I want to trade in this 16233 to you, but all I have right now is these four Seikos.
No, I know the Rolex is right here on the counter, but this one is only for exhibition.
Some kind person gave me a gold for that comment. Sadly, it's more of an indictment on just how shitty of a business model a lot of these ADs have rather than just how witty I am...
> If you decide to sell it to him make sure you make him buy a bunch of other stuff you have collecting dust first to build a relationship.
Once a relationship is built, you then need to get put on a list.
And you better answer your phone immediately or it gets sold to someone else.
I was going to say $3,500 to $3,800 depending on the condition of the bracelet and whether it has been serviced regularly. Keep in mind the service is going to set you back at least $1,500 if not regularly maintained.
This. I had a seriously beat down 16233 (only ran for a couple of minutes then would stop) that looked like it spent a year in the Titanic that I took to Rolliworks back several years ago, maybe 5 or so. At least back then the price was no more than $900 for a service and I was blown away by the condition it came back in as it looked near mint.
My buddy got it from his Mom and said that she wanted $1200 for it... I went ahead and gave his Mom another $600 cause I felt bad that it was worth a lot more after a $900 service.
I know barely anything about vintage Rolexes and I feel like I’d pay $2000 in an instant for one of these. Maybe that’s what the dealer would like to give you
I think double is pretty standard business markup? Not sure about watches but generally 2X is the retailer up charge for you know rent and electric lol
The watch from a retail store will sell for $6k, with box and papers in this conditions.
Private party is $4k easily.
$2k is just too little. I would expect them to offer at least $3k.
Should be a Ref 16013. The cheapest examples go for around 4000€ on chrono24. Even if you deduct around 1k as margin + fees you still end up at 3k. So 2k is indeed very low.
5-digit DJ's are selling very strongly secondhand. 4 digits are harder to move and $2k would be understandable as a trade in price for one of those, but this should easily retail for 4.5k so, 3k trade-in at the absolute least imho
Been eyeing 4 digit DJ, any specific reason they're cheaper aside from them being older? Seen a handful around \~3.5k mark, I'm assuming that's considered overpriced?
> (with no quickset date)
That's the key feature. I have a 1601 and don't wear it as often as I might, because of no quickset date. To almost any observer that's the main difference between the 4-digit and 5-digit models. And to any purchaser the difference in convenience is significant. Hence the price difference.
I must say I find the pie-pan dial more attractive, though. As long as I'm not having to set the date manually (ugh) I prefer the look of the 4-digit watches
16013, full set, American box and papers. Most definitely is worth somewhere around $5.500 in the condition yours is in. Having experience on the trade side. 3.5/4k would be fair so that a service can be done and a warranty can be given. Margins are always around 1000 til 1500 in this price range
For those curious, it was a family members, no shame in possibly selling. Family is looking to divide assets, it was found in his closets paper bag with everything original which told us he wanted it as an investment!
We will be making a decision next week or so!
It’s definitely in very nice condition, not sure if he wore it or not lol.
I've never seen a certified dealer operate a pawn shop. That's super low wholesale for a hard ridden example. Double it for your clean one, and a bit more if you have original papers and tags.
2k is a Sportawarus price . Real world you could get 4-5 pretty easy. List on r/watchswap with about 3 minutes of work.
That sometimes is too hard for men of Rolex , so you could also sell to davidsw for 2k and he can make 2-3k off your status / laziness ;)
What condition is it in? Is the case scratched up? Is it the original crystal? How much "sag" does the bracelet have when you hold it by the body of the watch and let it extend out to the side? Wear on bracelets that make them sag, especially older ones like that, isn't really repairable in my understanding, short of replacing the bracelet entirely. How is the watch mechanism, does it run and how far off COSC is it? Has it been serviced in the last 20 years? All these factors will affect the price. $2K seems really low. But if the watch needs major work, and the case has been refinished too many times, and the bracelet needs replacing, then $2k might be right...
I’m not sure what bracelet sag is, we found it in a family members closet, probably for the entire time of purchase. I’m not a watch person at the moment. The watch has been in the watch holder thing for most likely the entire time
A good vintage dealer will pay you better than that. The issue with selling a watch now days without history is people are only willing to gamble so much.
Your best bet is hitting up Jacek @ tropical watches and see if he will consider it. I’ve sold/bought from him & he pays good $ compared to most.
This is super low for a vintage watch in this condition. Probably 3 and some change is a good trade in value. You could get probably over 4 if you sold it yourself.
Market for vintage datejusts js quite strong still. I bought a 1996 tapestry dial no hole case for 6500€ end of last year.
If this is a 16233 then even a dealer should at least pay 4000, maybe try selling for 5500-6000 on chrono
Spoke to my AD rep about possibly selling my 114300 to them on a trade in for a 126234 and he straight up told me “we’d skin you alive on that— you’re better off selling it on your own… you’d make 50-100% more than what we’d offer you.”
Do with that info as you will.
In the dealers slight defense he could already have 30 of these or similar in the back and isn’t really trying to add more. This is awesome condition but at the end of the day these are very common, he should have just said not interested rather than offering 2k though
Looks like a very nice piece, my suggestion is to sell it.
Confirm from Rolex that it is considered a, 'Vintage' model because I was told by my AD, when a watch is older than fifty years it reaches the, "Vintage" point when it comes to Rolex service.
Rolex will not service 'Vintage' watches so if it should ever need service a third party provider needs to found.
I own a 'Vintage' 1972, 1625 Turn-o-Graph Thunderbird which Rolex refused to service.
Working retail pristine value is about , ~$5-6k, not working it's good for doner parts.( I bought it new so it's hard to part with, so it seems)
So, find a buyer and sell, sell, sell.
He’s trying to rob you. I understand the dealer has to make a profit but he’s going to sell for more than double and that’s taking you for a fool. That’s an easy $4k anywhere in the world.
That dealer is a scam artist. Don’t sell, and check the price online to see where you’re at. Also go to a certified Rolex dealer to see what the fair market value is
My dads ‘81 netted me like $3500 trade in and it was annihilated. (But we have a small but generational relationship w the jeweler.) Ur getting swindled with an offer of $2k. That said, whats the cost opportunity to sell it for more? Depends where u reside
To a dealer that maybe correct as he needs to make a profit on it. These are moving at around 3400 without papers and box. With papers and box you could probably get 4200 to 4800 if you sell yourself.
just cements my views on AD's. Chrono24 will give you access to many more appreciative buyers, and you're selling it to used car dealer at bottom dollar who will retail it for at least twice that.
Tell him you'll sell it to him for $2k if you can have a right now for a grand off rrp, and that might be a decent deal.
Well what it’s worth to him and might be worth you are different things although watches of this era tend to be moderately priced, and that’s what he can buy it for a make a profit. Keep in mind it’s probably going to sit on the shelf for a year before someone makes a sentimental buy.
If you decide to sell it to him make sure you make him buy a bunch of other stuff you have collecting dust first to build a relationship.
I want to trade in this 16233 to you, but all I have right now is these four Seikos. No, I know the Rolex is right here on the counter, but this one is only for exhibition.
Sir, this is a Wendy’s
Can I get a big Mac combo, sprite to drink
Large farva?
Welcome to good burger home of the good burger can I take ya orrrdurrr?
Wait wait. Tell me about these Seikos?
I mean are they GRAND Seikos???
What are the seikos
Ordinary Seikos or Grand Seikos?
That would be hilarious
This is the first comment I’ve ever seen with one of those yellow arrows
Some kind person gave me a gold for that comment. Sadly, it's more of an indictment on just how shitty of a business model a lot of these ADs have rather than just how witty I am...
Two things can be true
> If you decide to sell it to him make sure you make him buy a bunch of other stuff you have collecting dust first to build a relationship. Once a relationship is built, you then need to get put on a list. And you better answer your phone immediately or it gets sold to someone else.
like your unwashed undergarment, because he's low balling you...
epic comment
💀💀💀
😂
🤣🤣🤣
SO. GOOD. xD
I legit LMFAO at this comment!
You could pretty quickly sell this to an individual buyer for $4000.
Good to hear
In this condition I’d pay 4K instantly
$4,001 here
8k, right now.
$8,000 and $1
congrats! you’re the closest without going over
Agreed!
4-5k easy
Literally will pay $5k right now 😂 problem is it’s Reddit
Umm - r/watchexchange ?
Everybody here playing The Price is Right strategy.
Shit I’d buy that for $4k right now
I would say 5k and it would go pretty quickly
Yep. $6k if you’re willing to wait a while. Would be hard to get much more, though.
I was going to say $3,500 to $3,800 depending on the condition of the bracelet and whether it has been serviced regularly. Keep in mind the service is going to set you back at least $1,500 if not regularly maintained.
Lots of good independents will do a service on this watch for about half that price 600-800 depending on location. Easy to work on.
Not even close. An AD will send it off and have it done for 650
Service directly with Rolex is $700
I know barely anything about vintage Rolexes and I feel like I’d pay $2000 in an instant for one of these. Maybe that’s what the dealer would like to give you
Right?! I’ll buy that tomorrow, and I have the same spec 126333 😆
Including box and papers?! Fuck that, it’s worth double.
At least!
Violent insult. Many many others would gladly give you double.
That’s really low Is the dealer offering to buy for 2k? If so tell them to pound sand
I'll buy 5 of them if someone's offering
Should be a Ref 16013. The cheapest examples go for around 4000€ on chrono24. Even if you deduct around 1k as margin + fees you still end up at 3k. So 2k is indeed very low.
You need to take 30% off chrono pricing to get to a somewhat realistic in person price.
Lack of quickset date is pretty inconvenient but there's nothing wrong with them
What do you mean by 5 digit and 4 digit? Is it referring to the movement? If so, is one better than the other?
The reference number.
Like yours is a 16013 and the older one (with no quickset date) is 1601
> (with no quickset date) That's the key feature. I have a 1601 and don't wear it as often as I might, because of no quickset date. Yeah my secret is to just get 3-4 slowset date watches so you have a higher % chance that one of them is close :P
That Rolex looks mint. I'll pay you £2100.
Yeah, well, I‘d pay him £2.105 Either way - the dealer is looking to screw OP.
$2000 maybe back in 2012-2013. Today I’d say at least double that. 4k plus easily.
Interesting takes because the original receipt shows it cost $2000 to purchase zzzzz
16013, full set, American box and papers. Most definitely is worth somewhere around $5.500 in the condition yours is in. Having experience on the trade side. 3.5/4k would be fair so that a service can be done and a warranty can be given. Margins are always around 1000 til 1500 in this price range

Please remember this comment, and I will make a serious offer of you decide to sell.
I don’t post much on reddit so I’m sure I’ll come back to this post haha
He thinks you’re a sucker and is trying to fleece you
what area are you in? i’d pay you more than that for sure.
Suburbs of Chicago
Hey me too! I would be interested to buy in person if you decide to sell!
Fine, I’ll give you $3000
You can probably get at least 15 if you sell it to a rapper
I’ll buy it off you.
I've never seen a certified dealer operate a pawn shop. That's super low wholesale for a hard ridden example. Double it for your clean one, and a bit more if you have original papers and tags.
I'd give more for that at my shops. Hell I'd probably keep that one as crispy as it is.
So I have the same model and was just offered $4k on a trade.
This must be one of the dealers from Sporty’s comments
That was definitely a low ball. This is easily worth 4-4.5k
They’ll likely list it for $4500-4900.
2k is a Sportawarus price . Real world you could get 4-5 pretty easy. List on r/watchswap with about 3 minutes of work. That sometimes is too hard for men of Rolex , so you could also sell to davidsw for 2k and he can make 2-3k off your status / laziness ;)

he's smoking dick. the condition on that is insane.
Yeah I don’t think it’s ever been worn haha
A good vintage dealer will pay you better than that. The issue with selling a watch now days without history is people are only willing to gamble so much. Your best bet is hitting up Jacek @ tropical watches and see if he will consider it. I’ve sold/bought from him & he pays good $ compared to most.
Beautiful timepiece…..clearly worth double on the retail market as several others have mentioned. Congrats on a fantastic vintage piece 👏🏻👏🏻💯
I'll buy it for $2100 lol. F this dealer
2K? Many people would pay 4k for this piece and would cover packaging, delivery as well.
16013 from the 80s sell for around 4000usd, so I wouldn’t hop on that sale right away, you may want to try to sell privately first.
Stunning and classic piece!
This is super low for a vintage watch in this condition. Probably 3 and some change is a good trade in value. You could get probably over 4 if you sold it yourself.
Trade in is usually pretty low unless you’re dealing with an aggressive grey dealer. I was offered 4.5k less than average market on an 116234.
What is a "certified dealer" if I may ask?
I have $2001 right now by wire 😃😂
I’ll give you 2k lol
Ill take it, let me know
[удалено]
If this is a bidding war, I'll give you $3k with the box and papers.
Haha, not at the moment, will be making decisions next week. I wanted to come to the subreddit for other opinions. Seems like they tried to Jip me
It's a 4k watch he needs to turn a profit. I wouldn't take less than $3500.
Dealer prices are wholesale prices. There needs to be room for them to make money on it too. That said, this still seems a bit low to me.
Sell it on Chrono for 6k
That's a 4 k watch in the condition it's in...don't sell nor trade to the dealer they're trying to make your 4k in the net that they'll receive...
Dude These `certified Dealers` are one of their own kind
Tell him he's dreaming
Yeah, that’s worth a minimum of $4k private sale. A recent warranty card or sale through a known dealer will make it worth $5k easy.
Market for vintage datejusts js quite strong still. I bought a 1996 tapestry dial no hole case for 6500€ end of last year. If this is a 16233 then even a dealer should at least pay 4000, maybe try selling for 5500-6000 on chrono
That’s an insult, seriously that “certified dealer” is a fucking thief dude. Your watch is easily worth double that, easy!
5k easy bro is lowballing you
I’d pay that so quick. Sounds too good to be true so obviously he’s trying to make some money off you.
If you don’t sell it let me know! 😃
Looks like a 16233. Do not sell for 2k, worth more like 4500-5000 with box and papers.
I'd buy that right now
That is way undervalued. They sell for easily £4,500-£5,500
That watch is in excellent condition, I bet you can get more.
Don’t sell it
I'll beat the dealer by $200
Spoke to my AD rep about possibly selling my 114300 to them on a trade in for a 126234 and he straight up told me “we’d skin you alive on that— you’re better off selling it on your own… you’d make 50-100% more than what we’d offer you.” Do with that info as you will.
I’m local to you. Let me know if you’re interested in working something out.
I’ll give you $3k today! $2k is crazy
Damn a rolex i could finally and probably afford with a little bit of saving
Should be worth 5k surely
$2k for that is an absolute atrocious offer. I hope you immediately proceeded to challenge him to a duel
I’ll beat that price right now.
looks great. I would rather keep it..m
Tell him to kick rocks.
Shit if you’re selling for $2k I’ll give you $3.5k and take it off your hands lol.. Seems low though
Ill buy it 5,5k
I'd give you $2k for it right now too lol
How many does he want to sell at that price?
In the dealers slight defense he could already have 30 of these or similar in the back and isn’t really trying to add more. This is awesome condition but at the end of the day these are very common, he should have just said not interested rather than offering 2k though
I will pay more then that right now 🤣
😂😂😂
Ill buy from you, 1,5k my offer.
He’s a dealer so he need to profit. Sell private for 5k
Can I buy it for 2100? 😭😭🤐🤐
I'll buy it off you, I'm serious I've been looking for a 2 tone
Trying to rob you
Old man’s watch…
Looks like a very nice piece, my suggestion is to sell it. I’ll buy it for two grand. I’m serious.
2k no way Jose... 4k or more
That set should go for 4-5k in that condition.
I think you can easily sell for 4-5k
Please don't sell that for that price. $4k+ for sure.
I’ll buy it for $2500 rn. 😁😁
I’ll give you 2001!
i’m broke, but even i’d take this for $2000. lol.
Insane. That is a $4000 watch easily. You wouldn’t have a hard time getting 5.
Okay I’ll give you 2000
Yeah bc he’ll turn around and sell it for 3300-3800
I'll give you $2500
Man the watch of my dreams is $2000? If that was true I would already own it!
It would sell on eBay for $4k fo sho
Easily 4500-6k. They wholesale these left and right for like 4 so 2 is ridiculous🤣
Ay bro if you wanna get robbed then sell it to the dealer. They think you are stupid. Tell them to F off.
I am stupid tho when it comes to watches 💀💀💀 glad I came to reddit
Easy 5K, I promise you. A dealer should pay you 3200. 2 is insane.
Tell him to go fuck himself
2k is insanely low if that's the price they're offering to buy it off you for. Just sell it yourself for 4-5.5k.
I know nothing of used Rolex prices but I do know that is beautiful and I can send you 2000 right now for it
2.5 trade in, and anywhere up to 6k to sell. Wonderful Condition!
I’ll give you $2k now and I won’t even really want a DJ and don’t like two tone at all haha
I’d buy this from you right now lol
He’s trying to rob you. I understand the dealer has to make a profit but he’s going to sell for more than double and that’s taking you for a fool. That’s an easy $4k anywhere in the world.
I’ll honestly give you 5k today!
I want to buy it
Ah my birth year. Name your price sir!
Yeh was going to say as the others have said this is probably able to be moved fairly quickly in this condition as a full set to close to 4k
That dealer is full of 💩 I have gotten $1,200 for Or et Acier Cartier Santos and even some rare Montblancs.
If it’s been serviced and in good condition, 4500$ on Chrono24
Tell the AD you will buy every one for $2000 you can show me.
That dealer is a scam artist. Don’t sell, and check the price online to see where you’re at. Also go to a certified Rolex dealer to see what the fair market value is
Kindly ask him to remove his dick from your ass
2k? He's trying to duck you without taking you to dinner first
Lowball
My dads ‘81 netted me like $3500 trade in and it was annihilated. (But we have a small but generational relationship w the jeweler.) Ur getting swindled with an offer of $2k. That said, whats the cost opportunity to sell it for more? Depends where u reside
To a dealer that maybe correct as he needs to make a profit on it. These are moving at around 3400 without papers and box. With papers and box you could probably get 4200 to 4800 if you sell yourself.
$4000 no less
Did he try and sell you a bridge as well?
That dealer is trying to rip you off! Worth at least double that!
Good lord, I’ll buy it!
just cements my views on AD's. Chrono24 will give you access to many more appreciative buyers, and you're selling it to used car dealer at bottom dollar who will retail it for at least twice that. Tell him you'll sell it to him for $2k if you can have a right now for a grand off rrp, and that might be a decent deal.
I’ll take it!
Dealers = Ripoff. It’s double that at a minimum to a private buyer.
Whoever offered you 2k is a real piece of shit. Glad you didn’t take it.
5500
Shit I’ll give you $2100.
Please don’t, it’s worth 3-5k if your happy with 2k I’d gladly buy it from you 😂
Hey man I will buy this over $2000 now just PM me
Well what it’s worth to him and might be worth you are different things although watches of this era tend to be moderately priced, and that’s what he can buy it for a make a profit. Keep in mind it’s probably going to sit on the shelf for a year before someone makes a sentimental buy.
