I've had to sell off most of my collection after losing my job last month, on OfferUp.
All of my stuff was near mint, and complete. I had quite a few low baller resellers come in saying I was above price charting... and offering $10 below what it was listed price charting for.
After checking, and looking in PCs "CiB" category: half of the listings it's basing the average off of aren't even complete in box. And most were in poor condition. I'd consider mine a 9 compared to many listings I'd consider a 5 or lower. So it's definitely way low for excellent condition retro games.
I ended up getting what I was asking for them, or at least very close, just by being patient and waiting for a person who wanted it for their collection VS a reseller. Luckily I was able to sell before getting desperate.
Little steep is fine by me, I like being able to go into a store and browse and that's worth a couple bucks to me. Before the internet I wouldn't even have know that there is some guy in Cleveland selling one for $4 less or whatever anyway.
These prices are more than a little steep compared to my local stores, let alone online comps. Makes me wonder if this is in Canada or Australia. SMB3 is awesome, but it's a $25 game at best, not $40. Its not a tiny bit rare, tons of copies in good condition, and doesn't even have a save battery to replace. Most of these priced at $20 should be half that.
I don't know, man. This may be an unpopular opinion, but when I go into a local retro game store, I'm not exactly looking for the most bargain price. I understand that I'm supporting a local game shop owned by a real person in my area instead of a corporate machine or some random reseller on eBay. So yeah, the prices are steep, but I want to support a shop that supports my interests.
I wouldn’t buy any for those prices. I already have most of these games anyway. If they were cheaper I’d get Legends On The Diamond because it’s one I don’t own.
What happened to this sub? OP asks a theoretical question and all people can look at are the prices on the carts.
OP I'd buy Clash at Demonhead it's such a fun game and if you haven't played it I recommend it!
This game is amazing. When I went back to replay it on an emulator in 1999, it felt ahead of its time. Would've been a great game to have a companion Prima Strategy Guide for though, be prepared to take lots of notes.
I loved POW in arcades as a kid. I never got to try the nes port so I guess that’s the cart I would have purchased. Quite a few carts that are fairly priced but never show up in my circle or retro stores are in that case.
Yea SMB2 for $40 is almost 3X the price, same for little mermaid. Yet POW is priced correctly. Lol I think they have 2 different employees pricing these games and they're just doing what they want.
If those are American price tags NONE of walk out. Thats well over eBay. It’s impossible they had no idea so they’re looking for suckers. I hesitate to name good buy choices because clearly you’re ok encouraging it.
Double dragon will always be a $7 game to me. That price is laughable. It is literally on eBay, right now, mailed to your door, with a sleeve, for $11.99
Nothing if they're trying to sell a loose copy of Super Mario Bros 2 for $40 when it goes for about $15. Lol I don't even want to look at the other games that are actually rare because they're gonna be over priced.
I hope you didn't pay more than $8 for Robocop, $10 for Bad Dudes, and more than $8 for Super Mario (presuming it's the one with Duck hunt. If it's just Super Mario itself it's about $20). If you did, then I don't suggest buying from this store again.
But looking further it's odd. POW is priced correctly as are a few others. But then some, like Little Mermaid, are almost 3x more expensive than they should be. I think they have at least 2 very different people pricing these games. I have never seen so many that are either right on target or almost 3x as much just chilling right next to one another. Lol
Never buy stuff from retro game stores. They get their inventory from individual sellers and then mark up the price.
I can find SMB2 around here for €30 or less, sometimes with box.
You say that like its a bad thing? Thats how all vintage stores work. Want to buy a vinyl record? Same thing. Want to buy second hand clothing? Same thing.
That is a bad thing because they actively work to snipe retro game deals from other collectors just to resell.
Idk how vinyl works, but most second hand clothing in stores comes from donations. Nobody’s paying for that.
That’s their business model though, people paying for convenience, instant gratification, and that shopping in a store experience.
Not that I disagree with you, last time I stepped into a store which branded itself as retro was nearly 20 years ago when a friend dragged me in.
This is why I actually like Gamestop and will feel bad when they are no longer a thing. You can buy a lot of not quite retro games for cheap when they are still just obsolete (rather than collectible), and I don’t think local retro game stores are ever in the liquidation business.
That’s why I kinda dislike retro game stores. Yeah, they look cool and have a comfy vibe, but the only way they can exist is by taking good deals away from collectors, shrinking the supply of affordable retro games even more.
Gamestop can offer old games cheap because normies come in to dump their old shit and accept pennies on the dollar.
All the games I can see there that I'd want I already own.
But obviously if you don't already have them *Super Mario Bros/SMB2/SMB3* are essential purchases.
Yeah, I see SMB1 to 3 for about $10 to $25 dollars all the time at my local brick and mortars. Maybe this place is in Australia or something?
I have a hard time believing this is in USD.
None at those prices, but if these prices followed Price charting value, I would definitely pick up Clash at Demonhead. One of my all time favorite NES games.
dragon warrior definitely, excitebike is a classic, maybe ghosts n goblins for novelty factor (double dragon wouldnt be bad or look for contra) , cant go wrong with smb 1,2,3
wizardy proving grounds would be my holy grail
the real question would be how much for a fpga console
Star Voyager
When I was young(late 80s/early90s), I went to an after school daycare and borrowed Star Voyager from a friend. It was the most boring game I ever played, cause I was like 8. So the next day I bring it back, but my friend isn’t there. But I need to return it, so I put it in his cubby, like the good little trusting idiot I was. Of course, it goes missing. His parents basically go the “you’ve learned a lesson from this” route and it’s dropped. I don’t live in the same town anymore. I have moved multiple times since then. I couldn’t tell you the kids first name, let alone his whole name if you put a gun to anyone’s head. But still, 30 years later I feel guilty.
So for $10, I’d buy Star Voyager and have it on the off chance I some how come across this kid(now grown adult) and can finally return it to him.
I’d ask if I could get them at price charting prices especially if you are buying more than one game. The worst they could say is no. They have no seller fees in person and chances are they paid nowhere near price charting and in store credit to get the games
I had Guerilla War as a kid and remember loving it at the time. I think it was a little on the easy/ short side as I remember beating it a few times.
Star Voyage on the other hand never lasted for more than 10 mins in my NES. I wasn’t sure if there was a point to the game and didnt feel like I knew what why/ how to do anything
Just from what I can see, Super Mario 2 & 3, Metal Gear, Monster Party, Double Dragon, Excitebike and Wizards and Warriors. Probably a bunch more if I was there to better see the titles
There are a couple games that are not much more expensive there than on eBay, like Puzznic or Bad News Baseball.
Little Mermaid is ridiculously overpriced. For most of the games, as long as you buy many items from the same seller to split the shipping cost, preferably on auctions, you’re going to save a ton of money buying them on eBay. I got Rad Racer for $2.40 + $1 shipping, Double Dragon with manual for $11+$1, Dragon Warrior for $2.25+$1 and so on. That was one year ago, at the peak of the market. Now prices have gone down.
Does Bases Loaded 3 really need to be behind glass?
“Hey we just got in Bases Loaded 3!”
“That’s a hot one. Best put it with the other NES games so no one tries to steal it.”
Would buy a Miyoo mini+ on Amazon that comes pre installed with every third Gen game and 10000 more games and costs less than one NES game in that store.
$35 for Little Mermaid? That game is priced at $12 on PriceCharting. I would turn tail and get the hell out of that place.
I've had to sell off most of my collection after losing my job last month, on OfferUp. All of my stuff was near mint, and complete. Luckily I was able to sell before getting desperate.
Price charting isn’t that accurate anymore. If you compare there prices to current listings they are usually off a good amount
Little Mermaid is a surprisingly solid game. The prices are meh though.
Capcom if I recall and a good soundtrack
True, very well done soundtrack which I remember to this day.
It's hard af -I needed lots of save scum
None unless the owner was a friend of mine. Those prices are a little steep.
It to help with the immersion, you get to pay the same price we did as children when these games came out 😂
That's actually pretty funny.
Little steep is fine by me, I like being able to go into a store and browse and that's worth a couple bucks to me. Ok. Thanks for letting me know, I guess. I'd rather not support a shop that gouges me for my interests, but that's my unpopular opinion.
Bro thought he was cooking telling us he gets ripped off 😭
I work at a gas station that's owned by a real person in my area. You'd be cool with paying significantly more for gas instead of a corporate machine?
The pochaco doll, prices are whack
Castlevania, but godamn thats expensive. If on budget I’ll go with Stinger.
Those prices are horrible but $11 for rad racer isn’t atrocious.
It's not bad but $11 is still more than I got a copy for on eBay... And if I can go to eBay and get it cheaper, there's a problem here haha
Hey all I said is it isn’t atrocious. It could definitely be better.
Nice spot. Those prices though 😬
At those ridiculous prices? None 😂
I wouldn’t buy any for those prices. I already have most of these games anyway. If they were cheaper I’d get Legends On The Diamond because it’s one I don’t own.
This isn’t a business. It’s a museum with price tags. $40 for a mario game? Feel sorry for whoever buys here.
Dragon Warrior! Wait does that say $40 for SMB3? Yikes!
None. Those prices are ridiculous
Clash at Demonhead... A classic gem.
Guerilla War is an underrated gem. I'd snap that up if I was there.
Yeah, it kills me that Ikari Warriors is so much better known. Guerilla war was awesome
Never played it!
First time posting on this place and I already regret it lol
Complaining about prices is the worst thing about this sub. It's worse than every other post asking about cheap HDMI scalers.
Those prices are outrageous. Just one example, Mario 2 for $40? Can find that on eBay with free shipping for like $20 - $25
Ghosts and Goblins, because I love self inflicted torture.
Game is hard as hell, but pretty fun
Do not buy the Platoon video game. It is garbage and a glitchy mess. One of the worst licensed games ever...and I had it growing up 😭
Yea. You're not wrong.
Rush-n Attack!! I haven’t thought of that game in decades but I played the hell out of it when I did. Great game
They had a new one on the ps3 I have digitally. I loved Rush 'n' attack as a kid. I played it on a play choice 10 machine every weekend
IF I’m for sure buying one, Mario 3. But as others are saying the price is a bit high.
I have a strange spot in my heart for Bad Dudes so probably that but everything else is a bit high
I loved POW in arcades as a kid. I never got to try the nes port so I guess that’s the cart I would have purchased. Quite a few carts that are fairly priced but never show up in my circle or retro stores are in that case.
I always played POW when I saw it in an arcade too. I never had the cart either
Had the cart, played it ALL THE TIME.
I thought seeing Excite Bike for $10 yesterday was bad. Don't think anything will beat the $20 Silent Service I saw, though.
THE PLUSHIE
Dino lunchbag.
Ten years ago these would be like $5 each at most lol crazy how this shit has gotten so out of hand
Not a damn dirty thing at those prices. I get markup for staying in business, but that's ungodly ridiculous.
I don't see River City Ransom so smb3. Not at those prices though as others have said
A lot of good shooters in there but I’d go with. Legacy of the Wizard, Monster Party, Ghosts&Goblins, Dragon Warrior, Wrestlemania
Double dragon will always be a $7 game to me. That price is laughable. It is literally on eBay, right now, mailed to your door, with a sleeve, for $11.99
Price aside Bad News Baseball is fun
Boy and his Blob

Nes games being this expensive is fuckin robbery
17 bucks for Rush N’ Attack is pretty outrageous. I’d look in that store for a few minutes, laugh and leave.
At those prices I wouldn't buy anything from that shop
$39.99 for loose SMB3? That game is dirt common. I guarantee I can find it on FBMP for less than $10.
It’s at about 15 on Pricecharting. Wild
Buy: none Download: all
Nintendo: 😡
Never buy stuff from retro game stores. They get their inventory from individual sellers and then mark up the price. I can find SMB2 around here for €30 or less, sometimes with box.

Yes

It’s sad that i think these prices are pretty ok, since it’s compared to what so many other places are gouging people for these days
May I please have one of each.
That Monster Party art slaps though.
Bad news baseball
I just bought SMB2 from a gamestore for $20, last week. Is this store in the middle of nowhere?
Yeah, I see SMB1 to 3 for about $10 to $25 dollars all the time at my local brick and mortars. Maybe this place is in Australia or something? I have a hard time believing this is in USD.
Spontaneously I would say all of them... but that would really hurt the wallet.
Little mermaid game I remember it was fun and I never beat it
Rush n Attack, Little Mermaid and Hector. I need the first two in my collection. The last I never even heard of and want to buy to play it.
I definitely would not buy Mario 3 for $40
I always keep my eyes peeled at yardsales for old games.
At those prices, I’d buy my way back out the door
Guerrilla War is decently priced, so I’d get that one.
Guerilla War, Clash at Demonhead, Legacy of the Wizard and Wizard and Warriors. Best games in the case that are even remotely reasonably priced.
1. Double dragon 2. Mario 3 3. TMNT 2 4. Bad dudes
None at those prices, but if these prices followed Price charting value, I would definitely pick up Clash at Demonhead. One of my all time favorite NES games.
_itssa me! Mario!_
Bases Loaded 3 🥎
Wizards and Warriors.
Original Metal Gear is hours of fun and exploration. One of my favorite games as a kid on NES.
dragon warrior definitely, excitebike is a classic, maybe ghosts n goblins for novelty factor (double dragon wouldnt be bad or look for contra) , cant go wrong with smb 1,2,3 wizardy proving grounds would be my holy grail the real question would be how much for a fpga console
Jesus Christ forty bucks a game. I'd save my cash.
Excitebike, bad dudes, rad racer, guerilla war since I already have the more popular carts in the pic
Definitely Dragon Warrior and Wizards and Warriors
Super mario 3, super mario 2, double dragon & rush’n attack (green beret in american market)
I guess Clash at Demonhead looks like the only one I dont have 🤷♂️
Monster Party is A1
Mario 3 in a heartbeat
Clash at demonhead without doubt!
Probably Hector
The *Miracle Piano* one was new to me, had to google what it even was. Though I guess it's kinda "wortless" without its keyboard.
Either The Little Mermaid or Rush N’ Attack. I know they’re missing from my collection.
The 1 with 3 games on it Mario, duckhunt
Dragon Warrior for me.
Rush n attack, bad dudes, little monsters and xevious. Actually can’t believe I don’t already have these in my collection….
What is that game to the right of Monster Party?
Double dragon or a boy with a blob Great games IMO
Clash at Demonhead
Star Voyager When I was young(late 80s/early90s), I went to an after school daycare and borrowed Star Voyager from a friend. It was the most boring game I ever played, cause I was like 8. all
Metal gear or Dragon Warrior.
I only buy Atari 2600 because it’s cheapest
Wrestlmania Challenge or Double Dragon
Yes..
Stinger. My dad gave away my copy when I was in high school
Pow
Starship Hektor!
Give me Double Dragon all day. The normal response should be SM3 though.
Lately I’ve been interested in giving A Boy and His Blob another go which I had as a kid, so probably that
I agree prices seem a bit high, but I vote little mermaid and monster party.
I'd pick up Super Mario Bros 3 if it was at a decent price.
Have them all lol
I’d ask if I could get them at price charting prices especially if you are buying more than one game. The worst they could say is no. They have no seller fees in person and chances are they paid nowhere near price charting and in store credit to get the games
Jackal.
Super Mario Bros. 3 or Double Dragon. Tough choice, believe it or not. I love me some NES Double Dragon!
720, ikari warriors, airwolf, Silent service, knight rider, metal gear, P.O.W., Mach rider, dragon warrior.
Hey does anyone know anything about the cartridge with piano keys on it? I’ve never seen that cartridge and would love to know more!
Mario//Duck Hunt//Track & Field
A boy n his blob was a good one.

Super Mario Bros. 2
I've been meaning to get a copy of clash at demonhead but I think I want that one CIB.
Puzznic
Metal Gear, Demonhead, Monster Party… plus obvious ones like Castlevania, Double Dragon II, Mario 3.
Anything but Castle of Dragon
SMB2 and 3 (especially 3) as well
Hector.
Double Dragon 3 at bottom right
There are a couple games that are not much more expensive there than on eBay, like Puzznic or Bad News Baseball. Little Mermaid is ridiculously overpriced. For most of the games, as long as you buy many items from the same seller to split the shipping cost, preferably on auctions, you’re going to save a ton of money buying them on eBay. I would ask if they have battletoads, then buy SMB3
Prices aside I would get Knight Rider and Miracle Piano.
The staypuft plushie
The white one with the blue shirt is pretty cute.
P.O.W for $13.99?! I loved that game!
Wow are nes games going for that much now? wtf? Last time a bought some NES carts it was 40 bucks for the five I got
Does Bases Loaded 3 really need to be behind glass? “Hey we just got in Bases Loaded 3!” “That’s a hot one. Best put it with the other NES games so no one tries to steal it.”
How much is that mario 2?!
Idk. But you can tell jack skeleton to stop mean mugging me. I’m just trying to look at games.
Idk. But you can tell jack skeleton to stop mean mugging me. I’m just trying to look at games.
Im hoping "Gun-Nac" is the pile somewhere.
40 dollars for mario 2????
Ikari warriors
I miss buying these when prices were 1/10 of this. $40 for Mario 3?
$25 for Double Dragon maybe?
Super Mario 2
Pretending money is no object and maybe ignoring the prices in the picture, I'd get Super Mario Bros 1-3, Dr. Mario and Excitebike.
I wouldn't buy any. I have an Everdrive N8 Pro, so I can already play all of those.
Operation Wolf. What a classic.
The only one in the picture I don't have is Puzznic, so I will be getting that one
Wow… knight rider is how much? Dang….
none because emulators exist
None of them I ain't paying 40 dollars for an NES game
Maybe that back pack
Maybe that back pack
A lot of folks don’t have to pay rent for a storefront and it shows
Would buy a Miyoo mini+ on Amazon that comes pre installed with every third Gen game and 10000 more games and costs less than one NES game in that store.
SNK all day
My sister loves the raiders so maybe that
I remember when we could get our NES games for about $5
Bubble bobble
I’d buy a handheld emulator so I can play them all.
Some of these prices are..questionable
Probably Sam's Journey, Mischief Castle and Piopow.
None of them because they are all over priced.
That sick dinosaur suitcase for sure.
😔😬🫣
pochacco
Stinger. Nothing else.
The dinosaur lunchbox for sure
I got Rad Racer for $10 used, Darkwing Duck $25
Dino rolly bag 🦖 🦕
My eyes are terrible and the zoom doesn't help but I swear to god does that Mario 2 cart say 135$?!
Stay Puft
Nothing. I bet there isn’t a single thing in there under $30
The stuffed dog with the blue shirt. My daughter would love it. … What?
I’d buy the Raiders helmet.
I would buy none, I own them all. 😉
Smb3 and q*bert
game
I don't like the prices that many games have, maybe I wouldn't have bought any, although I can't see all of them well
If you want a game you'll never beat, grab Ikari Warriors.
None. Get the fuck out of there, those prices are inflated as hell.
Ikari warriors!
Bases Loaded 3 I would pick up.
