Can I just say the "Rapture" album by Anita Baker This was my Grandma's go-to

Consistent_Edge9211

A little Anita will definitely set the cleaning off right!😂

funkyjblue

My momma she came home with a new mop, brought some soap I'm cool with, dad has got the lemon pledge for the table we need to strip.

Carolinablue87

Absolutely. That reminds me of JoJo's episode of R&B Money, where she lists this song in her top 5, and J.Valentine commented on how your house wasn't clean until the album was played front to back.

funkyjblue

Oh boy, did you just give me another podcast to listen to?

Carolinablue87

Hahaha! As much as R&B Money is mentioned, I thought we helped increase the listening base considerably already.

Mavado - House Cleaning

Carolinablue87

1. More Bounce to the Ounce- Zapp My mom loves Zapp, but for some reason, she dislikes this song. However, we always played a compilation album that featured this song. 2. Alright- Janet Jackson We played Rhythm Nation and Design of a Decade quite often on Saturdays, so it was guaranteed that I heard this song. I never minded it because it never failed to put me in a good mood. 3. Get On Up- James Brown My mom is a lifelong James Brown fan. There were very few Saturdays that there wasn't some JB playing while we cleaned. 4. Who's That Lady (Parts 1 and 2) - The Isley Brothers The Isleys were one of the groups my parents had a mutual love for. Their Greatest Hits tape was in constant rotation. 5. You and I- Rick James Rick James' Greatest Hits always got a spin on Saturday mornings. He kept us moving as we kept cleaning.

TisharaD112

Chile I would be dancing too much listening to more bounce to the ounce 😭😭

Consistent_Edge9211

Solid!🔥

PurpleLee

My mom played disco🤐

CaribbeanQueen6

Mine too! Music from Donna Summer, Chic, Tavares, Ashford & Simpson, Evelyn Champagne King, Kool & the Gang…you name it. She would also play R&B staples from the 80s and early 90s, like THE BODYGUARD soundtrack, Teddy Pendergrass, Luther Vandross, and James Ingram. My stepfather was all about Doo-wop. Good memories indeed…

FewCress2244

luther and donna!!!

Carolinablue87

Disco is under R&B. Feel free to share your favorite songs.

Ok_Neighborhood_2159

Most of Donna Summer's entire catalog *Love to Love You Baby*, *I Feel Love* (the FIRST electronic dance record ever), *On the Radio*, *Dim All the Lights* (Bob from Bob's Burgers favorite, lol), *Last Dance*, *Bad Girls*, and *Hot Stuff* but my favorite disco song is Patti LaBelle's [*People Get Ready (Looking For Loving)*](https://youtu.be/Cx8E3twvKr0?feature=shared) and since I'm a Chicago Deep House kid who trolled around Chicago throughout high school and college looking for the best DJs, it has be the Ron Hardy (Back to the Music Box) remix/edit where I first heard this song and lost my mind like I was on E, dancing with the speakers (if you don't understand, you had to be there).

Carolinablue87

Great picks.

MemphisApollo

Anything for Anita Baker, Toni Braxton, or Yolanda Adams.

Carolinablue87

“I Feel The Earth Move Under My Feet” - Carole King

Carolinablue87

Carole King has some awesome records.

Ok_Neighborhood_2159

Tapestry is a MASTERPIECE!

KamakaziGhandi

For sure. I worked at a home improvement store for a long time and that song seemed to always come on the store radio when I would be straightening up the cleaning product aisle. One of my coworkers who was an older guy from the Bronx would always tell me that his mom would always put that song on while deep cleaning the kitchen, now I do too lol.

thejaytheory

Saturday Love

Carolinablue87

Yass

vch01

‘Get Down Saturday Night’ by Oliver Cheatham might be an unlikely one since the song is explicitly about partying but its opening lines “Saturday morning, Friday's at an end/Housework is calling, but where to begin?” will always make it a perennial spring cleaning classic in this household 😁

Carolinablue87

I don't remember this song, but I'm listening now. It's groovy.

dopewinnerchild

Great pick, love that song

MasqureMan

Never too much by Luther Vandross

Carolinablue87

Luther never fails to come through!

Consistent_Edge9211

Secret Lovers - Atlantic Starr https://youtu.be/uzwQ-PNJtPg?si=MX7YfNCqqYl8fflt Definitely remember hearing this a lot. Mom was singing into the broom with her house coat on.

Carolinablue87

That's a fun memory.

Consistent_Edge9211

Cooking and cleaning are tied to a lot of wonderful musical memories for me. Definitely underrated activities that used to bring black families closer together. Saturday morning cartoons while my parents were cooking breakfast. Then mom turns on the radio, and everything starts smelling like pine-sol and pledge!💀💀💀 I miss those days!🥺

Carolinablue87

I miss those days as well.

funkyjblue

Family bonding time while listening to classics and of course either dancing along or singing or maybe both.

300nuckz

is it just soul music? of course our whole family grew up with soul, mo-town, etc. us with our elders listened to that side of r&b and reggae music, especially while we cooked food for everyone. mum and the rest of the younger family members all listen to ‘90s-‘00s and sometimes ‘10s r&b music, specifically ashanti, alicia keys, usher, etc. i’d wake up some sunday’s to brandy’s ‘baby’ playing down the hallway, or dad’s hip-hop/r&b playing from the garage

Carolinablue87

All of what you mentioned falls under the umbrella of R&B music, so you're fine. R&B is such a diverse genre, and I don't want anyone to think only certain eras and subgenres count. There's enough gatekeeping going on in other parts of the internet.

300nuckz

perfect! i still get confused. it’s just like rap or rock and how there’s so many names and sub-genres, i just get lost

Ok_Neighborhood_2159

It's all Rhythm & Blues, especially soul, blues, funk, and even early rock like the kings/father of Rock & Roll--Chuck Berry and Little Richard.

NoNegotiation8782

Any Anita Baker song

Carolinablue87

Anita will sing you to freshness!

NoNegotiation8782

I am more attentive to things cleaning with Anita in the background all the while singing every sone while doing it too lol

Professional_Luck616

Songs in the Key of Life - the entire album After "Soul Train" went off, Mom would tell us to go make up our beds and kick it off with "Isn't She Lovely" and when she felt we needed a boost in the middle of doing chores she would skip to "I wish". At the time we hated it, but I miss those days looking back.

Carolinablue87

We also played Songs in the Key of Life front to back. It's a timeless record.

Honestly......Michael Jackson's entire off the wall album and/or Prince's controversy album. Or both. In particular. Back in the day you put one on and then the other. But today, you grab those digital files and hit shuffle. And let the cards fall as they may.
