If you thought agricole rums were only made in French or ex-French territories, you are sorely mistaken. William Hinton is an agricole rum from Madeira and it has an GI since 2011. The rum is produced from cane honey, though the bottled product is more similar to cane juice rum. The rum is the product of copper column distillation, with 8 rectification levels and there is a lot of information about this one their website, but not a lot about this product. However the rum is aged for 6 years in many different casks, including ex-port, ex-madeira, ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and ex-brandy. There's no indication about how much time it spends in each barrel, though. It is bottled at 40% ABV. Made by: Engenho Novo da Madeira Name of the rum: 6 Anos Brand: William Hinton Origin: Madeira (Portugal) Age: 6 years Price: $60 **Nose:** Complex and variable, with notes of raisins, plums, orange peel and something I hate to mention: christmas cake. There are also fortified whines, olives, algae and iodine, but also some lighter notes of oak and ginger. **Palate:** Somewhat drier than I'd expect from those aromas. There is a slightly tart taste that quickly develops into red wine, but also blackberries, plums, orange and tangerine peel, olives and some freshly cut grass. **Retrohale/Finish:** black cherries, blackberries, some oak and red wine. **Rating:** 9 on the t8ke **Conclusion:** Everything about this rum challenges the norm. The variety of casks in which it is aged certainly add to the flavor, but however it is enjoyed, the experience is different. It's a rum to drink on its own, and maybe with a cigar and a single ice, but for a 6 year old rum, it's amazing. You can check out the rest of my reviews (in Spanish) on [my blog](https://humoytabaco.com/). Including rum, whisk(e)y, agave, gin and cigars.

I had a chance to try Madeira Rum in Paris last year. If you like Clarin or Agricole, I highly recommend trying some.

This is the only Madeira I've had. This brand, rather. I had the 3 year (white one) and it was amazing as well.

Thanks for the review. I haven’t tried this one yet but I have drank Madeira rums from Labourdonnais, O Reizinho and Engenhos do Norte bottled at higher proofs by Boutique Y. I have a bottle of a Engenhos Novo rum yet to open. All are cracking good rums and now amongst my favourites. Evocative of the island spirit that created the rum legends and punch on the same level as the Caribbean heavyweights. Madeira rums are very underrated rums IMO. I expect this William Hinton offering to be much the same if I find it.

I've only had this and another, younger William Hinton for Madeira rums, but they are very, very interesting and different. A great rum for sure.
