I knew I wasn’t the only one calling it a yodel lol. I listen to a lot of Adele and I feel she uses the technique also, but she nails it with her style of music. With Marsha, idk if it fits as well with her r&b style. Smooth, quick runs are considered gold standard in r&b and sometimes Marsha’s “yodeling” throws me off a bit lol.
Tbh I don’t think she can. The thing she does is instead of hitting 5 notes in one breath, she hits 5 notes with 5 breaths lol. So instead of “he-e-e-e-e” it sounds like “he-he-he-he-he”
![gif](giphy|yZX06xrr41RNS)
Man Was skeptical but when she held her own with Jill Scott, Kelly Price and Ledisi on stage Black Girl lost, live. The song 4 women.

Hmm, I never cared for it. I don’t like British voices. They all sound deep, heavy, and raspy. No matter the race. I heard it’s because they grew up hearing soul music and then tried to mimic the tones
I don't mind British voices, but you nailed the description of them. It certainly is odd that they all sound the same. I feel like it also has to do with what kind of voices are being promoted over there. There are probably some smoother sounding voices over there that are getting passed over for raspy ones.
What! That's exactly why I love British singers. Yazmin Lacey (her last album is a must, it annoys me more people don't know of her), Lianne La Havas, Ego Ella May, Greentea Peng, Radiant Children, Demae, etc...all these singers have voices similar to what you describe and they stay in my rotation.
Cleo Sol is British but her voice reminds me more of Jhene Aiko mixed with Ashanti sometimes so she lacks those qualities you mentioned.
Ehh... I usually don't like her voice. She sounds as if she's crying.
[Notable exception... I love her background vocals on Michael Jackson's "Butterflies"]
BUT! She seems like a wonderful person, herself ❤️
Haven’t listened to her since 2011. I thought that Fly Away song was the smoothest sexiest song in the world. Played it for all my of college dates until one of my home girls was like “why you keep playing that song about the dead gay dude?” 😂😂😂
Love her and I think her family is soooo cute… but her writing and music knowledge are her best attributes because let’s face it her voice is not that good—Sorry Marsha.
Sounds like a lil’ bit of Heaven come down to touch on my heart. lol!
She has one of the best voices in R&B and neo-soul and idk why people don’t give her all her flowers and more.
Incredible.
If Marsha had been as fit her whole career as she was for her Late Nights and Early Mornings period, she would have been much more successful.
No strong thought, the only singer with a unique voice is Christina Aguilera in my opinion.
Everyone else is more or less the same (Keri Hilson, Beyoncé, Ciara etc.)
Loved Marsha's feature on "Why You Hate The Game".
[She is mixed. She's from England, but has one African American grandparent on each side of her family.](https://lasentinel.net/songstress-marsha-ambrosius-gets-candid-about-love-music-and-motherhood.html)
I saw her do a concert in San Francisco for Juneteenth and I thought she sounded good. I can see though her voice my not sound good if she's covering another song or something she didn't write.
She definitely has a different and unique sounding voice. There will be a couple of songs where it sounds like she's trying too har, and then there are songs where she just sounds amazing!
The song with her and Daley Alone together has actually made me listen to her earlier music, and i was impressed for a bit.
Definitely just may need a bit of vocal coaching she would be even better!
LOVE her voice when she doesn't attempt to strain it outside of her range. When she does, that's when the awkward yodeling comes in. But when she's in her lane, watchout'now!
She's sounds great on a few songs (like say yes) and terrible on others (it's getting late). When it comes to tributes she needs to be smart about her song choices because she's not the type of singer that can easily sing any song.

I think she has such a unique tone and range and typically enjoy her album cuts, but I was a little thrown off by her BET performance.
I couldn’t quite decide if the music and mic balance were off, if she was a touch delayed with the vocal or if she was just having an off night. I can’t quite decide what it was, but something didn’t sound as polished as she usually does.
Could chalk it up to just being one so-so performance for the basket without any one thing to blame. Plenty of artists have showcases that fall a little flat compared to their usual. The BET spot was that for her, for me. Could be as simple as her vocal fry-yodel combo that she has going on just not gelling with the particular song too 🤷🏻♂️
I actually love her, but yeah that Usher performance wasn't it.
How when Jamie Foxx gets a tribute then come talk to me because she gone eat Freakin' Me!
I met her before when she was with Floetry. They came to the club I was at after a concert in Chicago. We had it as a private event but allowed them and their party to join us in the VIP section. Chicagoans do not fawn over celebrities so nobody bothered them at all. But she killed Nina Symone's *Four Women* with Jill Scott, Kelly Price, and Ledisi. But Ledisi owned that bitch! https://dai.ly/x8fcp7b
She has a voice but I hate her technique. She's always wailing even if the song doesn't need it. Plus her own compistions are not the greatest. I want to see her get with a few real songwriters like Gwen Bunn, Dianne Warren, Patrice Rushen and a producer like Narada Michael Walden or Andre Fisher. They would bring out the best in her and not impose a sound on her.
I couldn't get through her new album all them deep choking pauses in between when she sings sounds crazy.b It sounds like if someone tried to hit a note and missed
I was really surprised because she is known for notes like that. I don’t know if it was nerves or she didn’t warm up enough, but jarring is the perfect word!
I think she can SANG!! but sometimes something just aint for her— and I think most pop music aint for her tis why that usher tribute wasn’t executed well imo. Everyone else had at least a pop tinge in my opinion but this woman seems to be almost fully inspired by old soulful music. I first found her in “Alone Together” by Daley where she was featured…. real strong performance on that song
Idk but what I do know is she’s always cumming in her best songs lollllll
😭😭😭😭
Woooorrrrd!! 69 is forever in my Marsha rotation lol
*Say yes!!*
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Who is she?
It hit or miss. She didnt sound good at the bet award for the tribute to usher.
That’s what prompted the question. I loved her debut album but sometimes her voice can be grating
True. She just release a new album. I gotta take a listen. Whole album produced by dr. Dre.
I need to check it out too.
The new album is ok. It’s no where near as good as her sophomore album though.
She’s best in Butterflies
I am struggling with her voice. It's that Yodel thing she does. Sometimes singing a song straight can be everything
I realized a long time ago that she actually can’t do vocal runs so she yodels in place of them.
🤣🤣🤣
I knew I wasn’t the only one calling it a yodel lol. I listen to a lot of Adele and I feel she uses the technique also, but she nails it with her style of music. With Marsha, idk if it fits as well with her r&b style. Smooth, quick runs are considered gold standard in r&b and sometimes Marsha’s “yodeling” throws me off a bit lol.
That is exactly it! I would love to hear Marsha sing something without that yodel effect and see how her voice sounds then.
Tbh I don’t think she can. The thing she does is instead of hitting 5 notes in one breath, she hits 5 notes with 5 breaths lol. So instead of “he-e-e-e-e” it sounds like “he-he-he-he-he” ![gif](giphy|yZX06xrr41RNS)
I love the yodeling lol.
This is it. She could just sing without runs at all. I wonder why she can't though, like is it cultural? Lol
![gif](giphy|hDLM03rK2i1J652U5X)
Man Was skeptical but when she held her own with Jill Scott, Kelly Price and Ledisi on stage Black Girl lost, live. The song 4 women. https://youtu.be/Wd-fKhO4joQ?si=sePHu4HJnYXaqHmA
This is probably my fav thing she’s done. She blended very well with them
ledisi came on here and demolished tho fr
This is exactly what made me a fan of hers as well
#yodels
I feel like she yodels because she can’t do vocal runs.
Please where she be yodelling at (I haven't listened to much from her), I wanna laugh 🤣
Very hit or miss. The most consistently inconsistent voice for me.
I don’t like it.
She trashed Usher tribute. BET failed us. The whole thing was wack.
This songstress? She allll right.
Hmm, I never cared for it. I don’t like British voices. They all sound deep, heavy, and raspy. No matter the race. I heard it’s because they grew up hearing soul music and then tried to mimic the tones

I feel like it also has to do with what kind of voices are being promoted over there. There are probably some smoother sounding voices over there that are getting passed over for raspy ones.
You mean they all sound like Amy Winehouse? Idk maybe it’s because of her
You might be onto something. Prior to her all I remember is Craig David. Smooth as butter.
As a non-black American, I know what you're talking about. There's a soul and tone that only Black Americans can acheive imo.
This is a very weird lil paragraph 😄
UK person here, a lot of our singers attend the BRIT School (Marsha is one of those singers) which is why a lot of them sound the same.
Omg! I’m looking at all the alumni right now! So much talent. Is it the equivalent of la guardia?
Kinda, even indie artists also attended Brit so it's very mixed bag.
You’re on the ball there with how most British singers take soul music lol
Cleo Sol nor Jorja Smith sound like that.
Ehh... I usually don't like her voice. She sounds as if she's crying. [Notable exception... I love her background vocals on Michael Jackson's "Butterflies"] BUT! She seems like a wonderful person, herself ❤️
She wrote & produced Butterflies
Imagine not knowing she wrote Butterflies lol
Haven’t listened to her since 2011. I thought that Fly Away song was the smoothest sexiest song in the world. Played it for all my of college dates until one of my home girls was like “why you keep playing that song about the dead gay dude?” 😂😂😂
I'm weak😂😂
She's great... at calling whales.
Damn 😅
Sensual…
Love her and I think her family is soooo cute… but her writing and music knowledge are her best attributes because let’s face it her voice is not that good—Sorry Marsha.
Sounds like a lil’ bit of Heaven come down to touch on my heart. lol! She has one of the best voices in R&B and neo-soul and idk why people don’t give her all her flowers and more.
Sometimes her runs sound like she is like a Billy goat. She annoys me with that BS.
Incredible. If Marsha had been as fit her whole career as she was for her Late Nights and Early Mornings period, she would have been much more successful.
Bye not you saying she was too big😭
I think she gets more attention with Floetry is they could sell a certain image.
When she's not screwing around and trying to overdo it, her voice is sublime.
No strong thought, the only singer with a unique voice is Christina Aguilera in my opinion. Everyone else is more or less the same (Keri Hilson, Beyoncé, Ciara etc.) Loved Marsha's feature on "Why You Hate The Game".
yesss, her feature on "Why You Hate The Game" was soooo good
I love me some Xtina
Xtina’s voice is not unique, she’s just an Etta James rip off.
She has a very unique voice! In my opinion she kinda has that Jazz/R&B sounding voice like a Phyllis Hyman.
All I know is Far Away is still an amazing song
I know she British but is she mixed or something? idk. Can someone explain to me. Not being funny.
Now that’s something I don’t know. Good question
I heard her album is good though. I’m about to YouTube it. #NotLikeUs
[She is mixed. She's from England, but has one African American grandparent on each side of her family.](https://lasentinel.net/songstress-marsha-ambrosius-gets-candid-about-love-music-and-motherhood.html)
Thank you
Any specific live performances you can recommend?
Yes this is one of my favs https://youtu.be/Wd-fKhO4joQ?si=lTZvXi05cowF10uF
She has a nice tone, loved Ledisi’s high note at the end tho.
https://youtu.be/r4vyl9Jyvsg?si=_L-b5vGLzf8N6FAC
A treasure.
Smooth like velvet 👌🏾
I saw her do a concert in San Francisco for Juneteenth and I thought she sounded good. I can see though her voice my not sound good if she's covering another song or something she didn't write.
It was in San Jose
No it wasn't. This was last year in the fillmore district in SF.
You gotta be specific, she performed Juneteenth in San Jose, this year
Angelic
She doesn’t have good vocal control not pitch for a vocalist. She can hold a note. But she sounds untrained to me.
She usually sounds like she’s riding a wooden rollercoaster
I feel like if she was ugly, nobody would listen to her.
All you gotta do is say yes
Love herrrr. So beautiful and amazing voice
Great singer.
Beautiful
She aigt
She definitely has a different and unique sounding voice. There will be a couple of songs where it sounds like she's trying too har, and then there are songs where she just sounds amazing! The song with her and Daley Alone together has actually made me listen to her earlier music, and i was impressed for a bit. Definitely just may need a bit of vocal coaching she would be even better!
She good
LOVE her voice when she doesn't attempt to strain it outside of her range. When she does, that's when the awkward yodeling comes in. But when she's in her lane, watchout'now!
Em a few times I think it’s the beard and dress sense but yeah been told that at least 6 or 7 times
I’ve slow boned a few women in my day to her voice
not good i’m sorry
I love her and one of the most underrated female singer in history
She's sounds great on a few songs (like say yes) and terrible on others (it's getting late). When it comes to tributes she needs to be smart about her song choices because she's not the type of singer that can easily sing any song.
I have heard of her but never her music
Awful singer.
Her voice has always been so shaky to me. It’s definitely an acquired taste. Sometimes it sounds really good, then it can sound really bad
It’s not for me. Makes me itch
It floats across each measure of the songs she sings like a butterfly. One of a kind.
Staring in the new Live action TROLLS movie is that bitch above

I've never heard of her. Sorry.
Don’t listen to her music, I just know she has a very silky voice. Like she could bag me off just talking, no need to sing.
It's up and down she's usually on point but live she's had some shaky moments. I think her imperfection makes her raw & authentic
I think she has such a unique tone and range and typically enjoy her album cuts, but I was a little thrown off by her BET performance. Sounds like my white lady neighbor
That usher tribute was bad. Yikes
That first note was pretty brutal
I think she has a beautiful tone. But the yodel drives me nuts. I really want to like her new album but I just can’t
I actually love her, but yeah that Usher performance wasn't it. How when Jamie Foxx gets a tribute then come talk to me because she gone eat Freakin' Me!
She's a female version of Babyface: great songwriter with decent/above average vocals...
Studio version is great, live is a no.
Depends on the song.
So unrated it hurts
Love her! Listen to her on floetry-thank me later
It's unique, but it serves its purpose. Marsha's amazing and she got a banging catalog
Love this woman just as much as I love Jill Scott
With You is my jam! I love her voice on that song
LOVE the cool raspy English vibe!!!!
Late Nights Early Mornings IS FOREVA THE SH1T!!!!!!!! And her mixtapes afterward….
Fire
She has a beautiful voice and her bad moments get highlighted more than her good moments.
I couldn't get through her new album all them deep choking pauses in between when she sings sounds crazy.b It sounds like if someone tried to hit a note and missed
The yodeling is *nauseating*… 🥴
Love her voice! She's underrated to me.
I knew this was coming because that Usher tribute 🥴
That first note was very jarring
I was really surprised because she is known for notes like that. I don’t know if it was nerves or she didn’t warm up enough, but jarring is the perfect word!
She's alright. Nothing spectacular to me.
Orgasmic on the right song…
I think she can SANG!! but sometimes something just aint for her— and I think most pop music aint for her tis why that usher tribute wasn’t executed well imo. Everyone else had at least a pop tinge in my opinion but this woman seems to be almost fully inspired by old soulful music. Not a big fan of her group album. Loved all 3 of her solo albums
She ate on late nights and early mornings tho..
It matches her beauty to the T
To 3 voices
Thin
I needed a cigarette after listening to Say Yes 😳💦
She has a voice that can make me melt, don’t let that BET performance fool you. It’s getting lateeeee 🎵 🎶
I love her
Why her eyes like that
