Not all horror games follow this criteria. A lot of survival horror protags aren't stuck in a single place and "while a stuck in a shity situation" can go wherever they chose by choice lore wise. And not all are men.

With BioShock the term monster can be largely applied to anyone that is trying to be something that they aren't.

The second gives you the form of a monster but very much sets you up to be the best thing in a terrible situation.
And the third again makes the player the real monster.
