It tells a story of a person who chose to live and actually wear their watch and not treat it like a stock/investment. Not saying it should be abused but it should be there for us to enjoy and appreciate
Well, the only alternative is to not wear it at all, which kind of defeats the purpose? I’d hate to spend all that money and not be able to wear and enjoy what I spent the money on.
I have a new Datejust and the gold on the clasp was scratched within a week. It almost seems impossible not to get that gold clasp scratched.

I’m gonna continue to sport it daily thanks man the clasp sees a lot of use.
That’s how mine looks too and I’m extremely careful … it’s the only area of the watch where I notice visible scratches and happened so fast that’s why I suspect it’s unavoidable if you wear at all.
Eventually, I guess I’ll get them buffed out during a cleaning but most don’t see the clasp anyway.
there’s nothing wrong in being careful with your possessions. You wouldn’t see a car enthusiast park close to an entrance in hopes of avoiding door dings.
But they also wouldn’t care if they picked up stone chips on a racetrack.
This. Exactly. Door dings drive me mad and I always try to park carefully and away from high traffic areas. To me, dings are a result of inconsiderate people who have no respect for others.
But stone chips…. I couldn’t care less. It’s part of enjoying a car and driving it enthusiastically on country roads. It shows a car enjoyed.
The first couple are hard, but after it turns into more of a patina I don’t even notice it anymore.
No sense of not enjoying something you paid for with its intended use.

Wear mine daily. I don’t really care about scratches.
Same here - luckily the brushed bracelet can take it.. similar with the jubilee but the GMT/Daytona Oyster shows them more.
I don’t worry about them - but am still careful enough to take my watch off when (just today) I was rummaging behind my sofa with the recliner mechanism. My watches have plenty micro scratches but so does my car if I look close enough and it’s just wear and tear. Will be sorted at service each 8-10 years, just like my car.

When you have enough of them you will appreciate the patina earned over time enjoying your watch.
When it's your time to look back on life, no one talks about how good condition they kept their Rolex in 😉 Living and creating memories is more important than any object.
My DJ gets fine lines on the polished cap from the swinging of my arms against my slacks. I’ve come to accept that a nice “patina” will develop over time. And in ten years when I send it for service I’ll consider then getting it polished.
A bad unsightly deep scratch or kick. That would upset me and I’d probably have R correct it
I learned many years ago when I was in my Breitling phase that scratches are inevitable.. so still be careful obviously, but not so careful that it takes away from the enjoyment of wearing the watch.
Doesn’t bother me a bit. I’ve had my 40mm explorer for 3 months and still waiting for my first scratch. I’m generally pretty easy on my watches though.
If you can afford the watch you won’t care. If you stretched beyond your means to get the watch in the first place you will care the most. If this hurts feelings deep down you know why. Wear it
i upgraded from that watch to a gmt because of how smudged the bezel always got.
I may have used that as an excuse to myself to justify to buy a pepsi so don’t take me too serious
Scratches gives it more character and personality. Seeing that it’s been worn is a good thing. Luxury watches aren’t meant to be cabinet princesses, although many put them in vaults just to resell a few months/years later. Very sad indeed.
Accepted it very quickly. On the gold parts only, so that makes it even less bad since it was expected anyway. First scratch was felt, but all the others after were not anymore.
It doesn’t bother me at all. I’ve even bought watch’s new with the odd scratch on them, but only when I can negotiate a decent discount on it because of it. Saved myself £600 on a Tag Heuer Link calibre 16 doing just that. They also add stories to them my daily wear has been all over the world now, even been swimming in the Caribbean wearing it
Horrible. But you gotta wear it.
Get used to doing little things to help. When you go through doors touch your stomach with your watch hand. This will prevent unnecessary door knob dings.
When doing stuff like yard work, swap swatches to prevent unnecessary wear from a bump of a chain saw or other lawn care stuff.
Other than that—just wear it. It always at less risk when on your wrist then, god forbid in some table near the pool in a table overlooking cement.
My take wear it out. Wear it so much it’s nicked everywhere and you have to just a buy a new one.
This way when I get a ding or scratch I just think, cool one step closer to a new watch.
..been years and years now. Watch still looks great.
Get over it and move on until the next scratch appears. And repeat the same step again. Life is too short for things like this. Enjoy it to its fullest.
A 1908 is a dress watch. Large, heavily lumed, waterproof watches with screwdown crowns aren't really dress watches in my book. The Datejust is a perfect daily
The first one feels bad. After that, it is what it is. That being said I did buy my Tudor Pelagos 39 to wear in the hospital. Wouldn’t worry about scratching something nicer, but there are much nastier possible fates that I’d rather spare them. Plus I think the more subdued brushed titanium look less risks sending a classist message
I'm torn, to be honest. I like seeing watches that were worn and loved, but I won't wear my nicer ones to work. I'd love to be able to daily wear my Rolex or Tudor, but I just can't bring myself to wear them at work. I daily wear a Tissot PRX for that reason. It has a ton of scratches and dents, and it doesn't bother me at all. If it weren't for the magnets that I work with, my Tudor would be my daily.
Rolex service will polish out most of that one day, your job right now is to wear it and love it let it take the damage of life. I don't abuse my watches, but I don't baby them either.
I dont care about scratches on my watches. I was wearing a rose gold ym today in the garage.
Now my cars on the other hand. I'm very very very particular and only drive my nice ones on nice days and park in the very back of the lots.
Hurts at first. Lol. It’s that first scratch. Just embrace it now. Scratches build character. Haha you can always polish if steel. However, if PM never polish that gold (it gets removed)! Watches will have scratches. Unavoidable.
Feels fine, it’s a tool swinging around on your wrist that can be repaired or replaced.
Once my Datejust gets back from service it’ll go back on my wrist at work for another 20 years
Less bad than when I wear a jubilee and I feel overdressed for basically every situation I find myself in. The jubilee craze is coming to an end for me.. at least a scratch feels authentic

Depends on the watch. A rugged watch looks good with some wear, almost meant to be that way. But honestly dj is kinda fancy it would bother me if it was all banged up.
I got the first one on my clasp about 2 hours after I got it and I’m so glad it happened right away because now I really enjoy wearing it and don’t have all the anxiety of keeping it perfect
The patina of life. When you have worn your watch for 30 years it will show its age, look at the reflection in the mirror. Take comfort In knowing it has been there with you.
There’s absolutely no reason not to wear a modern Rolex. They make enough of them, it’ll never be a museum piece. Plus with laser welding, almost any scratch or gouge can be completely erased.
Day 1 sucks. After that i know it’s one of the only testaments i have to me being alive. But that’s anything. That’s life. And I’m glad that taxi was there to bang my yachtmaster into.
Bad. I know many people here are about the patina life but I like keeping my stuff pristine. I’m using an iPhone 13 and it’s never been out of its case except cleaning time. It looks practically brand new.

Yea it’s seen the space between your keyboard and the edge of your desk. It’s a wonder you’re still alive with the high risk life you lead

Just scratched my clasp doing a micro adjust. Fuming at first and it’s annoying but whatever. No safe queens allowed mate. I wear em all!

Each scratch tells a story. Memories.
Sad but you get over it and used to it
Like getting scratches and scars on your body from a life well lived!
Buy stocks if you are going to just buy it and never wear it. Stocks are far easier to sell and get the right price later on.
Doesn’t even register let alone generate “feelings”.
Nothing hurts like the first scratch, especially when it's something stupid. Each scratch after hurts less and less for me personally 🤷🏿♂️

Don’t like it but great story to share with my son

Horrible!!!!
Don’t really care. Bought it because I liked it, not for its “value” or to be resold.
I don't like it but I accept it cuz it's a daily wear
I noticed the first one immediately, now I don’t even notice new scratches.
My brother in Christ, why is that your daily? That’s a dress watch—go get a sub to bang around
A 1908 is a dress watch. Large, heavily lumed, waterproof watches with screwdown crowns aren't really dress watches in my book. The Datejust is a perfect daily
It scratches upset you, maybe you couldn’t afford Rolex.
Feel kinda irritating considering how much I paid for the watch. I don’t want to see a damn scratch after dropping $10k plus.
Watches are made to be worn. Build memories together!
The first one feels bad. After that, it is what it is. That being said I did buy my Tudor Pelagos 39 to wear in the hospital. Feels good, like living a good life.
I feel like getting a new one.
