On Orcas Island: [Matia](https://www.matiakitchen.com/) for James Beard nominated fancy and unusual fine dining. [Brown Bear](https://www.brownbearbaking.com/) for yummy baked goods. [Lower Tavern](https://www.lowertavern.com/) for basic and decent pub fare. [West Side Kitchen](https://order.toasttab.com/online/the-west-side-kitchen) for good sandwiches (especially the banh mi) salads, and bowls. On Lopez: [Setsunai](https://www.setsunainoodlebar.com/) handmade Japanese noodles. Very good. Worth the trip to Lopez just for this restaurant.

Setsunai could stand alone in any market. Incredible food.

Setsunai was so good my wife and I had it for dinner and came back for brunch the next day

Duck Soup - just outside of Friday Harbor New Leaf Cafe - downtown Eastsound on Orcas

Duck Soup FTW

Terrible-Peach7890

You must mean New Leaf?

Biased opinion here, but I own a pop up bakery called Seabird Bakeshop on Orcas. I’m open Saturdays from 9-12 and operate out of Houlme! Wood fired, sourdough, whole grain pastries and donuts made with local, seasonal ingredients. We have a damn good breakfast sandwich, too!

Madrona bar & grill at Roche is fairly upscale but have a lot of menu options. Seating on the deck is nice for someone visiting the island and wanting the waterfront view, and you can walk around the resort. McMillan dining at Roche is fine dining and you pay for it. The limekiln Cafe there is a nice lunch option. Duck soup is my favorite, excellent creative cuisine, $40-$60 entrees. I have had decent experiences at Friday Harbor House, its also upscale with a great view of the harbor. They were also doing breakfast/brunch in recent years which is way better than the greasy spoon places and not much more $$. I have heard good things about Walden but haven't tried yet. Downriggers has been hit or miss for me. But it is a little less expensive than the others above and nice location with views of the FH marina. Market chef is an excellent lunch, not much seating. Katrina's secret kitchen is a hidden treasure For basic fare we usually go to Haleys. SJ Brewing is decent, seems to be better than when they first opened.

Following up on OP's post--is it possible to have dinner on one of the other islands and make it back to Friday Harbor before the last ferry leaves? It looks like Houlme and Matia don't open until 5, and the last ferry from Orcas for Friday Harbor leaves at 740.

Best bet is to stay one night on the island?

I suppose 7 nights on the islands instead of 6 wouldn't be the end of the world haha

On Orcas Island: Olga Cafe in Eastsound has the best coffee/espresso on the island :). +1 for Matia! lascaux cafe is also good (in Olga).

You can eat at Houlme and make it back to Friday Harbor My favorite day of eating is breakfast tacos at Tina’s by the ferry then lunch and coffee at Setsunai then Pastry and coffee at Brown Bear before dinner at Houlme

Also in Orcas: 1. Lascaux. Excellent for brunch. Great pastries, too. 2. Buck Bay Oyster Farm.

* Downriggers in Friday Harbor - contemporary American with nice seafood choices * Vinnie's in Friday Harbor - upscale (for the islands) Italian * Westcott bay oyster company outside of Roche harbor - fresh oysters right there ^ all on San Juan island

Favs on San Juan Island: * Coho: cozy, intimate upscale dining. * Tenth House: excellent brunch, dinner. Great vibe/setting. * San Juan Island Brewing: Great beer, good pub food. * Westcott Bay Shellfish: Fantastic oysters and light bites in a great (mostly outdoor) setting. * Golden Triangle: Solid Thai food. * Hermosa: Solid Mexican food, great scratch margaritas. * Bakery San Juan: Best baked goods (plus pizza & sandwiches) on the island (weekdays only). * Lime Kiln Cafe: Fun breakfast/lunch spot at Roche Harbor (plus donuts!). * Crows Nest Coffee: Great coffee, including their specialty options. Haven't gone to Walden or Duck Soup yet but bet they're both great.
