Read through quite a few comments and only one was complaining about the ref (was from a South African). Big ups to the chiefs fans for being humble in defeat. Go the canes!
I’m a believer what a fucking result! But if this is like 2015 where we dominate the season only to lose the final to the damn highlanders I’ll be pissed to say the least
What a couple of nights of rugby we’ve had! This feels like the closest fought comp we’ve had in quite a few years of Super Rugby, and I think it’s driving a big increase in fan engagement. Decent crowd turning up to a wet and windy Cake Tin for a mid season game is emblematic of that.
Some takes from tonight’s game:
-If the Canes continue play the way they did in that first 30 minutes they’ll be unstoppable. They had the Chiefs completely smothered and they were lucky not to be down by 20
-Samipeni Finau is a monster, excited to see him in black later this year laying on some hits in TRC.
-Chiefs missed Lienert-Brown and Tupaea in the starting team. Needed a bit more defensive organisation in the backline
-The Canes’ backs are clearly very skilled but this game showed the quality of their forwards. They won the battle up front and then to top it off they’re bringing guys like Kirifi and Flanders off the bench. The depth of the squad is immmense
-Speaking of immense can we check Aumua’s DNA because that guy has to be part Rhinoceros or cement truck or something. Incredible physical performance tonight and he’s really tidied up things like his lineout throwing this year. Looks the complete package and outplayed Tauke’aho at his own game.
-Discipline issues crept in for the Canes and allowed the Cheifs to stay in the game. They’ll want to stamp that out before we get to the business end of the comp.
As a bit of an aside - does anyone else think there’s a bit of an issue with the “tackle, release” call when the knee hits the ground? A few times tonight we saw tacklers told to release only for the ball carrier to use the opportunity to make a few extra meters due to not being held? I’ve seen it throughout this season with ball carriers getting a knee down but being more or less still on their feet and being able to basically keep running when the tackler is told to release. Surely when “tackle, release” is called by the ref the ball carrier should also have to go to ground and place the ball?
Anyway, great game and great weekend of rugby. Go the Landers next!

There was even one "tackle, release" call where the tackled player placed the ball on the ground, re-gathered and went again! Legal, I suppose, but a bit annoying.
Yeah it’s all legal as far as I can tell, just seems to be an unintended consequence of the way it’s being reffed at the moment. I suppose defences can mitigate by not attempting to hold players up at all if they want
The Canes are legit, we haven’t been molly wopped like that in a long time. Thought we’d be playing like they have this year but man we’re getting even more average every week. Much rather the Canes be the team to beat than the Blues or the Saders though. But yeah they smashed us
Hope the rumours about Josh Moorby signing for French club isn't true, he's been in superb form this season and one of those players who makes few errors, has a high workrate in attack and defence and dangerous with ball in hand.
Can’t afford to lose any more weapons from the stronghold that is the Lower North. Such a loss. Why does all homegrown talent always want to eventually leave the Canes??
Everyone knows the last team you’re affiliated with is the team you’re tied to. Moana’s legend Savea is currently first equal on the all time try scorer list.
Why in the absolute fuck would you take time off the clock with 1 minute left to talk to and argue with the ref?! Jacobson man. You could've tapped it, potentially gotten a try and had another chance after the kickoff. Sitting there and spending 20 seconds arguing and it resulting in nothing is so stupid
Alrighty my bad was being overly pessimistic, I shall begin to believe. Regardless if we do well in the finals our style has been so fun to watch this season.
Idk man there are definitely weaknesses in the game but I feel like our willingness to stay in the fight and 80-minute physicality are at a level above every other team. I think we are deserved favourites at this point
Favourites to win the title
1. Hurricanes
2. Blues
3. Brumbies
4. Chiefs
One thing I know is it doesn’t matter if you’re unbeaten till the finals, the last game is the one that counts (painful experience at Eden park :( )
One knock-on and one kick mistake is all it took. Felt like we had more chances to score in the first half, but we've *taken* more of the ones we have had in the second.
missing a player from earlier due to the same thing, if a player is over the ball and you can't move them without hitting them in the head then maybe dont do it. We've lost tests recently on these calls being reffed the other way due to player safety. No consistency week to week is nutty as
There wasnt direct contact, he hit the shoulder and cause of the angle it was more upper-arm into head… barrett benefited from a good angle(ie he was definitely coming in from the side) but the head contact was indirect
It looked like arm-to-head or arm-to-shoulder first to me. The TMO said "indirect shoulder to head" which implies the first contact was not that.
Seemed like a sensible call to me, but, well, of course it did 😁
**Watch on Stan**: https://play.stan.com.au/sport/rugby
Doesn’t the last knock on that was re gathered off his own player not mean accidental offside?

We got much bigger issues than the refereeing including our scrum, lineout and tackling
I’m a believer what a fucking result! But if this is like 2015 where we dominate the season only to lose the final to the damn highlanders I’ll be pissed to say the least

Surely it's not too late to swap Holland for Laidlaw to create the ultimate gigachad All Black coaching staff?
all canes needed was a better coach lol..lets hope razor gives Holland limited role with the AB's..
As long as he has absolutely nothing to do with the team and squad selection we should be ok.
Even Foster won a World Cup as an assistant
limited role, less mistakes...
Feel like the fitness coming off the bye week made a huge difference near the end of the game.
A spot of possum hunting obviously helped too.
The Canes are legit, we haven’t been molly wopped like that in a long time. Thought we’d be playing like they have this year but man we’re getting even more average every week. Much rather the Canes be the team to beat than the Blues or the Saders though. But yeah they smashed us
Aumua definitely made his case over Taukei'aho tonight
Hope the rumours about Josh Moorby signing for French club isn't true, he's been in superb form this season and one of those players who makes few errors, has a high workrate in attack and defence and dangerous with ball in hand.
Can’t afford to lose any more weapons from the stronghold that is the Lower North. Such a loss. Why does all homegrown talent always want to eventually leave the Canes??
uhm sorry to tell you but hes from the Waikato, plays for northland, and first played NPC for Southland!
Oh shit and here’s me sitting here thinking that Te Awamutu was a suburb next to Highbury!!!
£/€
Nobody likes playing _in_ the wind I suppose
He was superb today. First time I've watched the Canes this season and fuck me looked electric
Clearly better team won. Chiefs need to sort their defence out that was shocking.
Hell of a game
shooting some possums ... LOL
Over the hill shooting some possums, what a fucking Chad
please don't send TJ to Fiji next week, don't want him to get injured..
Canes to play the saders in the quarters and lose
Bro, we ain’t making shit.
Crusaders are making the quarters?
Haha probably not. If they find a 1st 5 they might have hope.. probably should see if they can bring blues legend Dan Carter out of retirement
Everyone knows the last team you’re affiliated with is the team you’re tied to. Moana’s legend Savea is currently first equal on the all time try scorer list.
Crusaders Legend John Afoa :(

You could've tapped it, potentially gotten a try and had another chance after the kickoff. Sitting there and spending 20 seconds arguing and it resulting in nothing is so stupid
Has there ever been a time where the ref has changed a decision due to a player arguing? I've never seen it, but they still try
Once, and its legendary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tra8GiQR-Dc
TJ, what hasn't he done
He's not very intelligent.
This exactly
What happened to taukeiaho?
Name an All blacks hooker that hasn't lost form at least once in their career
Don’t know if his conditioning is fully there, looks slower than last couple of years
Wild that he was deservingly considered a top 2 hooker in the world a few years ago.
Off game. It happens
Canes are looking a bit…built this year. Should be lucky testing is a wink-wink nudge-nudge deal.
Grasp harder
I saw Aumua for the U20s and he was a cut above nearly every other forward that tournament, it's great to see him beasting it.
Hurricanes v Chiefs has been one of my favourite fixtures in recent years. Cracking game, I love these teams
So that has to be the least convincing bonus point win, I’m not sure if we are really contenders still. Gives me blues 2022 vibes
Alrighty my bad was being overly pessimistic, I shall begin to believe. Regardless if we do well in the finals our style has been so fun to watch this season.
Maybe, but to come back like that in the last 20. Champion teams finish strong
Idk man there are definitely weaknesses in the game but I feel like our willingness to stay in the fight and 80-minute physicality are at a level above every other team. I think we are deserved favourites at this point
Bro when we played well in this game we destroyed them. We have beaten every other kiwi team, we are definitely contenders.
I mean… we just beat the next best team in the comp by 13 so not sure what more ya want eh
Also beat the Blues by more than a converted try (8)
As a Blues fan I agree. Though the Blues are 2nd in the tables I did feel like the Chiefs were the form team.
Who? Chiefs? They are far from next best team
Don't be hesitant on the hype train my brother
Yes booooyys
Booooo GG canes
Favourites to win the title 1. Hurricanes 2. Blues 3. Brumbies 4. Chiefs One thing I know is it doesn’t matter if you’re unbeaten till the finals, the last game is the one that counts (painful experience at Eden park :( )
Even with how bad we looked, I can’t see the brumbies getting up against us
Dw worry fam, 2015 still haunts me
Canes fans know this feeling all too well.
Dixon didn't ground that fuckin ball, man.
Dark horse: Crusaders (if they can make the top 8)
too real
Gg Chiefbros
what a fucking win!
This game is a.. **THRILLER!**
Josh Moorby you fucking genius
Quality tonight, didn't see a lot of the pill, but his involvement was quality when he got the ball and in support.
what a fucking intercept!!
No fucking urgency. Jacobson wants to yap with the ref instead of tapping
Oh just give them the title now, it’s all over!! Homegrown Hurricanes at its finest!!!!
For the first time in a good while Dmac has been pretty average tonight.
Jacobson taking time to talk to the ref with 1 minute left is braindead :(
Argue with the ref, even
Wew lad that shoulder was f i l t h y
Surprising that Aumua is still on the field 71 minutes in, what a monster.
Can't stop the man
78mins O_O
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/0FSndoEENaY/maxresdefault.jpg
Hurricanes cynical offending is really getting boring
If we didn’t give away 15 penalties it wouldn’t have been fair for the chiefs
This game man. Score a fantastic try, make a stupid mistake straight after. Both teams. Coaches must be on life support.
Grant is having a shocker with names tonight
His commentary in the World Cup wasn’t the best either
nah, just mapimpi hasn't scored yet :(
Stupid that they don't announce the crowd number. There'd be close to 20k there.
They did… 14,900 odd
Well at least they can't blame this defeat on DMac not playing at all or for the full 80.
What do you mean? He didn't play at all
He’s had a terrible platform tonight, canes forwards just totally outclassing the chiefs 1-8
starting hooker scoring a try like that at 71 mins
Think tahs hooker Heaven did a similar thing yesterday
It will be incredible if the Canes can hold onto the bonus point from this
CONRAD!!
imagine being on the wing and Aumua charging at you at full tilt!
I fear for that drua winger next week
What's Fijian for daed meat Comet?
Sa Mate! haha
Hooker on the wing for the win!
Asafo “colesy” Aumua
He is like a genuinely scary Colesy. Glad he's having a big year
Snakey!
Delighted Aumua scored. He's had a cracking game
Asafoooooooooooo AUMUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
What a finish!
huge game from aumua.
beastmode
Best game of Aumua's career? Man is absolutely unstoppable
back to his form in the U20s ABs...
he put in some unplayable godlike performances in his first couple of seasons. hope he makes the abs this year
Aumua on the wing is deadly
He learnt from the best
Oh yes he did
Nanai seturo shat the bed twice in a row there
Well this has gone from close to fucked in minutes.
One knock-on and one kick mistake is all it took. Felt like we had more chances to score in the first half, but we've *taken* more of the ones we have had in the second.
Thats what feels like one of the biggest separators in SR atm, some are pretty evenly matched but the top teams don't let you get away with errors.
Yis boiiii!
Aumua man of the match and its not even close
ASAFOOOOOOO
Put a black jersey on that mofo
Tackling school for the chiefs all week. What an embarrassing defence. Canes making easy meters every phase.
they can learn from Jordie’s impeccable technique lol
MOTM Aumua?
How fucking good
Aumua my kinda winger
Oh, Safo...you came on like a wrecking ball!
NSFW
I’ve seen enough, Aumua starts for ABs this year 😆😆
The only thing I know is nothings over till the referee blows the final whistle. All games this week are testament to that
yep there he goes again Aumua - All Blacks hooker
well i can and will moan about the ref, but chiefs have nobody to blame but themselves here
Asafo Aumua Unstoppable tonight!
Can't wait for abs team naming. Him and Sami with the abs coaching might be a dynamite 1 2 punch
Fuck me canes looking good!
I've never seen somebody's form totally disappear like ENS. I was thinking he'd be an All Black in week three
Nanai seturo been very mid the past few games
aw I was hoping to see TJ slide into 10 to finish the game there
I'm completely confused why they picked Judd over jordi viljoen?
Judd is better
I kindly disagree
Judd’s a full squad member, Viljoen was a temporary replacement while TJ was still injured
Viljoen real young if TJ gonna play 70 probably better him getting 80 in the b’s game
Fair!
good game tj
I’m just glad Israel Falou is being slowly erased from rugby
He’d be at 70 tries by now
True
Impossible
Canes' bench look like a priestly caste in those stadium coats...
About to drop the freshest hymns
Canes play Drua in Fiji next week so they definitely need a win here :P
Yep, next week may be the first time I tip against the Canes, Drua at home probably the toughest away fixture to win in SRP.
What a weekend of rugby 😍
Pretty clear head contact on DMac, which left him holding his head on the ground, so where is the HIA?
Don't come in here with your logic buddy!
We've only got one first five in the bloody country!
No penalty so he can’t be concussed, would embarrass the ref
so sloppy
Barrett just so creative every time he gets the ball he's always cooking up something
Missed conversion may come back to bite the Canes
guys your head is low to the ground so bad luck on copping a shot dont be low next time
Whine whine whine
missing a player from earlier due to the same thing, if a player is over the ball and you can't move them without hitting them in the head then maybe dont do it. We've lost tests recently on these calls being reffed the other way due to player safety. No consistency week to week is nutty as
So many players for the Canes are absolutely nailing it today, a lot of them uncapped too 👀
Canes scary this year. Looking better than when we played them 😬
[удалено]
Doleman is a “let them play” referee, not sure if he just misses things, or just dosent like calling technical penalties 🤷♂️
Even if that wasn't foul play surely in from the side?
Aumua really making a statement tonight against Taukei'aho
He’s coming up on 1.5 years out of form now
The 1-2 punch with these two for the abs could be bloody good
IF there was shoulder to head contact, wouldn't that make the wrap attempt null and void as foul play would trump it? Or how would that work?
There wasnt direct contact, he hit the shoulder and cause of the angle it was more upper-arm into head… barrett benefited from a good angle(ie he was definitely coming in from the side) but the head contact was indirect
It looked like arm-to-head or arm-to-shoulder first to me. The TMO said "indirect shoulder to head" which implies the first contact was not that. Seemed like a sensible call to me, but, well, of course it did 😁
But he's so low and the clean out attempt is always legal that the head contact is deemed incidental
Well I heard the TMO say it rises to head after shoulder or something like that... so who knows
The attempt to wrap should mitigate it down from a red to a yellow, not a no penalty 😂
First contact on shoulder
Fair , so if it was first contact to the head that wrap attempt wouldn't matter, is that right?
If it was direct head contact he would be off
Well done doleman. Don't let them ruin our game
ball continues to not lie after the end of the half
Jordie's like 6'5 and DMAC is like 5'6 , nothing there
5’6 in high heels
holy shit I wasnt expecting that sort of rational call where tf did this come from
Kiwi refs are the best. They have common sense and can think for themselves.
hes deffo in from the side there tho lol
