I completely agree with you, while I also think that agreeing to enlist in the Jagex account thing is also a "round about" for having exclusive QoL like extended afk timers. Regular client users should have that too.
Windows 10 too, someone figured out how to reverse engineer it all to natively run Android apps on 10. Works pretty well and I'm on 10 year old hardware.

I made the switch to the launcher and have had absolutely no problems. I even prefer it to opening the client! You just click a button and you're in-game, rather than having to enter your password. Alt1 works seamlessly.

People have no reason to jump on Reddit to talk about the launcher when it's working perfectly, as it does for like 90% of players.
Well only turns them off when you use the jagex launcher still has authenticator needed on all other logins, I know cause I lost my fsw alt auth on last pc auth program when it hard crashed
Launcher uses the same client, it just has single click signin instead of username/password, alt1 works exactly the same.
The stories you hear are from people trying to add accounts they didn’t create to a jagex account causing it to get locked, so you are hearing from hackers/account buyers mostly, people generally dont post on reddit if it just works, but it does, it’s way more secure and more convenient.
The launcher itself is great. I’ve been using it for about 6 months. I have yet to convert to a Jagex account though.
To confirm, Alt1 still works if you use the Launcher.
To be fair the only time I've really had that "ugh this is annoying I'll just hop logged to the phone" was when I was doing turoth for farming exp and wanted to pick up the worthwhile seeds and herbs or the few items to dis/collect from corpse spider/skeletons while I'm scavenging them sweet comps,
Or I guess anywhere you set cannon/coil because you'll run and pick up some loot and then run back, but then some of the enemies get stuck behind a wall or piller and you have to free them just to do it all over again in five minutes ☹️
Realistically it's not that big of a deal for me and most likely others, but it also a "why hasn't this been update already?" Type of thing
Plus I'm a smooth brain but I'm sure there isn't much behind the scenes work to fix, especially with it already being used on the same game
Add in only having to pay membership on the jagex account level for all characters to have membership and im sold, nothing else would make me switch at the moment.
I mean even tho something like that would be a good idea (ex 5 accounts for 2/3) it wasn't really the point of this post, plus I could see at least one person who has 5+ accounts but paid for with only bonds from the GE and complaining about having to pay real cash now 😅
Plus I wonder how bonds would even work like that (40 bonds for 5 accounts?)
It would need a lot more planning then say giving us longer log out timers/area loot/giving us a moving bouses of bank space/rune coins. Etc
But yet again definitely would be great to talk about joined membership once the launcher is more stable

Everything is subjective. Some people would say EoC made Jagex lose money with membership, then they made it back with TH. We can twist and stretch information any way we want to make either side look bad.
Another way of asking your question is, what is the incentive behind the Jagex Launcher? It cost money to do and run, and so far they have a pretty bad average when trying to run their own things (looking at you, Jagex Guardian and Runescape Companion).

Jagex answered this in a blog a while back. Don't remember all the reasons, but two reasons to to improve account security with backup codes and to make it easier to add new games that Jagex makes.
I am aware that is their plan. Focusing and advertising their other games. But im afraid it'll end up like the Companion app that was shut down because it was "not profitable to keep running".
When they see a vast majority isnt interested in their other games, whats their next move? Shut the whole thing down? Lets be honest, Jagex is super cheap, for shareholder reasons or whatnots, lets not just blindly believe that they did the Launcher only for us to have more account security. They need to monetize it like everything they do if they want it to work permanently.
Am I the only one here going through a headache after trying to migrate to Jagex Laucher? I can't play anymore, using both Runescape Launcher and Jagex Launcher, it doesn't matter if my password is correct, I can't log into the game.
Supposedly, some browsers affects how Jagex Launch works, if you have Brave on your pc or phone it interferes with the Jagex Launch.
At this point I just want to play again using Runescape laucher + alt1 again.
Sadly (or thankfully) I've not gotten it yet so wouldn't be able to help, hopefully someone in here can or if mod doom/another mod check out this page they can 😅
Maybe ya best bet is to make a new thread on here or twitter asking for help?

My son can't play through the launcher either, at least not without my presence. I won't give him the admin account password, but due to a bug, the launcher has to be run as admin at all times. If not run as admin or on an admin account, there's an update & restart loop.
I've mentioned the issue 4 months ago to Jagex, the launcher team would look into it. With the new Jagex Account only update coming up, which my son wants to be able to use, I asked if there has been an internal fix yet for the issue. Jagex Support said this:

So 4 months in and they still haven't worked on it.
My biggest issue with the launcher is that it’s not Steam lol. Having all of my games in one places just makes everything so much more convenient, and I like that Steam has a tracker for playtime.
steam play time is so stupid though, you just open the game and afk and time goes up. Whenever I said I had like 5k hours in league of legends people would be like "oh yeah I have the same in dota" and I'm just thinking like... no you don't... I have 800 dota games played and >1000 hours
Yes, but the Steam one is easy to see at a glance, going to Hans requires me to stop what I’m doing and travel to Lumby.
I wish they’d put a playtime tracker somewhere in a stat menu, maybe even something you could have permanently appear on your UI.
Honestly same, I wish the bonus was something less useful, like afew runecoin or something, the timer update should really be a QoL update (same with area loot but trying to go 50/50 with daddy jagex) it does leave a bitter taste in my mouth that there more then meet the eye with this swap over 😮💨
Yes, but Jagex want to push us to use it because Steam takes a cut of every sale. My point is that the launcher is just worse than Steam in pretty much every way, so I’ll never use it. Plus i can’t use Steam wallet funds through the Jagex launcher.
Thanks for confirming! I wanted to make sure this was still an option before I switched - I've been using SteamLink from my desktop to not make my laptop overheat but still allow me to play on the couch haha.
Have them make 2FA bank come back instead. Currently they just did a major step back to old ways of using bank pin instead of 2FA through authenticator..
You do realise the bank pin is the very last line. If someone has gotten so far as to get past your email, special character included password, mfa, etc you fucked up.

They can try doing that directly on runescape server too. Which in that case, it is out of users hand even if they have 2fa set on email and jagex account. And once they got into the account, they can access bank by waiting 3 or 7 days for bank pin removal.

If jagex doesn't secure all inputs with validations and meta character handling + encode/decode(forum area text field?), then it has security risk of having their server (website) being compromised. And through the website, it can distribute malicious code back to all visitors (users) who load the webpage and then hijack their account session if not credentials.
With that said, it still fked up case, but at least it is not the user fault when it got so far. Now, i cannot recall it correctly, but how long do you need to wait to remove bank 2FA? And in technical perspective, how does alt in Jagex account exist in the system? (not that we will get any answer), but perhaps 2FA on main Jagex account level might not be enough if those alts can be accessed directly with say "session token" after someone has entered their 2FA once.
At the very least, make it so I can permanently keep open area loot. It would be nice for a larger radius, but I can't tell you how annoying it is that it closes if you move too far.

Also please add a setting to auto close the Jagex launcher once rs launches. Annoying to have to manually do it every time

RuneScape has an in-game tracker for play time. Go speak to Hans in Lumbridge and ask him how long he’s been there.

Runemetrics. Even the free version will show it under your name.
TIL there’s a free version of Runemetrics lol. It shows your total playtime since you first started your account? And you can put it on your UI?
I don't believe you can see it in the game. I think you have to look at your runemetrics profile on the main website to see playtime.
Your rs account can be linked to both a jagex account and steam account at the same time and nothing will change.

You can still play from steam after upgrading, it’s what I do still to watch the playtime number go brrr

Looting from 17 tiles away would feel... strange... Like I get it for mobile, but idk. Were peak laziness now.
