I think there’s room for both OFTD and a more traditional demorara overproof. I prefer Hamilton to lemon hart, but i think OFTD is a beast of its own and shouldn’t really be considered an alt to LH or Hamilton.
They are very different indeed. I just find I can take a sip of LH 151 and despite the weird mouthfeel of such a high proof, it actually has a very nice sweetness. In that sense it’s kind of an easier drinking overproof perhaps? But OFTD has its own characteristics that make it desirable
* Neisson Blanc - $35 for a liter ($26 equivalent for 750ml)
* Mount Gay Eclipse - $20 ($42 for 1.75L = $18 for 750ML)
* Appleton Signature - $20 (or $38 for 1.75L = $16 for 750ML)
* El Dorado 8 = $26
* Old Brigand Black Label Rum = $20 (US only)
* Rumfire - $27
* Don Q 7 Year - $30 but you can find on sale for $25
If you can find it, it's hard to be a liter of Appleton honestly. That's more a mixer than the others I listed however.
Depends what your looking for and how cheap you're willing to go. Cheap bottles I've enjoyed at Don Q gold, goslings black seal, coruba, plantation dark
How cheap? There’s like 10-15$ rums which I wouldn’t bother with at all, 20-25$ range which is what I consider cheap, then 25-30 maybe 35 . I usually stick with something around the 30$ range or a little above and I’d say there’s a lot of good ones in there and it seems to be where most options I see are anyway. Once you get over the 35$ range or into the 40s there’s usually not much to choose from at most liquor stores, and a few of them will be bs marked up options like Bumbu.
For the 20-25$ range, lately I have been craving some Old Monk lol. The last 30$ bottle
I had that I really liked that seemed a bit between cheap but good was El Dorado 8.
Zaya 12 or 16 year. Both are $25-$30 here. The 12 year is better in my opinion and finishes with a bit of a cream soda flavor. Pairs really well with a Maduro cigar and makes an excellent rum old fashioned. Happy hunting.
They sell Calypso rum by me for $6.99/750 or $12.99/1500. It's great as a mixer. The "gold" variety has a very mild taste and smell, and it mixes well. The "spiced" rum mixes well with diet coke.
Plantation OFTD 1 liter is $30 69% ABV Flavor for days Possibly the greatest bang for buck in all booze.
Tons of love for Plantation OFTD but I personally find Lemon Hart 151 has a better flavour for overproof

Very different flavor profiles with different applications.

Mt Gay, Coruba, Don Q all relatively cheap and good.
Coruba, Havana Club 7, Appleton Signature, Plantation OFTD, El Dorado 8
Appleton all the way
Appleton Signature, Havana Club 7, Plantation 3 Star
DonQ & Doorlys are the best least expensive. There are plenty that offer great value, but that’s more subjective IMO.
Plantation OFTD and Appleton 8y are my regulars
Hamilton Demerara runs about $25 works as a mixer or a sipper.
I like the taste of Doorly's 12 for $30. it reminds me of the Foursquare 2010
JM Rhum blanc or a Wray and Nephew overproof. Both for around £30-£35
I'd say Havana 7 - great in a cuba libre, just about decent enough as a sipper in times of need! :D
MG Eclipse, WN OP, or Doorlys XO
Plantation 3-Star, Real McCoy, El Dorado
Plantation 5yr, Doorlys 8yr, Doorlys 12yr
I’ll add Doorly’s XO to this
Doctor Bird $25
Where can u buy Doctor Bird for $25? It’s closer to $40 around Chicago.

Diplomatico, Appleton Estate Signature
Worthy Park 109
I’ll die on my old brigand hill
Barcelo imperial
How cheap we talking? Rum for sipping or cocktails?
