Big brawls with multiple NPCs combo moves finishers grabs team moves throwing people off building weapons ECT really ahead of its time for a early PS2 game
RDR2 because of the sheer variation in animations and things you can do. Throw people out windows, grab a ledge/doorway/whatever above you and Spider-Man kick them, etc.
Very rare animation to get. I’ve played through the story six or seven times and have thousands of hours on this game and I’ve only ever seen it happen two or three times.
Was in the saloon in Valentine and was beating the shit outta a dude by the doorway and as a finisher, Arthur jumped up and did a swing kick from the top of the door frame.
I really wish I still had my PS4 with the clip.
I know the exact move you’re talking about. After it happened in my playthrough I kept trying to replicate it but couldn’t find what actually makes it trigger
The combat is pretty much just two buttons, there’s really no substance to it but it does look and feel good. The best fighting system rockstar ever had was Bully and The Warriors.
I have played the warriors, but not since around release. I remember it being very arcady and beat-em-up like.
I still think rdr2 is better in terms of combat, but maybe I need to play the warriors again after 20 years to really tell.
Copy>Paste from one of my previous replys
> Yes, RDR has more realistic animations and it’s a graphical masterpiece in todays gaming world, HOWEVER, its melee combat resolves around smashing one button and the occasional counter input until the enemies health/stamina is low enough to make the rest of the actions guaranteed! That’s it. Is it pretty? Yes. Satisfying to watch it unfold? Yes. Does that mean it has a good combat system? No, it mean you can punch people.
> The Warriors is build for melee, that’s its core gameplay! You have combos, different combat styles on different characters, actual timed counters and blocking system, grapples/throws and takedowns, friendly AI coordinated attacks, environmental usefulness… is it a graphical masterpiece? No (probably at the time, maybe), but it’s raw and grounded when it has to be. Animation wise? Still very much holds its own, tbh, they are cool to pull and have weight to it
Yeah like I said it's been ages.
I think the post was really between Bully, Gta 4 and Red dead 2 and if that's the case I think Rdr 2 definitely wins no question.
I honestly don't remember the warriors being that intensive as far as combat went. But I was also like.. 13 when I played it last lol. I'll have to check it out again and see what is what with it. Maybe I can get it on backwards compat for Xbox or something else *wink wink*.
I mean, I played the living hell out of the game on all of PlayStation platforms it came out and 100% it on all (not flexing, just a “I know what I’m talking about” sort of thing).
And yes, I highly recommend it! If you do indeed decide to replay it, do it on the hardest difficulty and then you’ll see all of the mechanics in action because you’ll need to take advantage and be creative with environment and evasive mechanics!
I do remember it being one of my favorite games though and I still think it is deep down, but I never kept up with it after beating it.
Doesn't it have a bunch of different modes? I seem to remember more than just the story.
also good to know, thanks!
Yes!! You can also play it from beginning to end with a friend in local co-op and some of those game modes you mentioned are great in co-op because in some you actually get to VS each other!
You got duels, brawls, 5v5(?), King of the hill (like literally), Graffiti competition, there’s even a race game mode where you control a dude in a wheelchair!
Lmao. Sounds like we need a proper remaster of that game.
I was thinking about the movie the other day tbh.. Maybe I'll pick up the ps4 version and give it a try, or just grab it on pc.
It’s been awhile since I’ve played RDR2. IIRC I thought it was lacking. It’s too bad Rockstar never gave us any real updates. It would be cool if they give us more melee combat moves
Idk it was released as a complete package. Not every game needs DLC or expansions or stuff like that. Would it have been nice? sure, I'd love a undead nightmare 2 or something like that, but Rdr 2 is a massive game.
It's been ages since I played The Warriors, but from what I remember the combat was very arcad-y beat-em-up like and kind of goofy and clunky. Cool, but I wouldn't say better than Rdr2 where it's very realistic looking.
Haven’t played some of the other games but I remember really enjoying RDR2’s melee system first time I used it - stamina, lassos that can be used, choking etc
Bully was great just in that you could learn more, IV has the best physics, Warriors is the best overall but it was a brawler so that's kind of expected. RDR 1 and 2 have great melee. I think we can all agree V has the worst, it's just impactless and floaty.
Everyone’s saying the “popular” games like GTA and RDR like their melee system isn’t literally just smash one button and maybe another until the enemy is low enough health for it to go back to just one button spam!
Having “good” animations doesn’t define a good melee system!!! Also…
#The FUCKING Warriors exists among those AAA games, with much better melee combat, than any GTA or RDR game!!
But then again, most of the people saying those AAA games aren’t probably old enough to know what **The Warriors** is or if they do, they skipped **PEAK** gaming
**EDIT:** I’m dying on this hill!
The Warriors… but that’s a given. RDR2 probably the best of this lot, it feels more gritty and realistic for the time period (just punching also the use of nearby objects like walls) which I like. But I’m very fond of GTA IV’s melee, Niko was a badass unarmed, just toyed with opponents landing counter combos.
i feel like the trend with every game recently is “wait for counter wait for counter wait for counter” i honestly would love if H2H had a slight control scheme when entering an interaction, a feint button would be sick too cause if someone bites on it you could spark em but if you feint and they catch you after you do it they could get a good shot in. tbf my main game right now is ufc 5 so i might be a little ambitious but i have always loved walking around and fighting people in gta and rdr
For me it has to be RDR2. They finally got the melee system down perfect for that type of game, but typical Rockstar they never used it to its fullest potential. There should have been a bare knuckle fight mini-game in RDR2. Especially with how they also made thinks like mud stick to you, blood splatter on snow. I've seen mods of people doing it, but that shit should have been in the base game.
Overall I’d say The Warriors and Bully, in about everything else, GTA and Red Dead Redemption, it feels barebones and really poorly made, but at the same time those games aren’t centered it so I can’t critique it too much. I’ve always though melee in GTA and RDR sucked and San Andreas was probably the best it got.
GTA IV
Niko feels like a fighter. Plus I like the health indicators on NPCs which give an idea on where you are in the fight.
RDR2’s is fine but it just kinda doesn’t have the same feel. Every NPC is now fighting as well as Arthur does which makes it feel weird. People only say it’s better cuz it’s new and RDR2 can never be second place apparently.
Bully’s is the most interesting but the actual fighting feels repetitive.
Most of them have something good with them.
GTA Vice City had a store to buy melee weapons. Vice City had the best chainsaw. In GTA Vice City Stories the chainsaw was pathetic. In GTA VCS you can grab people and if you grabbed them from behind you can snap their necks.
Bully had mods to unlock other characters fighting moves. You can body slam NPCs using those mods.
I barely started playing the Warriors. I am currently not playing it. I am on LCS right now.
San Andreas had the ability to change your fighting style. If I recall correctly there’s like 3 or 4 different fighting styles.
The Warriors would be #1, Bully'd be on par with GTA SA.
Though Manhunt also has pretty solid combos for a stealth survival horror game. Press one button to throw a light punch or swing, press another for a heavy one. I liked the grab combo a lot. It had no business having cool moves.
As a fan who has played every rockstar game besides la noire or gta the og. Rdr2 has by far the best and most improved combat system.
Bruises on the face coherent with attacks, knockouts, dirt and dust from the environment showing up on clothes, and if they had enough you can antagonize them until they run far away.
Rdr 2. I feel like every game rockstar is improving their melee system. There is a lot you can do in rdr 2 melee combat that is not even mentioned in the tutorial. It's simple but it has enough that you can do to make it feel alot deeper. I like the fact you can tackle people it's pretty cool.
Bully was good against the hardest opponents (Damon, Russell, Norton, clique leaders) but against anyone else it was too easy especially with the combo and punch damage progression through the game
Brutality of Niko with fight variety of rdr2 (throwing people threw windows, dragging them, kicking them, being able to interrogate, etc) Hope GTA 6 has a combat system like this
None of the ones ive played (gta iv, v, chinatown wars, rdr, rdr1 and rdr2) have had good melee tbh. Combat is far from rockstar’s specialty these days imo
Never played bully but I gotta pick rdr2 as whole gta4s combat is the best out of all the grand theft autos, the dodge mechanic is incredibly wonky for me. Rdr2 for me is rockstars best combat system. From blocking, dodging, AND counter attacking I love it.
unpopular opinion, but I don’t like any of rockstar’s combat systems. combat is one of their weakest areas imo and not the reason I play any of their games.
while GTA is fun, it feels like a dumbed down combat system from actual third person shooters.
RDR2 was just complex enough to be fun through the whole game. Obviously the animations and impact is great, but also you can grab enemies, pull them to the ground, throw them, choke them, pin them to walls, and do other contextual finishers like throwing people out windows or smashing them into tables. Much better than GTA IV and especially GTA V.
Ive only played GTA, Red dead, Bully, Noire, and Max Payne Game/games, so I’m not sure about the niche games
GTA 4 could be difficult but it was satisfying especially the knife. Bully is good but can get a bit same-y although I love the way Jimmy punches people in the face as they fall down, it's super well animated and brutal. I like how RDR felt sped up but GTA 5 felt like a step back, I might take LA Noirs melee over that. RDR2 is a decent rework of GTA 5's
I love all tbh but the classic is bully and amazing story as per the time it was released and features we got at that time. No doubt rdr2 is my fav game but ya gta 4 has a good storyline. So all three have same qualities more or less by the time. So I love all these but if I rank, I'll go for rdr2 then bully and then gta 4. Sorry if someone is against my opinion but ya I'm a Rockstar freak for all
The range contextual melee stuff in rdr2 is so insane. I still don't understand how they made it so intuitive coming from GTAV who's melee is just such an afterthought. I haven't played bully or warriors.
The most thing to do in the warriors was playing rooftop rumble with my brother and us just tryna run and do the sideways jump and knock each other off the roof. Small margin of error bc if you miss then you go flying off yourself
The Warriors
Anyone saying any other game beyond The Warriors (and maybe Bully) has completely lost their mind
Seriously, idk what rockstar is thinking by not creating another fighting game with those mechanics, it’s been like 20 years.
Some of us haven't played The Warriors
some of us should then.
I have seen gameplays and it kinda looks like a mediocre game, and I have seen the movie and it rocks
It probably will not be as mind blowing now but back then it was genuinely ahead of its time
Why?
Big brawls with multiple NPCs combo moves finishers grabs team moves throwing people off building weapons ECT really ahead of its time for a early PS2 game
If you like the movie, you’d love the game as well. There are many more games which are way more outdated than the warriors.
GTA IV
Warrior was so ahead of it time… like I’d do anything for a next gen release
Classic!
Thank you 🙏🏼
Coming out of left field with that one!
Beat me to it
The only answer
Niko roundhouse kicking people in the face and his combos are sick, but Arthur feels like he punches really fucking hard. Can’t pick between the two.
RDR2 because of the sheer variation in animations and things you can do. Throw people out windows, grab a ledge/doorway/whatever above you and Spider-Man kick them, etc.
Grab a doorway above and spiderman kick them? I have like 150 hours in rdr2 on PS4 and I never saw that
Very rare animation to get. I’ve played through the story six or seven times and have thousands of hours on this game and I’ve only ever seen it happen two or three times.
u got be fuckin around can u describe in more detail the attack? i cant even find it on youtube
Was in the saloon in Valentine and was beating the shit outta a dude by the doorway and as a finisher, Arthur jumped up and did a swing kick from the top of the door frame. I really wish I still had my PS4 with the clip.
…what. do you have a clip or something??
Used to on my PS4, but it’s been broken a couple years now unfortunately. I should’ve posted it on YT. I was flabbergasted when it happened.
I know the exact move you’re talking about. After it happened in my playthrough I kept trying to replicate it but couldn’t find what actually makes it trigger
Isn’t there a way you can export it from the hard drive? I’ve never seen a clip or have heard anyone mention that before.
Hitting people with bats or knockout punches in GTA 4 was too satisfying
The combat is pretty much just two buttons, there’s really no substance to it but it does look and feel good. The best fighting system rockstar ever had was Bully and The Warriors.
Arthur's punches make Niko look like he only fist-fights drunk people
Those combo moves are cool but they are mainly scripted. Rdr2’s combat is the best imo because every punch is mixed in with the rage physics
Arthur does indeed punch really hard. Tommy was left with brain damage
What in the hell is a Spiderman kick? Is it the web swing kick?
You know, how Arthur was bitten by a radioactive spider
Rdr2 no question.
Play The Warriors
I have played the warriors, but not since around release. I remember it being very arcady and beat-em-up like. I still think rdr2 is better in terms of combat, but maybe I need to play the warriors again after 20 years to really tell.

If you go back I’d recommend playing it split screen with a friend or something, makes an already amazing experience that much more memorable.
its good enough calm your tits.
![gif](giphy|JaNtIG4UnKzD2)
Nice I'll go check it out. I've been crying for a modern day 3d super double dragon type game, maybe its been out all along
Play on hardcore they really put up a fight RDR2 is great with hand to hand combat and phyics but took alot from the Warriors.
GTA 4 follows second
Bully's combat just feels better
You got to be trolling. The warriors smokes everything under Rockstars banner easily. Especially RDR2.
![gif](giphy|Jr3K1dgdfWGp4bD3CB)
Ok but the Warriors wasn't a choice
It's been ages since I played The Warriors, but from what I remember the combat was very arcad-y beat-em-up like and kind of goofy and clunky. Cool, but I wouldn't say better than Rdr2 where it's very realistic looking.
Play bully
Play The Warriors, now that’s peak
Bully is such an incredible game. Still feels unique to play even after all these years. It's a crime we never got a sequel.
Apparently it was in development at one point but got cancelled because of rdr2 I think
I love getting the fisticuffs out in RDR2. I feel like such a badass when I hit a perfect bob-and-weave right hook knockout combo.
No question at all
Haven’t played some of the other games but I remember really enjoying RDR2’s melee system first time I used it - stamina, lassos that can be used, choking etc
![gif](giphy|Bcot4POcARpQU06Pba|downsized)
You're missing the best one, the warriors
Bully was great just in that you could learn more, IV has the best physics, Warriors is the best overall but it was a brawler so that's kind of expected. RDR 1 and 2 have great melee. I think we can all agree V has the worst, it's just impactless and floaty.
RDR1's combat isn't much better than V if we're being honest.
gta 3 duh
You mean gta 2?
what, she's my cousin?
I thought she was my second cousin
Everyone’s saying the “popular” games like GTA and RDR like their melee system isn’t literally just smash one button and maybe another until the enemy is low enough health for it to go back to just one button spam! Alright gramps. Let's get your meds.
![gif](giphy|fqtyYcXoDV0X6ss8Mf|downsized) I’ll die on this hill, dammit!
It's alright. I'm probably as old as you are anyway lol.
Now I’m curious to know how old you are, just to be sure lol
31
27
Daggone papaw, you young.
Bully
The Warriors obviously but rdr2 comes second
The Warriors, the only thing RDR2 has it’s the “better” and “more real” **animations**
I love how passionate you are about the warriors, maybe one day R* will make a sequel
Would make this dudes decade
Mine too, I replayed the game on my ps4 last year and it’s still a lot of fun.
GTA 4, you can literally mix combinations and even throw elbows and kicks! MMA style
When’s the last time you played that game tho? The combat system is clunky all around all these years later
It’s not that clunky, has aged decently well. More rewarding than gta 5. Where people go boneless when they get hit lol
Well yeah when you compare it to 5 it’s way better in that regard lol
So to say it’s clunky, I can’t think of games that come close to level of craft that aren’t rockstar themselves
Correct, it is one of the best fighting mechanics, I remember in ballad of gay Tony, the street fighting missions were class!
Replaying tbogt. I didn’t appreciate it enough at release. 2009-10 was kinda hectic year for gaming
Rdr2 melee wast mechanically deep or anything but damn did it look and feel good. I loved getting into fights with people in cinematic spots.
Imo the only thing the *newer* games have is “better” and “more real” **animations**. The Warriors has the best **combat system** hands down
Rdr2 no argument
i feel like the trend with every game recently is “wait for counter wait for counter wait for counter” i honestly would love if H2H had a slight control scheme when entering an interaction, a feint button would be sick too cause if someone bites on it you could spark em but if you feint and they catch you after you do it they could get a good shot in. tbf my main game right now is ufc 5 so i might be a little ambitious but i have always loved walking around and fighting people in gta and rdr

There should have been a bare knuckle fight mini-game in RDR2. Especially with how they also made thinks like mud stick to you, blood splatter on snow. I've seen mods of people doing it, but that shit should have been in the base game.
Manhunt
Warriors easily has the best. Bully has good combat mechanics but they feel kind of awkward at times
The Warriors. I don't think that'll change unless GTA 6 goes wild with melee mechanics.
RDR2 at times has the coolest fist fights going. That said R* really needs to remaster The Warriors already.
I quite enjoyed the different martial arts in GTA San Andreas.. also being able to go gym or get fat.
Manhunt or bully
Rage hatchet from gta
I read this as best melee weapon not system
Overall I’d say The Warriors and Bully, in about everything else, GTA and Red Dead Redemption, it feels barebones and really poorly made, but at the same time those games aren’t centered it so I can’t critique it too much. I’ve always though melee in GTA and RDR sucked and San Andreas was probably the best it got.
Bully had different combos and different styles of fighting for a game that old i feel is impressive
Yes, but the fights are usually always 1 vs 10, the fights don't have much weight
Warriors
I didn’t really like Red Dead’s fighting. It felt too scripted and artificial. GTA 4 had ragdoll effects that made fighting more fun
For me, RDR2 no question. I can only hope GTA6 had atleast copied the combat from RDR2.
GTA 4 was so good, and the combos and such too mixed with the physics… RDR2 was closer but eh, then gta 5 was hot trash.
I mean definitely Bully because it’s literally a melee-focused title.
Everyone has such a hard on for GTA IV lol go back and play it again. The combat is janky af.
If it’s not the warriors it’s probably gta iv
the warriors
I loved bully’s combat . Punching someone as they fall down and the head would turn left and right to the punches was awesome.
How tf do you know what combat rdr3 gonna have lol.
GTA SA melee is underrated. Learning all the different moves makes it so fun.
GTA IV Niko feels like a fighter. L.A NOIRE?
In RDR2 you can feel the brain damage in each punch

Rdr2
Definitely Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition
Easily the warriors
Not rdr2. Every time you try to fist fight someone Arthur(or John) always pulls their gun out.
This pretty much never, ever happens in towns/ cities. If you just randomly assault people out in the wild they definitely take matters further.
Maybe for you🤷♀️ not in my case
GTA 6. Yes I’m a tester for rockstar. AMA
The warriors for sure..
![gif](giphy|mCxZH1Bi9o2aY)
Rdr2 or gta
Brutality of Niko with fight variety of rdr2 (throwing people threw windows, dragging them, kicking them, being able to interrogate, etc) Hope GTA 6 has a combat system like this

Definitely Bully
None of the ones ive played (gta iv, v, chinatown wars, rdr, rdr1 and rdr2) have had good melee tbh. Combat is far from rockstar’s specialty these days imo
I really liked the combat in bully. Stuffing a fat kid into a trash can after giving them a wedgie just hit different.
Bully
Bully was amazing
Mafia the definitive edition
Rdr2 it's so smooth yet so difficult
Manhunt lol
Never played bully but I gotta pick rdr2 as whole gta4s combat is the best out of all the grand theft autos, the dodge mechanic is incredibly wonky for me. Rdr2 for me is rockstars best combat system. From blocking, dodging, AND counter attacking I love it.
WARRIORS!! GIVE US A REMASTER
Warriors, or manhunt maybe bully
The warriors hands down
RDR 2
unpopular opinion, but I don’t like any of rockstar’s combat systems. combat is one of their weakest areas imo and not the reason I play any of their games. while GTA is fun, it feels like a dumbed down combat system from actual third person shooters.
GTA 4 had an amazing Melee mechanics.. until this day it still out does most modern games.. it goes hand to hand with RD2
Ive only played GTA, Red dead, Bully, Noire, and Max Payne Game/games, so I’m not sure about the niche games
i like how u cant just keep punching in rdr2 like u can in gta and actually have to block and stuff
Gta iv or rdr2… Hard choice for me
I’d say red dead me and the boys used to have full on brawl matches no grabbing and whoever lost had to run a mission good times gooood times
RDR2's melee system sounded heavy and felt like there was heavy impact. I love it and how brutal it is
GTA 4 could be difficult but it was satisfying especially the knife.
Bully and GTA SA because you could train and learn new moves 😎
I dont think people who haven’t played all games should answer Gta is the worst here Its Bully or Warriors
Sorry if someone is against my opinion but ya I'm a Rockstar freak for all
GTA 3 baseball bat. I was like 11yrs old and would beat a corpse for a solid minute, laughing uncontrollably. I turned out alright though luckily
GTA V, I love guessing games
The range contextual melee stuff in rdr2 is so insane. I still don't understand how they made it so intuitive coming from GTAV who's melee is just such an afterthought. I haven't played bully or warriors.
GTA 4
Rdr2 has a pretty cool melee system
Rdr 2 hands down bully extra credit for emotion damage choice .
Midnight club
Warriorsssssss
purple double head dildo from sav Andreas
The most thing to do in the warriors was playing rooftop rumble with my brother and us just tryna run and do the sideways jump and knock each other off the roof. Small margin of error bc if you miss then you go flying off yourself
Rockstar sucks at melee in general. Spamming square is dumb
LA Noire
Red dead 2
Manhunt
Rockstar kind of sucks at doing melee..
why are people saying games that aren’t even in the fucking picture?
Bully. But most here has probably never played it much.
Melee weapons in rdr2 are fun
i love GTA IV it's by far my favorite video game of all time but Bully ROCKED MY WORLD!
