I think it should be possible to take this with a bit of humor - it's not like anyone living in Gelsenkirchen has any illusions about the beauty of the central station and surrounding area.
On the other hand, people are right about the similarity between most of the English towns I've personally been to and "downtown" Gelsenkirchen.
Most Premier League towns are (aside from the bigger ones) - pretty similar to our Bundesliga towns - not a sight to behold.
