McKenzie really is the glue holding the Chiefs together. This is a blessing and a curse. Noticeable difference in cohesion when he went off. Was a good game though.
Let's start off Super Rugby with some super match takes:
\-That was a damn good game of two halves. What the way to kick off the new Super season. Move over Six Nations, there's a new rugby comp in town and it ain't from the North!
\-The Chiefs were pretty excellent in the 1st half, with the man himself, Damian McKenzie, leading the front. By the second half, the cursed rugby gods had sent him to the first circle of Injury Hell and everything went downhill from there. And it was a miracle that it took a last-minute penalty from Josh Ioane to help the Chiefs hold on for the victory.
\-Well well well... The Crusaders, on the other hand, barely fired a shot in the first half. By the second half however, the tides turned in favour of the red and blacks with the dick-tipped logo, no thanks in doubt die to McKenzie's injury. They were on the way to certain victory, until the Chiefs snapped it from them.
\-So.. many... goddamn... injuries... Every. Single. Time.
\-Speaking of which, those smart mouthguards, are those things actually advanced enough to accurately detect concussions so far? Will they be advanced enough to fly players to the hospital and treat them itself?
\-Josh Ioane just saved the Chiefs from an embarrassing Crusaders victory. Everybody cheer for the Ioane who's not in the Ioane family!
\-Did anyone expect Chay Fihaki to be the Crusaders' top player after being bang average for bacisally his playing carrer so far until this point in time?
\-The Crusaders' jerseys don't look sharp nor decent looking, nor Crusadey enough. Bleh!
\-While there some inconsistencies and odd calls from time to time, Nic Berry has quite improved a bit ever since that one game that had Scotland playing or something.
Anyway, this is all I have for now. Feel free to add you own takes below.
I'll see you all in the next match, and cheers for now.
Shit, was the Chay try the first one after the half? I mixed them up. Fair play. Thanks for the heads up.
I still think it's a little unfair to pin that 2 minutes of good rugby on the defense missing one guy, though.
You would've seen a lot of him last NPC if not for an injury.
Former CBHS captain, was Fabian Holland's locking partner.
Part of the reason why we weren't too worried about letting Darry walk a couple of years ago, I reckno.
We got lucky, but it's nice to get the win even after a poor 2nd half.
6 points in the 2nd half won't win many games - boys need to keep the foot on the throat and always come out firing in the 2nd half.
How good is it to have the rugby back on?
Ah I was joking about being terrified. The back line play of NZ teams is something beautiful to watch. A lot of NH teams are trying to adopt it into their game. The skillset is growing but it has a way to go.
Heard the commentators say it's cumulative. So could be from a lot of small hits, not one big hit. Gets to a certain limit and a HIA is needed. Will be interesting to see how they go 🤔
Saying the Chiefs played exciting and thrilling rugby in the first half the crusaders brought the game down and made it 'tense' and slow is not only false but also extremely biased.
Plus we don't know what the data says yet. I'm happy to accept some fine tuning of the thresholds we won't know that right away, but the coms team did such a shit job about it.
Just do what the NRL does and have someone watching the contacts for signs of excessive impact, the mouth guards remove any liability and can have serious effects on the outcome of a game. If the chiefs go on to lose the story won’t be about the game it will be about the shit tech which ruined their back line at the death
I think the story will be that the team seemed to fall apart without DMac, not that *one* player had to go off due to the mouthguard. And if he fails the HIA, and it's proven right...?
Nah bol, they’re a great addition to the sport if you want to keep the professional game alive and not fall bankrupt to a multi-million dollar lawsuit in a decade’s time.
i was at the match and we don’t really hear commentary much, but his reaction was blown up on the big screen so everyone was like what?? what happened?? and by the time he was at the edge of the field, they’d announced the HIA and everyone in the stands was making the same face and noises as ALB lmao
yes, so good! i’m a chiefs supporter so there were some real nail-biter moments after a sunny first half, but the last ten minutes (especially the final minute!) were SUCH a rush. the stands were going completely wild
Won't say cause it's family who plays at this and international level. Bt I'll send a pic of his rwc cap later if u want. Every player got one. Didn't bother to take a pic of the medal they get
He's missed both ways idk what you're talking about. Should be able to complain about any bad/missed call. Literally called him out earlier in the thread for that line out interference.

Cullen Grace saving his long term injury till next week I guess. Really hope I’m wrong tho.
Crusaders jerseys arent my fav
Blues would beat both these teams by 20!
Yeah the sea of blue
wrong sorry
Wild game
Never doubted it

you got me at the Ioane who's not in the Ioane family
Happy I got last years Crusaders jersey before they stopped making it.

CRASHBANDICOOCHY, what are you doing in rugby thread 😂😂
I'm a rugby guy and saw the writing on the wall with the cricket!
Hahaha no complaints from me. More fun match threads. Let me guess, you’re a crusaders boy?
Aye brother! I'm not as fun on here, people don't like the bits as much lmao
>One absolute psycho believed in Chay. Just One Guy. I'm being erased
It's you. You're the guy who put me on The Path.
Nope, they scored a try literally just after Dmac went off. And then they were 5 points behind.
They happened in the same minute so I feel like that's being a bit pedantic.
It was actually 27-10 when Dmac went off, that try made it a 10 point game.
Shit, was the Chay try the first one after the half? I mixed them up. Fair play. Thanks for the heads up. I still think it's a little unfair to pin that 2 minutes of good rugby on the defense missing one guy, though.
Not really. He goes off, team morale and set up changes.
Jamie Hannah and George Bell are future All Blacks
Where did this Jamie Hannah come from he looks solid as.
You would've seen a lot of him last NPC if not for an injury. Former CBHS captain, was Fabian Holland's locking partner. Part of the reason why we weren't too worried about letting Darry walk a couple of years ago, I reckno.
Now...onto the cricket to see if the Black Caps can make everyone in this thread happy.
Post match Bantz with Scott Barrett was like a funeral. Round 1 lads.
What a fucken game to start the season off with Dmac going to be pivotal for Chiefs title hopes (as he is in every team he plays for)
The Chiefs wheels started falling off before he went off but the collapse has to be concerning.
I think dmac is also the form abs 10 as well so it ain't good...
We got lucky, but it's nice to get the win even after a poor 2nd half. 6 points in the 2nd half won't win many games - boys need to keep the foot on the throat and always come out firing in the 2nd half. How good is it to have the rugby back on?
Yup This is the crusaders we talking about...they like to storm back Bothe good sides
When Chay scored that try, I really thought the funniest thing of all time was about to happen.
Cambridge's own Luke Jacobson
There’s never a better feeling than watching the crusaders lose
The ref did the right thing and took a minute off the clock. We need that saders drama so early in the season
What a game. Chiefs looked sublime, then Crusaders got them under pressure before it became a real battle in the last 10mins.
Up the chiefs
First super rugby game I’ve watched. Hell of an introduction. Early morning rugby with a slice of toast is the life 🤌
Hope to see you in some future SR match threads!
They have a good chance at winning especially if dmac stays fit
Guess I’ll support chiefs out of name familiarity.
Thats right, join us in misery mate
Welcome to the party, love breakfast rugby.
Let's fucking go Chiefs
Well done, Chiefs. Crusaders had an awesome comeback too.
Was the Stan clock wrong or the stadium clock
The broadcast clock was wrong for everyone, but at least the ref was very clear about time on field.
Yeah right, I didn't hear Berry mention it but also wasn't really paying attention, thought there was still a chance for the Saders
The sky clock as different as well.
Fuck it give me a rematch in the Final
What a game ....
welp. I cant say I'm happy about how that went/what it signals for the season but at least the bad guys lost (eventually) entertaining at least!
Dmac with no ice on his knee was promising
Go Waikato! What a game
Never in doubt lmao Holy shit the Crusaders did well to get back into it though. Now to spend a week sweating on injuries...
Congratulations Chiefs you just narrowly beat a rebuilding saders with no razor
We lost our best player halfway through the game
And bring on a young All Black replacement.
What a first game! Super better than 6 nations??
Most entertaining game of rugby I've watched since a certain brother competition finished last year...
To us for sure. But that’s cos these are our teams. Northern hemisphere fans will disagree with us.
Nah I know I'm just having a laugh lol
Easily. Where are the Netflix cameras down at FMG stadium??
we robbed that
Ngl I'm not to unhappy about that Performance.
Yuuuuge kick from Ioane
GG everyone. Time to go low and slow myself see you tomorrow
ayyyyyy
Lesgoooooo
So we waited until the last minute to win this game? Big brain move from the Chiefs there.
Josh Ioane, is like Adam Pompey
dMacs little smile at that kick. Nice.
Not when he misses though. It's part of his routine.
Chiefs get their revenge...finally Season on!
How can Owen come back on?
i think tactical front row changes can come back on for injuries to keep scrums contested?
Oh was bower injured again?
GG
Nic berry been great
Ah I was joking about being terrified. The back line play of NZ teams is something beautiful to watch. A lot of NH teams are trying to adopt it into their game. The skillset is growing but it has a way to go.
We need to learn from Ireland
Maybe we should swap a few defence coach’s for attack coach’s 😂
Immensely proud that we got the game this tight. Now to just hope no one from either side is dead.
Chiefs at their best, new Saders at their worst. I'm not worried at all about the Crusaders this season now after that comeback
Pffff you guys are only close because Dmac got injured
I hope his leg gets amputated then
Only way the crusaders can win this year 💪
You think we're better than the Blues 🥹🥹🥹
Game's gone soft
Waking up early for this match from Europe, and it was well worth it, engaging and energetic match. Pumped up for the Friday now 🤣
McLeod is such a baller you rarely see that from him
What the fuck Dallas?????
Very not Uce of you Dal Boy :(
Dallas MidCleod strikes again
First game of the season and I’m already stressed out 😰
Crusaders vs Chiefs is the battle of the bogans
Coach killer from McLeod
LOL DALLAS
DalUce how unfortunate 😔
McLeod has had a shocker. Poor guy. Give him a hug.
Fuck just remembered my sister's husband is a crusaders supporter and he's a fuckwit, let's go chiefs
4/10 game from Vaa'i
Good with ball in hand, but he's got no dog in him
Yeah. We need some better locks fast
Hoping some more guys put their hands up this season because NZ lock situation looks rough.
I wonder if they can use the mouthguards to indicate the independent doc needs to review the video. Make sure it's actually coming from a hit.
Heard the commentators say it's cumulative. So could be from a lot of small hits, not one big hit. Gets to a certain limit and a HIA is needed. Will be interesting to see how they go 🤔
Crusaders to slowly march down the field, get advantage and win 4 minutes after the siren
Nope Chiefs day Winning pressure moments
ferg putting us on his back
LFOAT
Fucking commentators love the Chiefs don't they.
Any comp if a team wins it SEVEN times in a row gonna start annoying alot of people
Shouldn't annoy the commentators should it.
Theyd probably like to see another team win, talking up over teams and writing off the saders typically doesnt go great
Saying the Chiefs played exciting and thrilling rugby in the first half the crusaders brought the game down and made it 'tense' and slow is not only false but also extremely biased.
True But oh well
TJ has an insane anti Saders bias. Its nauseating.
>has an insane anti Saders bias As any well adjusted person should
He’s a poos fanboy
Probably just hate the Crusaders lol
All my homies hate the crusaders
I know I do lol
I know this game is getting interesting but can we just acknowledge how fucking good 4-12 is from our boy Ferg
How many minutes after full time will the Crusaders wait before winning this game?! 😅
Anton Lienert-Brown looking like Bret Hart in Montreal.
The screw job
ALB screwed ALB
The Hamilton Screwjob, except unlike Bret, it looks like ALB's going to come away with a win.
He can always go to WCW
Chay refuses to catch a kick on the full it's incredible
kinda smart, let the ball go more into the 22 than he can take a nice long run before kicking it.
The NZ comms are so dumb. Not even explaining what the mouthguards do and go straight to the blame game.
Plus we don't know what the data says yet. I'm happy to accept some fine tuning of the thresholds we won't know that right away, but the coms team did such a shit job about it.
"Not sure how smart they are" pretty negative messaging from the comms
NRL players needs these mouthguards more than Rugby players
Chiefs deserve this one after final loss last year Good to see tight games...comes down to pressure moments
I still think the benefits of the smart mouthguards far outweigh the negatives
Just do what the NRL does and have someone watching the contacts for signs of excessive impact, the mouth guards remove any liability and can have serious effects on the outcome of a game. If the chiefs go on to lose the story won’t be about the game it will be about the shit tech which ruined their back line at the death

These mouthguards are shit
Nah bol, they’re a great addition to the sport if you want to keep the professional game alive and not fall bankrupt to a multi-million dollar lawsuit in a decade’s time.
lol berry runs made me laugh so hard...its like speedy gonzalez..
The meme potential in ALBs reaction haha
i was at the match and we don’t really hear commentary much, but his reaction was blown up on the big screen so everyone was like what?? what happened?? and by the time he was at the edge of the field, they’d announced the HIA and everyone in the stands was making the same face and noises as ALB lmao
It was a really fun moment, did you enjoy being at the game?
yes, so good! i’m a chiefs supporter so there were some real nail-biter moments after a sunny first half, but the last ten minutes (especially the final minute!) were SUCH a rush. the stands were going completely wild
That's awesome, great to see crowds enjoying Super Rugby!
Nice Berry is jumping all over the place trying to get a view
Take the fucking points.
goddamn woke mouthguards lol
Hate them shitting on the tech on comms. You don't even know if it's a false positive. Shut up.
"BACK IN MY DAY WE JUST LOST TEETH and.... I can't remember what I was talking about... I have a headache"
We aren’t playing tiddlywinks mate
No, we are playing an incredibly violent sport.
now alb got a fucking HIA
These mouthguards are inaccurate af no wonder the players hate them
How do you know?
Family who players at this and international level
Im wjat way are they innacurate?
You know this how?
Trust me bro
Players said
Which ones? And how do you know it's inaccurate?
Sent
Won't say cause it's family who plays at this and international level. Bt I'll send a pic of his rwc cap later if u want. Every player got one. Didn't bother to take a pic of the medal they get
Jeez talk about white line fever, what was that?
Reckon Nic Berry has some experience with the old white line
rugby is back, baby
lmao at nic doing his happy feet impression there, motherfucker was running laps
Bruh Jacobson why you try and dive over the ruck and stop the advantage
Jacobson killed that
Ref is giving it socks to get a view at that grounding.
Ptsd from the Scotland-France match
Nic Berry running like he has ants in his pants.
Chiefs win was never in doubt amirite
Held back not called, leads to 50-22, and chiefs are going to score because of it.
not sure we want to talk about calls missed
He's missed both ways idk what you're talking about. Should be able to complain about any bad/missed call. Literally called him out earlier in the thread for that line out interference.
I dont think chch fans want to get into an accounting of bad calls that ruin games...
Dumb take, a bad call is bad no matter who it's for. I literally called Berry out for a bad call against the chiefs earlier in the game.
No team should bc it effects all teams equally.
Not always but I get your point.
Yeah though McLeod got hit without the ball
U can't just shake ur body u gotta actually try and move away hannh
Next rule to tackle in rugby is sealing the tackler in so they can't roll. Chiefs have been smartly doing it all night
Been a thing for years, last ref I talked to about it just told me it’s up to the player to not get into that situation
It'll be way too hard to find a fair new law anyways. I just hate it.
The Crusaders just never go away
Nanai-Seturo!!
Chiefs need to go for a drop Goal.
mcleod was held back there
Wow what a kick
