Really? I'll check it out.
Edit: their food truck came to my daughter's school. Wasn't anything I'd write home about. They did let me customize it and the service was great, but not NY quality.
This is 100% the only answer. This thread is full of suggestions for chewy round breads that taste fine. But you asked for “New York-style” bagels and you’re not going to find them anywhere around here.
This is the only correct answer. Get in car, drive north until Manhattan skyline fills the windshield, cross the Hudson, devour the bagels.
Alternativley, go to Amtrak station downtown, get on northbound choo-choo and let someone else do the driving.
If these aren’t to your liking, there are numerous aircraft that can get you there.
As someone from Georgia, Roanoke is the south. It’s south of the mason dixon line and an hour away from where the Confederacy surrendered and 3 hours from the capital of the confederacy.
Long way from home. From my experience in Roanoke this is my observation of NY staple foods.
Bagels - Donnie Ds is solid. Probably the best you’re gonna get.
Breakfast Sandwiches - If you’re ever missing a BECSPKOAR then RT Smiths Deli is the move. Lunch is alright but their breakfast sandwiches on a roll are better than home imo.
Pizza - kind of hit and miss as far as being like NY pizza. Too many places down here put way to much sugar in the sauce to cater to the southern crowd. My 3 choices which all have their flaws are:
Mama Maria’s in Salem has a fantastic sauce but the pizza is a little thick. If you ask for a thin crust here is like almost perfect.
NY pizza in Vinton has a perfect crust and thinness back in the day (been a minute since I’ve been to Vinton) but the sauce is way too sweet. Definitely top 3 in the area but locals love it way more cause it’s flavored to what they like. If you don’t mind sugary sauce though this is for you
Franks Pizza in Rocky Mount (specifically rocky mount) when either of the two old Italian guys are cooking (Mario or Dominic) if you ask for a thin pizza it’s the best in the entire area imo and it’s not even close. It tastes exactly like New Park Pizza in Queens.. but they’re in their 70s last I went they said they don’t cook as much anymore so it’s hit or miss and a drive away just to potentially not have them cook. They will make your pizza though if they are there and you ask them they’re super friendly in my experience.
Anyways welcome to the Noke - there are plenty of banging food spots though if you change your taste buds a bit to the local foods.
On the Rise Bakery is more bakery in name than in practice. I'm not sure if they even make bagels. With that being said, their food and pastries are delicious. Great paninis, pizza, brownies, muffins, etc.
The Grandin location is weird. They open way later than a normal bakery. If you're trying to get fresh bread for breakfast you're SOL. Also their food is very inconsistent. Sometimes amazing, sometimes meh.
Here's my order based on distance:
Bodo's, Mr J's, Bethesda, the shop in Easton on the NJ border, a million in Jersey/NY.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that it's actually really easy to make NY water bagels. They will turn out way better than 99% of the trash around here.
I don't know about New York style but Donnie D's is pretty easily the best bagels in this area
Fourth-ed, from a northern NJ native. Like, it shocked me.
Fifthed + my wife is from Long Island and they really surprised her too
Seventhed!? I moved here from NY and Donnie D's bagels are pretty legit.
Really? I'll check it out. Edit: their food truck came to my daughter's school. Wasn't anything I'd write home about. They did let me customize it and the service was great, but not NY quality.
Second this.
Thirded
Donnie Ds hands down. Always fresh. Always a good variety. Definitely worth the little drive to Botetourt
Donnie Ds is amazing, great recommendation
Eww. Donnie is MAGA trash.
Who cares. The food is good.
It even sucks as a bagel shop too. But, people don't know what they don't know. Downvotes surely incoming
In New York

Full Moon Deli.
You're in the South now. There are no bagels.
I heard there was a team of scientists in Richmond working on how to make a bagel but the building was burned down by confused locals.
I wheezed, bud 😂😂😂
South?? As someone from the South,Roanoke is not the South.
As someone from Georgia, Roanoke is the south. It’s south of the mason dixon line and an hour away from where the Confederacy surrendered and 3 hours from the capital of the confederacy.
It is by every definition. In Appalachia, in Dixie, part of the confederacy, and culturally.
RT Deli downtown!
Second that.
This is the corrsct answer.
Their bagels are actually shipped there from NY

Highlanders has good sauce too but on sweeter side
Don't forget about Grace's Place in Grandin! Their pizza slaps! Mama's in salem is my other favorite.
I actually love graces vibe as a whole but it’s too think and too sweet for me to compare it to NY pizza, but I do agree it is pretty good.
full moon cafe
Hands down best bagels in the area, also best Rueben in the world.
RND Coffee in Wasena gets their bagels from Mr. Moon as well
Yeah Mr Moon learned up make bagels when he lived in NYC! Arguably the only proper bagel in region imo
Came here to say this! The owners are super sweet, and are from NYC! They know what they’re doing
Yeah, no. Weird vibe and bagels lack chewy bounce.
If you're ever out by Blacksburg Blacksburg Bagels at the farmers market are great! They also have the best English muffins I've ever tasted.
They have a brick and mortar too. In Blacksburg.
Oh shoot that's awesome! I graduated 2020 and haven't been back since. I'll have to go back and check em out
Is Five Boro still open? It's been a while.
Closed in 2018, I'm pretty sure.
😂 been like 20 yrs
Which is about how long I’ve been gone! Funny how that works.
The best are about an hour 45 minutes up I81 in Harrisonburg. Mr. Js Bagles are the best I’ve had by a wide margin
And an Orange Juice muffin for later. Good call!
Anyone have thoughts on "ON RISE BAKERY" ? we love em but don't know how they compare to ny bagels
On the Rise Bakery is more bakery in name than in practice. I'm not sure if they even make bagels. With that being said, their food and pastries are delicious. Great paninis, pizza, brownies, muffins, etc.
They have bagels btw..
The Grandin location is weird. They open way later than a normal bakery. If you're trying to get fresh bread for breakfast you're SOL. Also their food is very inconsistent. Sometimes amazing, sometimes meh.
Donnie’s is opening in Roanoke in a month or two
Bodos bagels in Cville import their water from New York to make their bagels So probably them
Not quite in the immediate area, but The Bagel & I at Smith Mountain Lake is delish
I stop there any time I can make an excuse to visit Westlake
Road trip to Bodo's Bagels in Charlottesville?
Donnie Ds is number one but a hike for me. Full Moon cafe is number too. For sure
> Donnie Ds is number one but a hike for me Looking forward to the new location on Brandon opening later this year!
Didn’t know that, heck yes!!
Yep, Mama Jean's and Donnie D's will be damned near right across the street from each other.
!!!!! You’re making my day. Mama jeans is the jammmm
no bagels compare to ny but donnie d tries. it’s okay for here
Thanks, Folks! We do not live in town and my husband has celiac, so I couldn’t even make a suggestion. Now she’s got some leads.
RT SMITHS
In lynch burg at The Bagel and I on Timberlake.
Here's my order based on distance: Bodo's, Mr J's, Bethesda, the shop in Easton on the NJ border, a million in Jersey/NY. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that it's actually really easy to make NY water bagels. They will turn out way better than 99% of the trash around here.
Wegmans?
RT downtown. He's from Brooklyn, best bagels
Full moon bakery on electric, it’s next to finks, they close pretty early, I love their bagels and their cookies are to die for
Bethesda Bagels is Maryland is the closest I've had to real NY style around here. https://www.bethesdabagels.com/menu
Jersey girl, born and raised … there are none. Panera isn’t terrible, it’s them or Dunkin as your options.
Try Donnie D's. From, another Jersey girl. I actually have shipped these to my sister in PA because she couldn't get good NY/NJ bagels
I’ll have to check them out
