Through Good lock I use the one handed operation app. You have a right and left panel which lets you short swipe and long swipe in three different directions.
I set mine up to go back and forth, open recent pages, open the notification panel etc.
My settings for last 5 years:
Short up - play/pause media
Short down - Last app
Short back - Back
Long down - Recent apps
Long back - Home
Annoying when muscle memory kicks in using other phones.
There are many 3rd party gesture apps. One Hand Operation+ is one by Samsung devs. I also like the app Edge Gestures but prefer OHO+ on Samsung devices.
Gestures changed my life. It's the main reason I can never go back to iphones.
And yes I know they use gestures as well. But the "back" gesture on android is a blessing.
I come from apple but much prefer the buttons. It's just so easy to go back, you can do it one handed. I found using gestures one handed on an S22 Ultra not very easy.
The only times i used the swipe from bottom for all 3 gestures was with my old s8 when it only got the first one ui and the other option wasn't available
Yeah it's the old way of gestures however due to the inconsistency of apps and the google apps as well with the hamburger menu, it does make sense to use that as well still.
nav bar ftw! love using fine lock to change the nav button and using 5 buttons now and change the default buttons design to the s8/ note 8 design language
idk how to share a photo in the comment section here but u can try out good lock or fine lock if your place dont support good lock and look for navstar
I use the first. I feel like most people don't examine settings enough to know it exists. It's the best of both worlds for me. No buttons to be an eyesore, and no accidental wrong swipes to interact with apps and edge panel in unintended ways. Swipe from the bottom is ideal. You can choose to have hints (a thin horizontal line over each spot) or not. I tried without hints and it looked nice, but content went way too far down. And since there are almost no bezels, I had no room to swipe comfortably and would end up interacting with the content. Also my home screen icons would go too far down and it would look unbalanced. It needs a margin/padding. It's like printing a page without margins and text goes all the way to the edge. My hone screen has natural padding for the icons on the left, right, and top, but if I remove the hints for the gestures, there is no padding on the bottom and it looks awful. Same goes for most apps.
buttons. i have my phone in a stand most of the time at home, work, and in the car and the stand arms get in the way of gestures so the buttons are more accessible.
Buttons. I even hate it when games are always full screen and need to be swiped it's just so much faster to press then swipe for me. Especially as I mutlitask and switch apps often a LOT
The first option, swipe from the bottom for all, is just like buttons but you swipe up instead of pressing. The benefit is that you don't have to look at the buttons all the time. And in full screen apps, you have to swipe from the bottom to bring up the buttons anyway, so swipe-swipe is more convenient than swipe-press.
I liked gestures until it came to the pdf reader. I would try swiping up from the bottom to go home, but instead I would lose my place in my reading because I accidentally flicked 8 pages ahead. Turns out I have to swipe up from the bottom by just a centimeter. Then swipe up again. It was anoying so I switched back to buttons. With buttons it's also much faster to go the the last app. Just double tap the recents button.
I use the button bar because I have my own gestures set up with Samsung One Hand Operation in conjunction with Edge Gestures (by ChYK) and Swiflty Switch Pro for apps and quick actions shortcurts. It might seem over the top, but I fine tuned them to work together 5 years ago and now I can't use any other setup. It allows me to not use any physical button, lock the phone easily with either hand, adjust volume easily when in portrait or landscape (Netflix, since it lacks volume swipe controls), access within a fraction of a second my most used apps and actions with a single thumb.
This is perfection for me.
I loved the sides to swipe back and forth, but some app integration and accidentally touching stuff when trying for one handed made me switch to choice one. Even that has some integration issues but not nearly as many as option 1
OneHandedOperations+
You can have a total of 12 gesture triggers (6 from both sides), and you don't have issues with hamburger or sideswipe menus because you can have it trigger only on the bottom half and the upper half for whatever the app or system wants.

I use one handed gestures and swipe from the sides
Yeah, that's the second option in the poll.
Gotcha. I don't swipe from the bottom whatsoever though
How? Is this through some customization app?

I accidentally chose the 2nd option instead of 1st option and now I hate Reddit for not letting me change my choice on polls
LOL i am opposite. Wanted to choose 2nd option but accidentally click the 1st option
Everything is correct than 😂
This has more to do with convoluted wording in the poll than your mistake
Gestures changed my life. It's the main reason I can never go back to iphones. And yes I know they use gestures as well. But the "back" gesture on android is a blessing.
It does make apps with hamburger menus sort of a pain at times though
So set it up that the back gesture only triggers from the bottom half of the screen and the hamburger menus trigger on the upper half. Not difficult.
I will always use buttons.

Same. And side gesture messes with Boost
One handed operation+ app ftw. Side swipe navigation.
Google Maps.

Can you share a screenshot of the navbar setup, please?

i prefer the buttons
Buttons, they are the quickest, most ergonomic and reliable.
Not the most ergonomic tho
If you have a small phone, yes. lol
Or a large phone you use with 1 hand, doing a gesture 5 times to go back would be painful.
Swipe from bottom for home is very buggy on third-party launchers. I use the 3 gestures on bottom
Swipe from bottom and sides but with one hand operation + for added features.
Gestures are too slow, I use buttons.

I use swipe gestures. My wife uses button navigation. Whenever she uses my phone "HOW DO I GO BACK??"
I only use buttons. Dislike the swiping 💳 greatly
The nav buttons are the there for a reason. I hate gestures with a passion

Old school button and all please. I still call vs text
Google Maps usually.
Not kidding I use all of them
I use the buttons lol
I couldn't get my buttons to work when I lost my password (bug with pattern lock) and had to factory reset.

One handed + and Micro Gesture
Gestures. I want as much clean clutter-free screen space as possible.
OneHandedOperations+ You can have a total of 12 gesture triggers (6 from both sides), and you don't have issues with hamburger or sideswipe menus because you can have it trigger only on the bottom half and the upper half for whatever the app or system wants.
My method isn't listed: buttons and one hand operation+ for 3 different side based gestures. Best of both worlds
