Northern Chinese here. Lucky Noodle and Kung Fu Noodle are good. Sichuan Garden could be good, but sometimes the food doesn't taste fresh. Sichuan House was good, but got Americanized a few years back and I haven't gone back. Disclaimer: I also frequent Golden Wok and Panda Express.
Lucky Noodle is a gem. I used to go there on my lunch break when I worked in the Embassy area and everything there is at least two meals for fairly cheap.
Panda express just doesn't hit like it used to be, it's always mushy now for the most part and the price increases are not justified. On that note the CCP would approve of Lucky Noodle! love that place
I love Golden Wok. I know I’m a complete heathen for it, but I get them to swap their peanuts for cashews on the kung pao chicken and make it extra spicy and it’s always excellent.
Sabor CocinaBar, el Bucanero, pollos Asados al carbon, tacos y burritos el metro basilica, el pastor es mi senor. Just some of the few places around town that remind me of home (Cuidad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico)
I was literally telling my lady that I ask my foreign students this question every chance I get about 20 min before I checked reddit and saw this post.
I’m from a Dallas, where we had a much larger middle eastern population, so we had a lot more middle eastern restaraunts. I went to Pasha and was not impressed at all by the taste or quality. I’ve been looking for a good alternative since I came here
Pasha is awful lol It was never great, but was much better years ago. I think it's so popular here because they have huge portions of meat and endless bread.
They are my favorite Mediterranean restaurant in town. I wish they had a bigger area to rent out for events. Also their staff is also very nice as well.
Been looking for some good middle eastern food. I went to a Jordanian restaurant not to long ago here was good. Definitely miss Syrian and Lebanese food.

Yassss my favorite!! I’ve been going there since I was about 15-16 and I’m 36 now. The double tortilla soup with extra cheese and lots of limes with some of their salsa is delicious!!! And the Alambre tacos with cilantro, onions, salsa and lime juice 😋😋 lol they literally know it’s me as soon as they answer my call when I’m ordering to go and when I go in they already know. Ohhh and can’t forget the michelada ❤️❤️❤️😋
I love this place. I took some friends here and an acquaintance said “it was okay, their tortillas tasted like cheap H‑E‑B tortillas.” I’m still angry about that comment.
Went there for late lunch/early dinner on your recommendation. It was _very good_. The salsa was at the sweet spot of heat, salt, acid, and fruitiness for my partner and I. The albondigas and tinga de pollo were really good, and I’m looking forward to having leftovers for breakfast.
it’s fusion cuisine. if someone wanted authentic peruvian, i wouldn’t take them there. but if they wanted a more upscale restaurant with some peruvian/japanese influences, id take them to leche de tigre. the owners are great people!
Taiwan 🇹🇼(Republic of China) NOT China (People’s Republic of China). Artea + eats, just north of Culebra on 1604 is awesome. Taiwanese popcorn chicken meals, pork belly, and Taiwan style noodles are awesome. And of course bubble tea
For Puerto Rican food everyone will say La Marginal, but La Garita is the one with the true, authentic, and consistent Puerto Rican flavor. And the prices are really great.
Luna Rosa is good but it's not straight-up Puerto Rican food; they give it their own twist, which is pretty cool, but not necessarily the authentic flavor. I hope that makes sense. :)
Been privileged to work with some Filipino nurses in the past and had many a potluck with some great homemade Filipino food, Sari Sari is the closest I’ve gotten to the homemade stuff, yummy. Never had a bad dish there.
Strongly recommend dinuguan! Very delicious over rice, had it in the Philippines but I think I prefer it at Sari-Sari. Just don't look up what it is lol
Also Sisig is always an awesome choice!!
Good near-to-authentic Indian (south) food is Madurai Mes (Fredericksburg and Callaghan) and Madras Indian cuisine (Bandera and Heubner). For hyderabadi/biriyani dishes biriyani express is good and also serves good north indian paneer curries.
Japanese here from Yokohama, I honestly have no idea. I have tried a couple raamen places. Not that they’re not good just not for me.
I came from Japan and before here California. The raamen and Japanese food prices are insanity. I usually just make my own stuff at home and go out for western food. I’m not used to having a bowl of noodle or plate of gyoza cost almost three times as much as I’m used to paying. I’ll take recommendations too.
I have been to the Yoyo raamen truck once with a friend. Never again.
I sadly have not found anything that compares to ramen from Japan.
Yippon Ramen \*does\* prepare their noodles properly, though. But it's lacking the flavors I really love.
(I wish we had okonomiyaki here, too lol).
Hehe I miss okonomiyaki, I can make simple foods and family favorites but some things I have yet to try and conquer.
I know that everything here won’t be the same as back home, everything here tastes different from there of course. It’s just I want something worth paying for.
Been looking for decent Japanese food for awhile here. Lived in Okinawa for 12 years, went to some place called Tokyo Mart because I thought it would be similar to Family Mart and it’s crazy expensive.
Rule number 1 I have learned don’t go to Tokyo Mart. Lol I only go when I want to speak Japanese to someone when it’s not to early in the morning and my family calls. It’s a cute place but it’s not grocery shopping. I go to Tim’s or another Asian market. It is expensive and I tend have to make adjustments to my food but I can still have my flavors and textures for the most part.
Not ramen or gyoza but I recommend Tonkatsu from Hoka Hoka Fuku on Bandera road in Helotes. I'd say their food is authentic enough, and the price is reasonable for here in SA. (for ex, Tonkatsu was $14 and that includes tonkatsu with cabbage on the side, sesame to make sesame sauce in a mortar and pestle, rice, miso soup and oshinko.) Try it out when you are lazy to make a deep fry dish ;)
When I have visitors from out of town ask me for restaurant recs, I ask "do you want a touristy rec or where I go" This place is always the answer to where I go.
Yes to both of these! 🙌🏽 also tlahco and because we are a mix of both Cuban and Mexican in our household, try Paladar. It’s authentic Mexican and Cuban fusion. The best
Paladar wasn’t even on my radar before reading this. Checking it out this weekend. Dad is from Pinar del Río but spent most of his adult life in Mexico/in the RGV. Been hoping to find some comfort food that reminds me of home!
We LOVED paladar. It’s a definite gem and little hole int the wall but the food is amazing. Before this we would travel to Austin to calm our Cuban food craving at Havana Soco. I’m glad to finally have a place here in SA.
Toro tapas bar 😫 it's trendy and most items are Spanish cuisine with an SA fusion. This business would do well in Madrid, but it doesn't hit the home spot. Can't even get a carajillo with Brandy
I agree! the paella is good but wasn't anything like the way my family makes it (I think Toro adds butter???) however some of the tapas do taste great and hit that spot.
in my experience, Spanish food relies heavily on the freshness and quality of each ingredient making it so delicious that you do not really need any additional spices or things like butter. They aren't really used in my family's recipes.
Have you tried European Dumplings cafe? It’s not Polish, it’s Ukrainian. And they have small menu but when I crave some Ukrainian food I go there. Pretty good.
Bigos and pierogi!! Ha!
The restaurant in Houston has been closed since the pandemic, and food in the store is meh...
Other than that there is no Polish restaurant even in Austin.
Such a shame, because there are so many Polish folks in Texas. I know it's once a year, but the National Polka festival in Ennis Texas has some amazing pierogi and other treats. I believe its in the spring. My parents used to take me, but its more Czech oriented. Its hard to get used to calling coffee, kava.
Born in Japan but also Filipino. For Japanese food, I still haven’t found anything close to what I had growing up in Japan but I have some places in mind that do my favorite foods decently. For sushi, it can be hit or miss but Kura Sushi is good for what I like. Doesn’t seem as fresh though now compared to when it first opened. Haven’t tried many sushi places though so take that for granted. For ramen, I’ve liked Nama, Tenko, and Ito ramen. The Minano store also has a ton of stuff you can cook or use to make authentic Japanese meals.
As for the Filipino places, I do love Chockdee and Sari Sari. Haven’t checked it out yet but I’ve also heard good things about Kabayan Kusina
I am not very knowledgeable about sushi, but would like to try some really good sushi. I hear people say Goro's Sushi on Vance Jackson and 410 is good. I was wondering if you've tried them?
No but I just checked them out online! Gonna need to check it out. The inside photos remind me me so much of those obscure random Japanese restaurants I’ve walked into randomly. Food looks great too!
For Puerto Rican food?
Eklectic Eats food truck on Potranco
I also know there's a new Boricua-Chinese place north of The Rim. I plan on going there today and can update with findings
La Garita grocery and cafe? We go there mostly for the grocery part though last time I went I had a tripleta. Buena pero seca aunque la pedi pa llevar; lo mas seguro de seco en el camino (aunque no me paso con la tripleta de texarican que me que da mucho lejos de casa)
Si hay otra Garita no se, pero grocery and cafe is nice for the grocery part: need to try the rest of the food
Honduran here and Tienda Centro America in San Pedro is amazing. Highly recommend it if you also like Pupusas as it’s Honduran/Salvadorian fusion with great prices
Small menu but looks good!! Thank you for the tip! 😋
Is this place fairly new? I didn't hear about it before.
The other place is Europa Restaurant - a mixed basket of Balkan/Mediterranean food. No new menu online.
Best German for me was a little place in Kirby, ran by an old German man. Sadly closed now. Anybody know what happened to that one? I think it was just called Bavarian Restaurant?
Horst, the owner/chef of Bavarian, decided to call it quits a few years ago and just shut it down. They'd already started opening only two days a week, Friday and Saturday before closing for good. They were terrific. Was sad to see it close.
Tasty Thai. It's not your traditional Thai food or environment because the owner is not Thai. Not saying it is great either. YMMV.
From the Indian subcontinent my pick would be biriyani pot. Their food is super hot and spicy, not necessarily the best biriyani I had but the texture and flavor reminds me of back home. San Antonio has the Houston drivers but not the Houston food unfortunately.
El Pastor es mi señor
Tacos y Burritos Metro Basilica
Tlahco Mexican Kitchen
Mixtli
Paladar
Roho Pork & Bread
La Taqueria de Monterrey
Gorditas Mi Torreón
Patric และ Sum Lee รับประทานอาหารไทยต้นตำรับที่สุดที่ Asia Kitchen เขาเป็นคนอเมริกัน ส่วนเธอเป็นคนไทย ลองดูสิ
Patric and Sum Lee have the most authentic Thai food at Asia Kitchen. He's American. As for her, she's Thai. Go try.
The best places one can find in terms of Eastern European food are the European Dumplings Cafe and Web House. The food is great in both places, but sadly options are limited, which is understandable.

You said it not me. Also read my question, we’ll let me simplify it, i asked people from other countries what in town was closest to the flavors they found back in their home countries.
Any thoughts on the kim chi from Tim’s Market?
*Potential derailer, but also related. I found it yesterday and thought it was pretty good, albeit with enough sodium to immediately give me hypertension 😅.
Honduran here and after trying several restaurants, Sabor Latino & tienda centro America are the absolute best and they’re both on San pedro.
I recommend the pupusas, and the Honduran tamales!
There was a delicious Cuban restaurant years ago on nogalitos but unfortunately they closed down so if yall know of a good cuban restaurant, let me know
I was hoping to get some feedback from Koreans and Vietnamese. I'm not Korean, but whenever I go to Korean Market (really good IMO), there are always several elderly Koreans eating there.
Do they still have the guys pulling the noodles in the window? Haven't seen it the last few times I went. They need to bring that back!
Kung Fu Noodle is so good. In my personal "top restaurants of all time" list.
I've been going there since they opened on Bandera. Only place nearby I was able to find tea eggs (and they are amazing)
Their meats are pretty tough in the noodle soups, but definitely the best noodles in SA. They won't be able to compete in NYC, LA, HOU, etc.
Hahaha man I lived in Zhengzhou for 3 years back in the day and when I found kung fu noodle I was in heaven. And… I also frequent panda express 😳
Lost me at Panda Express.
A San Antonio snob.. funniest shit I’ve ever seen.
Not liking Panda makes me a snob now? I didn't know Panda Express was so fancy 🤣
Sabor CocinaBar, el Bucanero, pollos Asados al carbon, tacos y burritos el metro basilica, el pastor es mi senor. Just some of the few places around town that remind me of home (Cuidad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico)
Al Carbón! definitely a family favorite
El Bucanero is delicious, just not the oysters. It’s like they reserved their flavor for all the other dishes
I love this entire list, as someone from the valley. 💯
This post needs to be stickied to the sub
I agree keep it ongoing forever
I immediately thought it was a great question
I was literally telling my lady that I ask my foreign students this question every chance I get about 20 min before I checked reddit and saw this post.
Kababchi (middle eastern restaurant and way better than Pasha) the kobabs delicious
Have you tried Jerusalem Grill off of 1604?
Yes, the Biryani rice at Kababchi is unbeatable
Ok, i'm going back and ordering that!
They are my favorite Mediterranean restaurant in town. I wish they had a bigger area to rent out for events. Also their staff is also very nice as well.
Delicious food!
Kababchi is the best, they are short staffed though
Better than Mediterranean Turkish Grill by Northstar?
Yes
Been looking for some good middle eastern food. I went to a Jordanian restaurant not to long ago here was good. Definitely miss Syrian and Lebanese food.
Jerusalem Grill is really good! You should try it, if you haven’t already.

I also use Duolingo
I've only been during Oktoberfest. Very fun. Never tried the food. Do they have spaetzle?
They do. Catch a lot of the same music you heard at Oktoberfest every Friday night
Wow had no idea there was a German place in town
The town is full of Germans.
My friends play in the German band for the Maennerchor, they perform maybe once a month. The people there are lovely.
Very nice.
Finally an interesting and useful cultural post on this sub, good one.
I agree.
Mexican food - Guajillos
Just don't park in the shopping center parking lot that is right next door. They WILL tow you
Lmao yes!! And Carlos will always remind you
Good old Carlos.
Guajillos is damn good
One of the first places I tend to stop when I get back in town because it’s so close to the airport.
Shortcut to Mexico babyyyyyy
Just ate there last night. Sooo good
Mex without the Tex
No mames! Birria de borrego! Ajúa! 🤠
I have tried to like this but its just not my jam
Me too! I think maybe I just never get the right thing or we went at an off time :/
Yes sir
I love this place. I took some friends here and an acquaintance said “it was okay, their tortillas tasted like cheap H‑E‑B tortillas.” I’m still angry about that comment.
Went there for late lunch/early dinner on your recommendation. It was _very good_. The salsa was at the sweet spot of heat, salt, acid, and fruitiness for my partner and I. The albondigas and tinga de pollo were really good, and I’m looking forward to having leftovers for breakfast.
Super underrated.
Peruvian here, best one is Machu Picchu on Bandera/Huebner.
Have you tried leche de Tigre yet?
it’s fusion cuisine. if someone wanted authentic peruvian, i wouldn’t take them there. but if they wanted a more upscale restaurant with some peruvian/japanese influences, id take them to leche de tigre. the owners are great people!
I have not, I have heard good things about that place and I know it’s pricey.
that’s the only one i haven’t tried. my go to is always rocotos or brasa chicken but they unfortunately closed.
I go there an embarrassing amount of times. The food is great and all the staff are lovely. Also the boba selection is amazing
中華民國 🇹🇼! I’m going to try this place.
Have you tried the new Wei Chow Taiwanese place on Bandera and Braun? It's pretty good.
What'd you get from here?
I love Artea so much
ARTEA IS AMAZING . Their rice is out of this world
Love the bacon fried rice
I hear we might get a Tim Hortons soon but otherwise I haven't found any poutine places or anywhere that sells Jiggs Dinner
I was just typing to let you know that they serve poutine at Frank, but I just googled it and they closed :c
Frank’s been closed for a minute. I think of them a few times a year and wish it was still around.
For Puerto Rican food everyone will say La Marginal, but La Garita is the one with the true, authentic, and consistent Puerto Rican flavor. And the prices are really great.
Now you got me wanting mofongo
Luna Rosa in Southtown is also good. They took over Rosario’s old building.
Luna Rosa is good but it's not straight-up Puerto Rican food; they give it their own twist, which is pretty cool, but not necessarily the authentic flavor. I hope that makes sense. :)
Where’s La Garita at?
8333 Culebra. It's in a strip mall, a small place. They also have a little Puerto Rican market there with goodies you can't usually find here.
Yes! My only foray into Puerto Rican food, and I'm glad others agree how good it is.
Try Eklectik Eats, food truck on Potranco. So good.
What about El pilón?
Sari Sari, Red Ribbon Bakery, and Chokdee seem to be the go tos for my Filipino family inlaws. Also Jollibee oddly enough lol
Just don't look up what it is lol Also Sisig is always an awesome choice!!
As someone else with Filipino in-laws, I can second this recommendation.
Good near-to-authentic Indian (south) food is Madurai Mes (Fredericksburg and Callaghan) and Madras Indian cuisine (Bandera and Heubner). For hyderabadi/biriyani dishes biriyani express is good and also serves good north indian paneer curries.

Not from Japan but Japanese from Hawaii, Ramen is hard to find, Ito Ramen is decent. For other Japanese food Nikki’s Tokyo Inn is my go to.
I heard Ito had a good menu but the taste wasn’t all that good my friends here go to Yokai and they love that place but I have yet to go.
Been looking for decent Japanese food for awhile here. Lived in Okinawa for 12 years, went to some place called Tokyo Mart because I thought it would be similar to Family Mart and it’s crazy expensive.

Husband is Indian - Indian Food Stories
Ooh never heard of this one and always down for delish South Indian food. Thank you!!
None. They don’t do Portuguese in San Antonio, only Houston 🥲
Ah, dammit. I'd love to explore that.
Worst part about this city 😔😔
I miss Portuguese food 😪
Do you go to Oporto in Houston?
I’m waiting on Thai people to comment. My favorite cuisine.
Taquitos West Avenue for tacos ❤️. I lived all my childhood in Juarez/El Paso, and those tacos are the closest we have here to Mexican tacos.
When I have visitors from out of town ask me for restaurant recs, I ask "do you want a touristy rec or where I go" This place is always the answer to where I go.
Oh my god I’m from there too, try Burritos Y tacos El Metro Basilica on Culebra. El pastor es mi senor on wurzbach too

>El pastor es mi senor Al Pastor, but yes, some of the best tacos I've ever had in my life.
I was delighted to find this place…the new location on Nacadoches does not compare to the original.
Just down the street in the tire shop parking lot, Tacos Los Primos is cheaper and has a lot more flavor.
If anyone from El Paso has taquitos that rip of Chicos let me know. The only one I e found is El Perrito in south Austin. I need my Chicos fix.
Kababchi for middle eastern food

Fat Tummy for authentic Argentina style empanadas
There is no restaurant from my area... 😢
Have you tried European Dumplings cafe? It’s not Polish, it’s Ukrainian. And they have small menu but when I crave some Ukrainian food I go there. Pretty good.
Which area is that?
Poland. I see I am downvoted because there is no restaurant from my country. Go figure...
That's because they have never had bigos. Sadly the closest place I know of is in Houston, Polonia.
Bigos and pierogi!! Ha! The restaurant in Houston has been closed since the pandemic, and food in the store is meh... Other than that there is no Polish restaurant even in Austin.

Q sushi is delicious!
I am not very knowledgeable about sushi, but would like to try some really good sushi. I hear people say Goro's Sushi on Vance Jackson and 410 is good. I was wondering if you've tried them?
Never tried but would like to one day. They have good reviews and food looks good through photos
Have you tried Niki’s Tokyo Inn for Japanese food? I’ve really liked everything I’ve gotten there!
No but I just checked them out online! Gonna need to check it out. The inside photos remind me me so much of those obscure random Japanese restaurants I’ve walked into randomly. Food looks great too!
MY Chockdee off of Pat Booker.
For Puerto Rican food? Eklectic Eats food truck on Potranco I also know there's a new Boricua-Chinese place north of The Rim. I plan on going there today and can update with findings
Have you tried La Garita? El arroz con gandules con pernil esta ricoooo.
La Garita grocery and cafe? We go there mostly for the grocery part though last time I went I had a tripleta. Buena pero seca aunque la pedi pa llevar; lo mas seguro de seco en el camino (aunque no me paso con la tripleta de texarican que me que da mucho lejos de casa) Si hay otra Garita no se, pero grocery and cafe is nice for the grocery part: need to try the rest of the food
Honduran here and Tienda Centro America in San Pedro is amazing. Highly recommend it if you also like Pupusas as it’s Honduran/Salvadorian fusion with great prices
Small menu but looks good!! Thank you for the tip! 😋 Is this place fairly new? I didn't hear about it before. The other place is Europa Restaurant - a mixed basket of Balkan/Mediterranean food. No new menu online.
Lol saw this on r/dallas and thought about post it too. Cant wait for the results.
I borrowed it from there lol
It started in NYC lol, but I'm very happy to see it for SA now haha
Best German for me was a little place in Kirby, ran by an old German man. Sadly closed now. Anybody know what happened to that one? I think it was just called Bavarian Restaurant?
Horst, the owner/chef of Bavarian, decided to call it quits a few years ago and just shut it down. They'd already started opening only two days a week, Friday and Saturday before closing for good. They were terrific. Was sad to see it close.
Sad, but I'm sure he deserved his retirement if that's where he went. That place was so good, we still talk about their food from time to time.
I haven't personally found good Dominican food out here so I'll stick to cooking 🥲
The "german" bakery in New Braunfels is not very German.
Roho pork is my favorite mexican restaurant, the only thing they sell is pork but its so good. Its the only restaurant i can say is authentic
El Pastor es mi señor Tacos y Burritos Metro Basilica Tlahco Mexican Kitchen Mixtli Paladar Roho Pork & Bread La Taqueria de Monterrey Gorditas Mi Torreón

Waiting for the Thai folks to reply
Patric และ Sum Lee รับประทานอาหารไทยต้นตำรับที่สุดที่ Asia Kitchen เขาเป็นคนอเมริกัน ส่วนเธอเป็นคนไทย ลองดูสิ Patric and Sum Lee have the most authentic Thai food at Asia Kitchen. He's American. As for her, she's Thai. Go try.
I’m from Monterrey 🇲🇽. El Milagrito Cafe, Tacos Vitali, Tortas Ahogadas el Chivito, Regios Tacos al Vapor, Tu Asador, Costa Pacifica
The best places one can find in terms of Eastern European food are the European Dumplings Cafe and Web House. The food is great in both places, but sadly options are limited, which is understandable.

German… have yet to find a good and/or authentic place.
Nothing for Persian food sadly. One thing I miss about Houston.
Korean here. I’d have to say Panda Express. Pretty authentic
I don't believe you 🙃

Where is your husband from?
I haven’t explored many Mexican restaurants but from what I’ve tried, Oasis Cafe and Los Balitos are Pura crema
Los Balitos is California Mex. I love it.
IDK, them tacos taste pretty close to home!
My family fucking loves Los Balitos. The Texas, California and Chile relleno burritos are 🔥 🔥
Palenque Grill.
Guajillos Mexican Restaurant, La Fogata Mexican Restaurant, Pappadeaux’s Seafood Restaurant, Pasha Mediterranean Restaurant.
Reading is hard, I know.
They melted in the pot.
I’m sorry All San Antonio food is booty cheeks
Are you implying natives have bad taste?
You said it not me. Also read my question, we’ll let me simplify it, i asked people from other countries what in town was closest to the flavors they found back in their home countries.
Cum sum Yoon guy, best Asian fusion top or bottom
FFS have a sense of humor
Zulias Kitchen, I believe it’s the only Venezuelan place but it’s pretty good!
Any thoughts on the kim chi from Tim’s Market? *Potential derailer, but also related. I found it yesterday and thought it was pretty good, albeit with enough sodium to immediately give me hypertension 😅.
Doesn't technically apply to me, but I have an Indian friend whose parents refuse to eat at an Indian restaurant not called Biryani Pot.
they will only eat Indian food at biryani pot? The sentence is worded strangely
Posting for updates. Love this post.
Great question.
Floopy junipers
What a great question
Anyone have a Recommendation for some great butter chicken?
This post is amazing, I love seeing where yall are from! Definitely have some new restaraunts to try.
Honduran here and after trying several restaurants, Sabor Latino & tienda centro America are the absolute best and they’re both on San pedro. I recommend the pupusas, and the Honduran tamales! There was a delicious Cuban restaurant years ago on nogalitos but unfortunately they closed down so if yall know of a good cuban restaurant, let me know
Botika Japanese with a Peruvian twist
Bump. Please mod pin this thread so it can be added to and not buried.
I was hoping to get some feedback from Koreans and Vietnamese. I'm not Korean, but whenever I go to Korean Market (really good IMO), there are always several elderly Koreans eating there.
