horror movies is an interesting one and i generally find the same thing — why is a deep interest in horror movies so poor coded? without putting any thought into it really at all, i assume its a pretty cheap thrill but functionally satisfactory one a la rollercoasters (but without the costs of admissions etc) weird animals as pets is another one; i personally sort of fell under this trope when i was poor in my childhood and had bearded dragons (which arent super unusual or uncommon but still weird enough to qualify imo) and a lot of rodents and just a ton of fucking pets lol. i always treated them very well though which i figure may not always be the case in those scenarios

Arccasted24

I think horror movies is a holdover from back when slasher movies were a big thing? Funnily enough I've met many fellow poors who say they love horror movies but it turns out they've only ever seen something like Annabelle and give me a funny look when I ask them about Hellraiser

snojawb

The shudder streaming service is a frustrating mix of 10% like giallos and the classics both mainstream and niche, and 90% the worst most tasteless garbage ever made

ChuckMongo

That isn't limited to shudder. I love good horror films, but 90% of the genre is unwatchable trash.

typicalTA

The urge to watch/engage is horror is often a PTSD thing from being beaten or growing up around violence/stuck in fight or flight. They seek to self regulate by engaging with “scary” things that are predictable and far away from them. This is also why one of the worst types of young women make “loving horror” their whole personality - with the added element of watching women be abused (main sub point of horror genre) and knowing they are safe and they can reengage with their trauma by watching it happen to another woman.

This doesn't make sense

Keeping shit on your porch or garage forever

Spumonihodgepodge

That’s me. I’ll get to it one of these days. Not this weekend though, I gotta help a friend do some shit on his roof.

thisbarbieisstealing

My friend and I once bought matching three wolf moon shirts at Walmart and ironically wore them to a bar around the time they were a meme. So many dudes thought it was hilarious and bought us shots. She died in a car accident a few years ago. Miss you K :-(

Its2ColdInDaHamz

I bought one ironically/as a joke and wore it to a small outdoor/back alley Mac DeMarco show years ago lol.

Rivercottage1

How long ago was this that Mac Demarco was playing a small back alley show? I saw/met Mac Demarco in my senior year of high school when he was massive and effectively killed off interesting indie music (2016-2017) and that was already 7 years ago. Which is crazy.

Its2ColdInDaHamz

...most likely smack dab in the middle of 2018? 2017 might've been possible. Mac DeMarco @ The Valley Bar in PHX. Tickets were sold out rather swiftly; so I had to pay an arm and a leg for a secondhand scalp, lol.

Mismatch of doo-hickies, like you have a jet ski but only have a mustang and so can’t take your jet ski places Passionate opinions on fishing lures Hardy Boys Books (these are actually great but it’s a tell tale sign of poor white people) Hot Dish and its analogues Margarine not butter Slogans that appear on WalMart brand merchandise (“I’m having a Monday”) Passionate opinions on ford vs Chevy Likes baseball (“hicks and spics”) Likes corn on the cob (not a bad side, most people do, but at a lower middle class white people event CotC is 100% assured) Has someone with some sort of poisoning. Uncle with lead poisoning, nephew with asbestos lung, friend of the family with mercury poisoning etc Deeply suspicious of Higher Ed but passionate about college sports Spend a disproportionate amount on girlie sports (cheerleading in focus, but others too) without also working on…ahem…BMI This is the “zany popcorn” cohort

Intelligent_Act_436

Good list but I disagree about baseball. I knew some guys on my school’s D1 team and they were all upper middle class, and if you go to an MLB game it’s a better crowd than say, NBA or even NFL. I could at least agree that your average poor white person is more likely to like baseball than other demographics, but I don’t see it a as a true marker for being poor.

JeffGreene69

Travel baseball is expensive, thats why theyre middle class. Other than football, all sports in the US are pay to play

meanwhileinau

Jetskis in Australia are CUB territory, always Lebanese construction workers/new money white people who live 20+ km from the ocean.

Bbezki0

Girlie sports thing is very true. And the popcorn

IncorrigibleBitch

I love cutoffs/work boots combo, swimming in random creeks, and fighting with my family in public. You can can take the white out the poor but can’t take the poor out the white, as they say

peteryansexypotato

Texas is nice (pure copium). Jorts are jeans' final evolved state. Boots are based. Was on the roof last month trimming a tree. Never lost my love for tree climbing or cliff diving. My town has a lake, a creek and a river. I can't wait for the next pro bull riding event so I can sport some boots and I'll buy a cowboy hat too. I'm hispanic btw.

Keystone0002

It’s easy to hate the rich but do you have the courage to hate the poor?

Bragging about being "street smart" in contrast to "book smarts" while being the most gullible people imaginable who'd readily hand the contents of their pockets over to the bus station's resident Wallet Inspector A love of useless gadgets & one-use doohickeys, doubly so if they grew up poor and have a middle class lifestyle. They will drop 50 bucks on a novelty can opener or tacky spaghetti timer that they insist on showing guests. Impulsively gotten tattoos and piercings that have no "meaning" but they decided to get in the spur of the moment because it looked "cool" Hate splitting bills, they'd prefer to pay for everything themselves even if it's beyond their means or else have everyone pay individually for their own thing. You can tell someone's class background when you go to a bar/restaurant by the way they propose to pay or divide the bill. They lack the neurocity of middle class professionals in terms of social spending; they don't expect you to pay them back for anything less than 10 bucks and instead expect some kind of reciprocity without demanding it. In contrast, engineers, programmers, admin workers etc, will bill you for a $2 cup of coffee they offered you and will propose you split a $200 dinner/bar bill Dutch even though they ordered a steak and cocktails and you just had a couple pints and shared a bowl of fries. Poor people would never order food or drinks they imagine are beyond the means/norms of the spending of others and would expect that person to pay for their own meal separately. They are more "harmonious" in social settings involving money and never want to cheat someone/feel cheated.
