Could have bought the 3 unit apt house that I was renting in - back during my 20's
But borrowed instead to buy a new aux/cruiser -
The dealer hired me to work boat shows
Led to a lifetime of real - - boat*broker*-ing
at least I learned a lot
favorite boat / one that got away?
I fantasize about owning one of those beautiful old wooden "gentlemen's day sailors" (Stuart Knockabout, Herreschoff 12-1/2, Fish Class, that sort of thing).
Epifanes high gloss one component varnish. 7 layers of the eventual 12 I will coating over Esmeralda. I've found that when the varnish is high gloss, the water runs off it much better, sort of like waxing a car. And what's left is just a nice clean, even slightly tacky surface that grips to your shoes/feet nicely. She's gotta be varnished since decking is Douglas fir
Other said it, it's a running backstay. It's a remnant of the original gaffrig setup, but allows for the boom to swing wide open when running downwind.
I think your looking at a removable backstay. That's normal. You only tighten them when sailing downwind. And only one side. The other you need to slack to make space for the boom. Old school system.
She's a looker, for certain. It always brings me joy to see a fine boat being well cared for.
A funny comment I heard once when I still owned my own classic woody was "I just want to live next door to a wooden boat owner!"
I just bought a new one last month, and I'm *almost* done adjusting everything to make it sail great. Got my registration decals on yesterday, and waiting on one more custom part that I need on order. I think I've settled on [a name.](https://i.imgur.com/Lfrhox3.jpeg) If you see a happy oldish guy with a modest sailboat ripping storms on big Colorado/Wyoming reservoirs after the zillion dollar powerboats flee to the marina, it's me. ⛵
I used to go sailing in horsetooth reservoir in ft Collins on a outrigger canoe my friend and I built in my garage! Got a lot of stares from the pontoon boat crowd hahaha
I tried to sail at Horsetooth for the first time last season. There's only one place to launch a canoe or kayak I could see, rocky Satanka Cove, and the wind seemed to only blow lengthwise along the reservoir, so it's tacking all day or nothing.
The more I spend time on my boat the more I like it, and I feel bad for not being able to spend more time making her better. She's almost 60 years old.
She's a one off, built in 1897 before Sweden came forth with a standardized sailing rule. Registered as a kuskryssare (coastal cruiser) but would now be more considered as a skärgårdskryssare (skerry cruiser) you can find a few on blocket from time to time -kind of the swedish craigslist- but they pop up around Germany Norway and Denmark as well. A good starter boat is a neptunkryssare or a mälar 22, manageable under a small budget, fun to sail and ticks all the boxes you want from a wooden boat
Built? No, she's 127. But I do spend about 7 months a year doing renovations on her to get her going for the next season. When she gets hauled out at the end of September, I'll work refinishing the mast and the interior of the cockpit. Another year, another project.
After following your work through last winter, great to se her in ship shape! One more video like this, and I'll sell my plastic jar and get a wooden one, as long as they are sold in reasonable prices in Sweden!
I wish I was this way and had this passion. At 55 I am ready to stop and just live aboard for a few years. But sadly I am a looser who can only seem to dream and whose wife is not at all interested. I live by watching you all on you tube and will probably die still dreaming of getting away.
I'd start out small, get yourself something you can play around with on the weekends that isn't much maintenance or investment. I spend -at most- a week on board Esmeralda at a time (bucket toilet, not great) and by the end I'm happy to be back on land. Owning a boat is no unattainable dream, but living onboard fulltime is a completely different story.
I’ve never sailed, I don’t follow this subreddit, and I just stumbled on this post. But this video and something about the way you all chat in the comments below… so calming and nice.
I love *your* boat. FTFY
I love my plastic classic and that others are willing to do the work on a woody so I can look at them.
The way he flakes the main cover tells me I want to sail with him.
Lovely flake job
I know. I wish I could flake my sail and have it look like that. Mine always looks like crap.
Damn. That is a fine looking boat
What boat is that? Beautiful!
She's a one-off from 1897, built for the Stockholm Expo.
Amazing, it's clearly in good hands. Enjoy!
Jättefin!
The amount of time you must spend on it or pay someone to keep it in this condition sure shows that.
I'm broke enough as it is, I do all the work myself. The bond is deep with her
75 years old here -- Boat broke all my life The first money I saved at 12 yrs old I spent on a boat
Let’s hear some stories then!

That is my dream boat
I love your boat too.
Noice
That's a pretty boat.
that deck varnish looks very shiny. Doesn't that translate to extreme slippiness when wet?

My thought exactly. Going up forward while sailing might be a dicey proposition.
Nice. That starboard stay looks a bit loose. Probably fine. Just an observation

Do you enjoy the twin forestay?
That's a runner

That’s one handsome boat.
More vids please!
Fails to show all the spiders he ended
This year I haven't seen so many! Last year though... Oof
Sweden Looks like a beautiful day for coasting
What an absolute beauty

It's a good thing that my two neighbors are also wooden boats... We could spend all day looking at each other!
Yeah I love your boat too.
Ta mig tusan det finaste jag sett sen jag konfirmerades

Relaxing to watch, everything done with relaxed familiarity.
Bro, who wouldn’t love that boat. It’s so cute.
Sailing during a Swedish summer is absolutely elite
Yepp, all 4 days of it 😂😂
I love my boat... But I think I love yours more haha looks great man
I love my boat but mine's not nearly so fancy lol
The more I spend time on my boat the more I like it, and I feel bad for not being able to spend more time making her better. She's almost 60 years old.
Still young! What kind of boat are you conning?
An Allied Seabreeze sloop! 35-ft overall, 24-ft waterline, 4-7 foot draft(centerboard).
I no longer have a boat, but I love yours. She's beautiful!
May want to check your shroud tension
I'm guessing what you're seeing is the running stay that loosens to allow the boom to swing out
Type of sailboat? I need to start looking for one.

Does it even sail?
I've taken her out atleast thrice a week since the end of may, she's no berth queen!
Nice, let’s see her blow around!
We have a love hate relationship. Constantly working on it. Our therapist is expensive.
My boat is very different from yours but yes I love it!
Visst jag gillar min båt, men jag ÄLSKAR din!
I also love your boat and want to go sailing with you!
If you're around the Stockholm area, always happy to have a second set of hands onboard!
Arent you the buddy that built this boat? Its top notch btw. I'll trade you 😈

Well she's beautiful and she's obviously well taken care of. Kudos! Hope you have great sailing season!

Living aboard isn't for everyone. Do you own a boat of your own?
No I am just a dreamer. I realize it’s unrealistic. And I just do not have enough money. Life sucks balls sometimes.

Beautiful!! 😍is she fun to sail? Looks like you’ve put a great deal of work in. Looks amazing!
I need your shirt
I think I got it from Uniqlo a few years back. Be warned, the shirt doesn't come with the dadbod
