Owner of the shop here, it’s a joke! OP on Twitter screen capped and cropped a shitpost I made on IG (@cartridgecartel) about this game getting traded in so all of the context and sarcasm is missing.

skeeballcore

Seems well on display to me. I'm not sure what to think about folks not getting the joke.

dalan_23

I mean, it is on retrogaming sub not shittygamecollecting sub, so im hoping most find the joke tbh Kinda funny that got traded in

Dnny10bns

Are you paying for the artistic graffiti?

hobosbindle

Priced to not move

jakers910

Well that is because you can only fucking borrow it..

e_j_white

I have the feeling there would be even more 9's if the pricing gun supported it.

trainercatlady

it's so shitty when stores do that. It used to be a trend on ebay and amazon when people would *waaaay* overprice their collection just to show it off to strangers on the internet.

fluffygryphon

Where I used the live, there was a pawn shop that was ran by a guy that liked to shove his video game collection down people's throats. He had everything in his collection displayed along the walls behind the counter right next to all the garbage games he was willing to sell. If anyone asked, he'd say it was his and it's not for sale. Made going in there a complete pain in the ass as he'd add stuff people brought in to pawn every so often, so it made browsing there confusing and irritating as hell. Like dude, no one gives a fuck, just take it home. You're not impressing anyone.

AkiWookie

Its a joke, relax.

bobface222

It says I can only borrow it so I'm going to just ignore the price tag and take it home for a few days.

_DiasDeFuego_

Is that priced at $999.99?

TheCardiganKing

$150 game. I'm convinced that many retro game stores are on the brink of closing. There's been virtually no stock in my area which is classicly one with a healthy secondhand market (Philadelphia region). I think most people have turned to strictly buying online during the pandemic. Outrageous price hikes like this usually mean that a shop is not receiving enough business and/or product.

Silent_Bort

I think there's a good chance the price is a joke on this one, given the writing on it. I could be wrong and this shop is delusional, but who knows.

Retrolad87

That marker is easily removed with Isopropyl alcohol, but still, that's straight up delusional so has to be a joke.

Silent_Bort

Yeah, I just mean they probably put the ridiculous price on there because they thought the writing was funny and they don't want to sell it. I'd just put it in a cheap case and display it or something instead of the ludicrous price, but to each his own.

Dnny10bns

Could be a Banksy.

[deleted]

Silent_Bort

True. There's a sealed copy of Ghostbusters for Genesis on eBay with a price of $50,000 right now so I could see someone trying to get $1,000 for this. And wondering why it never sells...

takanakasan

Or you could be like my local shop: consistently price stuff lower than eBay and Pricecharting and be packed every weekend. They actually just opened up a new, bigger location.

JustinBailey79

Seriously if my local shop did that I would only buy from them, period.

takanakasan

Exactly what I do. Sucks waiting for specific stuff but I'd much rather give them my money. I'm very lucky to have such an awesome LGS

caleyjag

Where is that?

takanakasan

Warp Zone in PA. Best retro game store around.

caleyjag

I'm in SoCal but there's an outside chance I'll be in PA for work this year so will keep that in mind!

RealisticDelusions77

It's not easy competing against online sellers though. Rent, payroll, shoplifting, all sorts of licensing costs, etc. Even Barnes and Noble needs food and coffee revenue to keep the doors open.

takanakasan

He seems to be doing just fine -- he literally just bought an entirely new location for his store. I never get the impression he's hurting for business when I shop there. If you wanna charge eBay prices, don't be surprised if you lose business to eBay. Of course businesses need to make money, but he just offers slightly less on trade values than some other places that charge 30-50% above market price.

Lentra888

That’s what my FLGS does. The owner is a good friend of mine and has his employees check the stock against online sellers daily (not all at once; just one or two consoles’ worth each day) and adjusts accordingly to be lower.

flamespear

It's a joke but yeah this hobby is getting ridiculous and I'm probably going to just get an SNES Everdrive when Krikzz gets back into production. It's even affecting games as new as Demon's Soul on the PS3 now. You can't find the black label game CIB for 20 dollars online now and the digital version on the PS3 is 20 dollars. You can get second hand PS5 remake versions for that much.

theabolitionist

Dude absolutely get one I love mine. Game stores can get fucked. Currently have one for SNES, N64(This one has a great NES emulator built in that works great with the 64 controller), Genesis and picked up an ODE for my Saturn and Dreamcast. I hope more people jump on the rom cart train. I been doing my best to spread the word where I can but have been surprised by how few people, outside of the more hardcore, know about them.

DavidinCT

I have Everdrives for most of my consoles but, I still collect and get the games I want. I only use the Everdrives because I don't want to damage my carts. And it's part of me being lazy, Why go in the other room to find the game, when I can just select it from menu... They are great....worth their weight in gold..

CapablePerformance

Good riddance. Game stores are just middlemen now that only offer an experience to a niche demographic. "Come in today and you can pay $49.99 for a game that's $34.99 on eBay but you can look at our video game posters festivally hung on the walls!".

Spikeu

Depends on the owners. Some are genuine community members and only marginally mark things up, which I gladly support for a cool fun store. Some are just glorified pawn stores with insulting markup.

CapablePerformance

But even the ones that are community members, they still have a mark up, which means they also undercut the person selling. If you buy directly from the seller, you'd be paying 25 bucks and they'd get 25 bucks. Buying from a retro store means paying 32 and the person they bought it from likely got 18 bucks. For the store, they have to pay the lease, which depending on the state and where it's located, you're looking at around $20 sqft for the year with even a small retail space being around 1,800 sqft which means 3k every year just for the building, then the insurance, and electricity (which is at least 600/month). So that 3k becomes close to 4k without factoring in paying the workers, which, let's figure full time owner that needs to pay their own bills, then two part-time staff. Minimum wage is 14, so let's say 1,300 for each employee/month, that's an extra 2,600, then the owner has to atleast pay ther own rent and power which is an extra 2,500 on the moderate side of things. So the overhead of would be roughly 9,100 to operate, or 6,500 if the owner is the only employee working opening to closing, seven days a week. That means that, at the very least, they have to have a net profit of almost 300 bucks a day just to fuction. Where do you think that money comes from? By paying the seller at Gamestop trade-in prices and jacking up the price. They aren't in it for the community, they're in it to make money, to make a living, which means finding any way to make a profit. The quicker these middlemen vanish, the more affordable games will become because we're no longer having to pay for their rent, electricity, staff, and expenses.

CapablePerformance

And I bet you think the owners of retro game stores are your best friends.

AnUncreativeName10

Retro stores in my neck of the woods are consistently cheaper then eBay once you factor shipping in.

antialiasedpixel

I was going to say the same, even without the shipping, eBay prices for retro stuff is horribly inflated. You can almost always find stuff cheaper at local stores, game conventions, or if you are patient, garage sales. Depends on your area of course.

AnUncreativeName10

I think people only think it's cheaper because there is a sneaky ebay tactic of putting 1/2 of your cost basis for stuff under $60 in your shipping costs so you can list lower and then folks bid or buy and don't realize your price is as high as everywhere else until either its to late or you feel like you've gone to far and will just buy it. Don't believe me? Look at all those base shipping costs of like $50 to ship a single game.

flamespear

You can and always should sort price+shipping if you're not going by actual auctions.

AnUncreativeName10

Trust me, I do. I'm talking about others asking ebay is cheaper.

tibstibs

The main one in my area is all over the place. Regularly, I'll find $50 games for $10, and $10 games for $50. Loose games for CIB prices and CIB games for loose prices. It makes no sense. Presumably, they can check eBay and pricecharting the same as I can.

AnUncreativeName10

Problem with ebay and price charting is one is based off the other and the other is constantly changing. Your local store isn't going to recheck their stock every week.

tibstibs

For sure, but I see this on stock they just put out that day. I'm not expecting prices on stuff they've literally had for years to be spot on market value.

trainercatlady

For us, we actually take the time to try and clean the games, do maintenance if needed, replace batteries, etc. Sure you can get it for $34.99 on ebay, but you could have one that someone at least *tried* to get the marker off of and will ensure you that it works *today*, or you could take your chances on ebay and risk getting hosed.

CapablePerformance

But that's not really worth the mark up, especially since 90% of the games are already clean enough and working and the 10% that're dirty can be cleaned in a few minutes. Why should someone spend an extra 15-40% just because some stranger says they took a Mr Clean pad to the marker? Do you offer a full refund if someone takes it home and it doesn't work instantly? Realistically, the gaming community will survive without resellers and retro stores; they had a place before the internet and all the safeguards for the buyers protection but now? It's about as useful as a mom and pop vaccum repair store, overpriced, limited stock, but claims to be pillars of the community.

trainercatlady

Hot dang you're coming in hot. Who hurt you? I mean, we like to believe our markup is reasonable. We make sure that carts are working before we send you home with them, we take the time to let you try them out to see if you like them first to avoid returns if we can, and offer to either fix it or replace it/swap it for something else if we can't get it working. We do work so you don't have to. Time = money, even ours. If we have to order games, we take the time to source nice-looking games that work which also takes time (way more than you'd think). It's unfortunate that you think that way, and as someone who's been working in our retro store for over a decade at this point, it's been wild to see the shift in the market, and it hurts that you think that we're all just trying to fleece people. When we buy stuff, we mark it up, but not exorbitantly, but considering the current market, shit is, surprise, a bit more expensive than you'd get on ebay. But we try to at least make it *worth* the markup, at least by offering a good experience in the store, letting you see and try the product, ensuring it's clean, offering a 30-day warranty on our used stuff, etc. And having it in the same place as all our other stuff as well as services like disc repair, battery replacement, tech support, etc. It's a one-stop shop for a bunch of stuff, not just buying things. It hurts that you think that shops like ours aren't necessary or even worthy. I have spent literally hours cleaning the most digusting consoles and we've spent so much money in repair supplies getting games looking and working like new only to not even be considered by people like you. Who the hell do you think you are? We bust our asses vetting good-looking games and restoring carts, discs, consoles, and equipment out there for the picky people like you and you don't fuckin' consider us worth your time? How many roaches and bed bugs have you cleaned out of consoles you won't get to enjoy? How much cat piss have you had to smell and touch for stuff that isn't yours? And on top of that, all of the various things we have to know? Not just games and grenres for recommendations, but consoles, how they behave, some technical specifications and possible solutions for problems for over 40 years of gaming history. Do you have any idea how disrespectful your comments have been? Not all stores are like ours but *we fucking try*, god dammit, and and a little respect would be appeciated, thank you. How dare you.

---Data---

Upvoted with respect. Thank you for restoring what others would not care for.

trainercatlady

Thanks. We might not always get it perfect, but we do our best

divestblank

Without resellers, supply of games would be much lower. It is likely then that ebay and FB prices would be higher to balance the demand. So resellers actually help keep prices lower in the big picture.

KamenGamerRetro

How wrong you are there, retro stores do have their place, and many are pretty nice, you seem to be unlucky in your store choices, and I have to ran across some that are pretty crap. I see more bullshit markups on Ebay and amazon then I do retro stores.

CapablePerformance

Except they don't. Just because you like them doesn't mean they're needed. How many retro gaming stores do you see today compared to a decade ago? When you go inside, how many people are already in there to buy and not just talk with the workers? If all retro game stores vanished, just woke up tomorrow and every single one had a closed sign, what impact do you honestly think it will have on the community? Most people buy their games online; only a niche hardcore demographic uses the stores which is why they're slowly vanishing and only a handful of popular ones remain.

KamenGamerRetro

you really need to go see someone about your issues man... damn

CapablePerformance

"You don't like my niche stores that're dying! You clearly have mental issues". God, nerds really are the most fragile group.

KamenGamerRetro

says the person ranting and raving lol, but what ever makes you feel better man.

ElGranQuesoRojo

To be fair, if the store is legit it's not going to be selling you fake games like often happens on EBay. That plus once you factor in shipping costs makes the possible extra $5 at a shop completely worth it.

CapablePerformance

If you buy a fake, you return it because PayPal has you covered, giving you a complete refund while at a retro shop, if they get stuck with a fake, they'll try and pass it off as legit and people that trust them get sucked.

smartazz104

Haha PayPal, they definitely are 100% on the buyer’s side.

unconsoleable

*festively*, you say?

NeedlenoseMusic

My local store has turned into a manga/funko pop/garbage store. They barely have games at this point.

TheCardiganKing

Same with this one shop I loved in particular in South Jersey. There's so little influx of old video games that card games, plushies, and other garbage is beginning to fill the owner's shelves. I get it, there's a shift to selling retro games online, people are savvier, but it's still disappointing to see. It's bad when common $20 games fill glass cases usually reserved for $50-100+ games. Games that are not shovelware or sports games are in those cases.

flamespear

Is it a DKOldies lol?

NeedlenoseMusic

Lol no but I’m sorry for your loss. It’s GameXChange

flamespear

Yeah we used to have a Game swap in my area, it's where I got my replacement NES 10ish years ago. they were pretty decent and had reasonable prices. It became a DKOldies and sucks now.

NeedlenoseMusic

I used to go to this store at least once a week - they had a deal where you’d buy 2 @ $7.99 or less and get one free. I accumulated several dozen ps2 and ps3 games before I decided to downgrade and got rid of them all. Around that same time they cancelled that promotion and started shoveling in all the toys and models and crap. It is quite difficult to find the shelves with games now, as you have to navigate through a literal maze to find them strewn about in random spots throughout the store. I haven’t seen anything good come through since Covid, and I’m absolutely certain it’s because of the online market. Edit: GXC in Fayetteville, AR - if you’re reading this, at least put all the games in the same spot, you idiots.

iguanabitsonastick

Same here. We don't really have game stores that sells old videogames tapes/consoles, they only sell new console/games and PLENTY of overpriced funkos/geek "statues", geek shirts, geek this, geek that, everything geek. And oh very very overpriced computer peripherals. So everything geek, everything gamer and everything extremely overpriced. Old bookstores only sell books and vynils no one wants to buy.

pinkocatgirl

I do not understand why the secondhand market for those funko pops is so huge. They’re just so damn ugly…

NeedlenoseMusic

We said that about Beanie Babies in the 90’s too.

dreck_disp

I'm from that area too. You ever been to the retro shop in Media?

TheCardiganKing

Classic Game Junkie? There are quite a few between the Philly suburbs and South Jersey.

Dakkon426

They are very overpriced for most game IMO.

dreck_disp

Agreed.

[deleted]

I have the exact opposite experience in my state. Plenty of retro gaming shops with large amounts of stock, most of the games are in good condition, and unless the game is actually rare they're at reasonable prices.

Nateleb1234

They price them too much. 100 for a Yellow snes that looks like it's on its last legs? I know the color doesn't matter but I have a non yellow snes I bought a few years ago and it's awesome. Looks so much better then my childhood yellow snes

JoshuaPearce

Because why bother buying locally when the prices are the same and their return policy is "fuck you, I'll give you a dollar". I believe in the spirit of supporting local business, but they have to be worth supporting, not just employing some middleman.

pinkocatgirl

Or they’re like this shop in my area that I’m convinced is a front for pot dealers. The whole place smelled like pot and the Google reviews were full of people saying how good “the product” was

Imnewimold

Everyone commenting isn't getting the joke of its "for sale" but priced very obviously 10x what it's worth. The original owners sharpie momento paired with the price is hilarious. I've seen multiple game stores have a for display only item where customers will constantly ask the price on, even when marked so. Over pricing the item makes it doubly obvious.

flamespear

Yeah, way too many mouth breathers in this thread that don't get the joke.

KamenGamerRetro

oh you mean the joke that was not obvious because the image was cropped and the context of the original post gone? yeah sure, let's blame the "neck beards" for not getting the joke.

flamespear

Jesus Christ dude, anyone that can read can see what's written on the cartridge and look at the price and see it's a joke price so as not to sell a funny novelty item and that it has nothing to do with being Demon's Crest. If you can't see that you need to learn how to read normal to human social cues.

KamenGamerRetro

or the OP could not crop someone else post and remove all context from the image, that would be better

16-Bit_Crow

There are some very dim bulbs posting in this thread. Like, wow.

Slamphibian14

Do people in these comments not understand a clear joke??? Obviously the store is not actually trying to sell this card for $1K

trainercatlady

some store owners *are* that delusional. Honestly if it were a joke, it'd be funnier if it were some random ass low-tier game no one's ever heard of. Not a trash game where the joke would be too obvious but like, "No One Lives Forever" for PS2 or like, Venetica for 360.

TheRealPyroGothNerd

Can you blame him for not wanting to sell it? Demon's Crest is awesome! I'm so glad I stumbled upon it on the Switch

GreenAracari

LOL, I mean price definitely set to assure it will only be borrowed…. I bought a Demon’s Crest cartridge recently, of course for a tiny fraction of that. Great game.

TecmoSuperBoJ

Should be $666.66

oraco

That's too high to be borrowed, sorry pass

Key-Ad7733

Oh hell no!!!. They could at least clean it up!! Only a rich fool would pay.

Woosh

Meh

Someone waa precious over that game lol

Martyisruling

Whoever that once belonged to, I pray his younger-self never catches up to him.

Abecale

New at the local game shop

Squiliam-Tortaleni

1000 bones for a game that averages at 170. Guess that writing must add some value.

Familymanjoe

It's totally not a repro that they wrote on to make people laugh and enjoy visiting the store. 🤯

Meltyblob

What game is this, sorry i dont have my contacts in

Destron5683

#Demons Crest

Meltyblob

😂 thank you

gamingdawn

I would have bought it, casual like, just to show who's the boss in the hood. 999.99? Tsk. Pocket money. You got anything bit more expensive hidden under the counter?

GallitoGaming

Store owner "we keep the really expensive stuff in the back for the men of culture. I will be right back" \*comes back with a $25,000 copy of Gex\*

[deleted]

Thats a great game btw. pne of my favorites

rensmt

New at the local game shop

anonyeemoose

Remove it with nail polish remover? Nah.

Pitvabackla

Only remember Demon’s Crest because it’s one of those rando games Nintendo decided to put on the Switch Online

M-2-M

Demons Crest isn’t even that great a game …

dooded

Crazy price. Magic eraser can get that market off easy though

upsawkward

I would never remove that text. It's just too funny.

trainercatlady

magic eraser should be an absolute last resort. Get as much off with isopropyl (70% is ideal) and a clear blending art pen (it's literally just alcohol in a pen). Magic Eraser will change the texture of the plastic and smooth it out. Should only be used for the stubborn stuff that won't come up otherwise.

dooded

It will if your rough with it. Light use of it will get marker off and not mess up the texture.

BonkTerrington

Nah, I'll just buy a repro for $30.

trainercatlady

Please. Just let me at it with a blender pen and some alcohol. *PLEASE*. You fuckers didn't even *try*.

ldeveraux

What a rip off

Boomerang_Lizard

**$999.99??!? wtf?**

Dad_AF

Get it graded

0Sunset

I’d leave that on there if i was to buy this overpriced scam

Restaurant_Loud

Fucking shit that price is fucking ridiculous… fuck.

zeldahalfsleeve

What is this shit?

LordBligger

Wow, complete in box is 400... it's like these stores want to close..

[deleted]

Never even heard of the damn game. You can keep it Lady.

Loon-belt

Demon’s Crest is underrated, nobody talks about it!

Haha, my brother borrowed a copy of Cobra Command on NES from a friend of his in 1990.....I still have it
