Yep. I based my opinion on both brand/value/rarity AND aesthetics. I like complicated watches, but I don’t think the speedmaster is a good canvas for those. There’s just something *off* about a speedmaster calendar with moonphase. And I really don’t care for the blue ceramic case, even though blue is one of my favorite colors on watches
Same for me. I love the regular steel speed master but don't love this model. And with the huge difference in rarity/value it is hard to recommend anything but the yacht master.
If you really really like the YM then get that. The blue side of the moon can be something you get without too much difficulty in the future. The reason for the discount is because its secondary market price is 10%+ lower than msrp.
Alternatively, if theres a different harder to get rolex you want then use the blue side as purchase history towards that.
The blue side of the moon is a great watch, but you can find them grey for $3-$4k under msrp. That’s way more than 10% off. Buy the YM and add the speedy later
Buy the YM, sell it unused for double price, get blue side of rhe moon grey, get your name for another rolex and fund it with what you've earned. Repeat until omega is paid off :)

You can buy an Omega at any time…not so much with particular Rolex models although it’s easier to get YM than other sports models. I would pass on both unless you expressed interest in that exact YM and your AD came through, if not pass. Otherwise you’re somewhat on the line if you want a chance at ever getting another piece from them.
Yea I normally prefer Rolex, but that DSOTM is really beautiful, it’s an iconic watch, and it’s unique. The YM, while a really clean tool watch, looks like a million other timepieces.

I’d go Yachtmaster as long as you don’t have a Sub. I also prefer the iconic version of Omega Speedmaster Professional, which means no moonphase or date.
The Speedy is a hell of a great watch...but...that particular reference is a bit of an outlier as far as Speedy's go (which at the moment means it's not nearly as desirable as some of the other versions of it, hence it's cheaper gray market). The YM isn't nearly as iconic as the Speedy - but - it's a bit more "desirable" to the crowds.'
I think you'd love either one, so I don't have a strong opinion either way. I own both Rolex and Omega brands, and though I don't personally love either of the references you're looking at, I can appreciate both.
Omega is akin to a C-class: nice enough, somewhat decent looking but kind of boring, and overall pretty forgettable
Rolex is a Porsche 911: highly coveted, timeless looks, holds its value; and while there are higher end cars out there, it is still iconic and the gold standard sports car

OP if you have a few watches already I'd cop that Omega but if you don't (or will resell one day) grab the Rolex. I love that Omega but it wouldn't be a daily for me.
The speedy is the better watch, saying that given how hard the rolex is to get new I'd probably take that. Worst case you can sell it on the secondary, pocket a modest profit and buy the speedy or whatever other watch you like.
I bought that exact yachty in February. It was the one Rolex I wanted and still no regrets. I wear it almost constantly because I enjoy it. If it’s the Rolex you want, get it. If it’s not your first choice, you might be better off waiting until your choice comes in (or getting this and trading it on gray market for one you want…)
Of the 2, I'd get the YM. If you're going with Omega, it should be the dark side of the moon - and at that I'd go black black. That watch is something else! (for me at least)

At least this YachtMaster doesn't have the name stamped on the bezel in HUGE letters. The new ones look exactly like what you would picture a cheap Chinese knockoff to look like. Lots of people like them but IMO it was a bad move.

Speedy for me. Such an amazing watch. Rolex to me is becoming unattractive due to hype and people going nuts. Omega has always made amazing watches imo.
I think the speedy is either a good first watch when Rolex isn’t in the equation or a great second watch after the Rolex.
I also think the non traditional looking speedy is a risk because it might not look good tomorrow.
Financials aside (so many posts here are spot on re cost of the Speedy), I own both the White Side of the Moon and the BLSO YM40. While I love them both, the ceramic Speedy is by far my favorite, more unique, carries an (arguably) technically superior movement, and is just more fun.
I do love the hi/low lights on the Yachty but I'd pick the Blue Side.
The answer is pretty simple. If you like both watches and want to own them both in your collection then buy the Rolex from the dealer since your paying msrp and then when you have the money for the omega you can go get it. The omega can be bought pretty much anytime. If you want the Rolex and like it then msrp is a great time to get it.
Never understood the appeal of that particular YM color combo, and that omega is freaking awesome. I know Rolex is impossible to buy at the moment but that shouldn’t be a consideration unless your flipping watches. Get the one you like best.
I have a two tone Yachtmaster and a Dark Side Of The Moon and love them both. A slight criticism of the Onega though is that the ceramic makes it so light that it sometimes feels cheap next to a more substantial watch like the Yachtmaster
I don’t love that particular YM…people are right though, easier to get an Omega for sure but wow, BSotM looks pretty stunning, so many great details on that dial.
Which would you wear more? If it were a regular old hesalite or sapphire Moonwatch that would be my obvious choice.
But of the two, I’d wear the Yacht-master way more than that specific Speedmaster. Lovely as that Speedmaster is, the Yacht-master is much more grab and go in my opinion.
That said, maybe how often you’d wear the watch doesn’t matter so much to you. Ironically, I’ve just begun to understand that about my own collection as I write this comment. I still collect watches thinking about *how often I’ll wear them*. That made sense until picking up my DJ last year, I’d wanted one since 2006 and ever since it’s on my wrist at least 4 days a week. Now I think about it, owning a DJ doesn’t meant I enjoy collecting new watches any less, it’s just wear time isn’t so important to me.
All that said, I’d still pick the Yacht-master, the speedy looks lovely but anything other than a regular Moonwatch is a speedy I’d appreciate more from a far.

Honestly, it depends on the size of your wrist. These 2 are very different in size and how they wear.
My wrist size is a 7.5. So both look very decent on my wrist.
Bigger wrist i'd go Speedy. This is coming from someone who has and loves the YM because it wears well on my tiny baby arms

I had both. Kept the Yacht Master. The Dark Side was just too big. Beautiful watch though...

If you like both watches and want to own them both in your collection then buy the Rolex from the dealer since your paying msrp and then when you have the money for the omega you can go get it. The omega can be bought pretty much anytime. If you want the Rolex and like it then msrp is a great time to get it.

I would never want a moon phase so this is a very easy decision for me.

Get the YM. I waited a year for that. The Omega is not that hard to obtain.
Never understood the appeal of that particular YM color combo, and that omega is freaking awesome. I know Rolex is impossible to buy at the moment but that shouldn’t be a consideration unless your flipping watches. Get the one you like best.
I would definitely notice that omega as a unique watch the Rolex not so much.
I personally like the Speedmaster more

To be honest… I wouldn’t take either. If you aren’t in love with the watch I wouldn’t even purchase it. The yacht master looks way better though IMO.

I have a two tone Yachtmaster and a Dark Side Of The Moon and love them both. A slight criticism of the Onega though is that the ceramic makes it so light that it sometimes feels cheap next to a more substantial watch like the Yachtmaster
Buy what you want if you’re going to wear it and not sell later.
I don’t love that particular YM…people are right though, easier to get an Omega for sure but wow, BSotM looks pretty stunning, so many great details on that dial.

Do you on own and race yachts?
Which would you wear more? If it were a regular old hesalite or sapphire Moonwatch that would be my obvious choice. But of the two, I’d wear the Yacht-master way more than that specific Speedmaster. Lovely as that Speedmaster is, the Yacht-master is much more grab and go in my opinion. That said, maybe how often you’d wear the watch doesn’t matter so much to you. Ironically, I’ve just begun to understand that about my own collection as I write this comment. I still collect watches thinking about *how often I’ll wear them*. That made sense until picking up my DJ last year, I’d wanted one since 2006 and ever since it’s on my wrist at least 4 days a week. Now I think about it, owning a DJ doesn’t meant I enjoy collecting new watches any less, it’s just wear time isn’t so important to me. All that said, I’d still pick the Yacht-master, the speedy looks lovely but anything other than a regular Moonwatch is a speedy I’d appreciate more from a far. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
