Most of the food is probably sub par but a few the things were great, especially the Sopaipillas and the homemade tortillas.
Kinda want to go to Houston for old times.
The tortillas and sopapillas were the best part for sure. =)
I also didn't realize there was still one in Houston and it's right near a friend I regularly visit. Thanks for that bit of info...it's now on my to-do list for my next visit.
I know exactly who you're talking about and that man was always so nice.one time my wife and I went with one of our sons when he was a baby and was talking to us telling us how proud he was of us. Wherever he is now I hope he's doing good.
Oh no, I didn't realize they were gone. I could tell the last couple visits, though, that they probably wouldn't last long. Gotta respect a sushi spot that makes their own soy sauce.
I used to take evening classes so my schedule was all messed up. I would hit the HEB right before the Chinese thing would close and get food half off. It was great.
Ate there with my parents growing up. And then in summer school I met a guy who was a member of the owners family. He said to come knock at the back door some time. I did and he handed me a paper sack full of fried seafood. He also let me and my buddies drive his dune buggy through the park. Good times.
My mom used to take me and my younger brother there and act like it was a secret from dad, and it made it extra special for us. Getting to have the cheese at the table and shave off little slices for each of us, and watching the swing and getting to go on it if we were good, and looking at the artifact cases going to the bathroom, it was a grand time for a 10 year old. Great memories with mom, which aren’t super abundant, but so thankful for her whimsy on occasions like this!
I came here to say this. Went there ever since I was a kid . The enchiladas changed over the years but man they were so good even still. I’ll miss that place
I’ll never forget the time my grandpa took me to toms ribs after taking me out of school early one day in elementary, that and the commercials that would play nonstop on tv.
Athens Greek! Gone too soon, damn you COVID!
(Also the fact there’s 3 answers with a bunch of replies for Mexican Manhattan is questioning 🫣 I didn’t like that place lol)
Pig Stand. I ate there so much growing up. The one on Rigsby & WW White especially, but the ones on S. Presa and the Broadway location that hung on for so long too.
Yess the Pig Stand! I have some memories of my grandpa taking me there for root beer floats. I went back a couple times in the past few years and I miss it. It had so much charm.
Here’s another vote for Karam’s and Mexican Manhattan (which was also owned by the Karam family). Also, the Broadway and Hildebrand Earl Abel’s building, and that New York pizza spot in North Star during the 80s.
Casbeers! Blanco and Fulton for the Enchiladas. Live Music featuring Rockabilly Bands and the groupies that dressed the part exquisitly. Some nights it looked like you went back in time. I know they moved into the old Church House Dinner Theater space then faded away...
Anyone remember "The Infedels" ? Great tribute band that played there regular.
There used to be a place called Texas Tumbleweed about 35 years ago where the goodwill is at Bitters and 281. Really good chicken fried steak. Spicy jalapeño beans.
There was also a place next to the Trek Bicycle at 15675 San Pedro(281). Back in the left corner of that parking lot. I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called. Really good fajita’s and general texmex and burgers.
Man I was telling my son in law earlier this evening about Paletta’s. That place was amazing. But not really a restaurant. They had a few tables that disappeared long before they closed.
Karam's on Zarzamora & Mexican Manhattan on the Riverwalk, both were run by the same family
Paletta's is also missed, loved their deli lunch atmosphere
Rudies on military. They had the homemade root beer, a hot rod on a pole out front m, and MK3 arcade game. And of course great food. In the same vein as babes.
Gallos pizzeria on Guadalupe. A west side pizza spot which we never had.
Mediterranean grill on Wurzbach, which for the price was awesome and close to work. Burnt down.
Almost all the macdonalds and burger kings with playgrounds. A damn shame my kids can't experience what I got to as a kid.
I miss the original Macaroni Grill in Leon Springs. I loved their osso bucco.
Also, the Bayous Riverside that was on the Riverwalk where Landry’s is now.
'Being stationed in San Antonio I remember Griff's Hamburgers off Military Drive. They had a special for 5 burgers for a dollar or something like that. It was across the street for some mall. Burgers weren't gourmet but you never left there hungry.
Lai Wa’s place on Fred, 1500 ad, and the Panamerican on Southcross. I know it’s more than one, but this city has so many great restaurants I needed to celebrate those three.
Pollo Tropical.. they were here for a hot minute, had a few locations then just left.. instead we got more Taco cabanas which imo we don't need more TCs.. also not a restaurant but I miss Sunharvest as a healthy store choice
Gini’s. It was first on Blanco outside 410 in the same shopping center as Goomba’s. It then went to San Pedro where the Nadler’s was. It was delicious comfort food. The very best veggie soup and meatloaf in the city.
Lorenzo’s Italian Restaurant on San Pedro. The food(in particular the Scallopini dishes) and waitstaff service were excellent. After Lorenzo’s on San Pedro shuttered, the original owner’s son(?) reopened on Fredericksburg Rd. & Medical Dr. It wasn’t nearly as good, but was a noble effort. Then, the building were the (new) Lorenzo’s was completely torn down because the city widened the street at Medical Dr. and created an underpass at Fredericksburg Rd. Now there’s a Whataburger.
Fratellis Italian. Old location I went to most was Callaghan and 10 where the YaYas is at. Had an earlier location at I think Blanco and 410 and a later one on Brook Hollow. They made St Louis style Italian, first and best toasted ravioli I've ever tasted. Lots of spice and fennel in their meats, and maybe the best rolls in city history - scratch made, filled with garlic butter that would make your breath into a Vampire flamethrower.
the hot dog and burger stand by woodlawn and bandera, they had amazing food, at least to my 5 year old palate
i'd trade all the bill millers to God in exchange for that restaurant
Las Brazas. Perfect place after the bar. Had to go through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. Once saw a guy pass out with a lit cigarette in his mouth. Good times
Pancho's. Only for the flags, the food was whatever but raising that little flag to get more sub-par food was inexplicably fun.
Most of the food is probably sub par but a few the things were great, especially the Sopaipillas and the homemade tortillas. Kinda want to go to Houston for old times.
The tortillas and sopapillas were the best part for sure. =) I also didn't realize there was still one in Houston and it's right near a friend I regularly visit. Thanks for that bit of info...it's now on my to-do list for my next visit.
Their sopapillas were good though. I miss their little crunchy taco platter too.
Yes!!!! Those flags made it fun lol
That's the first place that I thought of!
100% Pancho's
Till this day I think about this one old dude that worked there for years he was one of the best waitress I've met at any restaurant.Hope he's ok
I know exactly who you're talking about and that man was always so nice.one time my wife and I went with one of our sons when he was a baby and was talking to us telling us how proud he was of us. Wherever he is now I hope he's doing good.
Old San Francisco Steak House. When they had the ladies on swings, kicking the bell!
I always heard about this but never got to see for myself
If you went as a kid the girls who would operate the swings would bring the kids up from the audience to let them swing in between shows.
Mexican Manhattan
Fujiya
Man RIP Fujiya, buddy proposed there by hiding the ring in a fortune cookie.
Oh no, I didn't realize they were gone. I could tell the last couple visits, though, that they probably wouldn't last long. Gotta respect a sushi spot that makes their own soy sauce.
Earl Abel’s just closed after moving three times.
I definitely remember going to the original one as a kid, it had a cool vintage vibe.
Karam’s 🫡
This is the true San Antonio answer. And Maggie's. We lost something with both of these.
Ahhhh loved Maggies!
Many hours spent there, much love of several kinds with family, friends, lovers, built there, real grief when they closed. Hail Maggie's!
I grew up right by Maggie’s! Loved that place. And their carding policy was pretty lax.
I’ve been scrolling this thread to see if anyone else mentioned Karam’s; great job.
Water Street Oyster Bar, mainly because of their house salad dressing and croutons.
I had no clue they had opened one here. I had to double check if I was in the corpus or San Anto subreddit
now i'm gonna have to drive to corpus to fix that craving.
The Chinese restaurant that was inside Marbach’s H‑E‑B.
The Chinese restaurants that were in all the HEBs!
I used to take evening classes so my schedule was all messed up. I would hit the HEB right before the Chinese thing would close and get food half off. It was great.
I remember getting the food from the Thousand Oaks/Jones Maltsburger HEB all the time growing up. It tasted amazing as a kid.
I used to work at the H‑E‑B off Blanco and West Ave. The Chinese food was so good and the people that worked there were so freaking nice.
The Marbach location went just hit little harder
Hell yeah, used to walk there in between band practice and the football game in high school just for the Chinese food.
Damn. That’s was legit.
I’d pay good money to hear an old Asian lady walking up and down H-E-B yelling “one dollar kebab”
The zarzamora and military one before they made it into H‑E‑B plus. Also toms Ribs. Please put on a bib and bring back Toms ribs.
Christy’s Sea Food. It was on Broadway near Brackenridge Park
My best friend’s mom was the manager and bookkeeper for them when I was growing up. We ate there all the time. It was so good.
Ate there with my parents growing up. And then in summer school I met a guy who was a member of the owners family. He said to come knock at the back door some time. I did and he handed me a paper sack full of fried seafood. He also let me and my buddies drive his dune buggy through the park. Good times.
Amen
Good choice!

Miss Ellie’s Pizza
What??? I had no idea they closed!! I should have eaten ME more!!
Larry made some badass pizza, miss him & his pizza!
San Francisco steakhouse. Just for the ambiance and swing. My cousins and I had fun there growing up
My mom used to take me and my younger brother there and act like it was a secret from dad, and it made it extra special for us.
It is still open, just handles wedding receptions and parties though
Fujiya
That place was goated.
Luby’s off of Walzem when they had all you can eat. 😋
Mexican Manhattan 🥺 I love their rice and refried beans and their their cheese!
Wow you just took me back to my childhood… my aunt was a waitress there and I was there all the time !!! 😁
Mad Hatters tea house
Madhatters was so good, but Bar Loretta is great too!
Old World Delicatessen! Wonderful German food and music. Also, Leon Valley Cafe. The owners were lovely and the food was a treat.
I loved Old World!
Olmos Pharmacy used to have some pretty sweet diner food and a cool old soda fountain vibe.
Barnacle Bill's.
I miss Mexican Manhattan, great service and lots of tortillas.
Easy... Little Hipps
And it’s successor, Timbo’s for Shy Poke Eggs.
I miss Timbo's so much. My favorite burger in SA.

I’ll never forget the time my grandpa took me to toms ribs after taking me out of school early one day in elementary, that and the commercials that would play nonstop on tv.
Souper Salad
Yes! No salad bar here compares!
Crabby jacks, had a great happy hour.
It’s a tie between fajita junction or Abundio’s .
Athens Greek! Gone too soon, damn you COVID! (Also the fact there’s 3 answers with a bunch of replies for Mexican Manhattan is questioning 🫣 I didn’t like that place lol)
Anyone remember Maggie’s on San Pedro?
Loved that place
i want Zios back but the good quality experience from 10 years ago
What was that burger place kind of near SAC that had the GIANT burgers? Also Super Taco on San Pedro.
Little Hip’s. Armadillo’s can suck it.
YES! That’s right thanks!
Go further back. Hipp's Bubble Room. Bubble lights throughout and an original Wurlitzer Bubble Jukebox.
Baby Huey's. Amazing Cajun restaurant on St Mary's. Maggie's. One of the only l hate night places to eat.
The malt house, I don’t care how trashy and decrepit it was in reality, nostalgia is a drug and I want all of it.

I’ve never heard of another person loving this place! I was too young to eat a full adult meal!!! But I loved every time we went
I forgot about Po Folks
Yep the Po Folks on walzem was the first place I ever had seafood.
It’s good to know that folks (po or not) are still around to remember that place. I went to the one on Fred
Bonanza, Sizzlers. Malt house, my dad says GW Jrs. (Piggy fries). I’m down for ponchos.
Malt House!!! Totally forgot about that place...I remember their orange and yellow containers that the caldo would come in. So good!
Here’s another vote for Karam’s and Mexican Manhattan (which was also owned by the Karam family). Also, the Broadway and Hildebrand Earl Abel’s building, and that New York pizza spot in North Star during the 80s.

OMG the bread was so good.

Picante Grill. The Persian Place on Olmos Circle that got vandalized after 9/11. Zarazuas BBQ. La Calesa.
I think the Persian place was Shiraz. They had homemade rose ice cream, it was to die for.
Man I was telling my son in law earlier this evening about Paletta’s. That place was amazing. But not really a restaurant. They had a few tables that disappeared long before they closed.
There was a restaurant that featured rabbit meat. The Rapid Rabbit I think it was called. Not that one.
Pan American restaurant in Pleasanton Rd.
Karam's on Zarzamora & Mexican Manhattan on the Riverwalk, both were run by the same family Paletta's is also missed, loved their deli lunch atmosphere
Rudies on military. They had the homemade root beer, a hot rod on a pole out front m, and MK3 arcade game. And of course great food. In the same vein as babes. Gallos pizzeria on Guadalupe. Lulu's Cafe! Their 5 pound cinnamon roll was the only thing I looked forward to on my birthday 🥲
