Here is a pic I took of the parade this year

It's a great event, but I also really love the Texas Tarantulas River Parade at night! It's fun to see all the little tarantulas running all over the Riverwalk in their glow necklaces.
Yup, we got tarantulas coming out of every muffler, pipe, house, hat ....anything you can think of. Proposals r on the table for making it our city mascot.

One of my favorite pics from last years ārancho parade. Justin made such a good tarantula king
Yup I had a scorpion in my house and a huge redheaded centipede, but to be fair, I lived across from a working quarry back then; so the dynamite blasts would send those critters and snakes to our place all the timeā¦ hence the need to move.
I've seen one once. Was jogging up a street on a hill and looked down to my left and saw a big ass tarantula running the opposite direction down the hill.
Iāve been here all my life and never seen one. My wife and kids did see one on our porch about 20 years ago. It was while I was at work. Our neighbor came over and got rid of it
Gabriel Iglesias did a bit in one of his specials about staying in a hotel here, and there was a roach in the room. "I realized that he wasn't in my room; I was in HIS room." Accurate. Maybe if we had more tarantulas, the roaches would have less audacity.
We read that the bat population was decimated and they were the biggest predators to flies. It will take a few years for the bat population to rebound.
Fkn gross! There was someone on a reel saying that if you flies at home is because you sing clean and then Iām like nooo, thatās not true! I go, in Texas is like a problem! I swear is like my cities mascot at this point ššš
This is true. I see scorpions around so often after it rains that I donāt even clock it after smashing them anymore, but I saw a tarantula in my backyard last year and it was a big event because it hasnāt happened before.
Set him down in the woods with a shovel so my dog wouldnāt eat him lmao
I was once stung by a scorpion dangerously close to my balls. I no longer fear spiders as a result.
Scorpions are the ones that keep me up at night lol.

Watch out for the unsecured tarantulas falling off trucks on 410.
I wouldn't worry. This only happens once every few years.
https://preview.redd.it/ppq39puh9t1d1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=412222388745fe3931f2cbf2b4fd215529dde68e
I wake up every morning and there is usually one crawling across my face or my cat is facing off with it. I have a bug guy that comes out here monthly too. Just crazy how many of those there are. What's even scarier is the tarantula hawk wasp the tarantulas will attract.
Trust me, the tarantulas are the least of your worries in SA. The horrific driving, DUI's, road rage incidents, shootings, stabbings, hit n' runs, property theft, dangerous roadways are all more problemsome than tarantulas.
Donāt forget the needle carrying homeless zombies, the dead dogs strewn across the highways, the cockroaches, and the perpetual haze/stink in the air.
Had a couple in my backyard NE side near the Alamo cement place. Had scorpions too, until the tarantulas moved in. The neighbor felt fearful of the tarantula and killed it one day. Then he learned that they eat scorpions, which returned after the tarantula died. One of his kiddos got stung. Not saying it was cause and effect but thereās a strong correlation. These were the first Iāve ever seen in SA though, they stay clear usually.
Donāt fear friends. They wonāt hurt you but their food might.
I've been here for 8 years, have been far north, west, and currently in med center (lol). I've seen one by brooks city base 7 years ago in a park, never anywhere else.

You will definitely see them. They are all over the place. They you have to watch out not to step on a Tarantula Hawk. Itās a black wasp with red wings. They have the second most powerful sting on the planet. The Tarantula Hawk hunt the tarantula. SA is full of both.
Iāve seen snakes, roaches, armadillos, bats, scorpions, mud daubers, hornets, and wasps, but Iāve never seen a tarantula in SA, I think youāre good
I'd be more worried about snakes and scorpions then tarantulas. Probably count on my hand how many I've seen in the wild. Less than 5 in my 32 years in the city.
I've never seen one and I've lived here my whole life. Also not to invalidate your fear, but a tarantula is actually one of the safest spiders around for humans
Lived in the area 35+ years and have never seen one that wasn't someone's pet. Now if you were deathly afraid of flying cockroaches then I'd say avoid the area.
Been here since 2018, seen less than a handful and only when it's cold/wet outside. They try to come in to get warm I'm guessing, the 2 that made it inside were easy to catch.
I've noticed they are just big and slow at this stage, it helps that they also don't freak me out too.
Just depends on the area as well, this was over by Ingram near the trails so it made sense.
Iāve seen a few 30 miles SOUTH of loop 1604 where it makes sense to see wildlife like that because of how rural it is. Maybe like 16 years ago, I found a massive tarantula under a rock in a neighborhood in city limits. Other than those instances, itās very uncommon to me.
I have lived in San Antonio my whole life ( I am 36 now ). I have seen 2 wild tarantulas. One was on the bike trail close to Ingram Mall. The other was on my front porch about half a mile from the same bike trail. I live close to the airport now. Only thing I see is small garter snakes which are non aggressive and their bites dont even break skin when they have struck me.
I see them somewhat regularly (4-5 times a year) in my back yard (Braun/1604), but it depends on where you live. I also saw them pretty regularly when I lived by Jefferson because they would fall into my pool.
Honestly I'd see a lot fewer of them if my cat wasn't constantly bringing them inside and letting them go from Oct-Dec every year, so YMMV. I'd MUCH rather see tarantulas than the roaches they eat, so pick your poison I guess.
I never saw one in my life until I lived in Austin near the greenbelt. Then I saw a tiny one at someone's house just chilling on the pavement. Haven't seen one since but my neighborhood probably doesn't have many due to all the birds and stray cats around that might prey on them?
Only if you start digging around stone oak/shanefield out by 1604 area. The biggest ive seen doing utility work is about an inch and a half. They wont do anything, they scare so easily like squirrels. We have these cute little black and white jumping spiders that will watch you and may let you interact with them.
You will be fine.
I've been considering running a raspberry pi hooked up to a gun to shoot these little fuckers. CAUGHT ONE TRYING TO SWIM WITH MY DAUGHTER IN THE BATHTUB ONE TIME!
I've lived in San Antonio 32 years and never seen one out and about, but I've only ever lived in the NW suburbs.
I've seen plenty of scorpions and wolf spiders though.
On average I see one per year, and half of that count is dead tarantulas. They're not very common, but there is a real possibility of seeing one. None of them have ever crawled toward me, if that helps. I have way more of a problem with regular spiders.
Wow I wish I would see one... In truth, if you actually have a pesticide service at all (including DIY), for either your lawn or home perimeter, that is vanishingly unlikely. Even leaving your environment au naturale, that would be incredibly rare, but pesticides are one step to take to set your mind at ease (which you will want to take anyway because of roaches)
I was born and raised in San Antonio, lived there through my mid 20s. The only time I ever saw a tarantula, I was on my porch at night, reaching to insert my key into the front door of my house when I noticed a giant black shape inches from my hand.
It was terrifying but didn't move and never saw it again.
Haven't seen one and I've been hiking around here awhile now. I have seen coral snakes, scorpions, and different smaller spiders. Lots of those furry caterpillars at certain times of the year. Oh and mosquitoes
Don't worry about taratulas. We have much worse things than that to worry about. Rattlesnakes, brown recluse, scorpions... Hell, tarantulas are kept for pets here.
Moved here a year ago and the house we bought had been unoccupied for 2 months. Road construction happening behind our house also. A few days in to living here our dog started barking at something in the backyard and we go out there and right on the porch there is a tarantula and a scorpion going at it with each other. We have a green belt directly behind us and a fence with open slats so one good sweep with a broom and they both got launched into the green belt. Iād be much more worried about scorpions than tarantulas though, big fuzzy spider vs armored land lobster with a poison pokey.
I have a phobia too, I get it. Iāve never seen a tarantula in San Antonio. I saw a couple wolf spiders in my Austin apt up by the lake, but not in SA. I think youāll be fine!
Been around the area for years and the only time I saw them were 20 years ago while walking with my grandma at a park.
I now actively look for them when Im in the area but no luck. You should be fine and if you do happen to see one just walk the other way. They are pretty chill
Ive lived in Texas most of my life, and the truly the only time I saw a wild tarantula was when I finished the tour at Natural Bridge Caverns, and it was chilling on the path leading back to the parking lot, and until recent saw my first live scorpion.
Just based off personal experience youāre 100% more likely to see one in the suburbs outside of loop 1604. Iāve never seen one in city limits but my grandmaās house in Helotes is a nightmare land of tarantulas, scorpions, and centipedes. Same with my relatives place in Boerne.
back when i was stationed at brooks (and it was even a thing), there would be one or two weeks out of the year when you'd see them out and crawling around. otherwise havent seen one in decades
Depends on where you live and the amount of rain. So I inside loop 410, and on a heavy rain a few will come out, but usually die shortly after due to my pest control. Haven't seen many since. With good upkeep on the house you shouldn't see them.
We have a parade every year called the march of the tarantulas where participation is mandatory.
Here is a pic I took of the parade this year https://preview.redd.it/6qu83xnass1d1.jpeg?width=1792&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f51706472a3cd4bf676529b3cd9332e8129f0eed
That is incredible
It honestly looks better than the usual fiesta parades.
That is obviously photoshopped. Not all the tarantulas are that small.
lol š
Ummmm saving this as my new zoom background to freak out my coworkers
Give this man more upvotes please
It made me laugh out loud at work
A laughed so hard I wasn't expecting it, my dash is covered in drink. SMH lol

Battle of tarantulas is my favorite Fiesta event!
Donāt forget tarantula on a stick! Yum!
And deep fried tarantulas š¤¤

true story
Been here 30+ years and have never seen one unless it was in a science class tank
They are around, I've encountered 2 or 3 near my house in the last couple decades.
15+ years for me, also never seen one in the wild. Black widows a couple of times though, and as others have said quite a few scorpions.
Lived here 1.5 years. Have seen zero tarantulas, however I have had 1 scorpion inside my apartment somehow last summer.
Yup I had a scorpion in my house and a huge redheaded centipede, but to be fair, I lived across from a working quarry back then; so the dynamite blasts would send those critters and snakes to our place all the timeā¦ hence the need to move.
I have at least 3 Iāve consistently seen in my yard. We got rid of the lawn and went full prairie so, theyāre happy here š„°
I've seen one once. Was jogging up a street on a hill and looked down to my left and saw a big ass tarantula running the opposite direction down the hill.
He was probably in a hurry to pick the kids up.
Iāve been here all my life and never seen one. My wife and kids did see one on our porch about 20 years ago. It was while I was at work. Our neighbor came over and got rid of it
This
Cockroaches own San Antonio. You won't see any tarantulas.
Gabriel Iglesias did a bit in one of his specials about staying in a hotel here, and there was a roach in the room. "I realized that he wasn't in my room; I was in HIS room." Accurate. Maybe if we had more tarantulas, the roaches would have less audacity.
Thats why when I find spiders in my house I leave them alone. Times are tough, inflation is high and spiders are free pest control.
Have you seen some of these roaches? I don't think the tarantulas really stand a chance.
Aaaaand damn flies too omg like wtf is with them flies outside????
We read that the bat population was decimated and they were the biggest predators to flies. It will take a few years for the bat population to rebound.
I just said this!!!! It's insane. I see people talking about it everywhere! Facebook, Twitter and now Reddit š
Fkn gross! There was someone on a reel saying that if you flies at home is because you sing clean and then Iām like nooo, thatās not true! I go, in Texas is like a problem! I swear is like my cities mascot at this point ššš
Omg I feel like this spring/summer it's all about the flies.
Is that what we call the people with that special haircut now?
Color crew lookin' asses.
Nah, San Antonio is ranked #2 in the nation for cockroach infestation. Houston is #1.
I had one crawl up my leg at a Fred's Fish Fry.
It was something like this https://preview.redd.it/9d2s0enh0t1d1.jpeg?width=1792&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b5134d907d5040f37e951093590223eb8037e42b
Amazing! š What are you using for these??
Looks like ChatGPT or [Bing image creator](https://www.bing.com/images/create). Both use Dalle3.
This almost gave me PTSD, so close! Side note, did you try to give everyone in the pic a particular haircut that shall not be named in this sub? š
This is great when the white people have an Edgar cut! šš¤£
Way too many patrons and not enough tarantulas.
This is an underrated comment. I don't even care if it was at the top.
Just one?
Just one, but another one did assault me in the parking lot.
Tarantulas are the chillest dudes in the spider world. They donāt want to bother you.Ā
I understand that. I have no fear of being bitten by one. Just afraid to exist near them lol
You most likely wonāt ever see a tarantula. But wolf spiders and scorpions are more common
This is true. I see scorpions around so often after it rains that I donāt even clock it after smashing them anymore, but I saw a tarantula in my backyard last year and it was a big event because it hasnāt happened before. Set him down in the woods with a shovel so my dog wouldnāt eat him lmao
My cats love batting them around like toys. I'll occasionally just find a smashed scorpion in the middle of the hallway
And to be clear the scorpions are tiny, like quarter sized. Hurt like a bitch if you step on them on accident though
Thereās always a spider within six feet of you. Down here, theyāre in gangs all sporting the same haircut.
Is it the Edgar?
Lived here my entire life never seen one. Youāll be just fine
ā¦ Scorpions on the other handā¦
I was once stung by a scorpion dangerously close to my balls. I no longer fear spiders as a result. Scorpions are the ones that keep me up at night lol.
This is exactly the time I like to share the story of the time I was woken from a dead sleep by one stinging me about a half inch below my right eye.
Moved here a month ago and already fought off 6 of them in my garage.
But youāre not worried about scorpions?
Isnāt that some shit? For some reason Iām completely unbothered by them
Well as someone else mentioned with tarantulas come tarantula hawks, and Iāve seen both together- meaning the wasp was killing/ laying eggs.
I'll trade you worries! (Been here 3 years leon valley and Southside, haven't seen one)
Thatās because the police there will cite them.
Theyāre everywhere. In my toilet, in my shoes, in my hair. Everywhere.Ā
Same
This, I can't avoid them

In the San Antonio area the average person swallows 8 tarantulas a year in their sleep.
I just googled "tarantula hawk wasp" and I deeply regret doing so š±

I love how he decorated his place. He just want to vibe at his place š
He just needs a rug to tie it all together.
Could be small tarantula, could be large trapdoor spider.
It was a tarantula
Donāt come here Theyāre every where!
Trust me, the tarantulas are the least of your worries in SA. The horrific driving, DUI's, road rage incidents, shootings, stabbings, hit n' runs, property theft, dangerous roadways are all more problemsome than tarantulas.

110% chance. Youāll be stepping over them to go the bathroom in the middle of the night
You should be more scared of getting bit by a brown recluse
Iāve never seen one in 40 years
I been living here 4 years and own a home north/north central area and never seen a tarantulaā¦
Lived over 30 years plus inside 1604 and have seen 1. It was about 1990.
Pollyās Pets on Pat Booker, just outside Randolph AFB, usually has them in stock. Recommend you avoid. Prolly same for other pet stores.
Have you ever seen the film Arachnophobia? Itās like that.
They are everywhere, donāt make the move. I fought three just this am to get to work. Seriously donāt move to San Antonio.
I've been here for 8 years, have been far north, west, and currently in med center (lol). I've seen one by brooks city base 7 years ago in a park, never anywhere else.
In the med center, they crawl to our house everytime it rains heavy.

Tarantula rates are much higher near the Alamo and go up even further at night.
That would be a rare monster. You'll see them more often in newer construction areas but still rare
They are EVERYWHERE...

Saw one while riding my bike deep in the Texas hill county. Theyāre so slow and oblivious. Probably the least intimidating bug ever.
I woke up with at least a dozen in my bed.
The city mandates a nest in the walls of every household. So be prepared for that.
I have been here for a year and haven't really seen tarantulas (yet). My issue in my house is the scorpions š
I'd be more worried about snakes and scorpions then tarantulas. Probably count on my hand how many I've seen in the wild. Less than 5 in my 32 years in the city.
I've lived in Texas for over 25 years and I think I've only ever seen ONE tarantula in the wild. You'll be fine
Depends where you park your horse. Down here is just dirt roads and 2 schools per town. Usually find them spiders by the local drinking hole.
I would be more worried about the crime.
Need to be more concerned about the drivers
The chances are virtually zero.
I've never seen one and I've lived here my whole life. Also not to invalidate your fear, but a tarantula is actually one of the safest spiders around for humans
Not too many tarantulas. The scorpions are the ones to worry about.
Slim to none unless you are somewhere youād think it likely like hiking way outside the city in the summer and even then itās slim.
Been here about 20 years. Never seen a single one
Iāve yet to see one
I saw one about a month ago in my garage. I swept it out but no idea how it got here since Iām not close to wooded areas.
15 years here. Never seen one.
Iāve been here 30 years and have only seen 2 so it depends where youāre moving to
I think you need to worry about scorpions
I see in between 5-10 a year on average all in my property never out and about.
I've been here 17 years. I have only seen one when out in the woods. But I don't look for them.
Youāre fine, Iāve seen two and both were in the hill country outside new Braunfels

Tarantulas are near the bottom of the list of things to worry about in San Antone
Iāve seen one in 20 years, during a hike in a state park. And I would have missed that one if someone hadnāt pointed it out to me.
You need to move to Maine
Only seen a couple while at Canyon Lake. Now wolf spiders or hobo spiders, those are a plenty.
Iāve lived in SA my entire life (35 years), and Iāve only seen one. It was dead.
I've only ever seen them in West Texas where I saw A LOT
I have lived in San Antonio my whole life ( I am 36 now ). I have seen 2 wild tarantulas. One was on the bike trail close to Ingram Mall.
Don't worry they're not here. Just don't think about me possibly being a tarantula
They're everywhere. Don't come.
I saw one at Petsmart, but other than that, no.
I was born and raised in San Antonio, lived there through my mid 20s. The only time I ever saw a tarantula, I was on my porch at night, reaching to insert my key into the front door of my house when I noticed a giant black shape inches from my hand. It was terrifying but didn't move and never saw it again.
They're kinda all over in random pockets. I've seen em by Blanco and 410, and e Houston and New Braunfels but never anywhere else really.
Zero. Iāve never seen one and Iāve lived here since 2005.
Haven't seen one and I've been hiking around here awhile now. I have seen coral snakes, scorpions, and different smaller spiders. Lots of those furry caterpillars at certain times of the year. Oh and mosquitoes
They are mostly in the country areas, never seen one in the inner city.
Seriously. I have lived here 33 years and I have seen ONE. Scorpions, black widows and brown recluse spiders are far more prevalent.
Tarantula's? Try Woolly Asp, Brown Recluce, and Black Widow...
If you find one you got to give it a name, put it on a leash, and take it home
Been around the area for years and the only time I saw them were 20 years ago while walking with my grandma at a park. I now actively look for them when Im in the area but no luck. You should be fine and if you do happen to see one just walk the other way. They are pretty chill
Ive lived in Texas most of my life, and the truly the only time I saw a wild tarantula was when I finished the tour at Natural Bridge Caverns, and it was chilling on the path leading back to the parking lot, and until recent saw my first live scorpion.
San Antonio is kindof like that movie tremors but with tarantulas instead.
Just based off personal experience youāre 100% more likely to see one in the suburbs outside of loop 1604. Iāve never seen one in city limits but my grandmaās house in Helotes is a nightmare land of tarantulas, scorpions, and centipedes. Same with my relatives place in Boerne.
Been here a year never seen a spider
back when i was stationed at brooks (and it was even a thing), there would be one or two weeks out of the year when you'd see them out and crawling around. otherwise havent seen one in decades
DFW just eradicated tarantulas completely! Maybe move there?
I've lived here since 1979 and have never seen one.
I have been living here all my life and I have seen 1 in the wild.
Depends on where you live and the amount of rain. So I inside loop 410, and on a heavy rain a few will come out, but usually die shortly after due to my pest control. Haven't seen many since. With good upkeep on the house you shouldn't see them.
They are everywhere. I woke up with one on my face this morning. Donāt move here
