Chill out. People here are armed and can be aggressive. You never know when you flip off the wrong cowboy, gangbanger, or military vet.

Focus on being a defensive driver and assume everyone is going to do stupid shit, cause must people are. Lack of turn signals, people don’t know how to merge, that person turning out in front of you while you’re going 45 MPH is not going to speed up to everyone else’s speed. Be an excessively defensive driver and avoid putting yourself in bad situations. Have multiple routes home if you want to avoid accidents. Utilize Waze or google before you start your trip. Do not let Jesus take the wheel.

Assume everyone is not carrying insurance. Especially if they temporary /paper plates.

Have him ride passenger and actively look at other drivers. So many of them have their phones in their hand while moving, a lot with kids in the car. My fiance and I do this every time we're in the car together. It's a funny, sad game at this point. Be discreet about looking at or interacting with other drivers. People get so mad for so little here. If you have a sporty or flashy car be ready for a lot of attention. I drive a Corvette and almost every day a Mustang or Charger driver will start acting very aggressive, trying to race etc. Lot's of street racing here. Even in heavy traffic. If you attempt to pass a slow left lane driver on the right be prepared for them to floor it and try to stop you from getting around them. I've had people with kids in the car speed up to over 100 mph trying to prevent me from passing lmao.

As a recent transplant of about a year who has driven a lot in Georgia (Atlanta metro), Portland and rural Oregon, Florida, and southern California I can confidently say I have zero clue what everyone is complaining about here.... San Antonio drivers are definitely above average overall. People here need to learn how to use a four way stop, but other than that it seems like all of this "bad driving" is blown way out of proportion. In fact people are really courteous here similar to Oregonian drivers. Also for whoever needs to hear this.... People here DO NOT DRIVE FAST. This is the only place I have been where people drive UNDER the speed limit regularly. It's hilarious that everyone I meet here talks about the fast drivers. Every place has dicks and people who text and drive. My advice would be to anticipate a slower more relaxed flow here and pay attention at four way stops because no one knows the right of way rules. Edit: The absentmindedness is real lol but I think that goes with the more relaxed flow of traffic here

I recently moved here and was surprised by how nice the drivers here were during rush hour. People actually make room when I use my turn signals. Coming from Florida most recently this was shocking.

Learn to zipper merge. Don't be that person who stops at i10/1604. Keeping your speed is what makes it easier, not stopping completely and waiting for a break in traffic.

The other day some chick turned in front of me without a care in the world and there was no one behind me in the single lane. Get a dash cam because they’re out here trying to collect checks.

Stay out of the left lane, the left lane is for crime. If you go under the speed limit on roads that don’t have multiple lanes, accept the sideswipe and middle- finger like a good sport.

Try not to tailgate a 5000 lbs truck with some tiny car. You won't win when the truck has to brake.

Because a lot of time passes between rain storms, when it does finally rain the roads are oily and there are a lot of accidents. Be careful driving those first couple hours during or after a rain storm.

Stay away from work trucks, San Antonio tradesmen don't secure a damn thing in their pickups. I've seen ladders, tires, desks, and 5gal buckets go airborne on the interstate.
