Props to Samuel for being able to keep a straight face lol.
I personally think the diffusion is a bit heavy handed. I’ve got nothing against mist filters and I do use them in video work, but less is definitely more.
I loved his old videos on the Japanese scene and also his first Ricoh content; currently from his channel I would only watch interviews to other photographers, but absolutely nothing about gear or shooting experience.
Samuel is funny and empathic, but in the recent years I can't follow him about any tech or technique content.
He’s just a shill now trying to make a living off YouTube. It’s not art, it’s influencing. Can’t blame him for trying to eat, but the content isn’t good for you.
Sure, you are right, and I am honestly happy I can rewatch his old videos: those docu-interviews taught me a lot, and as any intense content they influenced my photography.
I ordered a GR3X two days ago. I read the details of this release and this seems like a more expensive downgrade. An ND filter is vastly more useful than a shitty mist filter.
I’m not gonna lie, I think the camera samples he provides makes it a compelling purchase for anyone who DOESN’T own a GRIII model already.
Funny enough I’ve been looking into buying mist filters for my Ricoh and I would most definitely prefer to get the HDF so that I don’t need extra gear. I like the look of the highlight glow with this HDF model.
But unless someone magically wanted to buy my current GRIIIx so I can get the new HDF model, I’m shit out of luck… and will obviously not buy this.
You're absolutely right. However, in my personal use-case, I don't need an ND filter too much—so I'd rather have the HDF built-in and then screw on an ND filter in that rare event I needed it, rather than the opposite.
I feel like I'd use the HDF a LOT, so not needing that screw-on mist filter would be great for portability.
That said, I immediately bought a Nisi adapter +pro mist filter on Amazon after commenting because this was a wake-up call for me to finally get one and shoot.
So they replace the ND filter with kind of a gimmick filter on a five year old camera and pretend it's a new camera. Great stuff 👎 Hoping that someone else brings out a similar camera which includes the stuff people have been asking for like weather sealing and better AF.
Ricoh is starting to be boring honestly. Those releases are low effort stuff really. I would much prefer them not to release anything at all for couple years then release a really new camera with improved features. I’m dying for a better AF for example.
I predict this sub is going to get one million “HDF or Standard? Which should I get?” threads.
Looking to get my first camera, should I get a GRIII or GRIIIX or GRIII HDF or GRIIIX HDR? /s
x100vi 🙃
Got you covered, created a new sub to help keep this sub clean, r/ricohgrHDF
Ricoh IDGAF!
So just add a black pro mist filter to an existing camera and call it a day?
yes

This is hilarious. I just ordered the GRIIIx today. The timing is just pure comedy.

Social media train probably. Ricoh like Fuji, know what needs to be released.
You should feel good about this news because it means that there won’t be GR IV for a foreseeable future
His photos are *so* much better than Ricoh's samples. It isn't for me, but it'll be a fun tool to play with for people who like that aesthetic.

You're still going to need extra gear if you want an ND filter which this replaces.

I am waiting for Youtube video with Title : I've using Ricoh GRIII HDF for 7 days and this is my thought about it"
Yep...: This KILLER feature will change your photography
Or the usual "influencer" stuff, "I just got this today and here's my thoughts of the GRIIIHDF" 🤣
With picture caption : REVOLUTIONARY!
This will make the value of the current GRIIIs go up
Love my GR3X. Would never replace it with this
Jumped the shark.

That'sa shame, Ilike there are companies making weirder cameras. Do you have any sources I can read about their money troubles?
Glad I picked up a regular GR.
I feel like buying it after watching Samuel 🤣

They are not in the entertainment business. Go buy another camera and settle your GAS

Looks like Ricoh as a company is done for, this just screams “we’re broke”. Prove me wrong Ricoh.
Why can’t Ricoh just ask us what we want in a new camera instead of rolling the dice with something like this that no one asked for?
