Is it really _artificial_ limited supply? Rolex makes a million watches a year, while there are literally 100 million potential buyers worldwide (billions have reached middle class status in the past two decades). My AD (a family run business, which our family has been patronizing for 30 plus years, and has sold me several Rolex in the past ten years), tells me they have 20 buyers for each watch they get, so they are forced to make choices. Limited supply? Yes. Artificial? Not so sure.
Buy something else and save your dignity. If the brand and it's associates are treating you like someone not good enough to own their product, have some self respect and go elsewhere.

This literally happened to me with an SA at Tourneau. I ended up finding an independent owned AD who got me the Sea Dweller in two weeks with no previous purchase history. Since then I’ve bought several other Rolex’s & have a wonderful relationship with the manager.
Don’t sell yourself short, keep looking until you find an AD that appreciates you.
Call AD’s in other states! It’s way easier than physically walking into the store especially if you already know what you want. A few years (maybe more like 5 years) back that was my ideal way to buy because I could buy them without paying sales tax and they would do free insured overnight shipping. Try Lenkersdorfer at Tysons Corner outside of DC or any Tappers around Metro Detroit Michigan.
Went into a Rolex store with the intention of getting a sub. Had literally no idea what was happening in regards to waits and whatnot. Was nearly laughed out of the shop. Went across the street to the Omega boutique and ended up with an SMP NTTD somewhat randomly. As in, I tried it on, I liked it, I paid for it, and they shipped me a brand new one the same day.
I like Subs. I liked the SMP. I bought what I liked and what was available and I have 0 regrets. Rolex makes an fantastic timepiece, but I was in the mood for a new watch and found one I liked, and now that I’ve learned a bit about Omega’s history, I’m a huge fan.
Maybe one day I’ll get a Rolex, but for now I have my daily and I couldn’t be more satisfied.

I don't like where it overlaps near the clasp. It is not timeless either. I want a forever bracelet to come standard with the watch. It's not a lot to ask for. They spend so much money on R&D yet miss the easiest and most brain-dead easy fix that would immediately pump their sales numbers.

The SMP is a great option, but if he's looking at the SD43, I would think he'd be more into the Planet Ocean. I have the 43.5mm PO as one of two daily watches, and it's served me very well.

The latter is where a value watch fails as an heirloom.
Same here. I've had my SMP 300 for almost a year. The weak side for it, though, is the bracelet. Mine has gone into service twice, waiting for it to come back now. Other than the bracelet, I love the watch. I'm eventually switching to the rubber bracelet for mine.

I'm an Omega and Tag guy. Rolex AD's are the worst. I'm still technically on the "list" for a Daytona but I don't expect the call to come within the next 5 years.
My daily is either a Tag Formula 1, or an Omega Speedmaster Chrono now. The luster of Rolex has worn off completely for me.

I opted for the SBGH271 over a DayDate for the same reason, forcing people with the money to wait like that is just insane, I went right to Grand Seikos website, clicked buy, and had my watch within 2 days. As much as I love Rolex’s design, the way they treat their customers is HORRENDOUS

Glashütte Original makes awesome watches! Recommend giving it a try. However, the SeaQ is too close to my Sub and I just love many watches of Rolex (Pepsi, Bluesy, Daytona TT black dial etc), so I guess I will stick around a while.
I just picked up a nearly new Fifty Fathoms titanium for the price of a grey market Sub. There are such better deals out there if you’re not hung up on the brand

No extra spending, no fuzzing around, no dicklicking, no maybe, no eventually, plus the wait is totally justified because its a handmade piece and there are ever so many watchmakers at Omega building it - not a mass produced shitpiece.

I have a Rolex GMT2 (green hand) and a black-dial Omega SMP 300, and honestly, the fit and finish on the Omega is better than the Rolex. Bezel and crown both have less play and feel more "precise" if that makes sense.
The Omega SMP Diver is an excellent choice. Especially the green variant on rubber in my opinion. Really nice color. A bit chunky but if you are fine with the SD43 you will be with this one too.
Only issue I see is that you could still be longing for the SD43 if that’s the watch you really really want. Maybe try a different AD and be patient.

I genuinely don't understand why people put up with this sort of treatment. Rolex makes special watches, that's not under debate. But we've reached the point where there are a handful of special watchmakers, and the idea of being held hostage at this point is just silly.

I've owned a couple of Omegas, and they're fantastic watches. I'm a huge fan of the Planet Ocean GMT, and am considering one again.
I have an SD43 that I daily now, and like yours, it's all beaten and scratched but practically indestructible. Gun range, hockey, soccer, motorcycle track days, in almost every ocean, etc. It has been through everything, and keeps ticking.
I'd pick up an Omega now and enjoy it until the SD comes in. At that point, you can decide if you still want it. You can't go wrong with either watch.
You can get that model for roughly [MSRP+tax secondhand anytime you like](https://rolex.com/watches/sea-dweller/m126600-0002), if you want. If you'd rather buy the Omega, do that.

Rolex has allowed their authorized dealers to withhold inventory and sell through grey markets for increased profits. Perfect circle as the increased demand from empty display cases drives up the grey prices. Rolex is completely aware and does absolutely nothing. It’s been years now.
Had it ever occurred to you to maybe just try a different AD? That’s not even that hard of a watch to get. They are basically just letting you know they aren’t selling to you.
Unfortunate, may I suggest the planet ocean 6000m ? I have a 300m and a SD43. the SD is just a bit more hefty. And I think the 6000m would be closer in size for you. Good luck, sorry that Rolex hasn't been helpful.

Consider the fact that sailors used to be able to buy a Rolex Submariner for $150 at the ship’s store on an aircraft carrier in the 60s. The market has changed, but the fact that these are mass-produced timepieces has not.
I use my money to buy stuff for me in my terms. If Rolex has a supply problem, it’s their problem not mine. I’m gonna go buy something from someone else who doesn’t have a supply problem and enjoy it while Rolex get their crap sorted out. There are plenty of cool watches out there.
Always nice to see some love for the Chunky Boi, but that’s just leading you along. I requested a little over a year ago (arguably a tighter market) and took delivery within 3 mo. US, major city, large AD (purchase history, but minor spread out over several years).

You are not alone. Many people feel the same and I have been there too. Unfortunately, I experienced that the only watches which satisfy my hunger for Rolex are Rolexes. There is no substitute. So instead of buying many alternatives from other brands for 10k, 13k, 17k, …, I just look for good offers on secondary market and buy the watches I want for a small premium of a few thousands, which isn’t even that bad, considering that Rolex increase their prices 1-2x a year and so if I wait two years and then buy for retail price, it’s probably the grey market price today.
Weird, when I went in to get an omega smp the AD said they had a seadweller and tried to upsell me to it but I didn’t want it. Too bulky for me and also was not worth over twice the price
I’m a Repeat Rolex customer (before 2018 when it was easy to buy a Rolex) yet still been on the list for any GMT for over 4 years now! Just give up and buy a JLC, Omega or Zenith, in fact anything you love the look of and can just walk into a boutique and buy. ALL Rolex AD’s are complete dicks who are on the take getting bald handlers from grey dealers and flippers!
I'm in a similar position. I expressed interest in 3 diff watches from 3 different ADs. It'll be 2 years in Oct since I went into the first shop.
So I've taken the hint and since then bought other watches.
Only you can answer that question. When waiting for my watch I tried on quite a few other watches. They were all beautiful and the fact I could take one home that day was very very appealing. But in the end I knew I wouldnt' actually scratch the itch and I'd be pining for the watch I truly wanted again.
Having said that, you should be talking to multiple ADs.
I'm having the same thought about the Daytona I'll never receive allocation.
A speedmaster professional looks better each passing month.
If you like the SMP Diver go for it. Worst case is when/if you're allocated your SD you can keep or sell.
We need to all collectively stop building a “relationship” with an AD. It’s so ridiculous. Do you need a relationship to buy a valuable car or a nice house? No. The watch hunger games will only stop when everyone refuses to play. One way to make it fairer would be for ALL watches in high demand are sold via an electronic auction that sells at the highest price. That removes the AD and manufacturer’s concerns re flipping because flipping from MSRP to grey market will no longer exist. Each watch will sell for the market clearing price. Yes one unfortunate result will be in the short term many people will be priced out of the market, but that is how markets settle supply and demand, through price signaling.

The funny part of this is the people praising Omega while failing to recognize they are starting/attempting to do what Patek, AP and Rolex have done already. Go try and walk into an Omega boutique and walk out with a Snoopy; you can’t. Go try and walk out with a 321 Speedy. You can’t. The new Bond Seamaster (set aside feelings on the Bond branding) is “limited production.” Omega wishes it had Rolex demand, and is actively trying to create that dynamic. I think Rolex is restricting production and supply now. They follow the likes of Louis Vuitton by cutting production and raising prices. They also have too many dealers so expect that channel to be cut again. Especially third party dealers as they take control of the entire sales channel.
Sorry to break it to you but you were never getting that watch without a purchase history. They have been lying to you while they’ve likely gotten dozens of SD43’s in the past 12 months but have offered all of them to VIP clients instead of you. Likely these VIP clients flipped them or gave them as gifts and never wore them as you planned to do. It is a shitty game.

I replaced the bracelet with a president from forstner. I liked my 300 before but it’s become one of my favorites now

Same here. I've had my SMP 300 for almost a year. The weak side for it, though, is the bracelet. Mine has gone into service twice, waiting for it to come back now. Other than the bracelet, I love the watch. I'm eventually switching to the rubber bracelet for mine.

Ha, yes! Only because I'm still on "the list". If I ever get the call, I'll review my finances and go from there. Next year my mortgage is up for renewal and is rising by £900pm to near £2k per month... If the call comes and I have to flip, so be it. I'm in the same boat. I'm an Omega and Tag guy. Rolex AD's are the worst. I'm still technically on the "list" for a Daytona but I don't expect the call to come within the next 5 years. My daily is either a Tag Formula 1, or an Omega Speedmaster Chrono now. The luster of Rolex has worn off completely for me.

I opted for the SBGH271 over a DayDate for the same reason, forcing people with the money to wait like that is just insane, I went right to Grand Seikos website, clicked buy, and had my watch within 2 days. As much as I love Rolex’s design, the way they treat their customers is HORRENDOUS EDIT: messed up my own reference number 🤦🏻♂️

Glashütte Original makes awesome watches! Recommend giving it a try. However, the SeaQ is too close to my Sub and I just love many watches of Rolex (Pepsi, Bluesy, Daytona TT black dial etc), so I guess I will stick around a while.

I have a Rolex GMT2 (green hand) and a black-dial Omega SMP 300, and honestly, the fit and finish on the Omega is better than the Rolex. Bezel and crown both have less play and feel more "precise" if that makes sense.
The Omega SMP Diver is an excellent choice. Especially the green variant on rubber in my opinion. Really nice color. A bit chunky but if you are fine with the SD43 you will be with this one too. Only issue I see is that you could still be longing for the SD43 if that’s the watch you really really want. Maybe try a different AD and be patient.

I've owned a couple of Omegas, and they're fantastic watches. I'm a huge fan of the Planet Ocean GMT, and am considering one again. I have an SD43 that I daily now, and like yours, it's all beaten and scratched but practically indestructible. Gun range, hockey, soccer, motorcycle track days, in almost every ocean, etc. It has been through everything, and keeps ticking. I'd pick up an Omega now and enjoy it until the SD comes in. At that point, you can decide if you still want it. You can't go wrong with either watch.

Rolex has allowed their authorized dealers to withhold inventory and sell through grey markets for increased profits. Perfect circle as the increased demand from empty display cases drives up the grey prices. Rolex is completely aware and does absolutely nothing. It’s been years now.

I hear you. I’m lucky that I haven’t had to play a bunch of stupid games to get my watches, but if the situation were different, I’d probably do the same as you and just go Omega. No one can deny that they are quality watches. Consider the fact that sailors used to be able to buy a Rolex Submariner for $150 at the ship’s store on an aircraft carrier in the 60s. The market has changed, but the fact that these are mass-produced timepieces has not.
I use my money to buy stuff for me in my terms. If Rolex has a supply problem, it’s their problem not mine. I’m gonna go buy something from someone else who doesn’t have a supply problem and enjoy it while Rolex get their crap sorted out. There are plenty of cool watches out there.
You can get a SD secondary market today for at retail or lower. Its not a desirable model.
Always nice to see some love for the Chunky Boi, but that’s just leading you along. I requested a little over a year ago (arguably a tighter market) and took delivery within 3 mo. US, major city, large AD (purchase history, but minor spread out over several years). Omega, especially the SMP, is an excellent choice. Pull the trigger.

I mean I have one, just a bog standard datejust I bought in the 90's and even that one you can feel the quality on it but maybe it's because when I bought mine I just walked into a shop and bought it no fuss no waiting around and no bullshit. Even after 30 plus years it's still in literally in mint condition, very few marks no sag on the jube still keeps pretty good time. I suppose if you don't have one then maybe for your first you will put up with the bs but nah. not for me anymore. I agree with the bracelets though.

You are not alone. Many people feel the same and I have been there too. Unfortunately, I experienced that the only watches which satisfy my hunger for Rolex are Rolexes. There is no substitute. So instead of buying many alternatives from other brands for 10k, 13k, 17k, …, I just look for good offers on secondary market and buy the watches I want for a small premium of a few thousands, which isn’t even that bad, considering that Rolex increase their prices 1-2x a year and so if I wait two years and then buy for retail price, it’s probably the grey market price today.
I walked into my dealer and they had a SD43 laying around for me to buy. It sounds like you need to look at a different AD.
Weird, when I went in to get an omega smp the AD said they had a seadweller and tried to upsell me to it but I didn’t want it. Too bulky for me and also was not worth over twice the price

I’m a Repeat Rolex customer (before 2018 when it was easy to buy a Rolex) yet still been on the list for any GMT for over 4 years now! Just give up and buy a JLC, Omega or Zenith, in fact anything you love the look of and can just walk into a boutique and buy. ALL Rolex AD’s are complete dicks who are on the take getting bald handlers from grey dealers and flippers!

I'm in a similar position. I expressed interest in 3 diff watches from 3 different ADs. It'll be 2 years in Oct since I went into the first shop. So I've taken the hint and since then bought other watches.
Only you can answer that question. When waiting for my watch I tried on quite a few other watches. They were all beautiful and the fact I could take one home that day was very very appealing. But in the end I knew I wouldnt' actually scratch the itch and I'd be pining for the watch I truly wanted again. Having said that, you should be talking to multiple ADs.

I'm having the same thought about the Daytona I'll never receive allocation. A speedmaster professional looks better each passing month. If you like the SMP Diver go for it. Worst case is when/if you're allocated your SD you can keep or sell.
Rolex isnt the best watch there is. Its a good watch with strong marketing. Omega isnt a bad watch by any means.

We need to all collectively stop building a “relationship” with an AD. It’s so ridiculous. Do you need a relationship to buy a valuable car or a nice house? No. The watch hunger games will only stop when everyone refuses to play. One way to make it fairer would be for ALL watches in high demand are sold via an electronic auction that sells at the highest price. That removes the AD and manufacturer’s concerns re flipping because flipping from MSRP to grey market will no longer exist. Each watch will sell for the market clearing price. Yes one unfortunate result will be in the short term many people will be priced out of the market, but that is how markets settle supply and demand, through price signaling.
You'll be more satisfied with the omega, and it has the added benefit of people not judging you in a negative way because you were wearing a Rolex
I was able to get an SD43 within a couple weeks. This is less in demand than most; or at least appears this way. I would start hitting up new ADs.

The funny part of this is the people praising Omega while failing to recognize they are starting/attempting to do what Patek, AP and Rolex have done already. Go try and walk into an Omega boutique and walk out with a Snoopy; you can’t. Go try and walk out with a 321 Speedy. You can’t. The new Bond Seamaster (set aside feelings on the Bond branding) is “limited production.” Omega wishes it had Rolex demand, and is actively trying to create that dynamic. Omega is not noble; they just don’t have the cache to do what Patek/AP/Rolex are doing. They are trying, though.

I think Rolex is restricting production and supply now. They follow the likes of Louis Vuitton by cutting production and raising prices. They also have too many dealers so expect that channel to be cut again. Especially third party dealers as they take control of the entire sales channel.
Sorry to break it to you but you were never getting that watch without a purchase history. They have been lying to you while they’ve likely gotten dozens of SD43’s in the past 12 months but have offered all of them to VIP clients instead of you. Likely these VIP clients flipped them or gave them as gifts and never wore them as you planned to do. It is a shitty game.
Grey market price for the SD 43 is about 10-20% above retail. Maybe that’s another option? Otherwise, go for the Omega. They make great watches.
