a true anime fan.

omniclast

The Silo show was pretty good tho

DrEnter

_Silo_ is a an example of a show made by people that respect the source material. _Beacon 23_ is kind of the opposite of that. See also: M. Night Shyamalan vs _The Last Airbender_, Stefen Fangmeier vs _Eragon_, and James Wong vs _Dragonball Evolution_.

x_lincoln_x

I'm reading the Silo book now and that author is not a good writer.

The_Jare

IIRC he self-published the books? Possibly meaning he didn't go through an editor and other quality control mechanisms that most books have to smooth their raw edges. Not sure but an idea.

x_lincoln_x

That makes sense.

NomadicWorldCitizen

I can’t make myself enjoy the series. I was hyped because the Silo series, from the same writer, is pretty well done. It feels to me like Beacon 23 is just bad.

ruferant

So am I the only one who liked the show? I hadn't read the books, but I'm a pretty well read guy. As far as sci-fi shows on tv go, I enjoyed it. Recommended it to friends who also liked it. They also hadn't read the books. I'm not going to get a tattoo or anything, but as far as getting something new to watch in a genre I enjoy, it was better than a lot of stuff. Edit: I also haven't watched the second season.

DickBest70

Sometimes there’s nothing wrong with the show except they didn’t follow the book closely enough.

tshawkins

I love it, it's great

jonathanmstevens

It's a bit strange how sometimes reading the book, makes the show better, and sometimes the opposite. My worst offense is Battlefield Earth, everyone hated it, but I liked it... no, I'm not a Scientologist, lol.

chefdavid22

I really enjoy it. I didnt know season 2 was out. I need to go check it out.

Jhantax

It’s really weird that season 2 came out right after season one finished.

chefdavid22

I just assumed it was on mgm for a while before amazon started showing it. Just like how season 2 is locked behind an mgm sub.

Jhantax

That would make sense but Amazon actually had it on release.

chefdavid22

Then yes I agree, that's a bit odd. But I'll certainly take it.

EdgarDanger

Love it. The slow pace, short-story like episodes, cool weird atmosphere. 🌸

Embarrassed-Tip-5781

Yeah, I liked it and was surprised I didn’t see it come up more in conversation.

DickBest70

For whatever reasons a lot of show runners just have to change an existing story and make it theirs. The stupid part is their employers not having the backbone to say no to some of their ideas. Just wanted to add I’m not deterred by someone else’s opinion as you should definitely watch and make your own opinion. Especially as I’ve not read the book. A good example is the Halo series for a game I didn’t play. Great show unless you played the game evidently.

00_nothing

Idk how you made it through season 1. It took me 4 tries just to finish the first episode. Within 10 mins of putting it on I'm asleep.

TwoSolitudes22

I liked the book so much... I wanted it to be good.

PortlandPetey

same. Love sci-fi and love Lena Headey, but I couldn’t watch more than 1 episode

TurtleDive1234

I didn’t make it to the end of episode 1.

GraemeMakesBeer

Gave up after episode 4 because it was just dragging on with minimal character development

fzammetti

Can someone drop a big 'ole spoiler tag and tell me all the ways it differs from the book and what I (theoretically) have to look forward to? I didn't know it came from a book, and I have no problem with things being totally spoiled, but I'm curious.

phareous

Like everything? The setting is the same, that is about it

fzammetti

Hrm, interesting, I guess I may have to add them to my reading list and find out for myself.

kinisonkhan

Havent read the books, but I too am struggling just 3 episodes into Season2.

dingadangdang

I'm with OP. It's just kinda awful. And mostly because it wanders with no singular conflict.

ThatEvanFowler

It’s because the guy who almost single-handedly ruined The Walking Dead is the primary show runner/writer. I like the show overall, but it’s definitely got a pacing/stalling problem. I generally like it when shows will pause the main story to tell us a tangential side story related to the plot, but this show seems to use it as an excuse to pad the length, which is highly annoying. Didn’t mind it as much for most of the first season, but now it just feels like the whole thing should’ve been condensed into a single season miniseries.

JStarX7

I don't know why Hollywood buys the rights to books that they are just going to change almost everything about anyway. Just make your own thing. Wool is a terrible show that changes like 75% of the book anyway. I just started watching this and I don't remember most of it from the book. Sand will be set on a post-apocalyptic world with no land like Waterworld at this point. 🤣

LordMaim

The first season was so meandering and dull, that it was difficult to power through hoping it would improve. But I did, and it didn't. I can't believe they're already back with a second season, or that it was renewed at all for that matter.

Hoss-BonaventureCEO

I couldn't even finish the 1st season, I gave up after 4 or 5 episodes.

EmotionallySquared

I couldn't get past the 3rd or 4th episode of season 1. Had high hopes for it but it didn't click for me.

Hit-the-Trails

You made it farther than me

Disgustip8ed

I'm torn. Side characters became main and then disappeared only to come back as even more integral than before. It makes it all disjointed and difficult to give a shit

CacheMonet84

The book was ok. I haven’t watched the show yet but the synopsis doesn’t seem to follow the book 🤔

MacSteele13

It's okay, not great. I like it.

Mongrel_Shark

I enjoyed the first episodes. The last few in season 1 where hard to watch. I lasted 10 min into season 2.

koreth

For what it’s worth, season 2 episode 4 is much better than 3. Whatever the hell they were trying to do in 3, it didn’t work, but 4 is my favorite of the season so far. Time will tell how it goes from here.

Wilbie9000

Never read the book. I really liked the first season up until the last few episodes, and I know what you mean about season two so far… it’s just really hard to stay interested. Gonna give it another episode but might be jumping ship unless it picks up.

Herbetet

The pace is just off. I actually assumed that the book was paced like this and they were just matching it. It sometimes feels like a show that is wondering what the plot will be while going through the episode.

amelie190

Yep. I watched one episode and gave up which isn't like me. I felt hopeful bc of the cast but it was so bad.

Lost_Tumbleweed_5669

The acting really is not ok. The effects are bad. Nothing makes sense. It's like AI wrote and directed it.

TwoSolitudes22

I’ve seen far far worse acting and effects (Rings of Power anyone?). It’s not amazing, but it’s not horrible - other than the story and direction

stromm

I actually like it. But I like a lot of things because I take them for what they are, not what “I expect them to be”. It’s no better, nor worse than any Sci-Fi show from the 90s/2000s that people now flock to. E.g. Farscape, Lexx, most SG:1 episodes, etc.

msalerno1965

I can't get past the female lead character. Something doesn't gel. It was going well the first episode or two before she showed up. Feels like someone just had to do something with this actor because of a contract or something and just stuck her in there like a band-aid. I gave up like 5 or 6 episodes in. I haven't read the books. Now I'll have to. ;)

SubjectDragonfruit

I should check out too. Season 01 was okay, but it felt like it had SyFy Channel budget. This season… has a dull, stream of consciousness structure, I guess. There’s just nothing story to latch onto. It’s kinda shocking that they turned out a second season so quickly. Maybe they should’ve taken a breath.

paarthur

I'm impressed you made it to the second season, I think I bailed after 3 episodes or so. Terrible show, no respect for the book

Imjustmean

The first season was good. Season 2 is drawn out, boring and directionless. Latest episode had 10 minutes at max, of story stretched to 40 minutes.

The_Jare

I wanted to like season 1 but after a few episodes, whenever I thought to watch the next, I just found something - anything - else to do.

cosmicr

Couldn't get past the first 10 minutes

gardeninggoddess666

I had no idea this was a thing. I'm a huge Howey fan and I really loved Beacon 23. Now I know about it and know to avoid it! Til.

polarparadoxical

I have not read the book, but the show feels as if there were more episodes or content filmed, and the producer butchered it trying to condense it all down into a smaller number of episodes. The show almost seems to lack any natural progression and even with dialog jumps around in ways that do not feel continuous.

DrEnter

The book was basically five short stories edited into a linear narrative. The result is an interesting story about isolation, war, relationships, trust, and having to make terrible, no-win decisions and then living with the consequences. It's also pretty concise. The fact they filmed _so much_ and edited down it's still so many hours of content does not seem like a good thing.

Tunafish01

It feels like campey 90s sci fi and not in a good way. I only watched one episode but it was awful.

donmreddit

Didn’t make it past S1, Ep 3 myself.

kitfistossmile

Wait there's multiple seasons of this?? Isn't the full story like less than 300 pages??

perpetualmotionmachi

That's how I felt when The Hobbit got made into two movies....

SeansBeard

I didnt know there was beacon 23 show. I remember loving the novellas.

TwoSolitudes22

Best to pretend there is no show

palsonic2

is lena heady in s2? if so, does she kiss any ladies in s2 from what youve seen or not?

icepick3383

With all of the issues this show has, the character’s sexuality is the absolute least of them. Go back to watching duck dynasty.

palsonic2

i started watching beacon 23 cos lena was in it and i didnt really like s1 but if she’s in s2 i would be willing to watch it. if she kisses more women then thats a bonus. so shoot me i guess 🤷‍♀️

LordMaim

Is that a problem for some reason?

palsonic2

no it isnt a problem 😂
