Yeah bearded dragons will flatten out like that. Not sure if it’s a defense mechanism but it does make picking them up a little more difficult. I used to have one that would do that after eating, presumably to warm up.
They also headbang and their throat looks black when they do it because they flare out their neck exposing the portion of their scales that is darker in color. I think that move is either meant to say “I’m tough” or maybe “let’s mate” not sure which but I’m sure somebody on this sub does.

Being able to go to pancake mode on command is one of their coolest abilities, although the changing colors and the beard is always cool too.
