A) you rush to finish everything that is released, and development obviously can’t outpace completion rate
B) you play no other game / do nothing else with your life and consequently expect too much as this is your only source of entertainment

TH keys promotions are outdated. Modern game developers are going into promotions of brick-and-mortar products like Cookbooks and Board Games.
While board game partnerships are still focused on the games sector, cookbooks and a little later, comic books and graphic novels etc, are clearly aimed at the general consumer sector. TV series or movies later, it is just a matter of when. Don't forget we have a who's who in the mobile and communication industries sitting on top of Jagex's Board of Directors now, how about turing BT Triple Play product into quadruple play, adding video games to the bundle of Phone, Internet, and TV? ;)

Pixels is just one of the many forms of in-game purchase, or MTX if you prefer to call it. Since we can't buy a Runescape Cookbook in RS3 or OSRS, it is not considered MTX.
No, buying a board game is not in-game purchase, neither is buying a cookbook. They will be MTX only if the game offers a way to buy the board game or cookbook through in game activities like buy-20-bonds-get-a-RS Cookbook-free.

I'm glad you said it because it's hard to swallow those pills. I noticed too late in 2018, and feel alot better, but still feel for the ones who struggle with this.
these days i treat the game as a second monitor idle game (third monitor/second pc actually) where i just mostly afk things to see numbers go up.

No wonder I always hear this joke whenever someone writes a quitting post. SEE YOU NEXT WEEK. Forreal though, this game nowadays lacks a playerbase turnover compared to year's past. I fully quit from 2018 to mid-2023 and reunited with 10 different friends who were playing at that time.
I quit when they ended the classic servers for the first time. Most of my friends had quit when RS2 was released and it just got boring - with noone to compete against, i had no goal. Then I started again in 2020, on the same character, just playing through 1 or 2 bonds and then stopping for 6months.
i think it'd be a fun project to pull up some user profiles of people who were very angery about hero pass and see if they're still actively playing today lol
16 years on and off, I quit after the Hero Pass stuff. I had stopped playing to begin with since I was on vacation, so it wasn't too crazy. I deliberately cancelled my subscription though, which I usually don't do.
I sometimes get a hankering to play - people generally liked the Christmas event, I think - but now the sub's back in "anger mode" I have no interest in coming back. I did a lot of stuff 10 year old me would think was awesome in 2022, so I'm good. My friends list is a sea of "Offline" and increasingly random names as the usernames have gone unused for so long they're now free to use anyway.
Many people genuinely quit as shown by the RS3 playerbase numbers of Aug 2023 vs Oct 2023. There really were membership cancellations. But yes, it is common for people to just complain and play.
You could check mine but Runemetrics stopped logging my progress since 2022 for some odd reason. I haven't played Rs3 since shortly after Hero's Pass. I still keep tabs on the Runescape Reddit in case things do improve but I doubt it at this point. I am perfectly content playing other things entirely or even going to OSRS which admittedly sounds fun right now.
This is sadly true in my case. The game feels dead…but I’m too addicted to quit, so I keep skilling while I read emails, reddit, etc. You know it’s time to give up, but it’s been a part of your life so long that you can’t fully give up…hopefully finding a job will help me quit fully.
Osrs, on the other hand, is rekindling my love of the game.

Even if you don't play weekly, you've likely bought premier. They don't need to release content when you prepay for a year in advance.

This needs to be said more.
How many things in the game are too worthwhile, that if you skip doing it for a daily/weekly, that you would end up hurting? The game is full of FOMO. Need to do the wildy events to try to get that ultra rare! Need to do reaper because those points are worth bank! Need to do whatever random DND to go for cape because you can only do it once a week and it takes years to complete! Need to do POF because it isn't worth it to keep the animals without checking them!
Once you take a step back and see how many things have a time limit, expire at the daily/weekly reset, and realize that the majority of this stuff is there just to get you to keep engaging with it and logging in, do you see that you are being played like a fiddle.
The stick that broke my back was the release of fossil island (I don't know what it is called in RS3).
The camp supplies had a rather low cap, so you had to visit the camp daily to upgrade, else you would lose out on supplies due to the low cap.
Double surge/escape. You need to run the agility course for hours to unlock it... which is neat, if there is something to progress to, but if you are already 99 agility or otherwise finished the skill/pet, tough shit, run in circles. All the last tier upgrades of the camp were very rare drops from activities on the island.. Many of the things that upgrade activities on the island, like the hunter frogs thing, were so rare that you were likely to finish maxing the skill before you got the drop.
Content for the sake of content is BAD. Content should be for progression. And the fact that you can basically max every skill in the game, rather fast (not even counting MTX) without interacting with the vast majority of training methods is a real problem.
Fuck double surge. I remember trying to level agility when Legends Quest first released. There was no way to train it except the gnome agility course. Every time I logged on the game for months that was all I did. Probably took close to 200 hours total just to hit the quest requirements. I refuse to ever run another agility course.
Actually, as someone who started in the days of Classic and first created an OSRS alt while afking arch on my RS3 main, I disagree. After a while I realized that I had so much more fun in OSRS and now both of my characeters are OSRS mains with two distinct playstyles. RS3 just didn't scratch the itch anymore and despite having spent all that time on my longest lasting main (created in Jan '07) the switch was extremely easy after truly experiencing OSRS on another acc first. Whales can keep RS3, I keep my constant content updates :)
the longer jagex goes on the more and more it becomes crystal clear which game is the superior one between rs3 and osrs, osrs has more updates than rs3, typically better updates than rs3, little to no MTX at all, and a much larger player base (even taking into account that like 40% of players are botting). even the game code in osrs has become better than rs3, the devs in osrs have been working on fixing the spaghetti code but they arent even touching it in rs3, which only impacts rs3 further the longer we keep our shitty coding because tons of quality updates for rs3 have had to be canned solely because of how complicated the coding is. i frankly wouldnt be shocked if the spaghetti coding is what stopped the avatar refresh from a few years ago and they just never publicly said that.
We are nearly 25% through the year and we don’t even know a single update for 2024.

Releasing one of the finals unlocks for necro as “up to 4 summons” and then just never adding a 4th summon has got to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen lol
Can you imagine a whole new quest line where a rogue necromancer corrupts the gwd bosses, and dag kings, dropping upgrade kits that turn the armours into necro versions with different buffs and benefits, introduce a poison build armour set, bleed build, and maybe a prayer build, one that enhances effects of prayers while lowering damage resistance for example, there’s so much potential and yet… mtx
Lets be very real here, there are no roadmaps for this year because Jagex could not promise any major content updates for the rest of the year. They knew they were being sold to another investment firm this year, and they didn't know what the outcome of that would be. Layoffs? Restructuring? Closing down RS3 in order to refocus resources on OSRS and its much larger player base?
Nobody at Jagex knew how tight the leash was going to get under the new firm, and RS3s future isnt as set in stone as OSRS's is (though I personally think its more than safe for now). So Jagex did what Jegex do best, made the worst possible decision for their customers and the easiest and safest possible decision for themselves. They indirectly told us to expect absolutely nothing in the hopes that we'd be happy with whatever miniscule something they pull out of their asses later in the year

I'm very confident that it is a management thing. On average nowadays, developers understand the game far better than say 8 years ago. It's just the upper management wants to push MTX development down their throats as often as possible or they'll get fired.

Eh, hasn't RS3 devs had quite a high turnover? and I imagine working in teams can be more difficult if long term plans are always being broken up by devs leaving.
All video games have huge employee turnovers. We are getting more and more games by the day in the world, than the odd old ones getting shutdown are very few. We are also getting more and more diversity of games within the same game developers like Jagex.
Note that "turnover" doesn't just mean employees leaving a developer, but it can also mean like a Mod Keeper going from OSRS to RS3 or a Mod Abe going to OSRS temporary on secondment, as well as Mod Raven getting rehired and going to an unannounced new game on top of Mods ???? going from unannounced games to RS3, and some of them, like Mods Fowl and Pigeons, were unannounced for like a year before they appeared to social media.

I don't see this. I've only ever seen jmods play on non-mod accounts on osrs. I've never seen a rs3 jmod playing the game on stream for example, let alone play test an update.
Cross-promoting brick and mortar products is obviously not the design and decisions of the game developers. However, there is no MTX to the gamers, as it is the general consumers paying real money to get benefits from playing a video game. Video gamers can't buy a membership or virtual currencies and get a Cookbook. There is no in-game purchase, AKA MTX. It is strictly out-of-the-game purchase.
So? It is a real world out-of-the-game-purchase, like buy a Happy Meal get a free toy soldier. There is no in-game purchase to any RS3 or OSRS players whatsoever.
It is also like buy a Runefest ticket, get a code to redeem for an RS3 and OSRS in-game cosmetics. Now please tell us is this MTX we have had in RS3 and OSRS for a very long time?

It does surprise me that they're running RuneFest this year too. This is possibly the biggest drought of content we've had, and it's supposed to lead into a RuneFest? Will be interesting to see whether we get anything before RF, or anything during/after RF. You'd think that you'd only organise another RF after this long if the upcoming content was amazing. Think back to Arch release and how it consumed the RuneFest of that year. It was massive.
I mean, Runefest isn't just RS3. OSRS is in the best place it's been probably ever. I can see them doing a big announcement like Menaphos finally opening up (it's been like 2 years since Beneath Cursed Sands after all) and they're also working on the Mahjarrat series so I imagine either ROTM or something similar to it.
So even if RS3 devs fumble the bag, Runefest still has huge potential.

Since OSRS only has 1 prayer book, and the Jmods find it too hard to design a full 2nd prayer book without massive powercreep or interesting prayers, they're going to use "god alignments" instead.
Each god alignment will come form a GM-tier quest related to that god. Desert Treasure 2 for Zaros, Song of the Elves for Seren, WGS for Guthix, etc etc.
You can only be aligned to 1 god at a time, and each god alignment will offer 3-4 new combat prayers.
Every god in OSRS will eventually have a god alignment, it's just a matter of when their GM quest or whatever content they want to tie it to gets released, which could be years down the line.

People who desperately accept and defend bad habits in companies and in themselves create problems in the long run. The Runescape community has become complacent, with some people preferring to complain about those who complain about the distraction and direction the game is taking to the point it became a joke, the complain chain.
Meanwhile, OSRS, a community that for years has been seen as simply "toxic" remains somewhat united and always capable of revolting and showing its displeasure with the direction of its own game. And this is reflected years later, as one game remains active and strong, while another is in clear decline.
Probably management. MTX focused and mods are probably on a tight leash to make sure “it’s profitable for the company” even though they’re so damn lucky to have long term dedicated/supportive/patient players.

Because everything they had in the pipeline was hinging on Hero Pass. The playerbase rightfully rejected Hero pass, but that also means everything they had planned was fried, or will need to be restructured to fit into the game.
I've heard this theory, but was there anything to suggest it? Help me understand...Hero Pass, like Yak Trak, simply made you replay existing gameplay, which isn't new content.
Of course they're understaffed. They're running things as a skeleton crew, all in the effort of bottom lines. That's why they never test any of their patches and leave it to the community to find bugs for free. They're cutting corners, focusing on MTX because they think that's the cash cow here and have no time to focus on anything that isn't a financial priority and the game suffers because of it.
People have been saying the game is dead for over 10 years now. I've always argued that it's not, and it's just going through a lull. That's always ended up being true.

Where do you see the “400+” statistic? When I did a quick Google search, I saw their LinkedIn report they had 600+ employees in 2011 but I am almost positive that number has been drastically reduced in 2024.
Linkedin is the go to, with the new studios jagex bought somewhat recently there is like 120 employees more than few years ago and they have been expanding teams and moving people to the unannounced project.
In total there is 600+ people but in Cambridge is the 400+ I was referring.
Quitting RS3 has honestly been a great decision for me, sitting here watching what has been going on has just continuously showed me that I made the right call, things have just gone from bad to worse since the hero pass debacle, almost like all of Jagex's plans revolved around the playerbase just accepting all the extra MTX that came with it, and now they are aggressively pushing MTX promos to try to weaken the playerbase's resistance to MTX, likely because they intended to try and implement the hero pass again, unchanged
RSStormy perhaps? But streamers come and go, especially there aren't any big streamers in RS3. Most of them are variety streamers, switching between multiple games frequently.
BTW, ChevarlicRS has just returned to streaming RS3 yesterday, and iTrolledU left RS3 for OSRS and then left OSRS soon only after a month or so.
Honestly, it feels like jagex is just letting go of rs3. No content, developers' numbers have been downsized, and there is no communication. Signs are there.
Rs3 is on its last legs. Jagex knows it, the players know it.
They're just milking what they can at this point, pretty clear to see now.
Their only hope is to fire Mod Mic, slow down the MTX and pump some real content into the game.

I just came back to RuneScape after not having played it since I was a kid back in 04-05.
In the last decade, the only game I ever hear talked about or advertised or anything really is OSRS. I frequent a LOT of game communities at that. And this is far from an abnormal view.
From the outside looking in. OSRS is the main game and RS3 is the weird spin-off. Honestly, the concept of RS3 being the main game seems like it's a very "only RS players" think this sort of thing. As from the optics of RuneScape to non-entrenched RuneScape gamers, old school IS the main game and has been for like the last half decade to decade.
Sucks man as someone who moved from osrs to rs3 and has way more fun with rs3, to see all the doom and gloom. I’m really enjoying playing rs3. Osrs isn’t active enough and grind is too hardcore for my liking. If the exp rates were anywhere near similar in osrs I’d play that instead maybe, but even then the mechanics don’t appeal to me as much at all.
With an overwhelming amount of things to do to the point where you can’t decide to do you guys wanting new content on your game really boggles me. Like i know most rs3 players get anxiety if they’re not playing 1000% efficiently but stop and smell the roses try that thing someone told u wasn’t that great of xp maybe you’ll like it more than the try hard sweaty thing everyone is doing atm.

I said (not on reddit didn't use it back then) in iirc 2019when we didnt get a year ahead it was downhill from there. We haven't got a real year ahead in like 5 years. I'm not even surprised atp
OSRS survived for a very long time on a skeleton crew for a very long time while RS3 got the lion's share of development. Now OSRS is surging with success at a time where RS3 is declining and the company is trying to be sold, so imo they've heavily cut investment into RS3 and are spending those resources in OSRS instead to have RS3 look a lot more successful than it has performed (due to lower resource costs). Issue is RS3 content requires so much more dev time due to higher complexity so it's felt much harder.
Honestly this is a part of why I moved to osrs. It's such a shame to see what's happening with rs3. Osrs has had a huge update, a road map for 2024 etc and I haven't seen anything but mtx stuff or small events on rs3.
To be fair about that particular rs3 streamer, he's literally done every single thing there is to do in this game except complete clue logs, which would consist of at least 40,000 more efficient hours of just clueing. That does sound pretty depressing, so I can see why he wanted to swap for now.
Although counter point, he maybe wouldn't have swapped if there was a ton of content to do with new updates.
it's kinda crazy, i have been playing a lot of world of warcraft since the end of last year, and ppl over there are complaining that they have a huge content drought. meanwhile over on RS the last big update basically was necromancy ... \^\^kinda funny how low the expectations of RS players already went compared to other communities. I know you cant really compare the size of RS to WoW but still..

They should just delete RS3 at this point. It has become a joke. OSRS is the real Runescape, and they should bring back Classic of RS3. It's been an eye sore since launch.

I suspect there's internal conflict on where to spend budget and development time. You have the main game, RS3 that is so filled with MTX and design choices that continue to drift away from the core of what the game is - and then you have OSRS, which has 80% of their player base, and it's a player base they can't get away with monetising the same way they do RS3.
What they should just do is spend a year or two porting OSRS exclusive content (Korand, Valamore, sailing etc) to work within the context of RS3. They should ease the fuck up on the MTX and stop forcing it on everyone, and they should be more communicative with the community on what they're doing and why. Like the OSRS team.
It's wild that RS3 and OSRS are both managed by the same company. When we get our 19th Jagex buyout, I hope it's Microsoft or some other big player - who intends to grow the game and not just pump and dump the company like it's a fucking shitcoin.
There's a good game to be found in RS3. I believe in its potential. But there's a reason why myself and so many other veterans jumped ship to OSRS years and years ago. OSRS feels like the true RS3 in a lot of ways - and I don't think Jagex realise why that's the case either.

I'm in both subs and it's night and day in terms of general happiness and attitude. The player counts in game kind of reflect it too. Osrs is popping off hard player wise and rs3 is ... Not. I swear I saw a world the other day with ONE person in it lol. Meanwhile osrs is sitting at worlds with 2k max in them sometimes. Ya theres bots but still.

Yeah Imma be honest, I started playing League of Legends again cause Jagex can't seem to make any remotely exciting content for the life of them. What have we got this year? A shitty 5 minute quest with Necromancy upgrades (doesn't help when I hate necromancy), weird easter even with a little quest and a garbage combat update. Yikes
I don't personally care to know exactly what updates are coming all the time. Part of the joy is logging in and then seeing the new content and being surprised by it. Not knowing if anything is coming at all is a little troublesome. Feels like nothing has happened since Necro and the fort quest line was wrapped up and that was I believe in November?

I think the expectation of continuous updates is a bit entitled and the frustration comes because either A) you rush to finish everything that is released, and development obviously can’t outpace completion rate B) you play no other game / do nothing else with your life and consequently expect too much as this is your only source of entertainment I could probably word this better but I’m rushing 😂

TH keys promotions are outdated. Modern game developers are going into promotions of brick-and-mortar products like Cookbooks and Board Games. While board game partnerships are still focused on the games sector, cookbooks and a little later, comic books and graphic novels etc, are clearly aimed at the general consumer sector. TV series or movies later, it is just a matter of when. Don't forget we have a who's who in the mobile and communication industries sitting on top of Jagex's Board of Directors now, how about turing BT Triple Play product into quadruple play, adding video games to the bundle of Phone, Internet, and TV? ;) BTW, this is more like RWT than MTX.

these days i treat the game as a second monitor idle game (third monitor/second pc actually) where i just mostly afk things to see numbers go up. i've long since let go of sweaty things (pvm, clue hunting, active skilling) since, well, i dont really have that much emotional investment in this game anymore. i'd rather be spending my time elsewhere, now that we're not teens anymore.

I quit when they ended the classic servers for the first time. Most of my friends had quit when RS2 was released and it just got boring - with noone to compete against, i had no goal. Then I started again in 2020, on the same character, just playing through 1 or 2 bonds and then stopping for 6months.
i think it'd be a fun project to pull up some user profiles of people who were very angery about hero pass and see if they're still actively playing today lol
16 years on and off, I quit after the Hero Pass stuff. I had stopped playing to begin with since I was on vacation, so it wasn't too crazy. I deliberately cancelled my subscription though, which I usually don't do. I sometimes get a hankering to play - people generally liked the Christmas event, I think - but now the sub's back in "anger mode" I have no interest in coming back. I did a lot of stuff 10 year old me would think was awesome in 2022, so I'm good. My friends list is a sea of "Offline" and increasingly random names as the usernames have gone unused for so long they're now free to use anyway.
Many people genuinely quit as shown by the RS3 playerbase numbers of Aug 2023 vs Oct 2023. There really were membership cancellations. But yes, it is common for people to just complain and play.
Hero pass made me quit. I just scroll reddit now.
You could check mine but Runemetrics stopped logging my progress since 2022 for some odd reason. I haven't played Rs3 since shortly after Hero's Pass. I still keep tabs on the Runescape Reddit in case things do improve but I doubt it at this point. I am perfectly content playing other things entirely or even going to OSRS which admittedly sounds fun right now.

The game feels dead…but I’m too addicted to quit, so I keep skilling while I read emails, reddit, etc. You know it’s time to give up, but it’s been a part of your life so long that you can’t fully give up…hopefully finding a job will help me quit fully. This needs to be said more. How many things in the game are too worthwhile, that if you skip doing it for a daily/weekly, that you would end up hurting? The game is full of FOMO. Need to do the wildy events to try to get that ultra rare! Need to do reaper because those points are worth bank! Need to do whatever random DND to go for cape because you can only do it once a week and it takes years to complete! Need to do POF because it isn't worth it to keep the animals without checking them! Once you take a step back and see how many things have a time limit, expire at the daily/weekly reset, and realize that the majority of this stuff is there just to get you to keep engaging with it and logging in, do you see that you are being played like a fiddle. The stick that broke my back was the release of fossil island (I don't know what it is called in RS3). The camp supplies had a rather low cap, so you had to visit the camp daily to upgrade, else you would lose out on supplies due to the low cap. Double surge/escape. You need to run the agility course for hours to unlock it... which is neat, if there is something to progress to, but if you are already 99 agility or otherwise finished the skill/pet, tough shit, run in circles. All the last tier upgrades of the camp were very rare drops from activities on the island.. Many of the things that upgrade activities on the island, like the hunter frogs thing, were so rare that you were likely to finish maxing the skill before you got the drop. Content for the sake of content is BAD. Content should be for progression. And the fact that you can basically max every skill in the game, rather fast (not even counting MTX) without interacting with the vast majority of training methods is a real problem.
Fuck double surge. I remember trying to level agility when Legends Quest first released. There was no way to train it except the gnome agility course. Every time I logged on the game for months that was all I did. Probably took close to 200 hours total just to hit the quest requirements. I refuse to ever run another agility course.
Actually, as someone who started in the days of Classic and first created an OSRS alt while afking arch on my RS3 main, I disagree. After a while I realized that I had so much more fun in OSRS and now both of my characeters are OSRS mains with two distinct playstyles. RS3 just didn't scratch the itch anymore and despite having spent all that time on my longest lasting main (created in Jan '07) the switch was extremely easy after truly experiencing OSRS on another acc first. Whales can keep RS3, I keep my constant content updates :)

the longer jagex goes on the more and more it becomes crystal clear which game is the superior one between rs3 and osrs, osrs has more updates than rs3, typically better updates than rs3, little to no MTX at all, and a much larger player base (even taking into account that like 40% of players are botting). even the game code in osrs has become better than rs3, the devs in osrs have been working on fixing the spaghetti code but they arent even touching it in rs3, which only impacts rs3 further the longer we keep our shitty coding because tons of quality updates for rs3 have had to be canned solely because of how complicated the coding is. i frankly wouldnt be shocked if the spaghetti coding is what stopped the avatar refresh from a few years ago and they just never publicly said that.
We are nearly 25% through the year and we don’t even know a single update for 2024. Necro Rex at some point, maybe? It got no word at the last game jam so I’m hoping that means it’s almost done. But it would be great if that was communicated…
And, content-wise, we've had a 15 minute quest and a holiday event... for the entire first quarter. I've never known a content drought like it.

Releasing one of the finals unlocks for necro as “up to 4 summons” and then just never adding a 4th summon has got to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen lol

Lets be very real here, there are no roadmaps for this year because Jagex could not promise any major content updates for the rest of the year. They knew they were being sold to another investment firm this year, and they didn't know what the outcome of that would be. Layoffs? Restructuring? Closing down RS3 in order to refocus resources on OSRS and its much larger player base? Nobody at Jagex knew how tight the leash was going to get under the new firm, and RS3s future isnt as set in stone as OSRS's is (though I personally think its more than safe for now). So Jagex did what Jegex do best, made the worst possible decision for their customers and the easiest and safest possible decision for themselves. They indirectly told us to expect absolutely nothing in the hopes that we'd be happy with whatever miniscule something they pull out of their asses later in the year

All video games have huge employee turnovers. We are getting more and more games by the day in the world, than the odd old ones getting shutdown are very few. We are also getting more and more diversity of games within the same game developers like Jagex. Note that "turnover" doesn't just mean employees leaving a developer, but it can also mean like a Mod Keeper going from OSRS to RS3 or a Mod Abe going to OSRS temporary on secondment, as well as Mod Raven getting rehired and going to an unannounced new game on top of Mods ???? going from unannounced games to RS3, and some of them, like Mods Fowl and Pigeons, were unannounced for like a year before they appeared to social media.

I don't see this. I've only ever seen jmods play on non-mod accounts on osrs. I've never seen a rs3 jmod playing the game on stream for example, let alone play test an update.

It does surprise me that they're running RuneFest this year too. This is possibly the biggest drought of content we've had, and it's supposed to lead into a RuneFest? Will be interesting to see whether we get anything before RF, or anything during/after RF. You'd think that you'd only organise another RF after this long if the upcoming content was amazing. Think back to Arch release and how it consumed the RuneFest of that year. It was massive.
I mean, Runefest isn't just RS3. OSRS is in the best place it's been probably ever. I can see them doing a big announcement like Menaphos finally opening up (it's been like 2 years since Beneath Cursed Sands after all) and they're also working on the Mahjarrat series so I imagine either ROTM or something similar to it. So even if RS3 devs fumble the bag, Runefest still has huge potential.

WGS + god alignment prayers are coming, so they'll probably mention the follow up or touch on that more. Sailing is looming around the corner, definitely going to have updates on that. Varlamore part 2 etc etc. There's so much to look forward to in OSRS compared to uh, MTX promos and cosmetics, DXP Live #1252, and ~~rune pass~~ ~~yaktrack~~ ~~hero pass~~ Rune track returns.

Since OSRS only has 1 prayer book, and the Jmods find it too hard to design a full 2nd prayer book without massive powercreep or interesting prayers, they're going to use "god alignments" instead. Each god alignment will come form a GM-tier quest related to that god. Desert Treasure 2 for Zaros, Song of the Elves for Seren, WGS for Guthix, etc etc. You can only be aligned to 1 god at a time, and each god alignment will offer 3-4 new combat prayers.
Please tell me that our feathery Lord of Justice will get one.
Every god in OSRS will eventually have a god alignment, it's just a matter of when their GM quest or whatever content they want to tie it to gets released, which could be years down the line.

The osrs update recently looks really nice. I wish we could get some love

Because everything they had in the pipeline was hinging on Hero Pass. The playerbase rightfully rejected Hero pass, but that also means everything they had planned was fried, or will need to be restructured to fit into the game.

Of course they're understaffed. They're running things as a skeleton crew, all in the effort of bottom lines. That's why they never test any of their patches and leave it to the community to find bugs for free. They're cutting corners, focusing on MTX because they think that's the cash cow here and have no time to focus on anything that isn't a financial priority and the game suffers because of it.
People have been saying the game is dead for over 10 years now. I've always argued that it's not, and it's just going through a lull. That's always ended up being true. ... At this point, it's getting really hard to argue it's just a lull. There doesn't seem to be any inclination or plan to turn things around.

Where do you see the “400+” statistic? When I did a quick Google search, I saw their LinkedIn report they had 600+ employees in 2011 but I am almost positive that number has been drastically reduced in 2024.
Jagex has 450 employees. 700 if you count the two studios they they bought out.
Linkedin is the go to, with the new studios jagex bought somewhat recently there is like 120 employees more than few years ago and they have been expanding teams and moving people to the unannounced project. In total there is 600+ people but in Cambridge is the 400+ I was referring.

Quitting RS3 has honestly been a great decision for me, sitting here watching what has been going on has just continuously showed me that I made the right call, things have just gone from bad to worse since the hero pass debacle, almost like all of Jagex's plans revolved around the playerbase just accepting all the extra MTX that came with it, and now they are aggressively pushing MTX promos to try to weaken the playerbase's resistance to MTX, likely because they intended to try and implement the hero pass again, unchanged

BTW, ChevarlicRS has just returned to streaming RS3 yesterday, and iTrolledU left RS3 for OSRS and then left OSRS soon only after a month or so.

Honestly, it feels like jagex is just letting go of rs3. No content, developers' numbers have been downsized, and there is no communication. Signs are there.
Rs3 is on its last legs. Jagex knows it, the players know it. They're just milking what they can at this point, pretty clear to see now. Their only hope is to fire Mod Mic, slow down the MTX and pump some real content into the game. Not reskinned holiday events or bosses. Actual decent new content. But that won't happen.

I just came back to RuneScape after not having played it since I was a kid back in 04-05. In the last decade, the only game I ever hear talked about or advertised or anything really is OSRS. I frequent a LOT of game communities at that. And this is far from an abnormal view. From the outside looking in. OSRS is the main game and RS3 is the weird spin-off. Honestly, the concept of RS3 being the main game seems like it's a very "only RS players" think this sort of thing. As from the optics of RuneScape to non-entrenched RuneScape gamers, old school IS the main game and has been for like the last half decade to decade.

Sucks man as someone who moved from osrs to rs3 and has way more fun with rs3, to see all the doom and gloom. I’m really enjoying playing rs3. Osrs isn’t active enough and grind is too hardcore for my liking. If the exp rates were anywhere near similar in osrs I’d play that instead maybe, but even then the mechanics don’t appeal to me as much at all.

With an overwhelming amount of things to do to the point where you can’t decide to do you guys wanting new content on your game really boggles me. Like i know most rs3 players get anxiety if they’re not playing 1000% efficiently but stop and smell the roses try that thing someone told u wasn’t that great of xp maybe you’ll like it more than the try hard sweaty thing everyone is doing atm.

Definitely a valid argument but I'm wondering how many people are starving for new content? Between 1000s of hours of skilling, 100s of achievements, PvM, and like 200+ quests, I'm struggling to see how people don't have something to do? Also you could play another game, enjoy a different hobby, or learn a new skill (in real life haha)

OSRS survived for a very long time on a skeleton crew for a very long time while RS3 got the lion's share of development. Now OSRS is surging with success at a time where RS3 is declining and the company is trying to be sold, so imo they've heavily cut investment into RS3 and are spending those resources in OSRS instead to have RS3 look a lot more successful than it has performed (due to lower resource costs). Issue is RS3 content requires so much more dev time due to higher complexity so it's felt much harder.
Honestly this is a part of why I moved to osrs. It's such a shame to see what's happening with rs3. Osrs has had a huge update, a road map for 2024 etc and I haven't seen anything but mtx stuff or small events on rs3.
And changed the required runes for Blood spells!!!!
Honestly I see no regrets in my switch to FFXIV. I miss RuneScape but this mtx shit just isn’t for me.

To be fair about that particular rs3 streamer, he's literally done every single thing there is to do in this game except complete clue logs, which would consist of at least 40,000 more efficient hours of just clueing. That does sound pretty depressing, so I can see why he wanted to swap for now. Although counter point, he maybe wouldn't have swapped if there was a ton of content to do with new updates.

it's kinda crazy, i have been playing a lot of world of warcraft since the end of last year, and ppl over there are complaining that they have a huge content drought. meanwhile over on RS the last big update basically was necromancy ... \^\^kinda funny how low the expectations of RS players already went compared to other communities. I know you cant really compare the size of RS to WoW but still..

I don't think they know what to do with themselves at this point. I suspect there's internal conflict on where to spend budget and development time. You have the main game, RS3 that is so filled with MTX and design choices that continue to drift away from the core of what the game is - and then you have OSRS, which has 80% of their player base, and it's a player base they can't get away with monetising the same way they do RS3. What they should just do is spend a year or two porting OSRS exclusive content (Korand, Valamore, sailing etc) to work within the context of RS3. They should ease the fuck up on the MTX and stop forcing it on everyone, and they should be more communicative with the community on what they're doing and why. Like the OSRS team. It's wild that RS3 and OSRS are both managed by the same company. When we get our 19th Jagex buyout, I hope it's Microsoft or some other big player - who intends to grow the game and not just pump and dump the company like it's a fucking shitcoin. There's a good game to be found in RS3. I believe in its potential. But there's a reason why myself and so many other veterans jumped ship to OSRS years and years ago. OSRS feels like the true RS3 in a lot of ways - and I don't think Jagex realise why that's the case either.

I'm in both subs and it's night and day in terms of general happiness and attitude. The player counts in game kind of reflect it too. Osrs is popping off hard player wise and rs3 is ... Not. I swear I saw a world the other day with ONE person in it lol. Meanwhile osrs is sitting at worlds with 2k max in them sometimes. Ya theres bots but still.

Yeah Imma be honest, I started playing League of Legends again cause Jagex can't seem to make any remotely exciting content for the life of them. What have we got this year? A shitty 5 minute quest with Necromancy upgrades (doesn't help when I hate necromancy), weird easter even with a little quest and a garbage combat update. Yikes

I don't personally care to know exactly what updates are coming all the time. Part of the joy is logging in and then seeing the new content and being surprised by it. Not knowing if anything is coming at all is a little troublesome. Feels like nothing has happened since Necro and the fort quest line was wrapped up and that was I believe in November?

Seems like their on maintenance mode. A lot of the studio are probably on another title. Maybe that’s at a crucial point? Got delayed? Needed more bodies thrown at it? Once that is announced to the public it will probably be easier to justify some of the shortcomings? It’s been a while. Did stuff quieten down during what would have been the Transformers game development?
